        [Grapes] The Frankindale

[London]: G. Brookshaw, 1810. Aquatint engraving, with some stipple, printed in colours and finished by hand. In good condition with some expertly repaired marginal tears. Image size: 16 x 13 inches. Sheet size: 22 ½ x 17 ¾ inches. A fine image from Brookshaw's masterpiece: 'Pomona Britannica; or, A Collection of the Most Esteemed Fruits'. George Brookshaw's 'Pomona Britannica' is the finest work on fruit and flowers ever produced. Its breathtaking images display a level of technical virtuosity and beauty that distinguish this magnificent work as a true work of art. As a retired cabinetmaker, Brookshaw produced his seminal botanical study late in his career, at first publishing it in parts and then as a complete edition in 1812. The fact that this outstanding work took ten years to complete is evident in the quality of its images and the care with which Brookshaw executed each individual picture. 'Pomona Britannica' was produced as a visual record of the best available varieties of fruit in an attempt to encourage gardeners to experiment with growing fruit, and illustrates examples found in the Royal gardens at Hampton Court, Kensington Gardens, and the private gardens of the Prince of Wales in Blackheath. 'Pomona Britannica' differs from other botanical works in its dark aquatinted backgrounds and its stylized compositions. By using aquatint to create a contrasting background, Brookshaw manages to produce a truly dramatic effect. His use of stylized composition distinguishes his pictures from the dry scientific illustrations found in other botanical studies and creates an exceptionally beautiful visual experience. 'Pomona Britannica' is not only a didactic study, it is a masterpiece of illustration in which every picture is a testament to the artist's talent and ingenuity. Cf. Dunthorne 50; cf. Great Flower Books (1990) p.81; cf. Nissen BBI 244; cf. Sandra Raphael Oak Spring Pomona 40a.

4to (265 x 215mm). pp.(8), xx, 353, (1); (4), 436; (4), iv, 376,(2), with 1 folded table. Contemporary calf, spines with 2 gilt lettered labels (slightly rubbed). Very rare text volumes of the first Russian circumnavigation of the globe. A large folio atlas accompanying the German text was published in 1814. The work was first published in Russian in St.Peterburg 1809-1812 likewise in 4to. "Its historic importance lies in the fact that the expedition commanded by Kruzenshtern was the first Russian circumnavigation of the globe, during which two ships - the Nadezhda and the Neva - visited and chartered the North Pacific area, including Alaska. They also discovered a number of hitherto unknown islands in the South Pacific" (Lada-Mocarski 62)./Second volume with some slight occasional marginal staining, the third volume with strong browning at the lower margin of the first 25 leaves sometimes affecting the printed text, the same to the last 10 leaves. The collation is similar to Lada-Mocarski, with one acception that our copy of the 3rd volume has one more leaf at the beginning; leaf 359/360 is numbered twice as is correct.//Arctic Bibliography 9377; Lada-Mocarski 62; Nissen ZBI, 2310.

Paris Arthus Bertrand () - In-4, 200 pp., IV cartes dépliantes H.T. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Piratical Seizure of the Brig Admiral Trowbridge, by Part of Her Crew, while lying at Anchor off the Island of Sooloo,

London: Thomas Tegg,, c.1810. August 21, 1807, communicated by Capt. Alexander Wallace, including the Murder of Mr. C. B. Lloyd, and the Narrow Escape of William Sharpe. Also the Captivity and Cruel Treatment of M. de Brisson, on the Coast of Barbary. Small octavo (178 × 98 mm). Neatly in later plain greenish drab paper wraps. Double-folding uncoloured aquatint frontispiece, Some damping at the fore-edge of the frontispiece, visible largely only from verso, some slightly whitening to the image surface on the light creases from old refolds, mild browning, overall a very good copy of a slight and fragile item. First edition. Uncommon, just four copies located on COPAC, but only that at Durham records the presence of the sensational folding plate, OCLC adds six more. The Admiral Trowbridge was laying at anchor off Sulu, North Borneo, when crew-members ashore noticed that she had begun to drift, and, as there were no boats in the water around her, "concluded that the crew had overpowered the officers and seized the vessel". Eventually the Sultan of Sulu was persuaded by the offer "of a reward of 5,000 Spanish dollars to those who might retake the vessel", to send one of his headmen "with three large prows well manned and armed, accompanied by his chosen slaves", but the captured vessel manages to evade them, they had "he had neared the brig several times; but whenever it blew, she always got off, and [they] could not get close enough to board."A report comes through a few days later that a vessel "answering to her description had passed under American colours some days before, steering towards the island of Ternate." The bloody events that occurred on-board were reported by the mate, William Sharpe, who was sent away by the mutineers "with two seacunnies [native seamen] and three others not concerned in the mutiny". This account was published in the Prince of Wales's Island Gazette, and subsequently in the Naval Chronicle. The latter part of this attractive little publication recounts the misadventures of Pierre-Raymond Brisson, a shipwrecked French colonial official who was enslaved in North Africa in 1785.

        Självporträtt i blå barett.

»Själfporträtt af Professor Sandberg» skrivet a tergo. 28 × 24 cm. Senare hos Sonja Hylén (1914-2008).Utställd: Konstnärshuset, Stockholm, Gustaf Fredriksons tavelsamling, januari 1926, kat. nr 87.Litteratur: Mauritz Beijerstein, Johan Gustaf Sandberg 1782-1854 (1928), kat. nr 118 (s. 192). Nationalmuseum äger detsamma i freskoteknik» (s. 4).         Hafod House

Published by White and Co, London 1810 - A picturesque view of Hafod House from "Tour to Hafod", a fine collection of plates depicting the mansion and its surrounding landscape engraved by Stadler after drawings by Smith. Comprised of 15 views, Tour to Hafod also included comprehensive descriptive text by the scientist and collector James Edward Smith. The work was most likely intended as a tribute to the social benefactor and literary man Thomas Johnes (1748-1816), who devoted much of his life to his home region of Cardiganshire, where he served as a lord-lieutenant, a colonel in the militia, and an MP for the borough of Cardigan. Located in Cardiganshire, Western Wales, Hafodychtryd or Hafod for short, was Johnes's country estate. Hafod House, his principal residence, was erected in 1785 in the "gothic" style of Thomas Baldwin of Bath. Smith describes it as being "situated on a rising ground, in a rich and beautiful valley, watered by the river Ystwith, and encompassed with bold hills, richly wooded, or a great variety of forms. These woods abound with magnificent water-falls, formed chiefly by three mountain streams that empty themselves into the Ystwith in different parts of the valley, and are never dry." Upon settling there, Johnes set about ameliorating the conditions of the local poor by providing them with comfortable housing and employing them in a planting project that would beautify the neighboring areas. In addition to his concern for social welfare, he was extremely interested in improving parts of Cardiganshire and actively involved himself in the building of roads and bridges. Born in Irthington in 1749, John "Warwick" Smith was an accomplished topographical draughtsman and watercolourist, who enjoyed the generous patronage of the Earl of Warwick. In addition to his fine engravings of Italy, he contributed numerous illustrations to topographical publications such as Select Views in Great Britain (1812), Views of the Lakes of Cumberland (1791-5), Tour through Wales (1794), and A Tour to Hafod (1810). In 1805, Smith became a member of the Watercolour Society, where he frequently exhibited his works. Cf. Abbey, Scenery of Great Britain and Ireland 533; cf. Dictionary of National Biography.         Upper part of the Pyran Cascade

Published by White and Co, London 1810 - A picturesque view of the Pyran falls near Hafod House from "Tour to Hafod," a fine collection of plates depicting the mansion and its surrounding landscape engraved by Stadler after drawings by Smith. In his text, J. E. Smith describes Pyran as "one of the most favourite water-falls" and explains how it "terminates an umbrageous glen in the most advantageous manner, opening upon the spectator by degrees, till the whole is seen in perfection" (p. 13). Upon settling there, Johnes set about ameliorating the conditions of the local poor by providing them with comfortable housing and employing them in a planting project that would beautify the neighboring areas. In addition to his concern for social welfare, he was extremely interested in improving parts of Cardiganshire and actively involved himself in the building of roads and bridges.         Ã‰loge Historique de L'imprimerie. Seconde Édtion

1810. Paris, Porthmann, imprimeur ordre. des A.A.I. et R. Madame, 1810. 2ff, 59pp. A nice uncut copy in orginal grey-blue wrappers. Second edition of this work that was printed for the first time in the same year under the title 'Essai historique sur l'Imprimerie'. The author, Jules Louis Melchior Porthmann was the son of a printer, and was born in Paris in 1790 and died in 1820. He was not even 20 years old when he took over his father's printing house and in the same year published the present work. "The book is eloquently written, in the most eulogistic strain, but does not contain any historical or technical matter. There are however many laudatory references to early Parisian printers." (Bigmore & Wyman about this second edition). The first edition contained 15 pages of notes at the end that have been omitted in the second edition and the title is changed into: 'Eloge Historique sur l'Imprimerie', probably because some of the reviews that were written on publication think more of it as an 'Eloge' as as an 'Essai'. Two of the reviews are reprinted in part in the third (enlarged) edition.

Less than three weeks before he left for New York City to deliver his pivotal Cooper Union speech, Lincoln writes a check to a local stove dealer

Partly-printed Document Signed, "A. Lincoln," a check, 7" x 2.25", filled out in his hand to "Elie Kreigh" for $3.70, drawn on the Springfield Marine & Fire Insurance Company. Slit cancellation barely affects "c" in signature, two small punch cancellations, a few minor contemporary ink smudges, extremely light soiling, light vertical crease, else fine condition. Elie Kreigh (1810-1885) was born in Maryland, and in his early years sold hats in Hagerstown, Maryland (Torch-Light, Hagerstown, Maryland, June 6, 1833, p. 4). In 1855, he moved his family to Springfield, where he established himself as a dealer in tin ware and stoves in a store about a block away from the state capitol building, and about five blocks from Lincoln's home (Polk's Springfield Directory, 1857). In June of 1860, the Lincolns purchased a stove from Kreigh, and popular tradition holds that Mary was so enthralled with it that she wanted to bring it to Washington the next year
