Among these were proof of the passive role of the stomach in vomiting, explanation of the mechanism of deglutition, experiments on alimentation with nonnitrogenous substances, experiments on digestive properties of pancreatic juice, proof of the liver's decisive role in detoxification processes, demonstration of the hemodynamic importance of the elasticity of the arteries. He provided the first proof of the cerebellum's role in maintaining the equilibrium of the organism. He made many discoveries concerning the origin, composition and circulation of the cerebrospinal fluid.". (DSB IX pp. 6/11) ---- Garrison "History of medicine" pp. 186/190 - cf. Garrison (17 références). C'est l'un des premiers médecins à être entièrement formé par le nouveau système d'enseignement médical, mettant l'accent sur l'expérience clinique hospitalière et les exerc … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCHWEIKART, Ferdinand Carl
Jena & Leipzig: Christian Ernst Gabler. FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE, OF THIS EXTREMELY RARE AND IMPORTANT WORK IN THE HISTORY OF NON-EUCLIDEAN GEOMETRY. Non-Euclidean geometry (also called hyperbolic geometry) grew out of attempts to deduce Euclid's 'parallel postulate' from his other axioms: according to this postulate, through any point not on a given straight line there is exactly one straight line that does not meet the given line. Until the work of Bolyai and Lobachevsky showed otherwise, it was generally believed that such a proof must exist. Schweikart (1780-1859) "holds an important place in the prehistory of non-Euclidean geometry. The three chief founders of hyperbolic geometry [i.e. Gauss, Bolyai and Lobachevsky] surpassed Schweikart only because of the thoroughness with which they examined specific topics in the subject" (DSB). "Schweikart was a lawyer by profession. He began his study of geometry with the publication of the book 'The theory of parallel lines including a proposal that it be banned from geometry' (1808). Contrary to the promise of the title, the book contained a false 'proof' of the parallel postulate" (Rosenfeld, A History of Non-Euclidean Geometry, p. 218). "While a student at Marburg, the lectures of J. K. F. Hauff had stimulated him to consider the problem of parallel lines, which provided the subject of his only publication in mathematics (1807). His approach was still completely Euclidean; but later he arrived at the beginnings of a hyperbolic geometry, which he called astral geometry. He made this advance independently of Gauss, Bolyai and … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Baynes in 1808. 3rd edition. description continues below the picture- - - - DISCUSSION: William Henry Bunbury [1750-1811] was an English gentleman, army officer, court figure and popular caricaturist (popular in part because, unlike some other artists, the figures in his caricatures were not drawn in the likenesses of his acquaintances and friends). His work mainly reflected his own life and experiences and those of his circle- military life, the Grand Tour of Europe, and, in this case, horse-riding. PUGIN
about the progress of a sketch, "Being able now to ascertain the time your drawing of Hy 7th Chapel will take in finishing I think it proper to inform you that if I was to charge you by time it would amount to 15 guineas but considering it is too high I intend to charge you 10 guineas, half to be paid on delivery of the drawing the other to go to accounts. I should have left the whole to go to account but having been obliged to put aside other things I find myself under the necessity of doing so. I shall set off for Paris on Thursday ... and hope having the pleasure of seeing you ... because should you not approve of the drawing you are perfectly at liberty not to take it. Every one of my pupils are coming with me to France ...", 2 sides 4to., 34 Store Street, Bedford Square, 13th August Pugin produced views of London, jointly creating the illustrations for the Microcosm of London (1808-1811) published by Rudolph Ackermann, followed by plates for Ackermann's books about Westminster Abbey, Oxford and Cambridge universities, and Winchester College. He often collaborated with other artists, notably Thomas Rowlandson. J. B Neasle is apparently John Preston Neale (1780-1847, the architectural draughtsman) was with E.W. Brayley engaged in their monumental 'Historical and Architectural Account of King Henry the Seventh's Chapel', 2 vols. 1818, 1823.

Walter Scott
J. Ballantyne and Co, 1808. Condition: Good. Marmion is a first edition, second state of the first impression, and one of 2000 copies issued. The poem concerns Lord Marmion who is after a favourite of Henry VIII, the wealthy heiress, Clara de Clare. He implicates her fiancé, Sir Ralph De Wilton, in a treasonable plot, but eventually De Wilton has Marmion unmasked just as the battle of Flodden Field begins. Marmion is killed in the battle while De Wilton regains his honor, estates, and Clara. The book was a tremendous success, despite its exceedingly high price at the time of publication. The Lady of the Lake is, first edition, first impression from 1810, and features a frontispiece of Walter Scott. Set in the Trossachs region of Scotland, it is composed of six cantos, each of which concerns the action of a single day. The poem has three main plots: the contest among three men, Roderick Dhu, James Fitz-James, and Malcolm Graeme, to win the love of Ellen Douglas; the feud and reconciliation of King James V of Scotland and James Douglas; and a war between the lowland Scots (led by James V) and the highland clans (led by Roderick Dhu of Clan Alpine). The poem was tremendously influential in the nineteenth century, and inspired the Highland Revival. Rokeby is a first edition and first impression. Publishers advertisments to the rear. Set in 1644 during the English Civil War, the poem exudes a touch of the supernatural; surrounding a haunted glen. Critical opinion was broadly favourable, with particularly positive reviews appearing in the Antijacobin Review, British Critic, and M … [Click Below for Full Description]

He counted such notables as Joshua Reynolds, Oliver Goldsmith and David Garrick amongst his friends, and Horace Walpole is said to have compared him to William Hogarth. London: Printed for the Proprietors, Effingham Wilson, 1808. This work is the famous collection of Middle Eastern and South Asian stories and folk tales. It is also known as One Thousand and one Nights. Complete in four volumes. With two illustrated plates to each volume. Volume IV is mispaginated as it has 296 written to the final leaf, should actually be 336. Translated from Antoine Galland's French edition. Galland was the first European translator of One Thousand and One Nights. CONDITION In half calf bindings with marbled boards. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear to the head and tail of spines. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Some pages, especially to volume I have been repaired by being laid on to other pages, does not affect text. Prior owner's signature to the title pages of all volumes, Anna Maria Manley. Pages are rather age toned with the odd spot throughout. Overall Condition: Very Good.

Angus, Charles (defendant).
Liverpool: Printed by William Jones, [1808]. 8vo (21 cm, 8.25"). [2] ff., 288 pp. Murder by poison seems to be a perpetually fascinating topic for the lay, the medical professional, and Agatha Christie — and this trial of Angus for using that method of doing in Miss Burns is no exception. Its record was taken in shorthand by William Jones, Jun., and contains => important material relating to medical jurisprudence and forensic medicine. The trial was a sensation: Angus, a Scots merchant and slave-trader in Liverpool, was charged with the murder of his children's governess, Margaret Burns, who was also his wife's half-sister. The case presented more than a few bizarre features: a corpse with a hole in its stomach, a baby who disappeared, a ghastly surgical instrument with a catalogue of deadly purposes, conflicting medical evidence, and a poison never identified. Binding: Circa-1865 half-black calf with green marbled paper sides, spine with gilt-stamped red leather label, gilt rules to form compartments, and blind-stamped center device in five compartments. Provenance: Contemporary signature on title-page of James Kendrick; embossed ownership stamp of J.H. Williams, rector of Llangadwaladr; bookseller's label of Wildy & Sons, London; late 19th- or early 20th-century armorial leather bookplate of Alexander MacGregor; most recently in the collection of Robert Sadoff, M.D. Binding as above, edges rubbed, small scuffs. The endpapers, curiously, appear to have been marbled over typeprint. => Very good.
