Lewis, Matthew Gregory
Printed by D. N. Shury, 7, Berwick Street, for Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, Paternoster-Row, London. 12mo, four volumes: pp. [i-vii] viii-xxiii [xxiv] [1-3] 4-307 [308: blank]; [i-iv] [1-3] 4-335 [336: blank]; [i-iv] [1-3] 4-276; [i-iv] [1-3] 4-325 [326: blank], rebound in full brown calf, t.e.g., marbled endpapers. First edition. Lewis's Gothic sampler, interspersed with nightmare and graveyard verse, "contains examples of oriental, Germanic, medieval, and monastic Gothicism in both the terrific and horrific modes. Robert D. Spector observes that although these tales are pure Gothic, Lewis 'had toned down the ghastly, supernatural elements which had made THE MONK a sensational, although infamous, success.' Yet, Lewis's fondness for an ugly macabre as well as a sadistic supernatural is still very clearly in evidence. In fact, Poe's title, 'Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque,' could serve as a title for the Gothic variety of Lewis's collection. As may be judged from the modern reprintings of several stories, each of the prose tales is long enough to qualify as a Gothic novella. In their order, the tales are: MISTRUST: OR, BLANCH AND OSBRIGHT, A FEUDAL ROMANCE (medieval Gothic adapted from a drama by von Kleist, THE FAMILY OF SCHROFFENSTEIN); THE ANACONDA (an East Indian story using the natural horror associated with a serpent); THE FOUR FACARDINS (a Gothic Marchen with touches of the Schauerromantik); MY UNCLE'S GARRET WINDOW (domestic or neighborhood Gothic whose theme bears comparison with Hawthorne's story of connubial espionage, 'Wakefield'); AMORASSAN: OR, THE SPIR … [Click Below for Full Description]

ACKERMANN, Rudolph.
London R. Ackermann -1810. Three volumes, 4to., 3 engraved title pages, 3 engraved dedication leaves, 104 finely hand-coloured aquatint plates after Rowlandson and Pugin, contemporary russia, covers with broad gilt borders, neatly rebacked to style, all edges gilt, a handsome set. The Microcosm was the first major colour plate book published by the celebrated nineteenth century publisher, Rudolph Ackermann (1764-1834). It originally appeared in monthly parts, usually by subscription, between 1808 and 1810. Each issue cost seven shillings and included four coloured plates. It later appeared in its final bound folio format of three volumes, each containing over thirty full-page hand-coloured aquatints depicting London's principal buildings in the nineteenth century. The Microcosm was a new undertaking in that it treated Regency London pictorially, and ranged over new and ancient buildings and meeting places, capturing the mood of London at the time. Life in London during the Regency era was distinctive for its architecture, literature, fashions, and politics. Socially, it was a combination of two extremes, with extravagance and opulence for the aristocracy with their affluent buildings to the overcrowded slums and poverty endured by the poor. It was an era of economic uncertainty caused by the Napoleonic Wars, and social unrest due to the Industrial Revolution and its introduction of machine-based labour over manual labour. The three volumes are laid out in the form of a dictionary, with the buildings listed alphabetically for ease of reference. From the introduction, Ackerma … [Click Below for Full Description]

JOSEPH G. TOTTEN
Washington, DC: , 1808. An unparalleled offering of presidential commissions—from Thomas Jefferson to Abraham Lincoln—covering the most significant career advances of Joseph G. Totten, Chief Engineer of the U.S. Army.General Winfield "Old Fuss and Feathers" Scott served 53 years, and 20th century generals such as Omar Bradley, Douglas MacArthur, and John Vessey all served fewer than 50 years each. Few men served longer or more substantially than Totten, though Revolutionary War veteran John Walbach and Hyman Rickover, the "Father of the Nuclear Navy" served longer, at 57 and 63 years, respectively. This set of commissions, from an officer who served so long and contributed so much to American military preparedness in the run-up to the Civil War, is indeed a rare find.JOSEPH G. Rowan, [John]
A. & G. Way, Printers, City of Washington, 1808. 54pp. Disbound, scattered light foxing, mild toning. Very Good. This pamphlet is a significant piece in the Burr Conspiracy puzzle. Kentucky Congressman Rowan sought a Congressional investigation of Judge Innis's role in Aaron Burr's alleged attempt to detach the western States and Territories from the Union. This document begins with a House Resolution, signed in type by Speaker Henry Clay, asserting that "there were circumstances implicating Harry Innis" in Judge Sebastian's negotiations with the Spanish government; Innis's involvement was, the Resolution says, "detailed by himself when called on as a witness" in the case against Sebastian. DAB concludes similarly that Innes brought his troubles upon himself. "Documents endeavoring to show Judge Innis a party to a Spanish project to dismember the United States, and seduce the State of Kentucky from the Union" [Eberstadt]. "Assembled here is evidence relating to dealings of Judge [Benjamin] Sebastian of Kentucky and of other Kentuckians with Spanish authorities at New Orleans before and after the Treaty of Lorenzo of October 25, 1795, and of Spanish efforts after the treaty to persuade the inhabitants of the Western country along the Mississippi to form a separate state" [Streeter]. The intricacies of the alleged conspiracy are murky. But this document is unequivocal evidence of Kentuckians' dissatisfaction with the federal government. Many affidavits, depositions, documents, and Addresses are printed here; the most interesting expression of discontent is by John Breckinridg … [Click Below for Full Description]

The first book by George Watterston (1783-1854), a tale with strong Gothic elements about a crooked lawyer who has committed a series of reprehensible crimes and confronts the reality of his misdeeds. "The Lawyer" is the first American work of fiction about a lawyer. Watterston had an interesting career as a journalist and author. He served as the first full-time Librarian of Congress, a post which he held from 1815 to 1829 during which time he received and cataloged Thomas Jefferson's Library, bought to replace the library burned by the British. He wrote four novels in all (two set in Washington), a play, poetry and travel literature. See the DAB. All of Watterston's books are rare in the trade. This is the sole copy of this title that we have seen in 35 years.
