the Rev. Daniel Lysons and Samuel Lysons
London - T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1808 Book. VERY GOOD INDEED. Hardcover. First edition.. A first edition of this topographical guide to Cambridgeshire from Daniel and Samuel Lysons. Volume II, Part I. Illustrated throughout with thirty-three plates (collated, complete), including a coloured plate and a double-page map of the county. Magna Britannia, being a concise topographical account of the several counties of Great Britain (to give its full title) was an ambitious topographical and historical survey published by the antiquarians Daniel Lysons and his brother Samuel Lysons in several volumes between 1806 and 1822. It covers the counties of Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Cheshire, Cornwall, Cumberland, Derbyshire, and Devon. The work was curtailed in 1819 on Samuel Lysons' death. Unlike other similar works published in the 17th and 18th centuries, Magna Britannia remains of value today because the Lysons brothers included content on topics such as population, manufacture and commerce. They were also far less preoccupied than many antiquarians with coats of arms and pedigrees, and did not overstate the grandeur of the counties, as local topographers were apt to do. One volumes of ten only (the complete set can fetch up to 4,500). Bookplate of William Smith Hesleden to the front pastedown. Condition: Rebacked in calf with original tree calf boards preserved. Externally, generally smart, though with some rubbing, wear to the extremitiesand marks to the original boards. Internally, firmly bound. COVENTRY, Andrew
Edinburgh: Archibald Constable & Co., and John Murray, London. 1808. 8vo., (4) + 188pp., original boards with paper spine label lettered in ink, the spine generally rather worn, but a very good sound and crisp copy, entirely uncut. A presentation copy with a partially erased inscription in ink on verso of title, signed by the author.> First edition. Rothamsted p.41. Perkins 410. Goldsmiths 19590. See also Fussell, II, p.76. Dr. Andrew Coventry was the first professor of agriculture at Edinburgh University (1790-1831) and frequently arbitrated on land questions. Although a medical doctor by training Andrew Coventry had inherited an estate of Shanwell, near Kinross, and other property in Perthshire, and he came to be regarded as the main authority on agriculture in Scotland. 'Although it was not possible to graduate with a degree in agriculture, Coventry had attracted classes varying in number from 30 to 78. Towards the end of his tenure of office, however, he appears to have lectured only in alternate years. In 1830 the royal commission recommended that the chair of agriculture should be abolished, unless the subject could be taught regularly. Coventry therefore resigned'. [Ernest Clarke rev. Anne Pimlott Baker in ODNB].

ESCHER (Samuel Hartmann d').
Montpellier, (s.n.), 1808. M.Y. Ridenbaugh, biographe de McDowel, écrivit : ¿Nothing favorable to ovariotomy was published in France, excepting the thesis by Samuel Hartman d'Escher, in 1808, up to the year 1844¿. » Ricci, One hundred years of gynaecology, pp. 56-57 : "The first … [Click Below for Full Description]
