A charming image of the innocence and curiosity of childhood.Adam Buck (1759-1833) made a name for himself as an accomplished miniature painter. During his career he exhibited more than 170 paintings at the Royal Academy and was a regular contributor to the Society of British Artists, and the British Institution. His work was eagerly reproduced by contemporary engravers; and these delicate prints enjoyed a wide circulation throughout England and Europe.         Signaux de la ligne sémaphorique.

[1808]. 1808 1 vol. in-4° (290 x 188 mm.) de 40 pp. manuscrites, numérotées à la main, (saut de p. dans la numérotation sans interruption dans le texte), [2] ff. blancs. Cousues. 1 vol. 4to. [40] manuscript ll. Contemporary paperboards. Interesting manuscript written few years after the introduction of the semaphore system, great progress for naval signalling. It was under very precise rules, given in the present manuscript. Fine condition.

xii, [2], 83 pp. 8vo, Middle Hill boards (spine defective & shaky), uncut. Paris: Tilliard Frères, 1808. The rare sale catalogue of the great botanical library of Étienne Pierre Ventenat (1757-1808), librarian of the Panthéon and one of the leading French botanists of the period. While not a large library (612 lots), this was one of the finest botanical libraries formed during the end of the 18th century and was nearly complete in the more modern works. Ventenat used his relationships and skills as a librarian to buy the best copies possible. Many of the books were annotated by him. Lots 603-11 consisted of Ventenat's collections of botanical specimens (lot 603 contained 14-15,000 specimens from all over the world!). The preliminary leaves contain a life of Ventenat. The auctioneer has supplied two very useful indexes, one of authors and another of anonymous works. This copy has the two-page schedule of the sale. Very good copy from the library of Sir Thomas Phillipps with "MHC" written on the title. The boards are a dead give-away of the Middle Hill provenance: brown boards, joined to the book on the cheap. Bookplate of A.R.A. Hobson. ? Grolier Club, Printed Catalogues of French Books Auctions…1643-1830, 484. Zoho kafu benran [trans. Textile Designs of India]

27 full-page woodcuts (the first heightened in color). 24 folding leaves. 8vo, orig. wrappers (unimportant worming, mostly in gutter), orig. block printed title label on upper cover, new stitching. N.p.: 1808. Second edition, an abridgement of the author's earlier work which appeared in 1781 (an impossibly rare book). In the 17th and 18th centuries, there was an active trade between India and Japan, importing Indian "sarasa" chintz - a highly glazed printed calico - from the Coromandel coast to the island nation. Manuals were produced in Japan with color directives to encourage Japanese textile printers to copy the Indian designs. In this manual, the author describes the complicated technique in which colors are fixed on the surface of cotton with woodblock mordant stamping. Endless varieties of vegetable, animal, and mineral pigments were employed. The very attractive frontispiece depicts the textile designer planning a forthcoming design. He sits at a desk with pens, inks, and a blank sheet of fabric. Fine copy.

        Manuel des Amphitryons

Paris: Capelle et Renand, 1808. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition. Contemporary tree calf, a few small wormholes to binding, light wear to spine and hinges, a few surface marks - an attractive binding overall. Frontis and title lightly soiled, small repair to the verso of one plate, one plate and one page with a short closed tear, small tear to another plate - light occasional browning; a very good copy. The classic text on hosting - from carving, to menus to how to conduct oneself. Frontispiece showing the mid-air carving that began with Il Trinciante and still persisted. 384pp, 16 plates and the frontis. Cagle 233, Oberle 135, Bitting 203, Vicaire 427, Simon 805. Though all of his books were published after the revolution, Grimod de La Reynière's adventures in gastronomy began much earlier. His endless dinner parties (where he locked the guests in his home and sold tickets to spectators) and fake funerals (one for himself), both mocked the huge banquets of the last days of the King and Queen, and presaged a more intimate, individual expression of the gourmet spirit. Size: 8vo (octavo). Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Cooking, Wine & Dining; Inventory No: CAT000312.

[Frankfort, Ky.?: Printed at the Palladium?], 1808. Broadside, 9 x 7 1/2 inches. Light soiling and wear. Paper flaws affecting a few letters but with no loss. Very good. A campaign endorsement for General Charles Scott in his first, successful run for the office of Governor of Kentucky. Scott (1739-1813), a native of Virginia and a veteran of both the French and Indian War and the American Revolution, served for a time as George Washington's chief of intelligence. He moved to Woodford County, Kentucky in 1787, participated in the border conflicts against the Indians, including the 1790 Harmar expedition and the Fallen Timbers campaign of 1794, before entering politics and serving as Kentucky's fourth governor from 1808 to 1812. This broadside urges support of the effort to approve funding for the pensions of Revolutionary War veterans, and Scott's run for the governorship succeeded the following month. It is signed in type at the end by "A Friend of the Military, July 16th, 1808." Rare and early for the area. Not in Hummel or Shaw & Shoemaker. OCLC locates only one copy, at the Society of the Cincinnati.

Autograph letter signed ("Aldini"). Milano, 18. VI. 1808.

1808. 4to. 2½ pp. on double leaf. A rather indignant letter to a colleague, written in his capacity as city council, expressing his displeasure that a report drafted by him had found no support in the Council: "[...] - Slight clipped section on f. 2 due to broken seal (not touching text).

The True Nature of Imposture, Fully Displayed in The Life of Mahomet. [...] The Tenth Edition, corrected. London, W. Baynes, 1808.

1808. 8vo. (4), XVIII, 231, (1) pp. With engr. portrait frontispiece. Contemp. marbled half calf with giltstamped spine title. Tenth edition of this "often reprinted" (DNB) treatise, first published in 1697. Its scholarship depended in particular on Pococke. "Prideaux's literary reputation rests on his 'Life of Mahomet' (1697) [... of which] the story has been told that the bookseller to whom he offered the manuscript said he 'could wish there were a little more humour in it.' No sign of humour was ever shown by Prideaux, except in his proposal (26 Nov. 1715) for a hospital in each university, to be called 'Drone Hall,' for useless fellows and students. The 'Life of Mahomet' was in fact pointed as a polemical tract against the deists. [...] Some of its errors were noted by Sale in the discourse and notes to his translation of the 'Koran,' 1734" (ibid.). - From the library of the British philosopher of religion, David Arthur Pailin (b. 1936), with his bookplate and notes laid in. Previously in the collection of Charles William Tupper (b. 1898), grandson of the Canadian physician and sometime Prime Minister Sir Charles Tupper (1821-1915), one of the Canadian Fathers of Confederation, with his engr. armorial bookplate.
