HILL, J. after Philippe Jacques LOUTHERBOURG
London: Published by I. & W. Macgavin, No. 107 New Bond Street, 1808. Coloured aquatint. Printed on wove paper. In excellent condition with the exception of a small brown mark in the lower left corner of plate. Slight creasing through center of image. Image size: 13 1/2 x 20 inches. A pretty view of Ramsgate Pier, from Philippe Loutherbourg's great work "Picturesque Scenery of Great Britain." This impressive aquatint is plate two of Phillip Jacques Loutherbourg's seminal work "Picturesque Scenery of Great Britain." This accomplished text is comprised of six large aquatint views engraved after Loutherbourg's acclaimed paintings. The work, which was first engraved in 1801 by J. C. Stadler, was later re-engraved in 1808 by J. Hill. Reminiscent of Rowlandson's superb paintings, this image depicts the stormy docks of Ramsgate pier. While a group of hardy sailors converse at ease, a party of three figures are battered by the fierce winds that beat the shoreline. The son of a court painter in Darmstadt, the versatile artist Philippe Jacques Loutherbourg was born in Fulda, Germany and was a pupil of J. H. Tischbein and Carle Vanloo and Francis Casanova the elder in Paris. His romantic landscapes, battle scenes, portraits, and biblical subjects were highly esteemed and lauded by influential colleagues such as Diderot. He frequently exhibited at the Salon and became a venerated member of the Académie Royale in 1767. In 1771, he moved to England, where he was employed as the principal scenery designer at London's Drury Lane Theatre. His creative and minutely detailed se … [Click Below for Full Description]

CAGNAZZI de Samuele Luca
CAGNAZZI de Samuele Luca. Elementi dell'arte statistica. Parte prima e seconda. Napoli, nella Stamperia Flautina, 1808-1809. In 8vo; pp.XXIV,224; VIII,336. Due tavole spieghevoli. Legatura coeva in mezza pelle, titolo e fregi in oro al dorso. Edizione originale rara. Luca de Samuele Cagnazzi (Altamura, 28 ottobre 1764-Napoli, 26 settembre 1852). Einaudi I, 775.

London: John Stockdale, 1808 - Large engraved map, hand-coloured in outline (opens to 975 × 1287 mm), dissected into 32 panels and laid down on linen, housed in the original grey-blue pasteboard slipcase with letterpress label (250 x 165 mm). The map lightly browned and with a couple of small pale stains, the case slightly rubbed but overall very good. Uncommon, large 1:1,000,000 scale Peninsular War-period map. Copac shows only 3 locations, BL, NLS, and Oxford, OCLC adds just Yale. Timely first English edition of a map first published Paris, 1799. It is widely recorded that in the early part of the campaign obtaining accurate maps was a major problem for Wellington. Richard Fletcher, appointed commanding Royal Engineer in the Peninsula in 1809, specifically requested a copy of the Mentelle map when embarking to take up his post (Thomson, Wellington's Engineers: Military Engineering on the Peninsular War 1808-1814, p.34). However, it was recognised that many of the available maps were cobbled together from often unreliable sources, and Fletcher's RE officers were extremely active in the early years of the campaign "surveying all the major routes between Portugal and Spain, and travelling with Moore's army" (Thomson, p.219). And while the Engineers contributed "in an ad hoc" way to knowledge of the theatre, officers attached to the Quarter Master-General's Department and the Royal Staff Corps "did the bulk of the mapping" (p.220), a prominent name among the former being Thomas Livingston Mitchell, who carried out the painstaking post-war surveys that went into Wyld's superb … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Fourier, Charles].
1808. 8vo. (4), 425, (3) pp. With large folding table "Tableau du cours du mouvement social". Slightly later calf-backed marbled boards, flat back lettered in gilt, edges marbled to match boards. First edition of the author's first book, containing the essence of his principle of Association (or the union between men), driven by universal human passionate attraction but hampered by the forces of civilization. According to Fourier, an important precursor to Marx, social harmony can only be based upon this principle, and he was convinced that material abundance would be its result. The application of this principle by his followers in various utopian communes was little successful, but the impact of Fourier's profound insight into human nature and civilization on social and socialist theory can hardly be underestimated. While Marx and Engels severely criticized Fourier's thought as unhistorical, they praised him for his attacks on 19th century moralism as "impuissance en action". - First and last leaves mildly duststained; marginal edge flaws to last and another leaf without affecting text. Del Bo p. 5. Kress B. 5351. Goldsmiths' 19750 (2 copies). Not in Einaudi. En français dans le texte 218.
