CULTIVO DEL CAFETO Ó ÁRBOL QUE PRODUCE EL CAFE, Y MODO DE BENEFICIAR ESTE FRUTO...

Havana: Imprenta del Gobierno, 1809. [9],180,[6]pp., plus one engraved plate. Contemporary red morocco, gilt ruled, gilt leather spine label. Printed on light blue paper. Boards and edges slightly worn. Light foxing and dampstaining. Very good. In a morocco box. The first Spanish edition and rare Havana imprint of this technical manual on the production of coffee in Saint Domingue, originally written by P.J. Laborie and published in London in 1798. This Spanish translation was completed by Pablo Boloix, who wrote several tracts related to the Cuban and wider Caribbean economy and commerce. The manual gives detailed instructions on the establishment and operation of coffee plantations, following the example of those in Saint Domingue. It also gives a short assessment of the organization and state of the island in 1789, when the discontent that led to the Haitian Revolution was fomenting. Although coffee plants were first brought to Cuba in the mid-18th century, it was not until the dislocations caused by the rebellion in Saint Domingue forced out many colonists. The refugees, arriving in Cuba, brought better methods of production and led to the proliferation of coffee as a cash crop. Much of this manual is focused on the use of slaves in coffee production, and discusses best practices for purchasing, housing, and caring for them, as well as for maintaining authority. Very rare, we locate only four institutional copies of this imprint, at the Bancroft Library, Harvard, and the national libraries of Spain and Chile. MEDINA HABANA 250. PALAU 129004. SABIN 38431.

Memoirs of the Hon. Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of State, Vice-President, and President of the United States of America; containing a concise history of those states, from the acknowledgment of their independence.

Printed for the Purchasers, (New York) 1809 - Title page continues: " With a view of the rise and progress of French influence and French principles in that country. In two volumes." Two volumes, octavo, 21.5 cm. Bound in contemporary calf, maroon titling pieces on spines. pp [2], iv, 404, [2]; [2], (4), 434, [4]. Spines a bit darkened; some rubbing to the sides; endpapers foxed; yellowing and occasional mild foxing in text; damp stain to lower inner margins of Vol. I from endpapers through p. iv; one-third of rear free endpaper of Vol. I torn away; inner hinges cracked; VG pair otherwise, text unworn, joints not cracked, tight in the bindings. "Federalist attack, not authentic memoirs"- No. 241, p. 32, in: Shuffleton, Frank. Thomas Jefferson : a comprehensive, annotated bibliography (1983). Shaw & Shoemaker, 17154. Sabin 11004. "Venomously critical; said to have been suppressed for fear of libel suits. " - Howes C164. Laid in is an old bookseller's catalogue description which states "A considerable edition was published, but the printers became alarmed in view of the stringency of the law of libel at the time, and took advice of a leading attorney, Mr. Samuel M. Hopkins, a young lawyer, in Auburn, N.Y. Mr. Hopkins informed them that ' he found, on an average, a libel on every page.' On this the memoir was suppressed and the edition destroyed, after a few copies only had been sold." Another old catalogue description states it was copyrighted by "Thomas Hall" and "in fact was never published." The work was written and published by author, editor, drama critic, and journalist Stephen Cullen Carpenter, an ardent federalist, who accused Jefferson of being too much under the influence of the French revolutionaries. Carpenter was a pro-English Irishman who fled from trouble with the British army in 1802 or 1803, settling in Charleston, SC, and in 1806 moving his periodical the Monthly Register, Magazine, and Review of the United States to New York. While it seems likely that the book was suppressed, it can't be true that only a few copies were sold before the edition was destroyed as it is not as rare all that today. Still, a better than average copy of a fairly scarce book, a publication worthy of Breibart News. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Mémoires militaires, historiques et politiques de Rochambeau, ancien maréchal de France, et grand officier de la Légion d'Honneur.

Paris: Fain, 1809. Edition originale, 2 volumes in-8; T.I: [iv], xii, 437p. T.II: [iv], 395p. Tulard 1259. Fierro 1269. Sabin 72303.

A Review of the Cause of the New Orleans Batture and of the...

1809. Livingston, Jefferson and the New Orleans Batture Controversy Du Ponceau, Peter Stephen [1760-1844]. A Review of the Cause of the New Orleans Batture and of the Discussions that have Taken Place Respecting It; Containing Answers to the Late Publications of Messrs Thierry & Derbigny on that Subject. Philadelphia: Printed by Jane Aitken, 1809. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5-1/4"). Stab-stitched pamphlet bound into recent three-quarter calf over marbled boards using early lightly rubbed paper. Moderate toning to text, light foxing to a few leaves. A handsome copy of a scarce title. * Only edition. The Batture Controversy was one of the most important cases in American land law. It was an especially complicated case because it involved a clash between Federal law and the mixture of French and Spanish civil law practiced in New Orleans and Louisiana. A batture is a river embankment that is formed by the deposit of alluvial soil along a levee. Livingston owned a property next to the Batture St. Marie, which he claimed as part of his property. When he attempted to improve it, the people of New Orleans objected. They claimed that battures were common property because they stood beyond levee walls and were thus part of the Mississippi. They appealed their case to the federal government, and the attorney-general decided in their favor. President Jefferson, who took a personal interest in the case, influenced the attorney-general's decision. Livingston sued successfully for damages and a restoration to possession in the Federal court of New Orleans. He also brought an additional suit against Jefferson, who had recently left office. At this point Jefferson circulated a pamphlet that attacked Livingston. The present item is a response to Jefferson. Du Ponceau was a lawyer working on Livingston's case. An important figure in the early history of American law and letters, Du Ponceau was born and educated in France and trained as lawyer in Philadelphia. A leader of the Philadelphia Bar, he founded the Law Academy of Philadelphia in 1821, was President of the American Philosophical Society and was a much-consulted expert on international relations and linguistics. OCLC locates 2 copies in law libraries (Louisiana State University, US Supreme Court). Cohen, Bibliography of Early American Law 11682.
