      Tübingen: in der J. G. Cotta schen buchhandlung, 1809 Tübingen: in der J. G. Cotta schen buchhandlung, 1809. . Half leather. G+. The second page running is an historical bibliography, Literatur der Kryptographik, followed by the volume contents.- // Contemporary binding in half green vellum, with corners and paper; spine with romantic decoration framed in gilt fillet border; green marbled fore-edges; original registry. Binding damaged by rubbing on board edges and top of the joints, with tears of 5 cm. to the top of spine and a 1cm-loss of the upper spine. Body in perfect condition, with only natural spots and a small loss of paper to lower tip of p. 291.- // Proc.: Dry label Foreign Office on half binding, and glued exlibris in back frontboard Foreign Office Library ; from the personal library of the linguistics Derrick J. Langford..- // Klüber s work brings together a review of the methods for the encryption and masking of texts that had been proposed until then, and a number of new proposals both for invisible writing and for message encryption. It should be noted that among the methods of invisible writing was a proposal of one that significantly resembles (and some decades in advance) the daguerreotype photographic print(1). This copy comes together with a legitimacy of origin, signed and dated to whom it may concern , explaining that it was given to Derrick James Langford by the British Foreign Office during the time of World War II, when he and his wife, both linguists, worked alongside none other than the mathematician Alan Turing in deciphering the messages sent with the famous Enigma machine that the Nazi regime used for encoding. Klüber s work was considered during the Second World War on both sides of the trenches. When the British and American governments, before the end of the war, created a committee to go out collecting any instruments and documentation on encryption that they could find in the advance towards Berlin, they found a document in which, in addition to the cover and part of the contents of Kluber s book, there were several trials of the application of his model, which still today have not been deciphered, as the original text that served as the key is still unknown. This story can be read in a document declassified by the North-American government, available at Finally, for those interested in bibliography, Klüber s work includes one, specialized in cryptography, hieroglyphics, stenography and related tools that includes 140 editions of 97 works from before 1808. - // (1) See Nadja Lenz: The Hidden Image: Latency in Photography and Cryptography in the 19th Century , in PhotoResearcher 17 (2012): 3-13, p. 11.- // VG+ for the body, G+ only for boards."

        Videnskaben om Naturens Almindelige Love. Første Bind (alt som udkom). (The Science of the General Laws of Nature. First volume [all that was published]).

      Kjøbenhavn (Copenhagen), Fr. Brummer, 1809. 8vo. Bound in a beautiful contemporary full dark green goatskin binding with reichly gilt spine, gilt ornamental borders to boards, gilt dentelles and all edges of boards gilt. Pink end-papers. All edges gilt. Printed on good paper. Clearly a gift-copy inteded as a present from the author.Old owner's name to front free end-paper: "L. E. Jack/ 16/9 1933". A bit of wear to extremities, but en excellent, very well preserved and completely unrestored copy. XXX,378 pp. and 11 folded engraved plates, with many figures on each.. A magnificent gift-copy of the scarce first edition of Hans Christian Oersted's first printed book (The Science of the General Laws of Nature), in which he outlays for the first time the basis of his philosophical and physical system that leads him to his discovery of electro-magnetism.Universally famous for his discovery of the Electro-Magnetism in 1820, it is actually in this his first printed book that Oersted proposes at least three of the most fundamental theses that he were to follow for the rest of his life and which came to be the foundation for his discovery of Electro-Magnetism, namely: the crucial role that experiments and thereby empiricism play in the perception of nature; the fact that each individual phenomenon in nature in accordance with the philosophy of nature must be understood as a whole; and that the laws of nature are the same everywhere, in the smallest as in the greatest parts of the universe. The sort of philosophy of nature that Oersted here develops aims to "include and penetrate the entire nature, and to explain it in its full context" (from "Science of the General Laws of Nature" - own translation), which is why this philosophy is also the science of the general laws of nature (that are the same everywhere). It thus not only includes the science of movement, but also that of electricity, magnetism, light, warmth, and chemical connections, such as they all follow directly from ordinary forces of nature. The path to Oested's breakthrough discovery in 1820 of the connection between magnetism and electricity, clearly stems directly from the general laws of nature that he develops in this his earliest book. "He was an enthusiastic follower of the "Naturphilosophie" school in Germany, whose main object was the unification of physical forces, thus producing a monistic theory of the universe. It was to further this purpose that Oersted sought in actual phenomena the electro-magnetic identity of which he had already convinced himself on metaphysical grounds" (Percy H. Muir in Printing and The Mind of Man). The work is rare in itself, but it is of the utmost scarcity in this condition. Very few gift- or presentation-copies of Oersted's earliest works are known, and this is a true rarity

        Dei motivi del Codice di Commercio ovvero Discorsi pronunciati al Corpo Legislativo di Francia

      dagli Oratori del Consiglio di Stato, e del Tribunato intorno al progetto della nuova Legislazione commercilae. Traduzione italiana. Milano, Franc. Sonsogno, 1809, - iin-8, pp. (4), VIII, 326, (2), bella legatura del tempo in p. pelle marmorizz., bordura oro sui piatti, tit. e ricchi fregi oro al dorso. Il volume, che noi registriamo sotto il nome del primo degli oratori, raccoglie la traduzione italiana, fatta da un certo ''Avv. B.T.'', dei 17 ''Discorsi'' pronunciati dal 29 agosto al 15 sett. 1807 da altrettanti oratori davanti al Corpo Legislativo di Francia; in essi ognuno cerca di spiegare le difficoltà, l'utilità ed i motivi che hanno portato all'emanazione delle leggi comprese in vari titoli dei quattro libri del nuovo Codice Commerciale dell' Impero francese, voluto da Napoleone Bonaparte, progettato fin dal 1802 ed emanato in Francia nel 1807. Illustrando al corpo legislativo il Code, Regnaud de Saint Jean d'Angely pone in risalto come a questo si assegni un destino più vasto che non al Code civil e sottolinea come sia redatto secondo principi che gli danno una una rilevanza universale, principi adatti a tutte le nazioni commerciali, che abbracciano i due mondi. Esprimendo in questo modo il carattere della universalità del diritto commerciale, teso ad espandersi oltre ogni confine nazionale. Ottimo esempl. in bella rilegatura di opera veramente rara in questa traduzione italiana (restauro al margine di un foglio). Manca ai vari repertori consultati. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

      [Charleston, 1809. A fine copy. Charles B.J.F. de Saint-Mémin was a French emigree who came to America in 1793. In 1796 he began producing portraits using a physiognotrace, then transferring the image to an engraving using a pantograph. Each patron would receive the original, a series of engravings, and the original copper plate. Impressively true to life, Saint-Mémin's portraits were in great demand, and he executed some 900 of them, including many of the leading citizens of the republic, until he returned to France in 1810. This fine portrait is of William Drayton, not John Drayton as is sometimes asserted. Although the caption bears John Drayton's name, the portrait is of a very young man, probably in his early twenties, and could not possibly be the stout governor who was in his forties at the time. A lawyer, William Drayton (1776-1846) became a colonel in the War of 1812 and later a prominent Congressman from South Carolina, and was an opponent of nullification. Miles, ST.-MEMIN (Washington, 1994), 275.

        A Dictionary Persian, Hindoostanee and English;

      Calcutta: Printed at the Hindoostanee Press, by T. Hubbard,, 1809. including Synonyma. 2 volumes quarto (234 × 151 mm). Contemporary streaked calf, new red morocco labels to style, compartments formed by single gilt rules. A little rubbed, particularly at the extremities, now with some judicious restoration at the joints, corners and head- and tail-caps, light tan-burn to the endpapers, pale browning else, a very good set. First edition. Decidedly uncommon, Copac recording just 5 copies - BL, Royal Asiatic society, Oxford, Cambridge and TCD - OCLC adding just 8 more world-wide. Just two sets recorded at auction. "Gladwin was a man of wide intellectual interests - he accumulated a remarkable librar - and with a passion for learning languages and for making translations, above all from Persian. He published a large number of his translations. In 1775 he produced a specimen of a 'vocabulary' of words in various Asian languages, a project that he was later to realize in several different formats Â…[this] stream of publications making him the most frequently published author in late eighteenth-century Calcutta. Gladwin was responsible for dictionaries and vocabularies, translations of Persian histories, collections of stories and revenue accounts, treatises on medicine and rhetoric, and a Persian version of an abridgement of the biblical history Â… None of this activity is likely to have been lucrative. Gladwin confessed to spending heavily in acquiring manuscripts. Publication costs in India were notoriously high and the market was very restricted. Success depended largely on the willingness of the East India Company to purchase multiple copies" (ODNB). Armorial bookplates of Coutts Trotter to the front pastedowns. Trotter had studied experimental physics under Helmholtz and Kirchoff in Germany, but is best known for "the indubitable improvements effected the administration of Cambridge during his short academic career. 'In fact, what was sometimes called in jest "the Trotterization of the University" was so complete that he had come to be regarded as indispensable'. Besides pamphlets on university topics, he published little, though his researches were extensive".

A memoir of Latreille, with a portrait, was published in Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library for 1841.This is one of Latreille's most significant works: while Latreille praised Cuvier for having founded zoological classification on comparative anatomy, he based his own classification work primarily on the consideration of external characters. Nonetheless, as one of his successors remarked more than half a century after the appearance of the 'Genera', the work offered "such an exact exposition of the characters of the insects, arachnids, and crustaceans, and nearly always such a just appreciation of the natural affinities of these animals, that the most modern researches only added rectifications of a second order" (DSB VIII, p. 48).

      Amsterdam und Cölln, Peter Hammer (d. i.

      Jáuregui (d. 1809) was the "primer consul del Real Tribunal del Consulado" in Cuba, and it was the Consulado's "Junta de Gobierno" that ordered this report published -- although his was the minority report. At the crown's urging, such Consulados had been created throughout the Empire to aim at economic development and commercial improvement of the various regions of the New World under Spanish control, in good Enlightenment fashion.Public works and land use are traditionally fraught with concern and intransigence on the part of the various parties involved, and in the Cuban case at hand, this was certainly so; the Junta had appointed a four-member committee "para meditar los arbitrios que conceptuasen mas oportunos y menos gravosos para la formacin de caminos" ("to decide the tax rates that will be least burdensome but still will bring about the most timely creation of [good] roads"). Jáuregui's opinion was clearly and concisely expressed and shows a progressive tax structure differentiating users of the roads and the wear each category was most likely to create. => Handsomely printed on extremely good quality paper. Searches of NUC, WorldCat, COPAC, CCPB, and the OPACs of the national libraries of Mexico and Spain locate only three copies: two in the U.S. and one in Chile. One of the U.S. copies is incomplete. How many copies may be in Cuban libraries is unknown.

      Hamburg, (Hoffmann), 1781-1809. Lebendig geschriebene politische Berichte, . New York: Southwick & Pelsue 8vo (22.2 cm, 8.75"). 347, [1] pp.. 1809 First edition. Cheetham, once a friend of Paine, later turned against him, and this work reflects a great deal of bitterness and resentment: The author makes much of Paine's alleged lack of personal cleanliness. A pseudonymous "Politicus," in an attempt to encourage the writing of another life, said "Cheetham, humph! Now should it not rather be spelled Cheat'em, as applicable to every reader of that farrago of imposition and malignity, miscalled the ‘Life of Paine'?" Provenance: Pencilled note on endpaper, "From Ralph E. McCoy's Library"; McCoy, emeritus Dean of Libraries at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, published widely on the First Amendment freedoms. Later quarter plain brown paper over contemporary tan paper–covered sides; edges and corners rubbed. Front free endpaper (modern) with pencilled note of McCoy's ownership; front fly-leaf with pencilled gift inscription dated 1849. Offsetting and foxing throughout. A very sound copy.

        Walker's Tour through England and Wales. A New Pastime.

      This is an original linen-backed folding map game published in London in 1809 by William Darton.Overall 25 1/2 x 21 inches. It is an early example of the "Cartographic Game" genre that became very popular in later Victorian England. The map folds and fits into the original slipcase with printed label. The rules are printed in columns at the sides. The object of the game is to move tokens, originally in the shape of pyramids, their landing place determined by use of a teetotum (called a totum at that time) and read about the region upon which one landed. It was both competitive and educational.Early map games such as this have become very scarce. Most did not survive since they were children’s toys. This one is in remarkably good condition. There is a light stain in the lower left of the map part and general light age-toning but the colors are bright and crisp. The linen backing is sound and the folds are intact. The original slipcase has two printed paper labels.

Mai 1809 in Kraft gesetzt.

Occasional essays on various subjects, chiefly political and historical; extracted partly from the publick newspapers, during the present reign, and partly from tracts published in the reigns of Queen Elizabeth, King Charles I, King Charles II, and from Bishop Burnet's History of His Own Times.

      London: printed by Robert Wilks, ... and sold by John White, 1809. 8vo, xvi + 607 + (1)pp, complete with the half-title, contemporary mottled calf, neatly rebacked, spine gilt with a label. A very good copy inscribed in ink 'The Gift of Baron Maseres' in a contemporary hand on the front paste- down opposite a 4-line verse in the same hand (the author's?): > 'Mr Speaker I hear a Lion in the Lobby roar Say Mr Speaker, shall we shut the Door? And keep him out? Or shall we let him in to try if we can turn him out again?' First edition. Lande 624. Sabin 45417. Perhaps, more strictly, this is the first collected edition of a group of miscellaneous articles and tracts 'relating mostly to political and historical subjects and events ... which have already been printed, either in some of the Publick Newspapers, or in separate Pamphlets or larger Works, (some of which are grown scarce and difficult to be met with,) and partly, of some tracts of a more antient date ...'. Of the 41 tracts here printed, at least 27 relate to political and legal issues of the period 1760- 1809, including Wilkes, North America and Canada, the French Revolution, libel, liberty of the press, Anglo-Irish Union, the slave trade, rights to search neutral ships at sea, and political and religious toleration. Among these is An Account of the Opinions of the late Adam Smith, LL.D. Author of 'The Wealth of Nations', concerning the works of several English authors from a Letter to the Printer of the Whitehall Evening Post.> The letter (pp.177-182 in this volume) is undated but written from Glasgow. The writer declared that 'in the year 1780, I had frequent occasion to be in company with the late well-known Dr. Adam Smith. When business ended, our conversation took a literary turn; I was then young, inquisitive, and full of respect for his abilities as an author. On his part he was extremely communicative, and delivered himself, on every subject, with a freedom, and even boldness, quite opposite to the apparent reserve of his appearance'. This letter appears to have been unpublished elsewhere, but may possibly have appeared in The Bee>(?).
