MAITLAND, James, eighth Earl of Lauderdale.
Paris: Dentu, 1808 - Octavo. Original pale blue paper wrappers, white paper label printed in black to backstrip. Backstrip a little cracked but still holding firm, tiny loss to bottom margin of half-title and bottom corner of a couple of leaves, corners dog-eared but overall contents bright and crisp. An excellent copy. First edition in French, published four years after the first edition in English. Lauderdale "has been hailed as a forerunner of Keynes, in as much as he argued that over-saving was a distinct possibility and that public spending was required to offset private thrift if stagnation was to be asserted" (Blaug). In the present work Lauderdale questioned Adam Smith's theory of the relationship between labour and value, maintaining that wealth was a compound of labour, land, and capital, and value was a compound of utility and scarcity. He argued that capital was capable of harnessing productive labour to make profits by meeting market demand, and that such profits resulted only when there were no legislative restraints on commerce and no burdens, such as Pitt's sinking fund to redeem the national debt. "Lauderdale's importance in the history of economics lies, not in his conclusions, but in the fact that he was the first in England to consider systematically the fundamental conceptions on which the science is based. In this respect alone he is in advance of Adam Smith" (Palgrave II, p. 574). Goldsmiths' 19568; McCulloch, pp. 15-16.

[Ferdinand VII, King of Spain]
[Madrid, 1808. Small sheet, folded into a square, 3 3/4 x 3 3/4 inches. A few small worm holes, one larger at bottom left corner not affecting seal. Top portion of seal text obscured by residual wax. Good. Paper seal intended for use on Spanish government documents and letters by the King Ferdinand VII in 1808. This seal must date from the short period that Ferdinand was king in 1808, from March to May. His predecessor Charles IV had abdicated after a popular uprising, and Napoléon forced Ferdinand to stand down after only two months. Ferdinand was kept prisoner in France until 1813, when he was eventually restored to the throne. He then ruled until 1833, during which time Spain lost most of its overseas colonial territories to local revolution.

Legendre, A(drien)-M(arie).
Paris Courcier 1808 - (26 x 20 cm). XXI (statt XXIII) 480 (34) S. Halblederband der Zeit. "Legendre's 'Essai' contains an improved exposition of his law of the reciprocity of quadratic residues, his principal contribution to number theory, which he first demonstrated imperfectly in his 'Recherches d'analyse indéterminée'. In 1801, Gauss claimed priority for the discovery of this law, for which he had provided the first rigorous demonstration; Legendre, while maintaining his expositions of 1785 and 1798, adopted Gauss's proof in the second edition of the 'Essai' (1808). The 'Essai' also introduced the symbol (a/p), still used to express the law of reciprocity; and gave an outline of Legendre's law of the distribution of prime numbers, which he improved in the second edition" (Norman). - Titel mit Besitzvermerk von alter Hand. Stellenweise etwas stockfleckig. Ohne Schmutztitel und die beiden Supplemente. Einband berieben und bestoßen. Rücken und Ecken erneuert, sonst innen gut erhalten. - DSB 8, 135; vgl.
