[CORMATIN, Pierre Marie Félicité Dezoteux de].
London, J. J. Stockdale, 1809. 8vo. Two volumes in one. Slightly later Portuguese diced calf, expertly rebacked, original gilt-tooled spine preserved; pp. viii, [17]-295; 244, [20, general index] (collation conforms with the one given by the National Library of Portugal); large folding map of Portugal, frontispiece to vol.II with view of the Bay of Lisbon; rubbing to extremities, foxing to map and preliminaries and frontispiece of vol.II, else a very good copy; provenance: engraved bookplate of H. Silvester inside front cover. Very rare first English edition, translated from the French (first, 1798) and updated by J. Fr. Bourgoing. The author Baron de Cormatin was a French officer and supporter of the Revolution who placed his manuscript in the library of the Duc de Chatelet, which led to confusion about the authorship. The work is a complete topography of the motherland and the Portuguese colonies on the other side of the Atlantic. Information on Portugal was much in demand in Britain, due to the Peninsular War (the decisive second battle of Porto ended with an Anglo-Portuguese victory in May 1809), trade relations and the settlement of the entire court of Lisbon in Brazil, which made Rio de Janeiro the capital of Portugal from 1808 until 1821, and opened up important trade for Britain with the largest country in Latin America. Provenance: We believe that this copy belonged to a member of the family of the naval officer Sir Philip Carteret, second baronet Silvester (1777-1828), who in 1812 was stationed in Lisbon onboard the 46-gun frigate Pomone. Text & plates (unbound) together with 16, nicely decorated, lithographed covers in four modern cloth boxes. Large folio.J.C.Hoffmannsegg, head of the botanical garden in Berlin, and H.F.Link, made around 1800 a trip to Portugal. It resulted in the description and drawing of 150 wild plants. A selection of 114 plantes was made to be included in the "Flore Portugaise". The plan was to publish the work in 28 issues with 114 engraved plates. Hoffmansegg died in 1809 and the work was discontinued. Sources say that part of the text sheets were destroyed in this period. Finally, the work was continued in 1840 by Verlag Amelang. The publication of the plates, printed in colour and finished by hand, was continued with the help of the Prussian governement. It is unknown if all the 114 plates were published. Most of the plates were drawn by J.C.Hoffmansegg, but also by the porcelain-painter G.W.Völcker. The plates were engraved by the Haas brothers, FW.Bollinger, August Clar & J.F.Krethow. Bryant, William Cullen
Printed for the Author, By E.G. House, Boston. 35,[1]pp. Printed self wrapper, bound up in late 19th century full calf, gilt, t.e.g., by Stikeman. Binding a bit rubbed and darkened at spine and extremities; internally a very good or better, partially untrimmed copy. Second edition, enlarged, of Bryant's first book. The first edition, printing the title poem only, appeared in June of 1808, attributed only "To a Youth of Thirteen," and this edition, bearing the author's name for the first time, appeared in February of 1809. Both were printed at Bryant's father's expense, and the author declined to reprint the title poem in his lifetime, partially due to an energetic assault on the character of Thomas Jefferson contained therein. The scarcity of the first edition is such that this edition has played proxy for this title in a number of notable assemblages of authors' first books. BAL 1583. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Politics]
[New York, 1809. Broadside, 12 x 7 inches. Old fold lines, lightly creased. Very minor wear and loss at some folds. Minor soiling. About very good. Broadside comparing the economic differences between the Federalist administration of a State in 1800, and its Democratic administration of 1808, based on the comptroller's reports for 1801 and 1809. The state is most likely New York. It is signed simple, "Retribution." The text pointedly compares the two administrations, saying: "When public servants have been employed on their own strong assurances of a strict adherence to economy - of disinterested zeal to serve the state - and an honest determination to correct the abuses of their immediate predecessors, it is also proper to compare their acts with those of their predecessors. In this way, the people may ascertain truly the relative merits of each. In 1800, the government of this state was virtually taken out of the hands of the federalists, and transferred by the suffrages of the people to the democrats. The statement below, made from existing laws and the Comptroller's annual reports, furnishes indisputable evidence to form a just opinion of the result." The figures of the report follow. Not in Shaw & Shoemaker. Only two copies located in OCLC, at the American Antiquarian Society and at New York Historical.

MOZART, Wolfgang Amadeus 1756-1791
Paris: Magasin de Musique [PN s566, 1-4], 1809. First Edition, first issue, with number "366" at foot of title and printed price of "48f." Fuld p. 353. Hirsch IV, 98. Not in Hoboken. RISM M4339. While Köchel (8) p. 545 cites the first edition as having been published in 1795 by Imbault, there are no known copies of this; it would thus appear to be a "ghost" (a citation for which there is no recorded copy). First performed in Vienna at the Burgtheater on May 1, 1786, with libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte after Beaumarchais. "Figaro is generally agreed to be the most perfect and least problematic of Mozart's great operas... In the great finales of Acts 2 and 4, Mozart reached a level which he could never surpass; indeed, he was hardly to equal the Bb Allegro of the second act finale for its mercurial motivic play and the subsequent Andante in 6/8 for the synchronization of dramatic revelation with the demands of musical form." Julian Ruston in Grove Opera Vol. 3, p. 634.. 2 volumes. Folio. 19th century quarter mottled calf with marbled boards, Act I: 1f. (recto title, verso blank), 1f. SALT, Henry
London William Miller 1809 - First edition. Landscape folio (80 x 57 cm.), pictorial aquatint title, 24 fine hand-coloured aquatint plates, engraved by D. Havell after Henry Salt, all without the slightest foxing, early watermarks all pre-publication, on Whatman paper ranging from 1794 to 1806. Originally bound in portrait format now re- arranged in landscape, rebacked and edged in leather retaining the original marbled boards, with a new morocco label. A remarkable example of one of the most attractive of all colour-plate books, intended by its publisher to be a continuation of the Daniells' Oriental Scenery, being uniform in size, style, and execution. The copy of the Governor of Bengal, with early watermarks, which is rare. The colouring in these early copies is distinctly superior, a more muted and subtle palette being employed. George Annesley, Viscount Valentia, left England in June 1802 on the Minerva, for a Grand Tour of the East with Henry Salt. They were antiquarians and avid collectors. Salt had earlier finished his training with the topographical draughtsman and diarist, Joseph Farrington, and Valentia appointed him to be his official artist and secretary for the tour. The plates include fine views of Chowringhee; the fort of Jaunpur; 2 aquatints of Lucknow including the mosque in the Great Imambara; the great Temple at Tanjore; Poona; the Chaitya Cave; 2 fine aquatints of Cairo; Cape Town, etc. Valentia and Salt returned to England in 1806. Salt eventually became British Consul-General in Egypt, where he died aged 47. Abbey, Travel, 515; Tooley 440. [Attributes … [Click Below for Full Description]

MORE Hannah
1809 - New Edition. 8vo., contemporary russia gilt, all edges marbled, rebacked with the original spine laid down, new endpapers. London, T.Cadell and W. Davies. A presentation copy, inscribed on the third (original) front free endpaper 'To Miss Eliza Seymour with the best wishes and kindest regards of the Author. Bailey Wood 24 August 1819 Hannah More'. Hannah More in her day was a very influential writer, whose books sold in large numbers, and had a noticeable effect on British behaviour. A deeply religious woman, a friend and helper to Wilberforce in his fight to end slavery, More attempted to reform the culture of British life from within, by her writing and personal relationships, and her campaigning for better education for the poor. This attack on the hypocrisy and moral laxity of the ruling class, first published anonymously, went through eightre-printings in the year of publication. Old ownership inscription to the second front free endpaper 'L.L.Pitt'. Some small loss to the original spine. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
