The Cruise; a Poetical sketch, in Eight Cantos. By a Naval Officer.

London: Printed for J. Hatchard, 1808 - Octavo (228 × 132 mm). Uncut in original boards, rebacked to style with replacement paper label. Boards a little rubbed at the extremities, light toning, scattered foxing, a very good copy. First edition of this extremely uncommon poetical account of a two-month "shakedown" cruise with a new ship's company on a British man of war. The work was begun as a pastime during a "regimen on shore recruiting an extremely exhausted constitution". Finding his "Sketches of Scenes which had occurred on Naval Service increasing," the author decided to connect them with a "Regular Detail of Duties," and "Characters to be met with in the Service," in the belief that "a Work might be formed, conveying a correct idea of the Naval Life during so memorable an Epoch as the present." The cruise begins at the latter end of September 1805, and ends with the arrival of the news of the great victory at Trafalgar and the death of Nelson; "the foe is beaten! - nay!- they are no more!! - But Nelson, godlike Nelson!, lies in gore!!! Nelson's the fearful price! - our spirits sink, - e'en while the brimming cup of joy we drink!" In the main the style of this epic poem is far less fraught, prosaic almost, presenting a highly-detailed and graphic narrative of life, above and below decks, onboard a man of war undertaking a typical cruise in home waters and on the enemy coast during the Napoleonic wars. The main text is accompanied by extensive factual and historical notes which are further indexed at the end, the whole comprising an almost encyclopaedic compilation of information on the minutiae of life - duties, hardships and attitudes - manning the "wooden walls" during the Nelsonian period. Despite the wealth of detail, the author remains persistent in his anonymity. Extremely uncommon: only two copies on COPAC (BL and Cambridge); no copies on OCLC or KVK; not in NMM; just one copy at auction in over 40 years. [Attributes: First Edition]

Les antiquaires. Manuscrit autographe complet et unique.

Complete autograph manuscript of 12 pages in-8 6 sheets under difficult to decipher, perhaps: "Sade or the kingdoms of The One" and be published under the title "Some remarks on Sade" in Review No. 3-4 of 7 August 1946.Manuscript writing very dense, with many erasures, corrections and additions."It's the thought of Sade pushing that Blanchot to completion, and it is also that of Blanchot that accomplishes that of Sade." (Georges Bataille)Writing and friendship of Battle are probably not unrelated to the importance Blanchot give his life to this father figure of his philosophical reflection. These few remarks on Sade, however, are the first study that Blanchot dedicated to this writer that he had hitherto almost never mentioned. In this first impartial and sometimes severe analysis, Blanchot points out the weaknesses of literary posture Sade and relative immorality in a post-revolutionary society steeped in ideological contradictions. However, under the artifice of extreme expression, Blanchot reveals a far more disconcerting and subversive philosophy that these "great extravagance."With remarkable acuity, he portrays a unique spirit, all espousing high ideals of his time, but placing them in the filter of his nihilistic singularity: "Freedom, in his view, is that the prohibition for anyone to be anything other than what he wants, is to say nothing. "The pen of Blanchot, Sadism is no longer enjoyment of violence against others, but expression of "the infinite loneliness of the individual" in a world "where beings reports, the general forms of life and to the language out is already used in the universal destruction. "; "And now all the particular cruelties are no longer intended (...) to bring to the One pleasant evidence of its existence in the middle of nothing. "If, as Bataille points out, a more innovative look, reading Sade Blanchot reveals a community of thought is probably through the conclusion of this first major study that Blanchot solitary demonstrates most clearly his Sade attachment to the One:"And now we come to think if the circumstances were de Sade a man never reduced to the misery of an eternal prison, itself has succeeded in making his prison image loneliness of universe where his reign only glory forever almighty. The prison did not mind, it is his work, it is the measure of the world on which he has more rights than God himself, because it not only reigns supreme, but he banished and excluded all creatures. Such is the advantage of the Destroyer of the Creator. This atheist is more God than God. Does also called divine. " S.n. s.l. août 1808 in-8 (17,5x21,5cm) (40f.) (3f. bl.) en feuilles

The Farmer's Boy (with double fore-edge painting)

London: Verner, Hood, and Sharpe Poultry; and Longman, Hust, Rees and Orme, Paternoster-Row, 1808. 99 pp. + notes and advertisements. Approximately 4 x 6 1/4"; Straight-grain red morocco, 5 raised bands, gilt borders and spine, all edges gilt, tenth edition (stated), slightly corner bumped, otherwise in near fine condition. Robert Bloomfield (1766 - 1823), was an English self-educated poet. He was born into a poor family and died in debt, although he had some success with The Farmer's Boy, his best known work. Written in iambic pentameter couplets, The Farmer's Boy describes rural life through the seasons, often showing that it is harsh work, although the tone is still cheerful. The double fore-edge paintings are by an unknown artist and show a fox-hunting scene on one side and the scene of an angler in a small boat on the other, nicely but not elaborately done

Des Knaben Wunderhorn. Alte Deutsche Lieder.

Heidelberg, Mohr und Zimmer, 1806 and 1808. - 8vo. 3 vols. 470 pp. (4), 448 pp. (4), 253, (1), 103, (1) pp. With 3 engr. title pages as well as an engr. title and frontispiece to the appendix. Contemp. full calf with giltstamped spine labels. Spines lightly sprinkled red. First edition of the principal work of German romanticism, one of the era's most beautiful and best-known publications. Includes the frequently-lacking appendix and all half titles. Without the printed main title page to the first volume, which was probably never published at all: Mallon notes that he was unable to verify a single copy containing it, adding that most copies lack both a main title and a half title. The half titles of vol. 2 and 3 have been mounted before the respective engraved titles. Due to their size, these beautiful engravings as well as the frontispiece to the appendix (all after and by W. Grimm and E. L. Grimm) are frequently found trimmed by the binder's knife, but they are intact in the present copy. Some slight occasional foxing due to paper, but altogether a very appealing and apparently entirely complete set. - Provenance: from the estate of the Frankfurt lawyer Wilhelm A. Schaaf (1929-2015), a specialist in economic, commercial and insolvency law. WG 6 (Arnim) & 9 (Brentano). Goedeke VI, 73, 12. Mallon (Arnim) 27, 36-38. Mallon (Brentano) 17, 25-27.       ELEGANTE DAMES IN HET BOIS DE BOULOGNEMode tekening met pen en waterverf op karton door Jules David (1808 - Parijs - 1892). Gesigneerd links onder. Verso gedateerd/beschreven: ?1877 / 3ème No d?Avril / No 16?'. 1808. (ADDISON and STEELE, et al.). The Spectator; A New Edition: Corrected from the Originals, with a Preface, Historical and Biographical, by Alexander Chalmers. London: J. Johnson et al., 1808. Eight volumes. 12mo, contemporary full diced brown calf gilt, mottled spines, marbled endpapers and edges. $1600.Early 19th-century edition, handsomely bound.Presenting essays by Addison, Richard Steele, Alexander Pope, Thomas Tickell and others, The Spectator, originally published 1711-14, “appeared daily, and was immensely popular, particularly with the new growing middle-class readership… The papers are mainly concerned with manners, morals, and literature. Their object is ‘to enliven morality with wit, and to temper wit with morality” (Drabble, 925-6). Addison helped set the pattern and establish the vogue for the periodical in the 18th-century, and cultivated a receptive audience for the emerging art form of the novel. “The Spectator made a mark in English literature, and fixed a form which was adopted with servile fidelity by many succeeding periodicals till the end of the century” (DNB). Bookplate.Scattered foxing to first few pages in each volume, interiors otherwise fine. Contemporary diced calf with only light wear. A very handsome set.

Lutgers met geschiedkundige aanteekeningen van W.J. Hofdijk.[The Hague, J.D. Steuerwald], 1869. Folio. With a lithographed title-page (with a separately tinted lithographed view) and 87 tinted lithographed plates (ca. 16.5 x 22.5 cm), designed and lithographed by P.J. Lutgers. Near contemporary half sheepskin by J.A. Loeb

      - Landwehr, Coloured plates 356; Scheen, p. 732; Thieme & Becker XXIII, p. 480. Enlarged second edition of the most detailed and extensive set of views of stately houses and their gardens, other buildings and landscapes, all in the vicinity of Utrecht, with 88 tinted lithographs (including the title-page). Most of the views show people in the foreground, and some include boats on the canals, horses, cattle, dogs, etc. The view of the town of Rhenen (35 kilometres east of Utrecht) even shows the recently introduced steam boats on the river. All were drawn in situ by Lutgers (1808-1874), who spent about ten years preparing this last of his four great series of views. This time, however, he used tint blocks, giving a beige background to most of each print, but with a few areas left white to indicate the lighting or to highlight a feature. The lithographic title-page is followed by a two-page dedication to the queen (Sophia Frederica Mathilda, wife of King Willem III), Lutgers' two-page preface, a two-page list of the plates, and eighteen pages with Hofdijk's notes on the history and owners of the houses depicted. Some of the plates foxed. Binding worn along the extremities with a few minor damages to the spine. Overall in good condition.

Théorie des Quatre Mouvemens et des Destinées générales. Prospectus et Annonce de la Découverte.

'Leipzig' (Lyons): n.p. 1808. Octavo, with a folding table; contemporary sheep, flat spine gilt. First edition of a most important book, and extremely rare. The first major work published by Fourier, it is a genuine attempt to engineer a paradise: 'Quite literally for Fourier, the ideal city was to appear on the earth' (Helen Rosenau, The Ideal City). Although he is best remembered for his development of the 'phalange' or phalanx, an ideal community which combined the agricultural and the industrial in perfect synthesis, it is in the Théorie des Quatre Mouvemens that Fourier expounded the bases for all of his later work with the revolutionary notion of 'passionate attraction', where the 'passions rather than reason were to be harnessed to ensure the maximum gratification of sexual, social, and other instinctual desires' (Claeys et al., Utopia). Fourier hoped that the ideas he announced here would inspire 1000 loyal subscribers and lead to publication of a massive six-volume undertaking. Despite being disappointed in his hopes, it is 'acknowledged not simply as a pioneering exploration of the social, but also as a founding document of socialist thought' (Jones, Introduction to the Theory of the Four Movements). It is one of the most amazing works of social theory ever published. Famously, Fourier held that the Enlightenment faith in civilisation was nothing more than a symptom of decadence, but that this decadence is one of the required steps for the impending leap from chaos into harmony, not only for the Earth but for the whole solar system. His analysis of the impending 70,000 years of harmony is neatly summarised in the folding chart. If his mathematical predictions were not outlandish enough, the detailed asides he offers are truly astonishing. He outlines, for instance, his staunch belief that the Earth would form a Northern Crown similar to the Rings of Saturn which would, in turn, change the chemical balance of the seas until it became like lemonade. Naturally this would also lead to the demise of the 'horribles légions de monstres marins' which have been plaguing humanity.Fourier once humbly commented 'I alone comprehend the true plan and the means of fulfilling it'. Engels christened him an ironist. Some sporadic staining; a good copy.

Ansicht von Sidney von der Südseite, und der Mündung des Parramatta Flusses.

probably Weimar: circa, 1808. Single sheet, 340 x 222 mm., laid paper, featuring an engraved view of Sydney Cove, slight browning, very good. A good view of Sydney Cove closely based on the original engraving in the official publication of the Baudin voyage. It was engraved for the German edition of the Baudin account, with the original French caption slightly enhanced to read "View of Sydney from the south-side with the mouth of the Parramatta River". The French encampment is in the foreground of the picture, and several of the sailors can be seen working on repairs to their ships. To the left a small group of aborigines is testament to the close quarters in which the French bivouacked, and a reminder of why Nicolas-Martin Petit was able to create his famous suite of portraits of Port Jackson aborigines. This is quite a rare image; there is a copy in the Nan Kivell collection of the National Library of Australia. The German edition of the Baudin voyage was first published as Entdeckungsreise nach Australien (Weimar, 1808-1819). Slight browning.

Carte Générale de la Terre Napoléon.

Paris: Gravé par Tardieu, 1808. Engraved chart measuring 580 x 850 mm. (sheet size). Impressive early chart of the South Australian coastline revealing French colonial ambitions for Australia, a result of the survey undertaken during the Baudin expedition in Australian waters during 1802. As the title "Terre Napoleon" strongly implies, the map is tangible proof of French colonial ambitions for Australia. At the time of the Baudin voyage a Napoleonic order existed to conquer the continent, a plan ultimately frustrated by defeat in Europe. The place names engraved on this chart maps are almost entirely in French; interestingly, when the second edition of Baudin's voyage was published in 1824 most of these names were discretely changed into English.Although the map bears the engraved date of 1808 it was included in the atlas volume of the official voyage account published in 1812. A milestone in mapping the continent, this was the first Australian atlas ever published. Although Matthew Flinders charted this coastline at the same time as Baudin, and the two expeditions famously met in Encounter Bay, Flinders' publication was delayed by several years due to his imprisonment at the hands of the French on Mauritius. The matter of precedence remained a bone of contention between the English and the French for some time as here there is no acknowledgement of Flinders' prior discoveries. This map is beautifully enhanced by vignettes of Australian flora and fauna based on drawings by Charles Alexandre Lesueur (featuring kangaroos and sea lions reclining composed beneath an idealised neoclassical figure). Most examples are removed from the atlas and are subsequently folded, however this example is a single unfolded sheet and remains in excellent condition. Blank margins slightly rubbed with a few a few closed tears (now expertly repaired, engraving unaffected); otherwise fine overall.

Extraordinary Hardships and Adventures of Captain David Woodard.

London: Thomas Tegg, circa, 1808. Small octavo, 28pp, large folding aquatint frontispiece, old wrappers, in cloth case with ties. Scarce copy of a rare Tegg pamphlet, detailing the adventures of an American sailor in modern Sulawesi in the early 1790s. Woodard's account is of some note due to the fact that it represents a relatively early and significant English-language account of the seas of south-east Asia, notably the Celebes Sea, but also Batavia (Jakarta).Woodard had sailed in the American ship Enterprise from Batavia bound for Manila. He and five companions were sent off in small boat to purchase provisions, but found themselves cut off by a storm, finally landing at Celebes where one of them, Archibald Millar, was killed in a fight with the local Malays. Imprisoned by their captors, they finally escaped with the help of a Muslim priest, and made their way back to Batavia. The pamphlet is based on The Narrative of Captain David Woodard (London, 1804), but being much shorter does not include that longer works notes mutiny on the Bounty; the wrecks of the Antelope and Pandora; the sufferings of some of the crew of the Shah Hormazier in Torres Strait.Tegg pamphlets, especially those in good condition, are quite uncommon. Ferguson originally noted only one copy of this (NYPL), but added three in time for the Addenda: his own copy, and copies in the Mitchell and National Libraries. Ferguson also gives the putative date of 1808 for publication, which is supported by the fact that one page of the present copy is clearly watermarked "1807"

Le Cook de la Jeunesse, ou Extrait des voyages les plus récens dans les régions les plus éloignées.

Paris: n.p. 1808. Two volumes, duodecimo, the three wide folding engraved plates after John Webber in very clean and crisp condition; completely uncut in the original orange paper wrappers. A handsome copy of this charming and popular French account of various voyages for children. As the title suggests, most of the material here is taken directly from the voyages of Captain Cook. The three fine and large folding engraved plates, all after Webber, respectively depict a Maori war canoe, a walrus hunt and a Tahitian human sacrifice. There were a number of juvenile editions based on Jean-Pierre Bérenger's popular collections of voyage accounts which first appeared in 1780. Bérenger was a Swiss polymath; politically active, he was exiled from Geneva and spent much of his adult life in Lausanne. He wrote several important books on geography and the voyages to the Pacific. This Paris publication, largely devoted to the voyages of Cook, has chapters describing Tahiti, New Zealand, Unalaska, and the Sandwich Islands, followed by an abridged life of the navigator. Forbes records two editions published in Avignon (370 & 495 in the Hawaiian National Bibliography) but did not note this edition, although the second volume includes a lengthy section, some fifty pages, devoted to Hawaii. A little dusted and rubbed, spines wearing; a very attractive set in unsophisticated condition.
