4to (255 x 190mm). pp. (4), viii, 266; (4), 278, (1, errata) with 133 finely handcoloured engraved plates including the frontispiece. Contemporary green half morocco, richly gilt decorated spines, green paper covered sides with gilt border. An attractive French illustrated work on medical and useful plants. Joseph Roques born in Valence made his studies at the University of Montpellier and later moved to Paris were he soon got the reputation of an eminent botanist. The plates are meticulously hand-coloured and there are 4 plants shown on each plate. "Nous ne parlons point de Simon Pauli, de Chomel et autres compilateurs plus modernes, mais aussi peu estimés, qui, sur la foi des Anciens, ont répandu dans leurs écrits les fables les plus absurdes et les erreurs les plus dangereuses. Nous avons cru faire une chose utile, en publiant un nouveau travail sur les Plantes médicinales" (Discours préliminaire p. v). The work replaced the popular but outdated work of de Chomel.//Nissen BBI, 1674; Stafleu & Cowan 9496.

The Plantain Tree in the Island of Cracatoa.

Boydell, 1809 (1820), London: - A scene on Krakatoa, most notable for its depiction of the lush vegetation on the island. This view was done towards the end of the voyage, when Webber varied his subjects from the standardized depictions that illustrated Cook's 3rd Voyage. "More than ever now Webber recorded the botanical production of the tropics, depicting many markedly different plants in the same view. This new bent may be noted in "The Plantain Tree". and "A Fan Palm". Both drawings are remarkable for the density and plastic handling of the organic forms. These slices of exuberant nature differ from all of Webber's previous work. Particularly in "A Fan Palm" Webber heralds a new approach to landscape, in which no longer an extended view is unrolled and distance measured by natural components such as lakes, hills, rocks and mountains. In closing the background and renouncing open vistas, Webber presents us with a close-up of impenetrable thickness of stems, leaves and branches. Entangled in this luxurious natural growth, the eye confronts little spatial recession, as had been the ruling convention. Proceeding from a new interest in the depiction of exotic plants Webber breaks away from the traditional forms of landscape, in which fore-, middle- and background must play their role. In fact in drawings like "A Fan Palm" the traditional components of the eighteenth- century idea of the picturesque have become obsolete." (Joppein & Smith, "The Art of Captain Cook's Voyages", Yale UP, 1998, vol. 3 text, p150-1). The view was published in John Webber's "Views in the South Seas", which has been called "the most striking publication resulting from Cook's expeditions". (Parsons Collection 136). London. Pubd. April 1, 1809 by Boydell & Compy. No. 90 Cheapside. Vide Cook's Last Voy. Vol. III Ch. 10. Impression mark 318 x 413 mm, on paper 500 x 360 mm. Colored aquatint in very good condition with accompanying letterpress (a sml. marginal nick). The text is drawn from the published account of the voyage. Both are watermarked J. Whatman 1820.

An Essay towards the Calculus of Functions Part I and II (Babbage) in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, Volume 105, 1816 Part I pp. 1-22, 23-24 and Volume 106, Part II 179-256 WITH On the Fire-Damp of Coal Mines, and on Methods of Lighting the Mines So as to Prevent Its Explosion" (Davy) & "An Account of an Invention for Giving Light in Explosive Mixtures of Fire-Damp in Coal Mines, by Consuming the Fire-Damp"(Davy) in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, Volume 106, 1816, pp. 1-22, 23-24 WITH "On the laws which regulate the polarisation of light by reflection from transparent bodies" (Brewster) in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, Volume 105, 1815, Parts I and II, pp.

      - FIRST EDITIONS of Charles Babbage's first papers as well as his most important contribution to mathematics, the calculus of functions. "The calculus of functions is undoubtedly Babbage's major mathematical invention. The subject. was taken up by [him] almost from its origin and developed by a series of ingenious generalizations" (Dubbey, The Mathematical Work of Charles Babbage, 51). Babbage's two papers formed a complete treatise on the subject; he "took a branch of mathematics barely considered by his predecessors and transformed it into a systematic calculus (ibid, 8). Babbage became interested in the subject as early as 1809 and continued to develop it during his years at Cambridge. In these two papers, Babbage presented his major ideas on the subject and on the strength of these, was elected a fellow of the Royal Society. "Babbage believed that his new scheme would serve as a generalized calculus to include all problems capable of analytical formulation, and it is possible to see here a hint of the inspiration for his concept of the Analytical Engine. "While the work on the engines and his other scientific, social and political activities caused him virtually to abandon mathematical research at the age of thirty, the calculus of functions was not taken up by other workers, and it is the aspect of Babbage's mathematical work that modern mathematicians find the most fascinating" (Dubbey 1989, 18-19). Many years later in his Passages from the Life of a Philosopher, Babbage referred to the calculus of functions as his "earliest step" and "one to which I would willingly recur if other demands on my time permitted" (Babbage 1864, 435). ALSO INCLUDED: First edition of the first announcement and description of an invention some have argued rescued the Industrial Revolution, Humphrey Davy's Safety Lamp. ALSO INCLUDED: First edition, first presentation of 'Brewster's Angle, "one of David Brewster's most important contributions to the science of physics" (Molecular Expressions Website). CONDITION & DETAILS: Philosophical Transactions Volume for the year MDCCCXV (1815) and MDCCCXVI (1816) Ex-libris bearing only a miniscule "Athenaeum Library, Liverpool" stamp and at the foot (margin) of some of the plates. Quarto. (10.5 x 8.5 inches; 263 x 408mm). [12], 446, [20]; Volume 106 [14], 366, [12]. Bobtail the Property of the Rt. Honble. the Earl of Egremont

Edward Orme, London 1809 - Line and stipple engraving, printed in colours, by Whessell (cut to edge of plate mark, mounted onto later backing sheet). A fine example of the colour-printed racing print, painted and engraved by Whessell, print number 3 from his 'Portraits of Celebrated Running Horses' series, here re-printed by Orme Whessell issued eight plates in this series between 1806 and 1808. All eight were republished by Edward Orme in 1809. "John Whessell was both an engraver and painter of some ability. Since he engraved many of his own paintings, a superior skill in the former department may have 'improved' any faults he may have had in oils. Whessell seems to have lived in London for most of his life. Principally as an engraver, but also as a painter, Whessell must have been a successful artist during his life, of which we know so little."         [HASSELL'S DRAWING MAGAZINE OF RURAL SCENERY ...]

[London: Published by Thomas Tegg, ca. 1809-10].. Seventy parts, disbound folded signatures, comprised solely of images and captions, accompanied by aquatint caption titles for volumes one and two (without wrappers). Some occasional foxing, dusting and offsetting, a few marginal smudges, but a good lot. A partial, broken run of numbers 1 - 74, lacking numbers 14, 48, and 65. The periodical is scarce; the entry in COPAC for the holding at Oxford indicates a total of 100 numbers were published, each consisting of four or more illustrations, on four panels of a folded quarto sheet. Numbers were issued in printed wrappers, which bore the title, imprint and adverts. The illustrations often present a single view replicated in outline and aquatint, and occasionally other intermediate states, suitable for instruction. Hassell produced the majority of the illustrations, but a few are after drawings by George Morland. Most of the images depict rural activities, scenery, and/or livestock; others are floral, including a couple of instances where the aquatint is colored. Some of the plates were also utilized in variant forms of the publication. Examples of the individual parts in the original printed wrappers are rare; for example, the British Art Center at Yale has only parts 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, & 10 in wrappers. OCLC: 54272639.

Romani&#39;s expertise in French and antiquity is reflected in the libretti he wrote; the majority are based on French literature and many, such as Norma, use mythological sources. <br> This volumetric work not only details the mythology of Ancient Greece and Rome but all know cultures in the world at the time between 1809-1825, spanning all continents from Okee from North American Powhatan lore to the lore of the First Emperor of China to Mitra. <br><br> This is an oversized or heavy book that requires additional postage for international delivery outside of Canada and the US.

The first paper, which marks the foundation of experimental pharmacology, describes the effects on the spinal cord of the Javanese plant &#147;upas tieute&#148; (of the strychnos group); the third examines the absorption of poisons in mammals. They represent the first records of attempts to administer chemical substances to living organisms in a systematic way so that the effects of similar chemical agents from different sources may be compared. Magendie reprinted the &#147;Mémoire sur les organs de l&#146;absorption&#148; in the first volume of his Journal de physiologie expérimentale (1821), noting that he had found nothing to alter in it even after the passage of eleven years since its first publication. The second paper is Magendie&#146;s memoir on the loss of water from the lungs. "Pinel was among the first to treat the insane humanely; he dispensed with chains and placed his patients under the care of specially selected physicians. Garrison considered the above book one of the foremost medical classics, giving as it did a great impetus to the humanitarian treatment of the insane." (GARRISON & MORTON, 4922). Pinel founded the french school of psychiatry. The second french edition is very substantially enlarged by Pinel. NICE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST.

An Original and Authentic Journal of Occurrences during the Late American War, from its Commencement to the Year 1783.

Dublin: Wilkinson & Courtney, 1809 - Octavo (209 × 130 mm) Contemporary half calf, marbled boards, title gilt direct to spine, compartments formed of double rules. Bookplate of George Hastings Cox, a prominent collector of Canadiana, to the front pastedown. Somewhat rubbed, upper joint just starting toward the tail, spine creased, title page soiled, light browning, else a very good copy. Letter-press order of battle. First edition. "Originally published in eleven parts" (Sabin). Lamb enlisted in the 9th regiment of foot in 1773; three years later he embarked for Canada and served initially in the operations at the siege of Quebec. Subsequently he "joined in General John Burgoyne's successful operations against Fort Ticonderoga, and was with the British army as it pursued the fleeing rebels southward to Fort Anne" (ODNB). Captured at Saratoga, he was held as a prisoner near Boston for a year, then escaped and made it to the British lines at New York. Lamb there joined the 23rd, or Royal Welch Fusiliers, and served throughout the southern campaigns until Yorktown, where he again entered captivity, and yet again escaped and made his way to New York; "He returned to England with the 23rd regiment on 5 December 1783 and was mustered out of the army a year later when peace was declared in Europe." On his return to Ireland he became a schoolmaster at the free school in White Friar's Lane, Dublin, where he remained for the rest of his life. "He undertook this work because he had seen no 'impartial detail of the more minute, but no less important occurrences of the war, which, as secret springs, actuated the public movements, and which were never any further disclosed to the world, but as comprised in the general result'" (Sabin). He was a keen observer and a careful writer, and his account is considered one of the best sources for the genuine experience of the soldiery in the war. Graves, who, like Lamb, served in the Royal Welch Fusiliers, fictionalized Lamb's services in two wartime novels, Sergeant Lamb of the Ninth (1940) and Proceed, Sergeant Lamb (1941).         La Pie Grieche Grise

      - A detailed hand colored lithograph by Edouard Travies (1809-1865) from his sweeping series 'Les Oiseaux Les Plus Remarquables.', which was published in Paris & London: Berrieux and Gambert, Junin & Co, [circa 1857]. and printed by Lemercier of Paris. Overall this print measures 21 1/8 x 14 5/8 inches. The work of Edouard Travies represents a pinnacle in French ornithological illustration, and his original work is exceedingly rare. Natural history, as a descriptive pursuit bent on identifying new species, demanded detailed illustrations, and the minute precision of Travies's work places him with the best of France's scientific artists. As is evident in these watercolors, his attention to esthetic qualities was no less perceptive. Travies's images of birds are considered to be some of the finest ever produced. His illustrations describe the species of birds native to Central and South America, and all show the birds in association with flowering plants indigenous to their habitats, such as orchids and passion flowers. Overall this print is in very good condition with some foxing/staining and evidence of previous binding on left margin, and a tear/repair to left margin
