[Weimar], 14. XII. 1809. - Theaterzettel.

Bobtail the Property of the Rt. Honble. the Earl of Egremont

Edward Orme, London 1809 - Line and stipple engraving, printed in colours, by Whessell (cut to edge of plate mark, mounted onto later backing sheet). A fine example of the colour-printed racing print, painted and engraved by Whessell, print number 3 from his 'Portraits of Celebrated Running Horses' series, here re-printed by Orme Whessell issued eight plates in this series between 1806 and 1808. All eight were republished by Edward Orme in 1809. "John Whessell was both an engraver and painter of some ability. Since he engraved many of his own paintings, a superior skill in the former department may have 'improved' any faults he may have had in oils. Whessell seems to have lived in London for most of his life. Principally as an engraver, but also as a painter, Whessell must have been a successful artist during his life, of which we know so little."       [London: Published by Thomas Tegg, ca. 1809-10].. Seventy parts, disbound folded signatures, comprised solely of images and captions, accompanied by aquatint caption titles for volumes one and two (without wrappers). Some occasional foxing, dusting and offsetting, a few marginal smudges, but a good lot. A partial, broken run of numbers 1 - 74, lacking numbers 14, 48, and 65. The periodical is scarce; the entry in COPAC for the holding at Oxford indicates a total of 100 numbers were published, each consisting of four or more illustrations, on four panels of a folded quarto sheet. Numbers were issued in printed wrappers, which bore the title, imprint and adverts. The illustrations often present a single view replicated in outline and aquatint, and occasionally other intermediate states, suitable for instruction. Hassell produced the majority of the illustrations, but a few are after drawings by George Morland. Most of the images depict rural activities, scenery, and/or livestock; others are floral, including a couple of instances where the aquatint is colored. Some of the plates were also utilized in variant forms of the publication. Examples of the individual parts in the original printed wrappers are rare; for example, the British Art Center at Yale has only parts 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, & 10 in wrappers. OCLC: 54272639.

At the University of Genoa he translated French literature and, with a colleague, prepared a six-volume dictionary of mythology and antiquities, including the history of the Celts in Italy. Romani&#39;s expertise in French and antiquity is reflected in the libretti he wrote; the majority are based on French literature and many, such as Norma, use mythological sources. <br> This volumetric work not only details the mythology of Ancient Greece and Rome but all know cultures in the world at the time between 1809-1825, spanning all continents from Okee from North American Powhatan lore to the lore of the First Emperor of China to Mitra. <br><br> This is an oversized or heavy book that requires additional postage for international delivery outside of Canada and the US.

Offprint from Bulletin du Société philomathique 2 (1811). 3-20pp. (3) Mémoire sur les organs de l&#146;absorption chez les mammifères. Offprint from Bulletin du Société philomathique (1809). 16pp. Together 3 works in 1, 8vo. 204 x 125 mm. Quarter morocco, marbled boards in period style. Light toning, otherwise fine. First Separate Editions. Extremely rare offprints of some of Magendie&#146;s first experimental papers. The first paper, which marks the foundation of experimental pharmacology, describes the effects on the spinal cord of the Javanese plant "upas tieute" (of the strychnos group); the third examines the absorption of poisons in mammals. They represent the first records of attempts to administer chemical substances to living organisms in a systematic way so that the effects of similar chemical agents from different sources may be compared. Magendie reprinted the "Mémoire sur les organs de l&#146;absorption" in the first volume of his Journal de physiologie expérimentale (1821), noting that he had found nothing to alter in it even after the passage of eleven years since its first publication. The second paper is Magendie&#146;s memoir on the loss of water from the lungs. Olmsted, Magendie, pp. 35-47; he does not cite these offprints in his bibliography, and notes only the 1821 reprint of the "Mémoire." [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Binding tight; boards lightly rubbed; corners bumped; internally in very fine condition. Borba 374. Quoting the Advertisement: As the recent political changes in Europe have naturally attracted the general attention towards the New World, no apology, it is presumed, can be deemed necessary for presenting to the public the following succinct account of one of the most interesting colonies in that quarter of the globe. The jealous and illiberal policy which at all times characterized the government of Brazil, in its intercourse with foreigners, have hitherto rendered it difficult to obtain accurate information respecting the productions, trade, and commerce of this colony. The author therefore trusts that the information contained in the following sheets cannot fail to prove acceptable to the general reader, and highly interesting to every one engaged in commercial speculations. "Pinel was among the first to treat the insane humanely; he dispensed with chains and placed his patients under the care of specially selected physicians. Garrison considered the above book one of the foremost medical classics, giving as it did a great impetus to the humanitarian treatment of the insane." (GARRISON & MORTON, 4922). Pinel founded the french school of psychiatry. The second french edition is very substantially enlarged by Pinel. Cerne de mouillure claire aux faux-titre, titre et premier feuillet de la préface, le tout sans gravité, sinon exemplaire en BEL ETAT, dans sa solide reliure de l'époque. NICE COPY.         An Original and Authentic Journal of Occurrences during the Late American War, from its Commencement to the Year 1783.

Dublin: Wilkinson & Courtney, 1809 - Octavo (209 × 130 mm) Contemporary half calf, marbled boards, title gilt direct to spine, compartments formed of double rules. Bookplate of George Hastings Cox, a prominent collector of Canadiana, to the front pastedown. Somewhat rubbed, upper joint just starting toward the tail, spine creased, title page soiled, light browning, else a very good copy. Letter-press order of battle. First edition. "Originally published in eleven parts" (Sabin). Lamb enlisted in the 9th regiment of foot in 1773; three years later he embarked for Canada and served initially in the operations at the siege of Quebec. Subsequently he "joined in General John Burgoyne's successful operations against Fort Ticonderoga, and was with the British army as it pursued the fleeing rebels southward to Fort Anne" (ODNB). Captured at Saratoga, he was held as a prisoner near Boston for a year, then escaped and made it to the British lines at New York. Lamb there joined the 23rd, or Royal Welch Fusiliers, and served throughout the southern campaigns until Yorktown, where he again entered captivity, and yet again escaped and made his way to New York; "He returned to England with the 23rd regiment on 5 December 1783 and was mustered out of the army a year later when peace was declared in Europe." On his return to Ireland he became a schoolmaster at the free school in White Friar's Lane, Dublin, where he remained for the rest of his life. "He undertook this work because he had seen no 'impartial detail of the more minute, but no less important occurrences of the war, which, as secret springs, actuated the public movements, and which were never any further disclosed to the world, but as comprised in the general result'" (Sabin). He was a keen observer and a careful writer, and his account is considered one of the best sources for the genuine experience of the soldiery in the war. Graves, who, like Lamb, served in the Royal Welch Fusiliers, fictionalized Lamb's services in two wartime novels, Sergeant Lamb of the Ninth (1940) and Proceed, Sergeant Lamb (1941).         L'Effraie ou la Fressaie

      - A detailed hand colored lithograph by Edouard Travies (1809-1865) from his sweeping series 'Les Oiseaux Les Plus Remarquables.', which was published in Paris & London: Berrieux and Gambert, Junin & Co, [circa 1857]. and printed by Lemercier of Paris. Overall this print measures 21 1/8 x 14 5/8 inches. The work of Edouard Travies represents a pinnacle in French ornithological illustration, and his original work is exceedingly rare. Natural history, as a descriptive pursuit bent on identifying new species, demanded detailed illustrations, and the minute precision of Travies's work places him with the best of France's scientific artists. As is evident in these watercolors, his attention to esthetic qualities was no less perceptive. Travies's images of birds are considered to be some of the finest ever produced. His illustrations describe the species of birds native to Central and South America, and all show the birds in association with flowering plants indigenous to their habitats, such as orchids and passion flowers. Overall this print is in very good condition with some foxing/staining and evidence of previous binding on left margin.

(cgc) Author's Presentation Copy. With a one page signed ms. letter laid in, from the author to his publisher; Sirs. Give Mr. (Hu?and) a large paper copy of my book and his choice of proof prints. J. Barrington. . Provenance: In faint pencil on the bottom margin of the above letter: Purchased by me at Hatairds (?), John Hare. The printer colophon is on the bottom edge of the first text page. National Library Ireland online catalogue cites 1 copy. There is only 1 complete copy (of 6 listings) on WorldCat, at University Kansas Libraries. "Originally announced to be in 10 parts but apparently suppressed after 5 parts (see below) were published. A new edition was issued in London, by Henry Coburn & R. Bentley. 1835, in 2 vols, 4to, with 36 portrait plates. Presumably from parts left over from the first edition. Sir Jonah Barrington, (1760-1834), Irish politician, was appointed an Admiralty Court Judge in 1798. This is an important book for the era covering the subjects of the 1798 Rebellion, The Volunteers and The Union. Barrington's character was called into question but he also on occasions acted with principal. He campaigned against the Union and lost his position when he voted against it. He had helped the government get votes in its favour by bribery. When he lost his seat in 1803 the government made him a judge. The first part of the present work was published in 1809 causing great alarm because of its uncompromising content and style. It is thought he was induced to delay later parts as the government shrank from exposure of its conduct in carrying out the Act of Union. Financial irregularities forced his removal from the bench but the threat of these memories apparently meant that he was allowed to reside in France from 1815 and act as a judge by deputy until 1830. Contrary to some biographical sources, despite similarities, this is not the same work as his Rise and Fall of the Irish Nation. "Barrington could have been Solicitor-General if he had agreed to vote for the Union. He gives himself and perhaps deserves great credit for this renunciation, but his political manoeuvres of the period of 1801-2 were far from simple. Between 1805 and 1810 his debts led him to misappropriate court funds and he was finally brought to account for this in 1830. . All his books are valuable documents for the social and political life of 18th century Ireland. He has been much frowned on by puritan critics but he was simply a politician of his time whose chief fault was to be found out. It is absurd to condemn him for not sharing the high standards of modern Irish political life". - Brady & Cleeve. The broad collection of portraitures were engraved by James Heath and include Barrington, Edward Fitzgerald, Francis Rawdon, Henry Grattan, Henry Flood, Charles Cornwallis, and others involved in the machinations over Irish Legislative Union.         The Life of Admiral Lord Nelson, K.B. From His Lordship&#39;s Manuscripts

London, Printed by T. Bensley, For T. Cadell and W. Davies, and W. Miller, , 1809 . 2 volumes, quarto (340 × 270 mm). Contemporary calf, rebacked with the original spines laid down, raised bands, wavy rolled tooling to the bands, gilt lozenges to the compartments, blind palmette roll to the boards within French fillet gilt panels, gilt corner pieces, edges marbled, marbled endpapers. Frontispiece and 3 other plates to vol. I, 7 plates to vol. II, 4 of them accompanied by plans, headpieces, vignettes and facsimiles to the text, double page pedigree to vol. I. Contemporary bookplate of John Lind, physician to Haslar Naval Hospital, a position in which he had succeeded his father, author of A Treatise of the Scurvy; later bookplate of Lieutenant Commander Geoffrey Gowlland of the School of Naval Co-operation, Lee-on -Solent, letter loosely inserted records the book&#39;s presentation to him in 1935 as the Henry Leigh Carslake Prize. A little rubbed at the extremities, rebacked with the original spines quite neatly laid down, slight tape mark to the front endpaper of vol. I, some light browning, but overall a very good copy. First edition. "One of the main foundation stones of the Nelson legend" (Wilson, "Nelson Apotheosised" in Cannadine (ed.), Admiral Lord Nelson). McArthur, a former naval purser, had served with Nelson in the Mediterranean and had already begun collecting material for a biography when he saw "an advertisement in the papers announcing that the Nelson family had selected a gentleman &#39;of high respectability and rank&#39; to write the life, and asking all who had letters &#133; in their possession not to make their material available to anyone else." McArthur came forward claiming, groundlessly, that Nelson himself had asked him to write his life, and that he had already incurred considerable expense in preparing the book, including the commissioning of a set of paintings to be engraved as illustrations. An unseemly squabble ensued, the outcome of which was fairly inevitable in that Earl Nelson was under pressure from the Prince Regent to commission his librarian and chaplain, James Stanier Clarke, to write the book. It was agreed that the authors would pool their efforts, but not before they had further fallen out over whose name should come first on the title page. That we do not refer to McArthur & Clarke is a lasting memorial to the usefulness of a powerful patron. The finished work is wonderfully illustrated with anecdotal headpieces and plates by Westall and battle-scenes by Nicholas Pocock. The subscribers list is a remarkable directory of the great and the good of Regency Britain with an inevitable emphasis on naval notables. William Beckford took the only copy on vellum, Sir Home Popham and Admiral Keats proof copies, as also Admirals Cornwallis and Anson, Earl St Vincent and Lady Hamilton. Thomas Masterman Hardy had an ordinary copy, as did the Sandwich Book Society and Leeds Circulating Library. A sound, solid and not unattractive copy of this important work.
