Upper part of the Pyran Cascade

Published by White and Co, London 1810 - A picturesque view of the Pyran falls near Hafod House from "Tour to Hafod," a fine collection of plates depicting the mansion and its surrounding landscape engraved by Stadler after drawings by Smith. In his text, J. E. Smith describes Pyran as "one of the most favourite water-falls" and explains how it "terminates an umbrageous glen in the most advantageous manner, opening upon the spectator by degrees, till the whole is seen in perfection" (p. 13). Comprised of 15 views, Tour to Hafod also included comprehensive descriptive text by the scientist and collector James Edward Smith. The work was most likely intended as a tribute to the social benefactor and literary man Thomas Johnes (1748-1816), who devoted much of his life to his home region of Cardiganshire, where he served as a lord-lieutenant, a colonel in the militia, and an MP for the borough of Cardigan. Located in Cardiganshire, Western Wales, Hafodychtryd or Hafod for short, was Johnes's country estate. Hafod House, his principal residence, was erected in 1785 in the "gothic" style of Thomas Baldwin of Bath. Upon settling there, Johnes set about ameliorating the conditions of the local poor by providing them with comfortable housing and employing them in a planting project that would beautify the neighboring areas. In addition to his concern for social welfare, he was extremely interested in improving parts of Cardiganshire and actively involved himself in the building of roads and bridges. Born in Irthington in 1749, John "Warwick" Smith was an accomplished topographical draughtsman and watercolourist, who enjoyed the generous patronage of the Earl of Warwick. In addition to his fine engravings of Italy, he contributed numerous illustrations to topographical publications such as Select Views in Great Britain (1812), Views of the Lakes of Cumberland (1791-5), Tour through Wales (1794), and A Tour to Hafod (1810). In 1805, Smith became a member of the Watercolour Society, where he frequently exhibited his works. Cf. Abbey, Scenery of Great Britain and Ireland, 533; cf. Dictionary of National Biography. Hand-coloured aquatint engraving. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling and a few minor water stains in the left margin and top right corner of the sheet, the latter of which slightly extends into the top right corner of the image.

Éloge Historique de L'imprimerie. Seconde Édtion

1810. Paris, Porthmann, imprimeur ordre. des A.A.I. et R. Madame, 1810. 2ff, 59pp. A nice uncut copy in orginal grey-blue wrappers. Second edition of this work that was printed for the first time in the same year under the title 'Essai historique sur l'Imprimerie'. The author, Jules Louis Melchior Porthmann was the son of a printer, and was born in Paris in 1790 and died in 1820. He was not even 20 years old when he took over his father's printing house and in the same year published the present work. "The book is eloquently written, in the most eulogistic strain, but does not contain any historical or technical matter. There are however many laudatory references to early Parisian printers." (Bigmore & Wyman about this second edition). The first edition contained 15 pages of notes at the end that have been omitted in the second edition and the title is changed into: 'Eloge Historique sur l'Imprimerie', probably because some of the reviews that were written on publication think more of it as an 'Eloge' as as an 'Essai'. Two of the reviews are reprinted in part in the third (enlarged) edition.

Less than three weeks before he left for New York City to deliver his pivotal Cooper Union speech, Lincoln writes a check to a local stove dealer

Partly-printed Document Signed, "A. Lincoln," a check, 7" x 2.25", filled out in his hand to "Elie Kreigh" for $3.70, drawn on the Springfield Marine & Fire Insurance Company. Slit cancellation barely affects "c" in signature, two small punch cancellations, a few minor contemporary ink smudges, extremely light soiling, light vertical crease, else fine condition. Elie Kreigh (1810-1885) was born in Maryland, and in his early years sold hats in Hagerstown, Maryland (Torch-Light, Hagerstown, Maryland, June 6, 1833, p. 4). In 1855, he moved his family to Springfield, where he established himself as a dealer in tin ware and stoves in a store about a block away from the state capitol building, and about five blocks from Lincoln's home (Polk's Springfield Directory, 1857). In June of 1860, the Lincolns purchased a stove from Kreigh, and popular tradition holds that Mary was so enthralled with it that she wanted to bring it to Washington the next year

A Treatise upon the Art of Flying, by Mechanical Means,

      - TRUE FIRST EDITION. PHOTOGRAPHS AVAILABLE ON REQUEST. Title continues: "with a Full Explanation of the Natural Principles by which Birds are Enabled to Fly; likewise Instructions and Plans for making a Flying Car with wings, in which a man May Sit, and, by Working a Small Lever, Cause Himself to Ascend and Soar through the Air with the Facility of a Bird," very rare First Edition, x, 6-67pp 8vo, with a large hand coloured folding plate, contemporary half calf, rebacked, plate and final leaf with some professional restoration, inscribed presentation copy from the author, despite restoration a good example of a fascinating book, ONE OF THE RAREST ENGLISH BOOKS ON AVIATION Hull, Simmons for Longman &c., 1810. Maggs, The History of Flight, catalogue 619 for 1936, # 178: 'First edition of one of the rarest English books on Aviation' where it was priced at œ25 - perhaps one hundredth of its value today. 'Walker's ideas on the practicability of flight as a means of aerial transportation were based (as stated on the title-page of his treatise) upon 'the natural principles by which birds are enabled to fly.' It is evident the flight of birds was a subject on which for many years he diligently read and observed - in his early life he dissected many birds and 'studied very minutely' the mechanism of their wings, tails and all the parts which they employ in flying. On the evidence of his reading which the author himself states would have enabled him to compile a large volume from all that had been said on the subject throughout the ages he avers 'that no one has ever understood the natural means of flying'' and he dismisses as 'childish whims' all attempts hitherto made with wings, whether of silk, leather, sheet iron, or other rnaterials. Throughout the book he insists on the fact that granted the possession of the 'two greatest requisites ' for flying, viz, 'wings large enough' and 'sufficient power to work them' the weight of a bird - or of a man - is no obstacle to the art of flying. In respect of his own scheme for 'artificial flying' which, conceived on an analogous plan, was designed to overcome the difficulty of the insufficient strength of man's arms, and (as hitherto attempted) the unsupported weight of his body - he claimed, with that complete assurance which is rarely convincing, 'there cannot remain a doubt of success.' Walker admits that 'professional avocations and other circumstances' - which it is safe to assume includes lack of money - prevented him from making any such machine as he described on paper, and indeed the only experiment he himself records was confined to diminutive paper models. It should, however, be added that a contemporary -who as a resident of Barton-on-Humber doubtless wrote with some personal knowledge - stated that Walker made a machine, but 'was unable to raise himself from the platform on which the car was placed.' (See Hodgson's History, pp.351-3). Photograph available on request.

A Description of the Collection of Ancient Terracottas in the British Museum; with engravings.

London: Printed by W. Bulmer.and sold at the British Museum; and by G. and W. Nicol. 1810 - FIRST EDITION. 4to, 345 x 275 mms., a large-paper copy, pp. vii [viii explanation of title-page vignette], 39 [40 blank], 40 full-page engraved (several by George Cooke and James Neagle) plates (two folding) after drawings by William Alexander, very attractively bound in contemporary full straight-grain red morocco, bordered in gilt and blind on covers, gilt spine, all edges gilt. A fine copy with an equally good provenance, with the armorial bookplate of, probably, John Russell, sixth Duke of Bedford (1766 - 1839) on the front paste-down end-paper. A common book, to be sure, but a rather well-bound copy with a good provenance. The numismatist and archaeologist, Taylor Combe (1774 - 1826), worked in the British Museum from 1803 until his death and was responsible for some of the most useful and finely-printed works on his specialist subjects. Lowndes, in A Bibliographer's Manual of English Literature, notes that "Twelve copies [were] printed in folio for presents to Royal Personages only," without making clear the measurements of the so-called folio. This copy is certainly printed in 4s, but it is larger than any copy traced on Copac or WorldCat. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

415 x 655 mm.

Un Bon Tiens Vaut Mieux Que Deux tu Auras [A Bird in Hand is Worth Two in the Bush]

Paris 1810 - A glowing impression of this charming stipple engraving, which is printed in the "a la poupée" method. This unusual print by Augrand after Mallet exemplifies a certain vogue for quasi erotic, decorative prints that swept through France during the Napoleonic era. Mallet had a reputation for luxurious mixes of beautiful women and cupids. Here in a scene that echoes Medieval and Renaissance Annunciation scenes, a happy young woman in the neo-Classical garb that became fashionable at this time embraces one cherub while another floats away, and the title invites her to be happy with the one she has. This plate is a lovely example of early colour printing, which was developed as a means of reproducing the effects of painting in oils. It exemplifies the single-plate colour-printing technique developed in England and quickly adopted by French engravers. The effect is achieved by inking a single plate with several different colours by using a rag stump, a process known as à la poupée . As this lovely print demonstrates, the outcome achieved by this laborious method of inking has a wonderful painterly effect and creates a delicacy of image, appropriate to its light-hearted message. Colour-printed stipple. Printed on wove paper. In excellent condition with the exception of some slight paper discolouration. Water stain lower left corner. Trimmed within plate mark on the side and top margins. Image size: 10 3/8 x 13 1/8 inches.

Printed for T. Payne, London 1810 - Early 19th Century Libretti Based on Greek Tragedies,The Artful Painted Scene by the Dover Painter, ca. 1930. 194 x 124 mm (7 5/8 x 4 7/8"). 2 p.l., lxxxvii, [i], 188 pp. FIRST EDITION. Harmless contemporary purple straight-grain morocco, covers with gilt fillet border, raised bands flanked by plain gilt rules, gilt titling, all edges gilt. WITH AN EXCELLENT LATER FORE-EDGE PAINTING OF THE ACROPOLIS. Joints somewhat rubbed and flaked, boards a little stained and rather faded, rear board with two small abraded patches, otherwise an excellent copy, clean and fresh internally, in a solid, inoffensive binding, and with a vividly colored painting in fine condition. These two librettos are based on Euripides' tragedies "Medea" and "Alcestis." "Cornelia" transports the story of Medea's revenge on her faithless husband to Roman Britain, while Alcestis' story of self-sacrifice and redemption retains its original setting and cast of characters. The fore-edge painting salutes the classical origins of the operas with a striking depiction of the Acropolis, rising majestically on its hill, surrounded by open countryside with blue mountains in the distance. The foreground is populated by two tourists, sitting on a rock admiring the view, and four brightly dressed Greek peasants. Our view shows a sophisticated sense of design as well as a delicacy of painterly strokes, and the whole scene looks very convincing. The intricate gradations in the shading, seen especially in the fields and sky, are remarkable, and the highly skilled use of shadows establishes a strong sense of three-dimensionality. There is a great deal to see in terms of activity, landscape, and architecture, and all of it is painted in careful, convincing detail. It is easy to recognize the work of the so-called "Dover Painter," as it shows his distinctive style of applying small dabs of paint; this method is especially effective in producing convincing texture for skies, trees, shrubs, and grass. "Dover Painter" is the name given by Jeff Weber to the person who painted in the 1920s and '30s, probably for the famous London bookseller Marks & Company. British writer James Mason (1778/9-1827) wrote political pamphlets advocating parliamentary reform and Catholic emancipation, as well as several plays, an epistolary novel, and translations from the classics. Marie Louise Archid. d' Autriche

A Paris chez Bance ame M. d'Estampes rue St. Denis and a' Milan chez Joseph M. et Frere Ubiemi M. d' Estampes rue des Servi n. 506 Editeurs, 1810. A captivating portrait of Marie Louise of Austria, Napoleon's second wife. This is a magnificent print of Marie Louise of Austria executed in 1810, the year of her marriage to Emperor Napoleon. In 1809 when Josephine, Napoleon's first wife, failed to give him a son, the Emperor divorced her. He based this action on the spurious grounds that a parish priest had not been present at their marriage, but it was well known that this decision resulted from his desire for a male heir. Two months later he married Marie Louise, the daughter of Francis II, Emperor of Austria, and great-niece of Marie Antoinette. The marriage did nothing to end the enmity between France and Austria, but in 1811 Marie gave birth to a son, Francois Charles, who was made king of Rome. This captivating print depicts Marie at one of the most pivotal moments of her life. She is portrayed as being both innocent and magisterial, fashionable as well as reserved which results in a hauntingly beautiful portrait of this young bride. Rados's print recalls the portrait of Marie, executed in the same year, by Jean Godfrey. Both works are monumental in size and depict the young princess in a park setting. The detailing of Marie's dress and the level of intricate detail in Rados's image, is nothing short of magnificent, and his soft engraving technique gives this print a delicacy, which is immensely appealing. From the collection of William J. Latta of Philadelphia, a 19th century collector of Napoleonic material. Regency to Empire: French Printmaking 1715-1814 no. 124; Le Blanc, Manuel de L'Amateur D'Estampes III, p. 269, no. 12; Lugt, Les Marques de Collections , No. 2825. Stipple with engraving. Ueber die Verkrümmungen des menschlichen Körpers und eine rationelle und sichere Heilart derselben.

Leipzig: Mitzky und Compagnie, 1810. - xiv, 170 pp; 6 plates. Recent marbled boards. Upper blank corner of title page renewed. Foxed (text is quite foxed; plates are only slightly foxed). Almost entirely unopened. Untrimmed. First Edition. Plate I illustrates deformities of the spine, hand, leg, and foot. Plates II-VI illustrate deformities and Jörg's mechanical apparatus to treat them. "The first medical orthopaedist in Germany, Johann Christian Gottfried Jörg (1779-1865) worked here [Leipzig], and in 1810--18 years before the publication of Delpech's De l'orthomorphie--wrote what is regarded as the first scientific textbook of orthopaedics in the world: Über die Verkrummungen des menschlichen Körpers und eine rationelle und sichere Heilart derselben (On the distortions of the human body and a rational and certain method of curing the same). And yet Jörg, like Deventer in Holland, was an obstetrician, a professor of obstetrics, and to some extent a paediatrician. He wrote an excellent account of the morbid anatomy and treatment of club-foot [Über Klumpfüsse und eine leichte und zweckmässige Heilart derselben, 1806], incriminating the tibial muscles, especially the posterior, as the cause of inveterate adduction. He advocated the mechanical management of deformities with appliances and corsets. He says nothing of the operative treatment of torticollis, except that it might have been suitable for a cruder age, but that every case could be cured by his own ingenious device in which a head-band was connected to a breastplate by a ratchet [illustrated in his plate 2]. Jörg succeeded in distinguishing between the curvatures of scoliosis and spinal tuberculosis, but was uncertain about the cause of the gibbus in the latter; the proximate cause lay mostly in the bones, less often in the muscles, and rickets, foul air and malnutrition played a part. He laboured to get victims of infantile paralysis on their feet again. He encouraged the chiropodists. He seems to have had an intuition about the cause of rickets, preferring to admit patients to his own home for supervision, so that it virtually became an orthopaedic clinic, since, left to their parents, 'their diet is seldom adhered to as is necessary if rickets is to be avoided thereby.' He made a poignant appeal which indicates how critical for the advance of orthopaedics was a change in medical attitudes at the start of the 19th century: 'I must risk an entreaty, which is that in future the better heads among the doctors should not let themselves be so intimidated by the diseases discussed here . . . and rescue these afflictions from the executioners, pastors and the like; for, sad to say not only the common man but also often the educated turn to these people because they were occasionally lucky here and there, and because the patients with these disorders were often rejected outright by the better doctors.' This was why the surgeons in Würzburg were so tolerant of Heine and why lay therapists were so successful in practice, if not in results, until far into the century. Orthopaedics was not a field in which a doctor could count on being seen to be successful or show a rapid benefit, rather the reverse; better leave it to the bandagist, splint-maker, masseur, even the charlatan. Yet there came a point when the financial rewards of the latter excited medical hostility" (Le Vay, History of Orthopaedics, pp; 194-96). OCLC locates copies of the first edition in these US libraries: Chicago, NLM, College Physicians Phila. There was a reprinting in 1816, a copy of which is at Harvard. [Attributes: First Edition]
