Laplace, P(ierre) S(imon) de.
Leipzig Barth, 1809. (20 x 12 cm). (12) 488 S. Mit 4 gefalteten Kupfertafeln. "The importence, for Laplace's theory, of the shortrange character of the molecular forces cannot be overstressed. Small terms involving the square of the distance were repeatedly ignored, and it is no coincidence that in his concluding remarks to the second supplement Laplace reiterated his belief in the identity of the forces at work in optical refraction, capillary action, and chemical reactions. In accordance with his belief that capillarity is a consequence of intermolecular action at a distance (albeit at a very small distance), he tried to determine the relative magnitude of the attractive force between the particles composing the liquid (F1) and the force between the particles of liquid and those of the tube (F2)." Haywood, John, editor
Nashville: Printed and Sold by Thomas G. Bradford, 1809. [4],474,[10]pp. Contemporary calf, leather spine label. Spine leather cracking, boards scuffed, corners bumped, front hinge cracked, but holding. Contemporary and slightly later ownership inscriptions in front endleaves and on titlepage. Scattered contemporary manuscript annotations. Text toned, with light foxing and faint dampstaining. Good. The third recorded Nashville imprint, popularly referred to as the first work of "book" length to issue from a Nashville press. Copies differ in terms of the number of errata; in this copy the list occupies three full pages. "...The first known bound book printed in this city...[and] justifiably a much-sought-after Tennessee rarity" - Allen. An amusing contemporary annotation in the rear endleaves of this copy, noting that, "Mr Haywood was a great man but his indexes would disgrace a school boy," point to the reason why the index was expanded from ten to seventy-six pages for the second edition of 1810. ALLEN RARITIES 16. ALLEN IMPRINTS 141. SHAW & SHOEMAKER 18744.

"Clark, born in Ireland and a schoolboy at Eton, came to New Orleans in 1786, to join his uncle of the same name. He was prominent in the city, became an American citizen, and in 1806, was elected a delegate to Congress. Shortly afterward he broke with Wilkinson, with whom he had been intimate, and in this book gives much evidence of the General's treachery." Streeter. "Clark strives to prove that Wilkinson was a pensioner of Spain from 1794 to 1803; and an accomplice of Burr in treasonably plotting a separation of the states. The case is clearly and forcibly put and is a strong one...[with] information about Jefferson's administration of the West, and the causes there working towards a secession in the early years of the republic." [Politics]
[New York, 1809. Broadside, 12 x 7 inches. Old fold lines, lightly creased. Very minor wear and loss at some folds. Minor soiling. About very good. Broadside comparing the economic differences between the Federalist administration of a State in 1800, and its Democratic administration of 1808, based on the comptroller's reports for 1801 and 1809. The state is most likely New York. It is signed simple, "Retribution." The text pointedly compares the two administrations, saying: "When public servants have been employed on their own strong assurances of a strict adherence to economy - of disinterested zeal to serve the state - and an honest determination to correct the abuses of their immediate predecessors, it is also proper to compare their acts with those of their predecessors. In this way, the people may ascertain truly the relative merits of each. In 1800, the government of this state was virtually taken out of the hands of the federalists, and transferred by the suffrages of the people to the democrats. The statement below, made from existing laws and the Comptroller's annual reports, furnishes indisputable evidence to form a just opinion of the result." The figures of the report follow. Not in Shaw & Shoemaker. Only two copies located in OCLC, at the American Antiquarian Society and at New York Historical.

LANCRET & DUTERTRE (delineavit) & BOSQ (sculpsit) & PARIS (sculpsit) & BALTARD (sculpsit)
Original, unshaved, full-page etching from the "Imperial edition" of the Description de l'Égypte, or 'Recueil des observations et recherches faites en Égypte pendant l'expédition française, publié par les ordres de Sa Majesté l'Empereur Napoléon le Grand [A Collection of the observations and research carried out in Egypt during the French expedition, published on the orders of his Majesty the Emperor Napoleon the Great]'. Produced between February 1802 and 1830 on the orders of Naopleon Bonaparte and published between 1809 and 1828, 1,000 copies were printed and distributed to institutions, on vergé paper with an 'Égypte ancienne et moderne' watermark, visible when held up to the light. Light marginal spotting not touching image, otherwise in very fresh, fine condition. An engraving from the Description de l'Egypte, one of the masterpieces of French printing and the birth of a new field: Egyptology. A gigantic survey of Egypt at the time of Bonaparte's conquests in 1798 and 1799, the work is divided into 13 volumes of engravings making up 892 plates, of which 72 colored, as well as presenting the splendors of the Egypt of the Pharaohs in 9 volumes. The other volumes discuss natural history and present a fascinating portrait of Coptic and Islamic Egypt as it was seen by Bonaparte's Eastern Armies. The 'Egyptian campaign', militarily a disaster, demonstrates, through the engravings of the Description d'Egypte, the scientific success it nonetheless became thanks to the 167 expert members of the Commission of the Sciences and Arts of the Institut d'Egypte [Egyptian Institute] … [Click Below for Full Description]
