The life of Thomas Paine, author of Common sense, The crisis, Rights of man, &c. &c. &c.

New York: Southwick & Pelsue 8vo (22.2 cm, 8.75"). 347, [1] pp.. 1809 First edition. Cheetham, once a friend of Paine, later turned against him, and this work reflects a great deal of bitterness and resentment: The author makes much of Paine's alleged lack of personal cleanliness. A pseudonymous "Politicus," in an attempt to encourage the writing of another life, said "Cheetham, humph! Now should it not rather be spelled Cheat'em, as applicable to every reader of that farrago of imposition and malignity, miscalled the ?Life of Paine'?" Provenance: Pencilled note on endpaper, "From Ralph E. McCoy's Library"; McCoy, emeritus Dean of Libraries at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, published widely on the First Amendment freedoms. Later quarter plain brown paper over contemporary tan paper?covered sides; edges and corners rubbed. Front free endpaper (modern) with pencilled note of McCoy's ownership; front fly-leaf with pencilled gift inscription dated 1849. Offsetting and foxing throughout. A very sound copy.

These papers begin with No1 the charge against Munro dated 20 Jan 1809: "We the undersigned officers.charge .Munro .with conduct unbecoming the character of an Officer and a Gentleman .for having in his proposal for the abolition of the tent Contract lately held by Officers Commanding Native Corps made use of false and infamous insinuations thereby tending to injure our characters as Officers, and otherwise injurious to our Reputations as Gentlemen." There are 28 officers listed as accusers including 9 commanding Lieut Colonels. [2pp].No 2 is a 30pp account of the circumstances of this case addressed to the Adjutant General by J Leith, Judge Advocate General [dated Fort St George Nov 7th 1808].       - BARBÈS Armand (1809-1870), homme politique républicain. L.A.S.

        Mosque at Lucknow

William Miller, London 1809 - Hand-colored aquatint by John Hill. Sheet size: 21 1/8 x 29 5/8 inches. The Grand Mosque of the Bada Imambara, one of the architectural wonders of India This great Mughal shrine was completed in 1784 by the Nawab of Awadh, Asaf-ud-Daula. Henry Salt, artist, traveller, diplomat and collector of antiquities, was born at Lichfield, Staffordshire, England 14 June 1780. He was destined to be a portrait-painter, and on leaving school was taught drawing by Glover, the watercolour-painter of Lichfield. In 1797 he went to London and became a pupil of Joseph Farington, R.A., and (in 1800) of John Hoppner, R.A. The turning point in his career was 3 June 1802, when Salt left London for an eastern tour with George, viscount Valentia (afterwards Lord Mountnorris), whom he accompanied as secretary and draughtsman. He visited the Cape, India, Sri Lanka, and (in 1805) Abyssinia, returning to England on 26 Oct. 1806. He made many drawings, some of which served to illustrate Lord Valentia's Voyages and Travels to India , published in 1809. The present image is from a work titled Twenty-four Views in St. Helena, the Cape, India, Ceylon, the Red Sea, Abyssinia and Egyp t, published by William Miller, with hand-coloured aquatints by D. Havell and J. Bluck from Salt's own drawings. The originals of all these drawings were retained by Lord Valentia, who also retained the ownership of the copper plates after Salt's death. The format and style of presentation of the plates is similar to Thomas and William Daniell's great work, Oriental Scenery (1795-1808), and displays great artistry by both Salt and his engravers.         Observations on the proceedings and report of the Special Medical Board,

8vo., (4) 155 (1)pp., including the half-title, the paper generally rather browned, half-title and final page (errata) soiled, with a slightly cropped ms presentation inscription on half-title ("Captain Davis with Mr. Keate's complim...."). A good copy recently bound in linen-backed marbled boards lettered. Although Thomas Keate (1745-1821) was a distinguished London surgeon, succeeding John Gunning in 1798 at Surgeon-General to the Army, and being elected F.R.S. the following year, he seems to have rubbed up the military hierarchy the wrong way. He had published in 1808 his Observations on the Fifth Report of the Commissioners of Military Enquiry, a report which had censured the medical board for showing a lack of proper control, for irregularities in awarding promotions, for making new and unnecessary appointments, for waste and extravagance, and for opening general hospitals unnecessarily. Keate had carried out his duties with success but blame had nevertheless fallen on him. The board was dissolved in 1809 and Keate was retired with a small allowance. The present Observations are in a sense a continuation of his 1808 Observations on the Fifth Report, although evidently particularly examining the inspection of the Military Hospital on the Isle of Wight and both the clinical and administrative management of the hospital by the medical superintendent, Dr. Jackson, who it seems, had made in his evidence a number of "misrepresentations and calumnies" about Keate.

London, 1809. With an Autograph Letter from DibdinDibdin, Thomas Frognall (1776-1847). The bibliomania; or, book-madness; containing some account of the history, symptoms, and cure of this fatal disease . . . iv, 87pp. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme, 1809. 214 x 124 mm. 20th century half calf, marbled boards, a few tiny scuff-marks on back cover. Light toning but very good. With an Autograph Note signed by Dibdin, dated Jan. 25, [18]41, tipped to the front pastedown, mended with clear tape. First Edition. “Dibdin’s Bibliomania, first published in 1809, is an anthem to the printed book, a warning to the unwary about the perils of obsessive book-collecting, and the confessions of a rabid book-collector” (Danckwerts, p. vii). Written in less than a month, The Bibliomania marks “the first full flowering of Dibdin’s love affair with books” (Windle and Pippin, p. 35); it had the effect of “producing much innocent mirth and exciting a general curiosity after rare and precious volumes” (Dibdin, Reminiscences of a Literary Life, p. 272). Dibdin, a clergyman and inveterate book-lover, was a lively and engaging writer whose works enjoyed great popularity and helped to stimulate enthusiasm for book collecting in the nineteenth century. The autograph note tipped into this copy reads: “Good Mr. Warren, If I had not been cheated of Ł37.10 that Monday you would have had your Ł5 with fresh boards last week. As it is please to wait until Saturday next. Always your obliged T. F. Dibdin.” Danckwerts, “Introduction,” in Dibdin, The Bibliomania (2004), pp. vii-xxxvi.       Innsbruck, 20. IX. 1809. - 3½ SS. 8vo. [Ellora, Dhumar Lena] Doomar Leyna

London: Published as the Act Directs for Thos. Daniell, Howland Street, Fitzroy Square, 1809. Aquatint by Thomas Daniell after James Wales, coloured by hand, on 'Whatman' wove paper. A stunning view of the Dhumar Lena at Ellora Mountain, a cave-temple dating to the 6th century This is one of the earliest caves of the Hindu series at Ellora and dates from the Kalachuri period in the early 6th Century, as denoted by the similarity between its columns and those at the Elephanta cave. Two sculptures of lions guard the south entrance and large-scale sculpted wall panels on the sides represent Shaivite myths. It was engraved by Thomas Daniell after the drawing by his friend, James Wales, and was included in Oriental Scenery as a sixth volume. The Daniells' Oriental Scenery is considered one of the finest illustrated works on India. Thomas Daniell and his nephew William spent nine years in India making studies, sketches and drawings of the scenery, architecture, and antiquities that graced the countryside. They then devoted a further thirteen years to publishing their remarkably accurate aquatints. In Britain, the impact was explosive. A cult of Indian architecture, landscaping and interior decoration arose, with the Royal Pavilion at Brighton as its centerpiece. The Daniells gave the English public their first accurate look at the exotic sub-continent. Their great achievement still lies in their ability to blend the picturesque with the real, resulting in images that capture the European taste for the sublime landscape, while still remaining faithful to their subjects. The Daniells brought the romance of the English landscape to the antiquities of India and provided England with an accurate vision of this wondrous country. The sixth part of Oriental Scenery is twenty-four plates based on drawings by James Wales, primarily of the excavations at Ellora. The title of this section was Hindoo Excavations in the Mountain of Ellora , near Aurungabad in Decan... The mountain contains 34 "caves" that were created to serve as monasteries and temples for Buddhists, Hindus and Jains, each religion having several spaces. The present image is of "one of the earliest of the Hindu series [of cave-temples, which] is assigned to the 6th-century Kalachuri period ... The Dhumar Lena is ingeniously cut into the hillside so as to create multple entrances, with light flowing in from three directions." ( India yesterday and today p. 198).         The Life of Admiral Lord Nelson, K.B. From His Lordship's Manuscripts.

London: Printed by T. Bensley, For T. Cadell and W. Davies, and W. Miller,, 1809. 2 volumes, quarto (338 × 272 mm). Contemporary full green straight-grained morocco, flat bands, title gilt direct to the spines, compartments with nested concentric gilt panels, wide arabesque rolled panels to the boards enclosing ruled and foliate panels in blind, dog-tooth edge-roll, all edges gilt, dog-tooth roll to turn-ins, dun endpapers. Frontispiece and 3 other plates to volume I, 7 plates to volume II, 4 of them accompanied by plans, headpieces, vignettes and facsimiles to the text, double page pedigree to volume I. Armorial bookplates of Anthony Cliffe of Bellevue, Co. Wexford to the front pastedowns, and his ownership inscription to the title page of volume I. A little rubbed at the extremities, a couple of minor scuffs to the boards, frontispiece slightly damped in the tail margin, light toning, a very good copy. First edition. "One of the main foundation stones of the Nelson legend" (Wilson, 'Nelson Apotheosised' in Cannadine (ed.), Admiral Lord Nelson), "the 'official' biography" (NMM). M'Arthur, a former naval purser, had served with Nelson in the Mediterranean and had already begun collecting material for a biography when he saw "an advertisement in the papers announcing that the Nelson family had selected a gentleman 'of high respectability and rank' to write the life, and asking all who had letters Â… in their possession not to make their material available to anyone else." McArthur came forward claiming, groundlessly, that Nelson himself had asked him to write his life, and that he had already incurred considerable expense in preparing the book, including the commissioning of a set of paintings to be engraved as illustrations. An unseemly squabble ensued, the outcome of which was fairly inevitable in that Earl Nelson was under pressure from the Prince Regent to commission his librarian and chaplain, James Stanier Clarke, to write the book. It was agreed that the authors would pool their efforts, but not before they had further fallen out over whose name should come first on the title page. That we do not refer to McArthur & Clarke is a lasting memorial to the usefulness of a powerful patron. The finished work is wonderfully illustrated with anecdotal headpieces and plates by Westall and battle-scenes by Nicholas Pocock. The subscribers list is a remarkable directory of the great and the good of Regency Britain with an inevitable emphasis on naval notables. William Beckford took a copy on vellum - one of two "one of which was burnt" - Sir Home Popham and Admiral Keats proof copies, as also Admirals Cornwallis and Anson, Earl St. Vincent and Lady Hamilton. Thomas Masterman Hardy had an ordinary copy, as did the Sandwich Book Society and Leeds Circulating Library. Highly desirable thus.

A History of New-York, From the Beginning of the World to the End of the Dutch Dynasty, Containing Among many Surprising and Curious Matters, the Unutterable Ponderings of Walter the Doubter.

New York: Inskeep & Bradford; Philadelphia: Bradford & Inskeep; Boston: Wm. M'Ilhenney; Baltimore: Coale & Thomas; and Charleston: Morford, Willington & Co., 1809. - 2 volumes.12mo., (7 ? x 4 ½ inches). (A bit browned and spotted throughout). Fine folding frontispiece of "New Amsterdam" (tape repair along crease, a bit spotted). Contemporary tree calf, the smooth spines in six compartments, red morocco gilt lettering piece in one (expertly rebacked preserving the original spines, edges slightly worn). Provenance: With ink stamp and contemporary manuscript ownership inscriptions of C. G. Strohecker, 19th-century physician. First edition, first printing. A beautifully bound copy of Washington Irving's first major work, a satirical history of New York. "It is not difficult to elicit from its pages a fair proportion of legitimate history. Indeed, it will not be saying too much, to assert that a large portion of the readers of the present day owe their knowledge of the history of New York to the interest created by this unrivaled performance" (Sabin). Prior to its publication, Irving started a hoax akin to today's viral marketing campaigns; he placed a series of missing person adverts in New York newspapers seeking information on Diedrich Knickerbocker, a crusty Dutch historian who had allegedly gone missing from his hotel in New York City. As part of the ruse, Irving placed a notice-allegedly from the hotel's proprietor-informing readers that if Mr. Knickerbocker failed to return to the hotel to pay his bill, he would publish a manuscript Knickerbocker had left behind. Unsuspecting readers followed the story of Knickerbocker and his manuscript with interest, and some New York city officials were concerned enough about the missing historian that they considered offering a reward for his safe return. Riding the wave of public interest he had created with his hoax, Irving-adopting the pseudonym of his Dutch historian-published "A History of New York" on December 6, 1809, to immediate critical and popular success. "Originally intended as a burlesque of historiography and heroic styles of epic poetry, the work became more serious as the author proceeded. Diedrich Knickerbocker, the putative narrator, begins with a mock-pedantic cosmogony and proceeds to a history of New Netherlands, often ignoring or altering facts. Descriptions of early New Amsterdam landmarks and old Dutch-American legends are included in the history, as are the discovery of America, the voyage of Henry Hudson, the founding of New Amsterdam, the 'golden reign' of Governor Wouter van Twiller, and the hostility of the British, who were based in nearby Connecticut. The book's portrait of the overeducated, belligerent governor William the Testy (Willem Kieft) is actually a Federalist satire of Thomas Jefferson. The history concludes with the rule of Peter the Headstrong (Peter Stuyvesant) and the fall of New Amsterdam to the British in 1664" (Encyclopaedia Britannica online). Howes 5260. BAL 10098.       London 1809 - With an Autograph Letter from DibdinDibdin, Thomas Frognall (1776-1847). "Dibdin’s Bibliomania, first published in 1809, is an anthem to the printed book, a warning to the unwary about the perils of obsessive book-collecting, and the confessions of a rabid book-collector" (Danckwerts, p. vii). Written in less than a month, The Bibliomania marks "the first full flowering of Dibdin’s love affair with books" (Windle and Pippin, p. 35); it had the effect of "producing much innocent mirth and exciting a general curiosity after rare and precious volumes" (Dibdin, Reminiscences of a Literary Life, p. 272). Dibdin, a clergyman and inveterate book-lover, was a lively and engaging writer whose works enjoyed great popularity and helped to stimulate enthusiasm for book collecting in the nineteenth century. The autograph note tipped into this copy reads: "Good Mr. Warren, If I had not been cheated of £37.10 that Monday you would have had your £5 with fresh boards last week. As it is please to wait until Saturday next. Always your obliged T. F. Dibdin." Danckwerts, "Introduction," in Dibdin, The Bibliomania (2004), pp. vii-xxxvi.
