[Attributes: Hard Cover]

[ENGRAVED PORTRAIT OF WILLIAM DRAYTON, OF SOUTH CAROLINA]

[Charleston, 1809. A fine copy. Charles B.J.F. de Saint-Mémin was a French emigree who came to America in 1793. In 1796 he began producing portraits using a physiognotrace, then transferring the image to an engraving using a pantograph. Each patron would receive the original, a series of engravings, and the original copper plate. Impressively true to life, Saint-Mémin's portraits were in great demand, and he executed some 900 of them, including many of the leading citizens of the republic, until he returned to France in 1810. This fine portrait is of William Drayton, not John Drayton as is sometimes asserted. Although the caption bears John Drayton's name, the portrait is of a very young man, probably in his early twenties, and could not possibly be the stout governor who was in his forties at the time. A lawyer, William Drayton (1776-1846) became a colonel in the War of 1812 and later a prominent Congressman from South Carolina, and was an opponent of nullification. Miles, ST.-MEMIN (Washington, 1994), 275.

        A Dictionary Persian, Hindoostanee and English;

Calcutta: Printed at the Hindoostanee Press, by T. Hubbard,, 1809. including Synonyma. 2 volumes quarto (234 × 151 mm). Contemporary streaked calf, new red morocco labels to style, compartments formed by single gilt rules. A little rubbed, particularly at the extremities, now with some judicious restoration at the joints, corners and head- and tail-caps, light tan-burn to the endpapers, pale browning else, a very good set. First edition. Decidedly uncommon, Copac recording just 5 copies - BL, Royal Asiatic society, Oxford, Cambridge and TCD - OCLC adding just 8 more world-wide. Just two sets recorded at auction. "Gladwin was a man of wide intellectual interests - he accumulated a remarkable librar - and with a passion for learning languages and for making translations, above all from Persian. He published a large number of his translations. In 1775 he produced a specimen of a 'vocabulary' of words in various Asian languages, a project that he was later to realize in several different formats Â…[this] stream of publications making him the most frequently published author in late eighteenth-century Calcutta. Gladwin was responsible for dictionaries and vocabularies, translations of Persian histories, collections of stories and revenue accounts, treatises on medicine and rhetoric, and a Persian version of an abridgement of the biblical history Â… None of this activity is likely to have been lucrative. Gladwin confessed to spending heavily in acquiring manuscripts. Publication costs in India were notoriously high and the market was very restricted. Success depended largely on the willingness of the East India Company to purchase multiple copies" (ODNB). Armorial bookplates of Coutts Trotter to the front pastedowns. Trotter had studied experimental physics under Helmholtz and Kirchoff in Germany, but is best known for "the indubitable improvements effected the administration of Cambridge during his short academic career. 'In fact, what was sometimes called in jest "the Trotterization of the University" was so complete that he had come to be regarded as indispensable'. Besides pamphlets on university topics, he published little, though his researches were extensive".

He returned to Wales in 1801 and afterwards issued a topographical account, North Wales (2 vols., 1804). During the same period he published one of his most popular zoological works, Animal Biography (1802), which went through multiple editions and was translated into a number of European languages. In a similar vein he published Memoirs of British Quadrupeds (1809), and Animated Nature (1814). These works gave an entertaining and palatable introduction to the basic zoological facts."-ODNB. The attractive plates were engraved chiefly by Samuel Howitt from original drawings by Bingley. Apart from the minor foxing, a fine copy. Armorial bookplate of William Mayor and another of S.J.         Genera crustaceorum et insectorum, secundum ordinem naturalem in familias disposita, iconibus exemplisque, plurimis explicata. I-IV

Paris and Strasbourg: A. Koening, 1809. Moderate foxing.. Four volumes, octavo, 12 plates and 2 folding tables; in contemporary marbled paper boards with spine labels, old shelf markers to spine. First edition. Pierre André Latreille (1762-1833) had entered the Paris Museum in 1799, and became Professor of Entomology on the death of Lamarck. He went on to publish a great number of important entomological books and articles, including several relating to other French voyages to the Pacific, and contributing the volume on insects to Cuvier's revolutionary Règne Animal of 1817. A memoir of Latreille, with a portrait, was published in Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library for 1841.This is one of Latreille's most significant works: while Latreille praised Cuvier for having founded zoological classification on comparative anatomy, he based his own classification work primarily on the consideration of external characters. Nonetheless, as one of his successors remarked more than half a century after the appearance of the 'Genera', the work offered "such an exact exposition of the characters of the insects, arachnids, and crustaceans, and nearly always such a just appreciation of the natural affinities of these animals, that the most modern researches only added rectifications of a second order" (DSB VIII, p. 48).

Faltkarten, 3 Falttabellen sowie 2 gefalt. Anzeigenblättern. Orig.-Broschuren in 3 bibliophilen Kassetten mit Marmorpapierbezug, Rückenschild und Filetenvergoldung.

Amsterdam und Cölln, Peter Hammer (d. i.

Jáuregui (d. 1809) was the "primer consul del Real Tribunal del Consulado" in Cuba, and it was the Consulado's "Junta de Gobierno" that ordered this report published -- although his was the minority report. At the crown's urging, such Consulados had been created throughout the Empire to aim at economic development and commercial improvement of the various regions of the New World under Spanish control, in good Enlightenment fashion.Public works and land use are traditionally fraught with concern and intransigence on the part of the various parties involved, and in the Cuban case at hand, this was certainly so; the Junta had appointed a four-member committee "para meditar los arbitrios que conceptuasen mas oportunos y menos gravosos para la formacin de caminos" ("to decide the tax rates that will be least burdensome but still will bring about the most timely creation of [good] roads"). Jáuregui's opinion was clearly and concisely expressed and shows a progressive tax structure differentiating users of the roads and the wear each category was most likely to create. => Handsomely printed on extremely good quality paper. Searches of NUC, WorldCat, COPAC, CCPB, and the OPACs of the national libraries of Mexico and Spain locate only three copies: two in the U.S. and one in Chile. One of the U.S. copies is incomplete. How many copies may be in Cuban libraries is unknown.

Hamburg, (Hoffmann), 1781-1809. Lebendig geschriebene politische Berichte, . – Ohne S. 1011-1026 in 1793; 1798: H. 7 u. 8; 1803: H. 11; 1804: H. 5; 1806: H. l u. 2; 1807: H. 3-6. – Diesch 1068.         The life of Thomas Paine, author of Common sense, The crisis, Rights of man, &c. &c. &c.

New York: Southwick & Pelsue 8vo (22.2 cm, 8.75"). 347, [1] pp.. 1809 First edition. Cheetham, once a friend of Paine, later turned against him, and this work reflects a great deal of bitterness and resentment: The author makes much of Paine's alleged lack of personal cleanliness. A pseudonymous "Politicus," in an attempt to encourage the writing of another life, said "Cheetham, humph! Now should it not rather be spelled Cheat'em, as applicable to every reader of that farrago of imposition and malignity, miscalled the ‘Life of Paine'?" Provenance: Pencilled note on endpaper, "From Ralph E. McCoy's Library"; McCoy, emeritus Dean of Libraries at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, published widely on the First Amendment freedoms. Later quarter plain brown paper over contemporary tan paper–covered sides; edges and corners rubbed. Front free endpaper (modern) with pencilled note of McCoy's ownership; front fly-leaf with pencilled gift inscription dated 1849. Offsetting and foxing throughout. A very sound copy.

Walker's Tour through England and Wales. A New Pastime.

This is an original linen-backed folding map game published in London in 1809 by William Darton.Overall 25 1/2 x 21 inches. It is an early example of the "Cartographic Game" genre that became very popular in later Victorian England. The map folds and fits into the original slipcase with printed label. The rules are printed in columns at the sides. The object of the game is to move tokens, originally in the shape of pyramids, their landing place determined by use of a teetotum (called a totum at that time) and read about the region upon which one landed. It was both competitive and educational.Early map games such as this have become very scarce. Most did not survive since they were children’s toys. This one is in remarkably good condition. There is a light stain in the lower left of the map part and general light age-toning but the colors are bright and crisp. The linen backing is sound and the folds are intact. The original slipcase has two printed paper labels.

Mai 1809 in Kraft gesetzt. Versand D: 2,00 EUR 8.8.4.2. Code civil 1804, Den Haag (Hagae Comitis)

Occasional essays on various subjects, chiefly political and historical; extracted partly from the publick newspapers, during the present reign, and partly from tracts published in the reigns of Queen Elizabeth, King Charles I, King Charles II, and from Bishop Burnet's History of His Own Times.

London: printed by Robert Wilks, ... and sold by John White, 1809. 8vo, xvi + 607 + (1)pp, complete with the half-title, contemporary mottled calf, neatly rebacked, spine gilt with a label. A very good copy inscribed in ink 'The Gift of Baron Maseres' in a contemporary hand on the front paste- down opposite a 4-line verse in the same hand (the author's?): > 'Mr Speaker I hear a Lion in the Lobby roar Say Mr Speaker, shall we shut the Door? And keep him out? Or shall we let him in to try if we can turn him out again?' First edition. Lande 624. Sabin 45417. Perhaps, more strictly, this is the first collected edition of a group of miscellaneous articles and tracts 'relating mostly to political and historical subjects and events ... which have already been printed, either in some of the Publick Newspapers, or in separate Pamphlets or larger Works, (some of which are grown scarce and difficult to be met with,) and partly, of some tracts of a more antient date ...'. Of the 41 tracts here printed, at least 27 relate to political and legal issues of the period 1760- 1809, including Wilkes, North America and Canada, the French Revolution, libel, liberty of the press, Anglo-Irish Union, the slave trade, rights to search neutral ships at sea, and political and religious toleration. Among these is An Account of the Opinions of the late Adam Smith, LL.D. Author of 'The Wealth of Nations', concerning the works of several English authors from a Letter to the Printer of the Whitehall Evening Post.> The letter (pp.177-182 in this volume) is undated but written from Glasgow. The writer declared that 'in the year 1780, I had frequent occasion to be in company with the late well-known Dr. Adam Smith. When business ended, our conversation took a literary turn; I was then young, inquisitive, and full of respect for his abilities as an author. On his part he was extremely communicative, and delivered himself, on every subject, with a freedom, and even boldness, quite opposite to the apparent reserve of his appearance'. This letter appears to have been unpublished elsewhere, but may possibly have appeared in The Bee>(?).

London, 1809. Contemporary calf, rebacked, preserving original spine. Bookplate on front pastedown. Titlepage tanned. Some scattered foxing, but generally clean internally. Very good. In a brown cloth slipcase. The first London "Apocrypha edition," as denoted by Elliott Coues. In response to the growing curiosity of the public regarding the findings of Lewis and Clark and the delay in publication of the "authorized account" of their expedition, this compilation of bits and pieces from already published works appeared, misleading the reader into believing it was the account sanctioned by the government and containing all the information gathered during the journey. Wheat points out that the work contains "the earliest published map with legends stemming from Lewis and Clark." Howes calls this the "counterfeit" edition, while Sabin states it contains material not published in any other edition. The map shows western North America. WAGNER-CAMP 8:2.

[Attributes: First Edition]
