        Voyage autour du Monde

Paris,: Courcier,, 1809.. Paris,: Courcier,, 1809.. Five volumes, octavo, and a quarto atlas; contemporary French quarter calf and papered boards, flat spines banded in gilt with double orange labels, a beautiful set. The first French commercial voyage to the Northwest coast of America, and the second French circumnavigation - some twenty-five years after Bougainville's.Returning from Bengal in 1788, Marchand had come across the voyager Portlock who told him of the lucrative fur trade between the Northwest coast and China. 'The trading firm of Baux in Marseilles underwrote a commercial expedition and purchased and fitted out the copper-sheathed ship Solide, which sailed in December 1790 for the Pacific via Cape Horn. At the Marquesas, Marchand took possession of two islands, Uapou and Nukuhiva (which he named Ile Baux), not knowing of Ingraham's visit on the Hope two months earlier... At the Northwest coast he obtained a large cargo of furs, sailed south to Hawaii, through the Marianas, and reached Macao...'This was a successful voyage but a commercial failure. Marchand was unable to sell his furs, and upon his return to France they were impounded by a revolutionary faction and eventually perished. The firm of Baux ultimately lost two-thirds of its capital in the venture...' (Forbes).Nevertheless, Marchand had proved that in times of peace, the French could compete successfully in the Pacific trade. As Marchand died in 1793, the work was actually written by Count Charles Pierre Fleurieu, himself an explorer. It includes a good account of discoveries along the American coast, from Cortes in 1537 to Malaspina in 1790, including records of Drake, Juan de Fuca, Cook, La PÈrouse, Meares, Colnett, Portlock and Dixon. Considerable text is devoted to descriptions of natural history specimens collected en route. The final volume contains a critical analysis of Roggeween's voyage, and the engraved charts include five of Alaska and the Northwest coast, four of Marquesan interest and one of Hawaii, while the China Sea chart contains important corrections. Lada-Mocarski calls it "a very important and authoritative work for the history of the Northwest coast".O'Reilly and Reitman note: 'Relation du voyage du Solide, rÈdigÈe par Claret de Fleurieu. The book was published in Paris in 1798-1800 in two forms, as four quarto volumes, the last an atlas of plates, or as six volumes, the first five the text in octavo and the sixth the same atlas as the quarto edition. In 1809 the octavo version was reissued in the form offered here, with the simple substitution of a new title-page (Forbes cites a re-issue of the quarto rather than the octavo version, perhaps in error).Hill; Lada-Mocarski, 54 (note); O'Reilly-Reitman, 618 (note); see also Dunmore, French Explorers in the Pacific, pp. 342-353, for a discussion of the voyage and its importance.

B. [Ancient Irish Histories / The Works of Spencer, Campion, Hanmer and Marleburrough]. Excerpt: ... 66 Doctor Hanmer's Chronicle Winchester, speaking of the returne of the Scots from exile (in his continuing of the Chronicle of Lanquef) maketh the same to be Anno Dom. 423 and withall delivereth his conceit, that the Scots about this time came first out of Ireland into that country, which of them was called Scotland. If he had referred it to a further yeere, namely when the sixe sonnes of Muredus King of Vlster came to Scotland, haply it would have carried some probabilitie: but to say that it was the first comming of the Scots into Scotland, I doe no more like of it, then George Buchanan11 doth, neither doth it concurre with the antiquities precedent or subsequent. Cambrensis and Stanihurst doe direct me in this course. Here I am to note, (saith Cambrensis) tltat in the time of Neall, Monarch of Ireland, the sixe sonnes of Muredus, King of leister, with no small navie, poseessed tlie North parts of Britaine, whence the nation issuing out of them, and hy speciall name called Scottish to this day, inhahite that northerne angle; but upon what occasion they came hither, /tow and by what great treasons (mther then voyagesJ they banished the Pictes from those parts, a stout nation, farre passing them for armes and courage, I referre to our Topographic of Britaine. Stanihurst addeth; this inrode into Albania was a little before the comming of Patricke. So that these Noble men of Ireland came into Scotland in the time of Neale, and h Rerum Scot. lib. 5. 1 Stan, in appendice. Patricke came into Ireland in the time of Leigerius the sonne of Neale, as hereafter more at large shall appeare. In the meane time we reade, how that (Anno 430. according to FunctiusJ Celestinus Bishop of Rome sent Palladims into Scotland, who was the first that gave them Bishops, for unto that time.. ) Includes: Richard, King of England/ Robin Hood/ Hugh Pudsy, Bishop of Durham/ King John/ Arthur/ Walter Delacy/ Lord James Audley/ Walter Burke, Earl of Ulster/ David Barry/ Ibernia/ Brennus the brother of Belinus/ Tomb of St. Patricke/ Hector/ William the Conqueror/ Patricius/ Archbishop Lanfrancus/ St. Paul's Church, London/ Ardmanagh, Dublin, Cashell and Tuam/ Gelasius, Primate of Ardmanagh/ Philip de Bruise/ Kyrneghes/ King Henry/ Lord Sleynie of Baltimore/ Lord Uggan of the great Castle/ Lord Courcy of Kilbretton/ Lord Mandevil of Barrenstelly/ Lord Roche of Pool Castle/ Lord Baron of the Guard/ Lord Arundell etc.

The Life of Admiral Lord Nelson, K.B. From His Lordship's Manuscripts

London: Printed by T. Bensley, For T. Cadell and W. Davies, and W. Miller,, 1809. London: Printed by T. Bensley, For T. Cadell and W. Davies, and W. Miller,, 1809. 2 volumes, quarto (338 × 272 mm). Contemporary full green straight-grain morocco, broad flat bands, title gilt direct to the second compartment, authors to the fourth, frigate and pinnace device to first, third, and fifth compartments within cable panel with fouled anchor corner-pieces, broad gilt rolled panel incorporating the British motifs of rose, thistle and harp enclosing a wide acanthus roll in blind to the boards, all edges gilt, zig-zag roll to turn-ins, grey-green endpapers. Frontispiece and 3 other plates to volume I, portrait frontispiece and 6 other plates to volume II, 4 of them accompanied by plans, headpieces, vignettes and facsimiles to the text, double page pedigree to volume I. Spines a little sunned, slightly rubbed on the boards, corners bumped, light toning and some off-setting from the plates, but overall a very good copy. First edition. "One of the main foundation stones of the Nelson legend" (Wilson, 'Nelson Apotheosised' in Cannadine (ed.), Admiral Lord Nelson), "the 'official' biography" (NMM). M'Arthur, a former naval purser, had served with Nelson in the Mediterranean and had already begun collecting material for a biography when he saw "an advertisement in the papers announcing that the Nelson family had selected a gentleman 'of high respectability and rank' to write the life, and asking all who had letters … in their possession not to make their material available to anyone else." McArthur came forward claiming, groundlessly, that Nelson himself had asked him to write his life, and that he had already incurred considerable expense in preparing the book, including the commissioning of a set of paintings to be engraved as illustrations. An unseemly squabble ensued, the outcome of which was fairly inevitable in that Earl Nelson was under pressure from the Prince Regent to commission his librarian and chaplain, James Stanier Clarke, to write the book. It was agreed that the authors would pool their efforts, but not before they had further fallen out over whose name should come first on the title page. That we do not refer to McArthur & Clarke is a lasting memorial to the usefulness of a powerful patron. The finished work is wonderfully illustrated with anecdotal head-pieces and plates by Westall and battle-scenes by Nicholas Pocock. The subscribers list is a remarkable directory of the great and the good of Regency Britain with an inevitable emphasis on naval notables. William Beckford took a copy on vellum - one of two "one of which was burnt" - Sir Home Popham and Admiral Keats proof copies, as also Admirals Cornwallis and Anson, Earl St. Vincent and Lady Hamilton. Thomas Masterman Hardy had an ordinary copy, as did the Sandwich Book Society and Leeds Circulating Library. Attractively bound and highly desirable thus. Book-ticket of Raoul, Comte Chandon de Briailles, eminent historian and promoter of champagne, verso of the front free endpapers.

OCLC records another printing in 16 stanzas, another that is smaller in size and has a double-rule between the columns and a version in English. All are scarce. OCLC locates 4 copies of our version (at the American Antiquarian Society, Brown University, University of Cincinnati, Pennsylvania State University). Not in McDade, who records nothing about Susanna Cox. Shaw and Shoemaker, American Imprints 18183 (giving the date "1809?").

        WILLIAM TELL; OR, SWISSERLAND DELIVERED

London: Sherwood, Neely, and Jones, 1809. First English Edition. Hardcover. Some foxing to the frontispiece with slight offsetting to the title page; contents quite clean and bright. Binding tight and firm. About Fine and quite scarce. Duodecimo (3-7/8" x 6-1/4") bound in modern quarter calf leather over marbled boards, five raised bands and gilt rules to spine, gilt lettering, marbled endpapers; xxxvi, 115, {5 advertisements] pages. First published in Paris by Didot in 1802, this is the first edition of the first English translation from the French by William B. Hewetson. Includes a Life of the Author by Jauffret. Complete with half-title page, frontispiece engraved by Mackenzie after Thomson, and 5 pages of ads at the end. According to medieval legend William Tell from Burglen was known as an expert marksman with the crossbow. In the early 1300s, the Habsburg emperors were seeking to dominate Uri. Hermann Gessler, the newly appointed Austrian Vogt of Altdorf, raised a pole in the village's central square with his hat on top and demanded that all the local townsfolk bow before it. As Tell passed by without bowing, he was arrested. He received the punishment of being forced to shoot an apple off the head of his son, Walter, or else both would be executed. Tell had been promised freedom if he shot the apple. Tell split the fruit with a single bolt from his crossbow, without mishap. When Gessler queried him about the purpose of the second bolt in his quiver, Tell answered that if he had ended up killing his son in that trial, he would have turned the crossbow on Gessler himself. Gessler became enraged at that comment and had Tell bound and brought to his ship to be taken to his castle at Küssnacht. In a storm on Lake Lucerne, Tell managed to escape. On land, he went to Küssnacht, and when Gessler arrived, Tell shot him with the crossbow. This defiance of the Austrian, Gessler, sparked a rebellion, leading to the formation of the Swiss Confederation.

A Narrative of the Campaign of the British Army in Spain,

London: Printed for Joseph Johnson, , 1809. Commanded by His Excellency Lieut.-General Sir John Moore, K.B. &c.&c.&c. Authenticated by Official Papers and Original Letters, by James Moore, Esq. The Second Edition, corrected. Quarto (270 × 210 mm). Contemporary half russia, bright orange marbled boards, flat spine, title gilt direct, compartments formed by a beaded roll, similar roll to spine and corner edges, edges "marbled" in red, marbled endpapers. Portrait frontispiece, plate of a view of the British and French positions at Corunna, folding plan, large folding general map with the "March of the British Columns," coloured. A little rubbed, spine slightly scuffed, hinges sometime tightened, light browning, some offsetting from the portrait, one leaf and the map with tears, no loss, old repairs, some consequent paste-action browning to the map, but overall a very good copy. First edition, of a work which ran to a second quarto, and three further octavo editions in the same year. Edited from Moore's papers by his brother following Sir John's death on the battlefield at Corunna. Severely wounded, having been struck "on the left breast and shoulder by a cannon shot", he lingered long enough to hear of his victory. His last words, reportedly, were, "I hope the people of England will be satisfied!" In fact, they were not, the Times remarking; "The fact must not be disguised ... that we have suffered a shameful disaster" (quoted in Hibbert, Corunna, p. 188) and this book was written to defend his memory. The first is not common, and here is offered in a pleasingly unsophisticated contemporary binding.
