        TORPEDO WAR, AND SUBMARINE EXPLOSIONS

New York, 1810. Oblong quarto. Original printed wrappers, bound by a pebbled cloth backstrip. Wrappers torn and stained, foredge of front wrapper mended. Most leaves with some edge wear, final ten leaves with a small semi-circular tear in lower edge, not affecting text. Old vertical crease, light tanning, occasional offsetting. Overall, still a very good copy, in original condition. In a cloth chemise and slipcase, spine gilt. The rare first edition of Fulton's famous treatise on torpedo warfare, probably the most important early work devoted to this novel naval technology. Herein Fulton describes his system of submarine explosives which he had demonstrated to Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and other leaders from the House and Senate, at the home of his friend, Joel Barlow. The plates depict the brig, Dorothea, "as she was blown up on the 15th of Oct. 1805," a submerged torpedo mine, and other illustrations showing how the torpedo is carried aboard a vessel, how a harpoon is used in torpedo explosives, etc. One of the chapters is about "the Imaginary Inhumanity of Torpedo War." Fulton was a skilled artist, inventor, and civil engineer. A native of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, he spent twenty years abroad in England developing his talents and inventions. His chief work was in the design of canal systems, so important to commercial activity in 19th-century America, and in the development of steamboats. An important work of American military technology.

Broadside, begins: "La Suprema Junta Gubernativa de esta Capital, ha recibido con la mayor satisfaccion el voto sincero y generoso de muchos individuos Españoles Enropeos [sic] de Comercio de esta Ciudad ...".

On the day after the coup d'etat that deposed the viceroy, the leaders of the governing junta in Caracas announce that many of the city's Spanish and European merchants have given their support to the new government. Whether they did so willingly or because of pressure is not known, but this is clearly a statement that is directed at both the hold-out merchants and at those hotheads who might seek to extract compliance extra-governmentally. Llamosas and Tovar Ponte were among the leading figures of the early Independence movement in Venezuela. Both served as president of the Junta of Defense of the Rule of Fernando VII (later, The Revolutionary Junta), Llamosas 19 April - Aug 1810, and Tovar Aug 1810 - 2 March 1811. Additionally Tovar Ponte, the favorite son of an elite family, was a member of the 1811 Congress and a signer of the Venezuelan Act of Independence on 5 July of that year. This historic document was printed by Venezuela's first press, that of Gallagher and Lamb, which only arrived in Caracas in October of 1808, and it is universally dated as having come off the press on 20 April! This broadside was unknown to Medina and is only the 14th item in Pedro Grases chronological list of things printed in Venezuela. In his entry he located only the copies in the Public Record Office (London) and the Archivo de Indias (Seville). Searches of NUC, WorldCat, COPAC, and CCILA fail to find any copy at all. Further, no copies were found when searching the OPACs of the national libraries of Venezuela, Colombia, Spain, France, and England: Evidently, this is only the third known copy.

VUES DES CORDILLÈRES ET MONUMENS DES PEUPLES INDIGÈNES DE L'AMÉRIQUE

Paris, 1810. Half title. Large folio. Expertly bound to style in half morocco, preserving original brown boards, spine gilt. Plates and text very fresh and clean. Near fine. Untrimmed. This atlas is one of the most important publications resulting from the expedition to America in 1799-1804 of the great German scientist and explorer, Alexander von Humboldt, and the botanist, Aimé Bonpland. During their extensive trip, the two gathered masses of material relating to all aspects of the New World, and their work in the field and in publication set a new standard for scientific exploration and reporting. Humboldt and Bonpland sought to investigate geography, natural history, archaeology, and native customs. Their field explorations were supplemented by extensive research in Europe. The series of publications began in 1805 and took decades, the present volume being the first major work to appear. VUE DES CORDILLÈRES... is most notable for its remarkable aquatint plates of scenes in South and Central America, particularly the magnificent double-page plate of the great volcano of Chimborazo in the Andean highlands. Most of these were made after Humboldt's original sketches. His involvement in the publication was close, especially in checking the coloring, which was done under his personal supervision to ensure accuracy. These plates beautifully illustrate views, native costumes, and antiquities. The work is equally important as the first extensive treatment of surviving pre-Columbian and immediately post- Columbian Indian codices. The first publication of any part of the famed Dresden Codex, the most extensive of surviving pre-Columbian codices, is found herein, again with superb aquatint coloring. There are also color reproductions of the Codex Mendoza and plates drawn from other important codices. Humboldt's treatment of them is a landmark in the rediscovery of the pre-Columbian civilizations. "Every class of Mexican or Aztec, and Peruvian Antiquities, receives in this work the clearest philosophical analysis" - Field. "Many of the plates are beautifully colored; indeed, it is the most beautiful and generally interesting of Humboldt's works" - Sabin. The present copy includes the last twenty plates; these are frequently lacking. It does not include the sixteen- page introduction by Humboldt, dated 1813, which seems to be an indication that the present copy is an early issue.

THE HISTORIE OF FRIER RUSH: HOW HE CAME TO A HOUSE OF RELIGION TO SEEKE SERVICE . . . BEING FULL OF PLEASANT MIRTH AND DELIGHT FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

Harding and Wright for Robert Triphook, London 1810 - 222 x 159 mm (8 3/4 x 6 1/4"). 1 p.l., 37, [1] pp. ONE OF FOUR COPIES ON VELLUM. Contemporary red velvet by H. Faulkner (ticket on verso of front flyleaf), covers with wide Greek key border rolled in blind, flat spine with small remnant of a leather backstrip (that had been laid on to hide a binder's titling error), red moiré silk endleaves, turn-ins and pastedowns with rolls in blind, all edges gilt. Housed in a very good later leather-edged slipcase. With woodcut vignette on title. Verso to front flyleaf with bookplate of Edward Vernon Utterson; first preliminary blank with morocco bookplate of Hans Fürstenberg; rear pastedown with bookplate of John Kershaw; contemporary inked note on verso of front flyleaf listing the original owner of each of the four vellum copies of the present book; later pencilled note on same stating, "This copy was after-wards in the possession of Mr. George Smith, and it was [sold] in his [s]ale for £9.15.0." Spine mostly covered with (glue?) residue left by now basically missing leather backstrip, corners rubbed to board, portions of the joints torn, velvet nap somewhat diminished, a bit of natural rumpling to the vellum, a very few inoffensive spots to margins, but an entirely solid and (apart from the spine remnants) an agreeable copy of this curious book. This is a pleasing facsimile reprint of the 1620 English translation of a moral satire based upon a Medieval German legend about the Devil joining a monastery in the guise of a man. We offer it here in its very rare vellum issue and in an unusual velvet binding. As suggested by the title vignette, where he is arriving at the monastery door, Brother Rush causes much mischief in the religious house as part of his general mission to wander the earth, tempting people to do evil--with the underlying purpose of the narrative always being the moral edification and amusement of readers. In "A History of Caricature and Grotesque in Literature and Art," Wright notes that "one of the earliest . . . stories of mythic comedy transformed into, or at least presented under the guise of, humanity, is that of Brother Rush." Binder Henry Faulkner of London's Adelphi district has five specimens in the British Library's holdings, one of them covering "The Historie of Bevis of Hampton" commissioned by the original owner of the present volume, Edward Vernon Utterson (1775-1856), a British lawyer and antiquary. Owners of the other three vellum copies of "Rush" were: Sir William Baron Bolland (1771-1840), lawyer and bibliophile; Sir Mark Masterman Baron Sykes (1771-1823); and Miss [Frances Mary Richardson] Currer (1785-1861), whom Dibdin deemed in his "Reminiscences" to be "at the head of all female collectors in Europe." Later owner Hans Fürstenberg was a noted collector whose library was especially rich in 18th century French illustrated books. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[7] ff., 386 pp., plt.. 1810 One has here the sole edition of the standard and well-thought-of account of the Sanctuary of Jesus Christ at Chalma, the second most visited pilgrimage site in Mexico. The cave housing the Christ Crucified statue was a pre-Columbian sacred site and pilgrimage destination; miraculously the pre-Columbian statue with magical healing power morphed into the Christ image soon after it was visited by early Augustinian friars, who took over the cave and the surrounding area and build a church and religious compound. The original Christ statue was destroyed by fire in the 18th century. In addition to the wealth of information here about the origins of the cave as a site of miracles, its history throughout the colonial period, and accounts of miracles occurring there, this work also has important biographies of Augustinians of the 17th century who played important roles in the care and perpetuation of the site. The engraving shows the cave, the Christ figure, pilgrims, and Augustinian friars. 19th-century mottled sheep, abraded, missing spine label; spine is cracking down center, and volume may sometime split into two halves. Some brown stains, most notable in inner and upper or lower margins; lower outside corner of title?-page neatly excised. Old ink notes and scribblings.

THE DUTY AND AUTHORITY OF JUSTICES OF THE PEACE, IN THE STATE OF TENNESSEE

Nashville (TN): printed and sold by Thomas G. Bradford, 1810. 8vo.; 372, (7), (8)pp. Original full calf binding (edges and corners worn), leather spine label; three leaves with snags (binding faults?), resulting in the loss of a few letters; paper fault at edge of one leaf, resulting in the loss of several words. Still a sound copy for this book. First edition. A native of North Carolina, Haywood (1762-1826) moved to Tennessee in 1807 where he enhanced his already solid reputation as a jurist and historian, publishing a string of legal compilations and the earliest important histories of his adopted state; he served on the Tennessee Supreme Court for the last 12 years of his life. A rare book, rather amateurishly printed and bound, it evokes the state of frontier life. An important association copy, with the following inscription: "Alex. Forgeye/acting Justice of/the Peace for/Knox County/February 29th 1812." Though rather widely held in institutional collections (OCLC locates 22 copies), no copy has appeared at auction in more than 30 years (ABPC 1976-2007). American Imprints 20311.         Sketch of the Town & Environs of Port Louis Explanatory of the Operations of the British Army under the Command of Majr. Genl. the Honble. Jne. Abercrombie. Drawn by the Author. Decr. 1810 [manuscript title]

[N.p., but possibly Port Louis. mid- 19th century]. Manuscript sheet map, 10¼ x 13½ inches. On drafting linen. Handcolored. Old fold. Minor toning. Manuscript map depicting troop deployments on the island of Mauritius in December of 1810, when the British finally overcame the French defenses and captured the island. The area from Grande Baie to Grande Riviere is shown, with the coast and terrain in between, documenting the route from the point of debarkation to the town of Port Louis. The legend gives different colored bars for troop positions on the subsequent days of the march, and includes figures for denoting passable and impassable routes. A similar manuscript map is described by Toussaint in his bibliography of Mauritius. The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island, taking possession in 1598. After exploiting the island's dense forests for a century and introducing the cultivation of sugar cane and cotton, the Dutch abandoned the colony in 1710. The French soon claimed it as "Ile de France," and the island remained under the control of the French East India Company until 1767. During the long war between France and England at the beginning of the 19th century, Mauritius proved to be an important strategic naval base, and as a result the British took charge of the island in 1810, and the Treaty of Paris confirmed official British possession in 1814. It remained an important sugar producing colony, and in the 20th century agricultural production was expanded to include tea, rice, and other produce.A handsome map illustrating a key event in the island's history. Toussaint, F599 (ref).

THE POLITE REPOSITORY, OR POCKET COMPANION; Containing An Almanack... Ornamented With Elegant Engravings And Ruled Pages for Occurrences, Cash, Account, Etc., Etc. To Be Continued Annually.

for W. Peacock,: London:, 1810. London: for W. Peacock, 1810. One of the missing link volumes in the history of Humphry Repton's contributions to Peacock's POLITE REPOSITORY, the English almanack renowned for its beautifully printed format, and, especially, its exquisite miniature views and engraved decorations. In this 1810 issue there is an identified drawing by Repton entitled "The entrance Of Woodchester Park, Lord Ducie" which was engraved by W. Hawkins and used as a frontispiece. Within the text of the almanack, heading the versos of the double-paged monthly engraved diary spaces, are twelve miniature engravings of scenes, most of them showing country places and gardens. They are: Cowes Harbour from Mr. Mackenzies garden; Moor Hall, Essex. Seat of John Parry Esqr.; Cobham Hall, Kent, the Seat of Earl of Darnley; Scene at Purfleet , from the Kings Yard; Bedwell Park, Herts., Seat of Sir Culling Smith Bart.; the Thornery, at Woburn Abbey; Cascade at Kidbrook, Sussex; the Grange, Waltham-Stowe, Seat of Thos. Lane Esqr.; Villa at Tottenham, Seat of Wm. Row Esqr.; the Gate House at Stoneleigh Abbey, the Revd Thos. Leigh; Scene from Belvedere, Kent, Seat of Lord Eardley; and Scene at Higham-Hill, Essex, Seat of John Harman. Esqr. Of these twelve views, Nigel Temple, in "HUMPHRY REPTON, ILLUSTRATOR, AND WILLIAM PEACOCK'S POLITE REPOSITORY 1790-1811." (GARDEN HISTORY Vol.16, No.. 2, Autumn, 1988 pp. 169) notes that six are associated with Repton professionally but, at the time of writing, there were no known original watercolors by Repton to connect with the engravings, nor any acknowledgement by Peacock that Repton had drawn them. In fact, "only ten of the miniature originals (watercolours) have been recorded extant (Temple p. 165). The exhibition catalogue, HUMPHRY REPTON LANDSCAPE GARDNER 1752-1818 BY Carter, Good and Laurie, (Norwich, 1982) accounted for Repton's REPOSITORY illustrations only up to the year 1808. Since then, copies for 1809 and 1810 have been identified and examined. Repton is known to have been unsatisfied with the frontispiece engraved by I. Smith for the 1809 issue (up until this point John Peltro had done the engravings), and it is suggested that he stopped producing drawings for the publication at this point. However, this 1810 issue does include a frontispiece drawing by Repton and prepared by yet another engraver, W. Hawkins (for more on the changes in the Repository at this time, see Temple, again in Garden History p. 169). Temple hoped that publishing a list of the small views in the 1809, 1810 and 1811 issues "might lead to new attributions of drawings or works. Bearing in mind Repton's talent for making his work known, more drawings of his work may be identified here. 12mo(11.4 x 7.4 cm); 115 +(1) pp. including engraved frontispiece; with 14 vignette views of which 12 head the monthly diary pages. Original plain wrappers, small tear without loss to one half centimeter at bottom of spine; half moon shaped darkening on upper and lower covers where the booklet is removed from the slipcase; a.e.g.; small red dated stamp (1 shilling) on page 49; a.e.g.; in decoratively printed slipcase with floral borders and center title vignette on upper and lower covers.         Histoire des Wahabis, depuis leur origine jusqu'a la fin de 1809.

Paris, Crapelet, 1810.. 8vo. (4), VIII, 222, (2) pp. Remains of original grey temporary wrappers. Stored in gilt modern quarter morocco box.. First edition of this fundamental study of Wahhabism, not translated into Arabic until 2005 ("Tarih al-wahhabiyin mundu na 'atihim hatta 'am 1809 m.", published in Riyadh by Darat al-Malik 'Abd-al-'Aziz). Corancez had lived in Aleppo for eight years as French consul. He married a Syrian and had first-hand information about the Wahhabi movement in Egypt, Syria, and Baghdad. He published his book soon after the followers of the Moslem reformer Abd-el Wahhab conquered the holy cities of Mecca and Medina in 1805, an event that fueled a strong interest in the movement throughout Europe. "This sect, which abhorred all loose living, attracted the attention of a number of travellers. Corancez' account of the Wahabis precedes by many years that of Burckhardt, which was published posthumously in 1830, although both men were living and travelling in Syria at the same time, and presumably knew each other" (Atabey). As Burrell comments, "the final merits - and challenges - of this book are [... that] Corancez was prepared to reflect upon a range of issues which remain relevant and controversial, for many people in the Middle East today. These include the nature of Islam and its apparent resistance to self-doubt and the challenge of change, the complex attitude adopted by Muslims to Christians and Jews, the status of the Prophet Mohammed within Islam, the reasons for the enduring nature of despotic rule in the Middle East, the significance of the different status afforded men and women [...]". - Includes the sometimes-lacking errata final leaf. Slight brownstaining as common; untrimmed as issued with the publisher's temporary grey-blue wrapper largely preserved. Spine chipped; upper cover frayed and partly pasted to half-title. The Atabey copy (in contemporary half morocco) sold for 3,800 at Sotheby's in 2002. - Macro, Bibliography of the Arabian Peninsula, 750. Atabey 282. Gay 3461. Querard I, 143. Not in Blackmer.

Engraved dedication leaf, 69 engraved plates on 68 leaves (27 hand coloured, printed in colours or printed in colours and finished by hand [1 of these double-page], 4 printed in sepia), engraved dedication. Expertly bound to style in half morocco preserving original brown paper-covered boards, titled in gilt on spine A lovely copy of one of the great monuments to scientific exploration, with superb colour-printed and hand-coloured aquatints: "The most beautiful and generally interesting of all Humboldt's works" (Sabin). This work is one of the most important publications to result from the expedition to America in 1799-1804 of the great German scientist and explorer, Alexander von Humboldt, and the botanist, Aimé Bonpland. During their extensive trip, the two gathered a mass of material relating to all aspects of the New World, and their work in the field and the subsequent publications set a new standard for scientific exploration and reporting. Humboldt and Bonpland set out to investigate the area's geography, natural history, archaeology, and native customs, supplementing, their field explorations, with extensive research in Europe. The series of publications resulting from the expedition began in 1805 and took decades to publish, the present volume being the first major work from the series to appear. Vue des Cordillères. is most notable for its remarkable aquatint plates of scenes in South and Central America, particularly the magnificent double-page plate of the great volcano of Chimborazo in the Andean highlands. Most of these were made from Humboldt's original sketches. His involvement in the publication was close, especially in checking the colouring, which was done under his personal supervision to insure accuracy. These plates beautifully illustrate views, native costumes, and antiquities. The work is equally important as the first extensive treatment of surviving pre-Columbian and immediately post-Columbian Indian codices. The first publication of any part of the famed Dresden Codex, the most extensive of surviving pre-Columbian codices, is found herein, again with superb colouring. There are also coloured prints of the Codex Mendoza and plates drawn from various other important codices. Humboldt's treatment of them is a landmark in the rediscovery of the pre-Columbian civilizations. "Every class of Mexican, Aztec, and Peruvian Antiquity receives in this work the clearest philosophical analysis" (Field). The present copy includes the last twenty plates: these are frequently lacking. It does not include the 16pp. introduction by Humboldt, dated 1813 - which seems to be an indication that the present copy is an an early issue. Field 739; Hill 839; Lipperheide 1630; Palau 117026; Pilling Proof-Sheets 1871; Sabin 33754. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

A little rubbed on the boards, contemporary repair to the front board of volume II, minor worm incursions on the lower joint of volume I, and the front joint of volume II, light browning and occasional spotting, a very good set in unrestored contemporary condition. First edition. Having lost Pondicherry (Puducherry) in the siege of 1793, the French regained it under the terms of the Treaty of Amiens, but in fact Henry Wellesley refused to cede it, and therefore when Renouard de Sainte-Croix (1767-1840) arrived in 1802 he was almost immediately imprisoned. A soldier-savant, he had been sent out to help organise the defence of the Philippines, but following his release he undertook a two year long survey of southern India including the Coromandel and Malabar coasts. He then departed on a thorough tour of the entire east Asian region taking in Malacca, Mindanao, Manilla, the Marianas, Luzon, Macao, the Camarines, the Bissayes (Visayas), the gold mines at Mabulao, and on his return voyage Canton, Cochinchina and Tonkin, with around two thirds of the third volume here being dedicated to his experiences in China. Written in epistolary form, de Sainte-Croix's approach encompasses history, geography, natural history, ethnography, industry and commerce, with a keen eye to international trade. A contemporary review in L'Esprit des journaux, françois et étrangers, remarked that; "For many people nothing makes more enjoyable and interesting reading than voyages; they offer the mind a tableau of exotic sights around the globe; or they explore the laws and customs of various peoples; or explain new methods in the practice of agriculture, commerce of navigation; and in this triple aspect M. de Sainte-Croix's voyage is one of the most curious to have been offered in a long time. Those who seek only amusement in such works, will find in it, despite of its complete veracity, all of the interest that fiction sometimes lends to the accounts of certain travellers" (January, 1811, pp.55-6). de Sainte-Croix was also the author, under a pseudonym, of L'Hindoustan, ou Religion, moeurs, usages, arts et métiers des Hindous (1816); compiled a two volume statistical survey of Martinique; produced memoirs on sugar production and slavery in the French colonies; translated and edited Staunton's Ta Tsing Leu Lee for the French market; and his Mémoire sur la Chine adressé à Napoléon 1er was translated and published in Toung Pao by Cordier in 1901. The present work was published in German in 1811, but not into English. Commercially uncommon, this is a very pleasing copy of this important early nineteenth-century French account of Asia.
