Dimensions of Each Volume: 5" X 8" X 1.25" Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon (1707-1788) was a contemporary of Carolus Linnaeus, creator of the binomial system of nomenclature. Buffon, a French naturalist, produced Histoire Naturelle, a complex and unique treatise on the natural history of animals and plants during the latter part of the 1700s, at a time when he and others were struggling to create an orderly system to understand and communicate about the myriad of new and different organisms being discovered in new lands and seas around the world. During Buffon's time, common names were in widespread use but had limited value in distinguishing one unique type of organism from others that were similar, yet different. He and Linnaeus were the first to produce workable classification systems which were being adopted by other practitioners of taxonomic practice about the time of the French Revolution. Ancillary to these developments, the paper that was used for printing information prior to the early 1800's was created manually. Furthermore, the engravings produced to augment texts with images were cut into wood or plates of copper to produce figures in black and white, and perhaps colored individually by hand. His De la Littérature des Nègres (Paris, 1808) was aimed at the seemingly false sympathy of Thomas Jefferson as expressed in his Notes on Virginia. Grégoire dedicated his work "à tous les hommes courageux qui ont plaidé la cause des malheureux Noirs et Sang-mêlés." It includes biographical portraits of fifteen blacks, including Phillis Wheatly, Jamaican poet Francis Williams, Olaudah Equiano, and Ignatius Sancho. Of the English translation, published in Brooklyn in 1810, Blockson wrote, "This now scarce volume set the standards by which most biographical and historical works on gifted blacks were written during the following decades." Dimensions of Each Volume: 5" X 8" X 1.25" Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon (1707-1788) was a contemporary of Carolus Linnaeus, creator of the binomial system of nomenclature. [Washington, D.C.], 1808. Hard Cover. Very Good binding. Contemporary sammelband of government publications, collected by Senator John Smith in late 1807 and early 1808.~~Washington D. C., various government printers, 1807-1808. 49 volumes with seventeen folding tables, bound in quarter brown Japanese tissue over marbled paper boards, with remnants of the contemporary red leather label laid down. ~~First Edition Senate reports, gathered by John Smith (1735-1824). With the Senator's signature on the preliminary title page, and the final pamphlet published on the 25th of April, 1808, the day Smith resigned due to the political fallout from his involvement in the Burr Conspiracy. John Smith was one of Ohio's first two senators, taking office on October 25, 1803, after leading Ohio's successful bid for statehood. Per the United States Senate biographies, "In 1805, former Vice President Aaron Burr sought his support in organizing a military expedition against Spanish Florida. Although Smith claimed he had no interest in Burr's plot to force secession of Spanish territories, he agreed to provide supplies for the proposed expedition. [...] Soon after the Senate convened in late 1807, members opened an investigation into Smith's conduct," led by John Quincy Adams. Though he avoided expulsion by the narrowest of margins, Smith took this as the loss it was, and resigned his post on April 25, 1808; his close association with the conspirator quashed any goodwill he may have had with his senatorial colleagues. This series of Government publications details how forefront the conspiracy … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pestalozzi, Johann Heinrich, Swiss pedagogue and educational reformer (1746-1827).
Yverdon, 22. XI. 1808. Large 4to. 4 pp. on bifolium. A nice, long letter to Beethoven's confidants, Therese and Josephine Brunsvik. The Hungarian countesses had just spent six weeks at Pestalozzi's Yverdon institute to train Josephine's six- and seven-year-old sons, Franz and Karl. They were enthusiastic about the Institute: "They promised to help [Pestalozzi] to recommend him to Vienna and especially to the Hungarian government so that he would be entrusted with the reorganization of Hungarian education" (Weisz, p. 201). In November 1808 they returned to Hungary in the company of the young Lucerneian Georg Sigrist (later clergyman in Horw). Pestalozzi's present farewell letter, which also speaks of the profound touch of the pedagogue, reached them in Zurich.

Acts Passed at a General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Virginia 1808-1820 Up for sale is a great run of 8 bound books of early Virginia law. It is very rare to find a set of these early books. These are in nice overall condition with 20th-century rebinding. Some age spotting and minor damage is present in some of the books but they are in overall very clean and very nice condition. These books provide a rare glance into the pre-civil war south.
