Pazzoni 1810 In 16, pp. 271 + (1b). London:: printed for T.Boosey, 4, Old Broad Street, Royal Exchange:, 1810.. Fourth edition, with very large additions.. Hardcover. VG+. [iv] (two engraved title pages - see below) + iii + (4-)249 + [7] index +[4] adverts. [The Dogs title page continues: Containing a description of every disease to which they are generally liable, and the mode of cure: being the result of nearly twenty years' diligent attention to the subject. Together with a very copious detail of the symptoms and progress of madness in dogs, with a preventive remedy both for the human and brute. By Delabere Blaine. 1810. (no printer or publisher stated. The Dogs section begins with an introduction at p.137.)] Formerly disbound, the first title page and the final (advertisement) leaf have some soiling and a little wear to the edges. Slight browning to paper, contents otherwise very good. 12mo, in very nice new binding of mid green Victorian cloth, ruled in blind to the front, spine ruled in gilt with gilt title on dark green lettering-piece, and date on black at base of spine. **** Not only is this book rare in an early printing, but none of the holdings listed on copac appear to have the second, Diseases of Dogs title page, which has a very nice sharp engraved vignette of dogs (whereas the vignette on the Horses and Dogs title page shows only horses): neither can I find a record of the Diseases of Dogs ever having been printed as a separate title. ****

Lambertjourneyed to Canada with a relative sent by the Board of Trade to promotecultivation of hemp there. He provides a vivid picture of the social, political, and economic condtions in the St. Lawrence Valley, where hespent his first year. The second leg of his journey took him through NewYork, part of New England and the South. While Labert "admired the easyindepen-dence and happiness of the Canadians, and the rising prosperityand freedom of the Americans", he believed his native Britain superiorto both fledging countries. Written in an engagingly intimate style,Lambert's narrative quickly passed through three editions. He describedthe Indians' way of life and their decline, divided the population of thetowns and countryside into social classes, and with numerous anecdotesrecounted the ways and customs of the habitants and the town-dwellers.His illustrations for the work, in slightly na‹ve but neverthelessstriking manner, depict some of the places visited, objects of everydayuse, and the clothing worn by women, priests, soldiers, seminarystudents, and Indians' (Jacqueline Roy in DCB). .

Ad Timoleonem de Cossé-Brissac ... Ode Alcaica

Parma: Typis Bodonianis, 1810. First edition, inscribed by the author. Boards. Very Good/Exceedingly rare and ephemeral Bodoni printing of a poem in Latin Alcaic stanzas by the Genoese prelate Placido Maria Tadini (later Cardinal Tadini) in praise of Napoleon's administrator in Genoa during the years of the Ligurian Republic, and of the role Genoa played in Napoleon's victory over the Austrians at Vienna in 1809. Napoleon installed the French Duke Timoleon de Cossé-Brissac as prefect of the departments of Marengo and Genoa (both in modern Italy) in April,1809. Napoleon's rout of Archduke Maximilian at Vienna took place the following month, effectively chasing the Austrians out of Italy. The up-and-coming prelate praises the prefect for helping to create "an opulent peace over Italian lands." Brief as it is (four leaves), Bodoni spared no art in its production. A few examples survive in Italian libraries; OCLC locates no copies present in its consortium. The most recent auction record we could locate dates to 1964. There is no record of another copy inscribed by the author.. Folio (42cm); [4] leaves (last blank). Exemplary Bodoni title page, embellished with armorial stamp in red ink (the author's?) above author's inscription, and ownership stamp of John Earl Brownlow. Bound by Brownlow (after 1850) in tan paper-covered boards with gilt title on upper board. Wear to boards with superficial crack along upper joint, and top layer of paper on spine largely perished. Faint foxing to leaves. Text somewhat shaken in binding. Grand armorial bookplate of British eccentric Francis Henry Egerton, 8th Earl of Bridgewater (1756-1829) and an ancestor of Brownlow, which reads "The honourable Francis Henry Egerton, Prince of the Holy Roman Empire, etc, etc, etc.;" morocco bookplate of Leroy Arthur Sugarman, book label of Crosby Gaige, and bookplate of John Earl Brownlow. Author's inscription ("Donné par l'auteur") inked on title page below arms. Reference: Brooks, 1084 ("Questo opuscolo e' assai bello"); De Lama II,

Otsego, NY: Printed by H. & E. Phinney, Jun. and sold by them and L. & I. Todd, wholesale and retail, 1810. First Edition. Pp. [1-]87, '86'-'87', 90-107.  (Toned, corners rounded, with partial loss to pagination of final leaf). 1 vols. 12mo. Original leather-backed paper-covered boards (spine chipped, small splits to joints, various repairs to covers, covers re-covered using period materials). Provenance: William H. Smith (a number of early signatures on front pastedown). First Edition. Pp. [1-]87, '86'-'87', 90-107.  (Toned, corners rounded, with partial loss to pagination of final leaf). 1 vols. 12mo. First edition and rare on the market: the title is a trifle misleading as this book is intended for the businessman as much as the student. The author makes it clear in his preface that his intention is to provide 'the information, which is necessary to transact the common business of life with facility and dispatch'. The subjects covered are, in the main, more suitable for the counting house than the school room: reduction of currencies; tare and trett [sic.]; interest; commission; brokerage; insurance; compound interest; rebate or discount; equation of payments; interest on bonds; barter; fellowship; allegation [sic.]; useful rules for mechanics, merchants, &c.; useful forms for transacting business. Samuel went on to become a prominent lawyer in New York City. AAS 286476; Sabin 90538; Shaw & Shoemaker  21409

Cedergréen, 1810. 8:o. (2),156,(2 blanka,3) s. Sthlm, A. J. Nordström, 1808. 8:o. 84 s. Första häftet innehåller bl.a.

The etched plates were purposefully designed and printed "a semplice contorno" -- with simple lines -- so that individual plates could be watercoloured. An intriguing concept for artistic training, architectural and perspective instruction, and for documenting the prevailing subject matter used by contemporary artists, interior decorators and theatrical set designers. The views include imaginary cityscapes and landscapes in Italy, among which the "Gran Veglio" from Dante; prisons based on Piranesi's Carceri; American rustic cabins and indigenous Indian architectural structures; imaginary Egyptian and classical Roman buildings, plazas and interiors; Chinese and Arabian palaces, mosques and plazas; catacombs; landscape gardens; Grand Tour towns and romantic landscape views; classical ruins; Romantic rustic scenes; and numerous imaginary architectural constructs. The premise that these expansive plates would have been fully coloured is compelling. Well executed, the result could be both magnificent and inspired. The taste is completely of its time. Several etchings provide reference in the legends to theatrical and operatic performances. Many of these images certainly can be traced to the grand theatrical scenery at La Scala being designed by Alessandro Sanquirico (1777-1849). Antonio Basoli (1774-1848) was a Bolognese artist and member of the Reale Accademia di Belle Arte in Bologna, who is best known for his work in the theatre set design; he was greatly inspired by the work of Sanquirico in Milan, and some of which is recorded in his Collezione de Varie Scene Teatrali. Francesco Cocchi, who rendered Basoli's designs for this book, was his apprentice. The etchings were done by students of Basoli, Cocchi, and another professor, Francesco Rosaspina -- an art school effort in entirety. Scarce work; due to the stated intention on the title-page that this work was meant to be dismembered and the individual plates coloured, few copies seemed to have survived. Plates I, XXXIV, and XLVII on different paper stock. Rebacked with original spine laid down. PROVENANCE: Large "B" inscribed in upper outer corner of front pastedown. Berlin Katalog 4165. Brunet I, 692.

Hoboken 11, 345 and plate 181 (same watermark as present copy). Hamburg, Öffentliche Bücherhallen (municipal library). RISM M4508. Böhme published several editions of the piano-vocal score; Köchel does not distinguish among them. RISM M4509 is not credited to Neefe; the copy at the Royal Danish Library in Copenhagen carries plate number 42. RISM M4510 (including Hirsch IV, 131) and the copy at the Staats- und Stadtbibliothek Augsburg are also different: the credit to Neefe is lacking; the word "Pianoforte" is misspelled "Pianoforto"; the contents are arranged in the original two acts (as suggested by the title) rather than the spurious four, and one number, the duet of Zerlina and Don Ottavio, "Ach Schätzchen, lass mich laufen" (i.e., "Restate qua"; composed later) is added; also, Hirsch cites plate number 300; not in the Augsburg copy, and a pagination running to 209. The pictorial title is basically the same as that of the first edition of the full score by Breitkopf & Härtel (1801); only the line crediting the reduction and the imprint are new.

An amazing content letter. Hull dispels rumors of a war with France but despairs of further help for the Navy from Congress: "?we have news to day Bonaparte has Clasp't his Paw on the American Property at St. Sabastians and that he is about to Declare War against the United States"

n.p., March 5, 1810. 7.75" x 9.75". "Autograph Letter Signed, ""I Hull,"" and ""I H,"" in the postscript, 2 pages, front and verso, 7.75"" x 9.75"", [Boston], March 5, 1810 to a fellow officer discussing rumors of a French declaration of war against the U.S., problems in securing more funding for the Navy from Congress and his correspondent's prospects for a promotion. Toned at extreme margins with minor wear, light folds, a few minor mounting remnants on second page not affecting text, else very good. Hull's letter reads in large part: ""Since writing the enclosed Letter [not present] I have been informed by the Dept. that his Services are necessary at this place for the present but when the other Ship is on[ce?] fitted out. I may Expect Either the Congress or Constellation - we have news to day Bona[parte] has Clasp't his Paw on the American Property at St. Sabastians [sic] and that he is about to Declare War against the United States. We have also a rumor that Great Britain is about to send another Minister to the United States - we are now a Long time without news from Europe that can be depended on - report Says to day that all Spain has fallen Expect Cadiz This however I think is correct?" ""Gibbon[?] has received your letter he is now at Portland, but not very pleased[?]- my Letters form Washington Express doubts whether much will be done for the Navy."" While admitting that the navy's efforts to obtain increased funding ""will find enemies in the house ?"Thank god however Randolph is not there - ""Write me soon and often and if I can send you an notions from New England you have only to command me - Letters from Malta say all our Friends are well - Admiral Keats is governor - Ball is dead. Higgins is living like a rabol[?] but has lost all his flesh from having a Pretty Wife. he lives in the Country. I understand he wishes to come to this Country - our Friends at Naples "" Hull then adds a short postscript updating his correspondent on family news and the possibility for a future promotion: ""Tell W. among his family is all well but I have not been able to se[e] them lately owing to the hole[?] he left me with - I have since a cough and fever I think you have a better chance for Promotion than you have had for many years - Bainbridge has a Cough - Capt Nicholson is not long for this country - So you may look out for better times"" According to various reports coming from Europe, Napoleon had ordered the property of all neutral ships (including U.S. vessels) at Spanish ports to be seized. These actions appeared to indicate that Bonaparte was planning to declare war against the United States?"a rumor that proved to be unfounded (""MORE SEIZURES"" The Repertory, Boston, March 6, 1810, p. 2). At the start of 1810, Hull, who was then in command of the Boston Navy Yard overseeing the repairs to the frigate Chesapeake, applied to the Navy Department for a command. To this, Secretary of the Navy Paul Hamilton responded on February 20, 1810 that he was to ""Remain at Boston for the present. Your services may be highly useful at that place in superintending the repairs of the Chesapeak,"" assuring the commodore that when a command became available, it would be granted to him (Paul Hamilton to Isaac Hull, Feb. 20, 1810, quoted in Garnder W. Allen, ed., Commodore Hull: Papers, 1929, p. 12). That spring, the Navy Department assigned Hull to the frigate President in a squadron commanded by John Rogers (commanding the Constitution). Because Rogers preferred the President, the two captains traded ships before spending the season cruising the eastern seaboard. Funding for the Navy was a perennial concern, but especially following Jefferson's two terms in office. Jefferson, never a proponent of a strong army or navy, practically mothballed many of the frigates constructed in the 1790s, preferring to use smaller gunboats for defensive purposes. However, the continual conflicts with the Barbary states of North Africa ensured that at least a few of those frigates would remain in service, so when war between the United States and Great Britain broke out in 1812, the country was not completely unprepared. We have yet to determine to which Randolph Hull refers. While Thomas Mann Randolph, Thomas Jefferson's son-in-law, had recently left Congress, another Jefferson ally, John Randolph (who remained in Congress at the time of Hull's writing), remained in the House."

A Brief Account of the Colony of Port Jackson, in New South Wales; Its Native Inhabitants, Productions, &c. &c. with An Interesting Account of The Murder of Mr. Clode, late of that settlement, as communicated by the Rev. Richard Johnstone, late Chaplain of the Colony, to Joseph Hardcastle, Esq., Treasurer of the Missionary Society

Dublin: for the author, 1810. Slim octavo, 24 pp., half red morocco by Aquarius, a fine copy. A disgruntled version of events. Sixth edition, printed in Dublin, and very rare; a disgruntled account of Governor Hunter's administration written by George Bond, a disgraced Ensign of the New South Wales Corps.Bond shipped to Port Jackson on the Barwell in 1797. In the course of the voyage he was implicated in an attempted mutiny, and arrived in Port Jackson in chains. Ordered to face a court-martial, his commanding officer Major Foveaux interceded on his behalf, and Governor John Hunter agreed to accept Bond's resignation of his commission instead, demanding that he return to England immediately.Eager to acquit himself, Bond took to print as soon as he returned to England, first publishing this important account in Southampton in 1803. 'Bond gives an account of the operation of the convict system and the economic corruption in the colony, and describes early efforts to encourage free settlers. As well, he includes comments on the Aborigines and on natural history. All in all there is a wealth of personal observation. Bond's account, in any edition, is a worthy and important addition to a collection' (Australian Rare Books). Bond therefore presents the other side of the story of transportation to Port Jackson. His account of the new colony also highlights the issues which were to evolve into a deep rift between Bligh and Macarthur, problems that ultimately led to the appointment of Governor Macquarie.Quite apart from its interest as a very early private account of Port Jackson, this book is significant for printing a lengthy letter from the Reverend Richard Johnston, regarding the murder of the missionary Samuel Clode in Sydney. The self-published book was successful and ran into seven small editions, each printed in differing places. Any edition of this important work is very scarce - the first, fifth, and sixth edition are all equally rare - and no copies of the second or third editions are recorded. Ferguson lists only two copies of this sixth edition. No copies are added in the Addenda and the Mitchell and National Library copies remain the sole institutional holdings of the sixth edition to this day.

Beautiful contemporary binding by Taylor and Hessey, with their names stamped in gilt to fore edge thickness of upper boards, of full dark blue straight grained morocco with fine, delicate gilt titles and tooling to spines, decorative gilt panelling to boards, grey end papers with fine gilt dentelle; all edges gilt. With 12 copper engravings. Plates offsetting on to text; light age toning; gilt tooling a little dusty. A superb example of Taylor and Hessey's craftmanship.
