[New York]. 1810.. Broadside, 16 1/2 x 8 inches. Printed in three columns. Contemporary manuscript docketing on verso. Remnants of wax seal in upper margin. Early horizontal folds. Light bleed-through of ink and soiling on verso to recto. Small hole near title, with no loss to text. Overall very good. Matted. Broadside printing of James Madison's 1810 State of the Union address, with substantial discussion of the reopening of American commerce to France and Great Britain and the subsequent diplomatic strains with both of those nations. Madison also addresses issues relating to problems with the Spanish in West Florida, peace with the Barbary States, Indian relations, military fortification, and Americans engaging in illegal slave trafficking, and he proposes the establishment of a national university and a new national military academy. Preceding the text of the address is printed a note from the MERCANTILE ADVERTISER's enervated Washington correspondent: "I write in great haste - The Express has just arrived, with the message delivered this morning at 12 o'clock. I am sorry, extremely sorry to say, one express on this route was left by this one considerably hurt in a fall from his horse, and one horse has been killed through excessive fatigue & the horrid roads." Unrecorded, with no separate copies of this extra located on OCLC. Very rare.

        Självporträtt i blå barett.

»Själfporträtt af Professor Sandberg» skrivet a tergo. 28 × 24 cm. Senare hos Sonja Hylén (1914-2008).Utställd: Konstnärshuset, Stockholm, Gustaf Fredriksons tavelsamling, januari 1926, kat. nr 87.Litteratur: Mauritz Beijerstein, Johan Gustaf Sandberg 1782-1854 (1928), kat. nr 118 (s. 192). Nationalmuseum äger detsamma i freskoteknik» (s. 4). Hafod House

Published by White and Co, London 1810 - A picturesque view of Hafod House from "Tour to Hafod", a fine collection of plates depicting the mansion and its surrounding landscape engraved by Stadler after drawings by Smith. Comprised of 15 views, Tour to Hafod also included comprehensive descriptive text by the scientist and collector James Edward Smith. The work was most likely intended as a tribute to the social benefactor and literary man Thomas Johnes (1748-1816), who devoted much of his life to his home region of Cardiganshire, where he served as a lord-lieutenant, a colonel in the militia, and an MP for the borough of Cardigan. Located in Cardiganshire, Western Wales, Hafodychtryd or Hafod for short, was Johnes's country estate. Hafod House, his principal residence, was erected in 1785 in the "gothic" style of Thomas Baldwin of Bath. Smith describes it as being "situated on a rising ground, in a rich and beautiful valley, watered by the river Ystwith, and encompassed with bold hills, richly wooded, or a great variety of forms. These woods abound with magnificent water-falls, formed chiefly by three mountain streams that empty themselves into the Ystwith in different parts of the valley, and are never dry." Upon settling there, Johnes set about ameliorating the conditions of the local poor by providing them with comfortable housing and employing them in a planting project that would beautify the neighboring areas. In addition to his concern for social welfare, he was extremely interested in improving parts of Cardiganshire and actively involved himself in the building of roads and bridges. Born in Irthington in 1749, John "Warwick" Smith was an accomplished topographical draughtsman and watercolourist, who enjoyed the generous patronage of the Earl of Warwick. In addition to his fine engravings of Italy, he contributed numerous illustrations to topographical publications such as Select Views in Great Britain (1812), Views of the Lakes of Cumberland (1791-5), Tour through Wales (1794), and A Tour to Hafod (1810). In 1805, Smith became a member of the Watercolour Society, where he frequently exhibited his works. Cf. Abbey, Scenery of Great Britain and Ireland 533; cf. Dictionary of National Biography. Hand-coloured aquatint engraving. Good condition apart from some overall light soiling, a few mild surface abrasions in the margins, and several small tears and minor losses at the edges of the sheet. Light water stain in the lower left corner.

Upper part of the Pyran Cascade

Published by White and Co, London 1810 - A picturesque view of the Pyran falls near Hafod House from "Tour to Hafod," a fine collection of plates depicting the mansion and its surrounding landscape engraved by Stadler after drawings by Smith. In his text, J. E. Smith describes Pyran as "one of the most favourite water-falls" and explains how it "terminates an umbrageous glen in the most advantageous manner, opening upon the spectator by degrees, till the whole is seen in perfection" (p. 13). Éloge Historique de L'imprimerie. Seconde Édtion

1810. Paris, Porthmann, imprimeur ordre. des A.A.I. et R. Madame, 1810. 2ff, 59pp. A nice uncut copy in orginal grey-blue wrappers. Second edition of this work that was printed for the first time in the same year under the title 'Essai historique sur l'Imprimerie'. The author, Jules Louis Melchior Porthmann was the son of a printer, and was born in Paris in 1790 and died in 1820. He was not even 20 years old when he took over his father's printing house and in the same year published the present work. "The book is eloquently written, in the most eulogistic strain, but does not contain any historical or technical matter. There are however many laudatory references to early Parisian printers." (Bigmore & Wyman about this second edition). The first edition contained 15 pages of notes at the end that have been omitted in the second edition and the title is changed into: 'Eloge Historique sur l'Imprimerie', probably because some of the reviews that were written on publication think more of it as an 'Eloge' as as an 'Essai'. Two of the reviews are reprinted in part in the third (enlarged) edition.

Less than three weeks before he left for New York City to deliver his pivotal Cooper Union speech, Lincoln writes a check to a local stove dealer

Partly-printed Document Signed, "A. Lincoln," a check, 7" x 2.25", filled out in his hand to "Elie Kreigh" for $3.70, drawn on the Springfield Marine & Fire Insurance Company. Slit cancellation barely affects "c" in signature, two small punch cancellations, a few minor contemporary ink smudges, extremely light soiling, light vertical crease, else fine condition. Elie Kreigh (1810-1885) was born in Maryland, and in his early years sold hats in Hagerstown, Maryland (Torch-Light, Hagerstown, Maryland, June 6, 1833, p. 4). In 1855, he moved his family to Springfield, where he established himself as a dealer in tin ware and stoves in a store about a block away from the state capitol building, and about five blocks from Lincoln's home (Polk's Springfield Directory, 1857). A Treatise upon the Art of Flying, by Mechanical Means,

      - TRUE FIRST EDITION. PHOTOGRAPHS AVAILABLE ON REQUEST. Title continues: "with a Full Explanation of the Natural Principles by which Birds are Enabled to Fly; likewise Instructions and Plans for making a Flying Car with wings, in which a man May Sit, and, by Working a Small Lever, Cause Himself to Ascend and Soar through the Air with the Facility of a Bird," very rare First Edition, x, 6-67pp 8vo, with a large hand coloured folding plate, contemporary half calf, rebacked, plate and final leaf with some professional restoration, inscribed presentation copy from the author, despite restoration a good example of a fascinating book, ONE OF THE RAREST ENGLISH BOOKS ON AVIATION Hull, Simmons for Longman &c., 1810. Maggs, The History of Flight, catalogue 619 for 1936, # 178: 'First edition of one of the rarest English books on Aviation' where it was priced at œ25 - perhaps one hundredth of its value today. 'Walker's ideas on the practicability of flight as a means of aerial transportation were based (as stated on the title-page of his treatise) upon 'the natural principles by which birds are enabled to fly.' It is evident the flight of birds was a subject on which for many years he diligently read and observed - in his early life he dissected many birds and 'studied very minutely' the mechanism of their wings, tails and all the parts which they employ in flying. On the evidence of his reading which the author himself states would have enabled him to compile a large volume from all that had been said on the subject throughout the ages he avers 'that no one has ever understood the natural means of flying'' and he dismisses as 'childish whims' all attempts hitherto made with wings, whether of silk, leather, sheet iron, or other rnaterials. Throughout the book he insists on the fact that granted the possession of the 'two greatest requisites ' for flying, viz, 'wings large enough' and 'sufficient power to work them' the weight of a bird - or of a man - is no obstacle to the art of flying. In respect of his own scheme for 'artificial flying' which, conceived on an analogous plan, was designed to overcome the difficulty of the insufficient strength of man's arms, and (as hitherto attempted) the unsupported weight of his body - he claimed, with that complete assurance which is rarely convincing, 'there cannot remain a doubt of success.' Walker admits that 'professional avocations and other circumstances' - which it is safe to assume includes lack of money - prevented him from making any such machine as he described on paper, and indeed the only experiment he himself records was confined to diminutive paper models. It should, however, be added that a contemporary -who as a resident of Barton-on-Humber doubtless wrote with some personal knowledge - stated that Walker made a machine, but 'was unable to raise himself from the platform on which the car was placed.' A Description of the Collection of Ancient Terracottas in the British Museum; with engravings.

London: Printed by W. Bulmer.and sold at the British Museum; and by G. and W. Nicol. 1810 - FIRST EDITION. 4to, 345 x 275 mms., a large-paper copy, pp. vii [viii explanation of title-page vignette], 39 [40 blank], 40 full-page engraved (several by George Cooke and James Neagle) plates (two folding) after drawings by William Alexander, very attractively bound in contemporary full straight-grain red morocco, bordered in gilt and blind on covers, gilt spine, all edges gilt. A fine copy with an equally good provenance, with the armorial bookplate of, probably, John Russell, sixth Duke of Bedford (1766 - 1839) on the front paste-down end-paper. A common book, to be sure, but a rather well-bound copy with a good provenance. The numismatist and archaeologist, Taylor Combe (1774 - 1826), worked in the British Museum from 1803 until his death and was responsible for some of the most useful and finely-printed works on his specialist subjects. Lowndes, in A Bibliographer's Manual of English Literature, notes that "Twelve copies [were] printed in folio for presents to Royal Personages only," without making clear the measurements of the so-called folio. This copy is certainly printed in 4s, but it is larger than any copy traced on Copac or WorldCat. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

415 x 655 mm.
