1809. Used w/defects - please see below for details and photos. JOHN ADAMS-GENERAL BENJAMIN LINCOLN'S COPIES (English) (Acquired From Heritage Auction Galleries - please see photo documentation) John Adams, Correspondence with original parts as issued. Lacks part 5 and lacks part 10 pages 533-576 but has signature of General Benjamin Lincoln and Lincoln's son Theodore Lincoln who managed the General's Library. A rare collection. Much toned and partially torn at times, as well as foxing throughout. This set was not well cared for but the signature of General Lincoln makes this set especially meaningful. The set was published by Everett and Munroe of Boston in 1809 (a first edition) so it is likely that this particular set may have been picked up "hot off the press" so to speak. The compendium of the collection of these documents were extrapolated from the prior years Boston Patriot newspapers regarding John Adams submitted correspondence while in the capacity of President, who also was a close personal friend of General Lincoln. General Benjamin Lincoln fought under General George Washington and accepted the surrender of the British General Cornwallis at Yorktown after being forced to surrender himself and his troops earlier to the British. Lincoln was a staunch supporter of the fight for freedom and the education of children, setting up a school for educating children in his home in the town of Hingham, Massachusetts. His family were one of the first founders of Hingham and this particular publication of John Adams papers would have been a very keen interest to General Linc … [Click Below for Full Description]

Clubb, Stephen
Boston, 1809. 8vo (8.25" x 5.5"), lacking wrappers. 60 pp. The personal narrative of a British-American sailor who was wrongfully arrested and imprisoned by the French during the ongoing Peninsular War. Stephen Clubb-born in England and not yet a naturalized citizen of the U.S.-was serving as second mate on the American ship Hyades when he was arrested by the French in January 1808. Clubb was married to an American woman and on his way to settle in the U.S. He and his wife had embarked on the ship Triton bound for Baltimore; however, when the ship was forced into the Isle of Wight the couple had to seek another passage via the ship Hyades. When Hyades was captured by the French, Clubb revealed himself an Englishman and pilot of the ship and was subsequently arrested, despite American neutrality. As he spells out here, his unlawful detention was in direct opposition to an 1809 treaty in place between France and the U.S. Based on his prison diary, Clubb's narrative covers the period from December 1807 to June 1809. Included are interesting descriptions of his travel as a prisoner; visits from his wife; comments on the French people; teaching English in prison, and so forth. Ultimately, Clubb's friend, a Mr. Pigault, presents his case to Napoleon himself-following which he is liberated and he and his wife are each granted passports. The title-page states the work was "Published at the particular request of a number of citizens of the U.S., who were in confinement, and treated as British prisoners of war, when Mr. Clubb left France, which was in the month of July last, he being … [Click Below for Full Description]

Broadside; Barclay Allardice of Ury, Robert
1809. London: 1809. 15-1/4" x 9-3/4" broadside. London: 1809. 15-1/4" x 9-3/4" broadside. An Honest Sportsman and a Crooked Judge [Broadside]. [Barclay Allardice of Ury, Robert (1779-1854)]. Williams, [Charles] [d.1830], Artist. Just-Ass Will O'The Wisp and The Pedestrian. [London]: Printed and Published by G. Smeeton, St. Martin's Lane, [c.1809]. 15-1/4" x 9-3/4" broadside, single-column text below headline and 7-1/4" x 9-1/4" hand-colored vignette. Moderate toning, faint horizontal headline through center, some edgewear, a few tiny stains to margins. $750. * Popularly known as "Captain Barclay" and "The Celebrated Pedestrian," Barclay Allardice of Ury helped to establish the sport of pedestrianism, an early form of racewalking. In 1809 Barclay won a prize of 1000 guineas by walking 1000 miles in 1000 hours. When this challenge was announced, it captured the public imagination and inspired countless bets. Our broadside connects this event to the perennial theme of judges and lawyers who try to prevail through legal trickery. The image depicts Barclay and a bewigged owl representing a judge, who is trying to present legal obstacles that will cause Barclay to lose his wager, which will enable one of the judge's "little owls" to win his bet of "500 goldfinches." Barclay's ripostes to the judge point out the venality of the legal profession. Not in BM Satires.

Dirección de Hidrografía de Madrid
Madrid, 1809 18 x 26 cm. [Click Below for Full Description]

SAVAGE, JAMES
London: Printed for and by William Savage, 1809. Three volumes, plus the first part of volume four, No. 19. 8vo. 218 x 130 mm., (8 x 5 inches). iv, 236, [2] plus 2 engraved plates; iv, 286, [2] pp., iv, 286 pp.; 48 pp. Bound in full English calf, decorated gilt spine and bands, boards with embossed and gilt fillet borders, all edges gilt; edges rubbed boards lightly rubbed, joints with minor cracks but sound. All published of this short-lived bibliographical journal, thought to have been started by the Greek scholar Richard Porson, Principal Librarian at the London Institution, and taken up by his assistant James Savage after his death. Porson, renowned for his publications on classical writers was also a distinguished calligrapher and the two engravings in this volume that illustrate his work. His letter forms were adopted by Oxford University Press and became the mostly commonly used type face used in the production of their Greek texts. The short essays that makeup the content of The Librarian reflect Porson's interests. In addition to remarks on recent publications, accounts of printers and engravers, and government documents, the text includes numerous articles on manuscript and library collections. Just in the first year of the publication, articles appear on the manuscript holdings of the Royal Society Library, the manuscripts in Lambeth, the British Museum collections, and the manuscript collection of Sir Mathew Hale, housed in Lincoln Inn. This copy from the library of A. R. A. Hobson, with his bookplate.

VALERIANI MOLINARI, Luigi.
Bologna, Masi, 1809. 8vo, pp. [2], xli, [3 errata], 252; with one folding printed table at the end; title-page skilfully repaired at gutter, a few pinholes in the inner margins, some occasional light marginal waterstaining, but a very good copy, uncut in contemporary printed patterned wrappers.First edition of a rare work of political economy presented as a science which stands as an organic complement to a nation's set of legislation. The main elements of the Western tradition of political and thought, from Plato and Aristotle through to Justinian, Hobbes and Locke to the theorists of jusnaturalism, are gathered and examined with respect to their incorporation of economic elements within a legislative body.'In his day Valeriani [1758-1828] was widely known; he wrote many works, some of which were never published . Trained both as a lawyer and an economist, his writings bear especially on the relation between economics and law. He devoted himself with assiduity to the theory of value and wrote a book on the subject. He maintains that the law of value depends on supply and demand, supporting this theory with a geometrical illustration from the relative quantities of both; he combats the theory of cost of production and engaged in a controversy on this question with Melchiorre Gioja. In illustrating the theory of value he employs mathematical formulæ. These are, however, not employed as a means of investigating the phenomena of prices, but are only symbols employed to express in mathematical language economic laws already known– as Montanari justly said' (Palgrave III, 605f). … [Click Below for Full Description]

CHARLES DARWIN (1809-1882). Darwin revolutionized science with his groundbreaking-but-controversial theory of evolution, which he introduced in his seminal On the Origin of Species, published in 1859.ALS. 2pg. 6” x 8”. July 10 [circa 1872 to 1874]. Down. An autograph letter signed “Ch Darwin” on his “Kent” letterhead. He penned: “I have much pleasure in informing you that the work you refer to was published under the following title. ‘The Structure and Distribution of Coral Reef 1842, Smith Elder & Co., London’ – I am not sure whether it is now – separately or if bound up with two other titles, also published by the same firm. Pray do not think about the postage, as I have pleasure in answering your query.” 1842’s The Structure and Distribution of Coral Reefs, Being the first part of the geology of the voyage of the Beagle, under the command of Capt. Fitzroy, R.N. during the years 1832 to 1836 was an early scientific book after his five-year voyage on the Beagle. By the 1870s, once Darwin became famous, his early work was out of print and difficult to locate. In 1873, he wrote to his publisher, Smith Elder, asking them to republish the now-popular book. The three-volume set, as mentioned by Darwin, was 1851’s Geology of the ‘Beagle’: Geological observations on coral reefs, volcanic islands, and on South America published by Smith, Elder. The letter has a fold separation along the central fold and some light staining to the area at the top of the central fold. It is matted in green and framed in wood. CARNOT, Lazare.
Third edition of an influential manual on fortification, written for use at the military academy at Metz. After the fall of the "impregnable" fortress of Vlissingen to British troops in 1809, emperor Napoleon ordered Carnot to write a treatise on how fortifications could be improved for better defence. Carnot was a staunch follower of the controversial ideas of the Marquis de Montalembert (1714-1800), who criticized the traditional system of bastions and instead proposed longer walls which could be equipped with many more guns, protected by casemates. Carnot was a strong believer in the use of mortar fire ("vertical fire") and often used the terms "rain" and "storm" to denote the abundance of munitions that would come down on the attacker. "He endeavored to prove mathematically that the discharge of these mortars would in due course kill off the whole of the besieging force" (Lepage). Lazare Carnot (1753-1823) was a politician and mathematician and the most important administrator during the French Revolution, introducing mass conscription, during which he was nicknamed the "organizer of victory". With library stamp and owner's inscription. Spine worn with the edges strengthened with gold-coloured tape. Slightly browned and spotted throughout with a water stain in the lower margin, notably in the second half of the book; a fair copy.Brunet VI, col. 513; Lepage, "French fortifications, 1715-1815", pp. 143-149; Lloyd, "Vauban, Montalembert, Carnot", pp. 182-185..
