Premier Cours du Code Napoleon Explique par Monsieur Vanhoogten

      0. Early Lectures on the Code Napoleon [Manuscript]. Premier Cours du Code Napoleon Explique par Monsieur Professeur Vanhoogten a la Faculte de Droit de l'Universite de Bruxelles. Premiere Partie. Brussels, 1808-1809. 480 pp. Quarto (8" x 6-1/4"). Contemporary tree calf, blind fillets to boards, gilt ornaments and lettering piece, reading Questions de Droit, to spine, marbled endpapers, untrimmed edges. Moderate rubbing to extremities, chipping to foot of backstrip, front board, free endpaper and following leaf, a blank, detached, early bookplate of the Academie de Bruxelles, Faculte de Droit and later owner stamp to half-title, another later owner stamp to p. 473. Content in neat hand, light toning to interior. * This is a fair copy of what appears to be two-volume set of notes. Addressing the first 143 articles of the Code Napoleon, they were dictated by Prof. Vanhoogten of the law faculty of the University of Brussels, an institution established by the French. Each page is divided into two columns; one has notes, the other was left blank for later annotations, which were never added. In all, these notes show how the code was taught to future lawyers when it was only a few years old. It also offers insights into the way it was interpreted in nations conquered by Napoleon.

Catalogue des Livres de la Bibliothèque de feu M. E.P. Ventenat...Suivi de la Description de différens Herbiers, Graines, Fruits étrangers, etc., et objets de curiosité

xii, 83 pp. 8vo, later wrappers. Paris: Tilliard Frères, 1808. The rare sale catalogue of the great botanical library of Étienne Pierre Ventenat (1757-1808), librarian of the Panthéon and one of the leading French botanists of the period. While not a large library (612 lots), this was one of the finest botanical libraries formed during the end of the 18th century and was nearly complete in the more modern works. Ventenat used his relationships and skills as a librarian to buy the best copies possible. Many of the books were annotated by him. Fine copy. Lots 603-11 consisted of Ventenat's collections of botanical specimens (lot 603 contained 14-15,000 specimens from all over the world!). The preliminary leaves contain a life of Ventenat. The auctioneer has supplied two very useful indexes, one of authors and another of anonymous works. ❧ Grolier Club, Printed Catalogues of French Books Auctions...1643-1830, 484. The Trial of Charles Angus, Esq, On an Indictment for the Wilful

1808. Scarce Trial Involving Poison, Abortion and Murder [Trial]. Angus, Charles, Defendant. Jones, William, Jr., Reporter. The Trial of Charles Angus, Esq., On an Indictment for the Wilful Murder of Margaret Burns, At the Assizes Held at Lancaster, On Friday, 2d Sept. 1808. Before the Hon. Sir Alan Chambre, One of the Justices of His Majesty's Court of Common Pleas. Taken in Short Hand. Liverpool: Printed by William Jones, [1808]. [iv], 288 pp. Octavo (8" x 5"). Three-quarter calf over marbled boards, rebacked with period-style gilt spine with lettering piece, hinges mended. Light rubbing to boards, corners lightly bumped, residue from bookplate to front pastedown, front free endpaper and final leaf re-hinged (and a small tear near the gutter carefully repaired). Moderate toning to text, light foxing in a few places, some soiling to verso of final leaf, internally clean. A nice copy. * Only edition. Angus was charged with assisting Margaret Burns in the abortion of their child. They used "corrosive sublimate of Mercury," which killed the fetus, and Margaret. Angus was acquitted after a trial rich in lurid detail. The publisher, who also recorded the trial in shorthand, clearly hoped to profit from the scandalous nature of the trial. Whatever commercial success this publication may have had, it is an interesting trial that tells us much about the status of women in northern Britain in the early nineteenth century. Memoirs of Josias Rogers, Esq. Commander of his Majesty’s Ship Quebec

Lon., 1808.. b/w frontis. engraving. Rogers entered the Royal Navy in 1771 and served off Rhode Island. In 1776 he was shipwrecked in Delaware and taken prisoner by the Americans. He escaped and spent the next years marauding American shipping. He made lieutenant in 1778 and participated in the attack on Charleston in 1780. Captured again off New Jersey, and severely wounded, he was transferred to the North Sea where he made captain. He was flag captain to St. Vincent in 1790, and followed him to the West Indies aboard the Quebec in 1793. He died there of yellow fever in 1795, but he packed a great deal of adventure into his 25 year career, and this book recounts most of it. Much on the Revolutionary War and the West Indies. Howes G-191. Cundall, 1911. Bound in full tree calf. Front board detached, spine label chipped. By all appearances this was a library book at some point in its career. There is evidence of labels having been removed from front blank and back paste down. Old repaired tear on title page, with loss of two letters in title. Still, a serviceable copy of a rare book.

WORKS...Arranged by Thomas Sheridan with Notes, Historical and Critical. A New Edition...Corrected and Revised by John Nichols

London: for J. Johnson, 1808. 19 volumes. Engraved portrait in Volume I. 8vo, fine three-quarter green-brown morocco over marbled boards, the spines with gilt decorated raised bands, gilt lozenge designs tooled in gilt within the compartments, t.e.g. A pleasing set, quite handsome and well preserved with minimal age evidence. AN IMPORTANT COLLECTION OF THE WORKS, this is a handsome set incorporating all of Swift's finest writings. Swift was the author of one of the most famous works in all of English literature, but his general work was prodigious. His highly important "Gulliver's Travels" is a biting political satire ingeniously styled after the many narratives of travel and exploration popular at the time, which Swift had read in the library of his employer, Sir William Temple. And though most satire, especially political satire, is quickly rendered unintelligible or uninteresting with the passage of time, Swift endowed his story with so much imagination that it has never passed out of the canon of classics in English literature. This most famous of Swift's works, was published anonymously as the author was afraid of the reception the book might meet with. His satire was directed at the prevailing powers of the day, and it has become known as one of the greatest literary works ever penned.

        The Works of William Robertson

      - London - T. Cadell et al., 1808 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The complete historical works of William Robertson, Scottish historian. Containing:The History of Scotland During the Reigns of Queen Mary and of King James VI (the eighteenth edition, in three volumes)The History of America (the eleventh edition, in four volumes)The History of the Reign of the Emperor Charles V (the eleventh edition, in four volumes)An Historical Disquisition Concerning the Knowledge which the Ancients Had of India (fifth edition)The History of Scotland was a huge success because Robertson appeared to his readers to move Scotland into the mainstream of polite culture. His study of elocution and style had enabled him to craft prose that was harmonious, balanced, and, above all, correct metropolitan English. In the field of historical writing in particular no one had yet achieved such a magisterial style. Though occupied with church and university, Robertson was also engaged on his next history, the work that he hoped would enhance his European reputation. By the end of 1759 he was firmly decided upon the history of the reign of Charles V. The book's structure initially was a conventional political narrative, related in chronological order and centred on Charles's life and career. After the publication of Charles V, Robertson quickly turned to a new historical project, and on 28 May 1777 the History of America was published in two volumes, again to a very positive reception. Its success was even more marked on the continent, where it was considered Robertson's masterpiece (in Suard's translation), and went through nine editions between 1777 and 1780. With an account of the life and writings of the author by Dugald Stewart. Illustrated with 3 portraits of Robertson and two folding plates. Complete in twelve volumes. Condition: Rebacked in contemporary calf bindings with original boards preserved. Externally, rather worn, with rubbing and marks. Eighteen joints starting. Hinges are strained. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, and generally clean, though with some spotting to the first and last few pages and tidemarks to most volumes. Overall: GOOD ONLY..

Tales of terror; with an introductory dialogue [bound with] Gold-Headed Cane, The [Biographical sketches of John Radcliffe, Richard Mead, Antony Askew, David Pitcairn, and Matthew Baillie]

London: Printed for L. Bell, by Bulmer and Co. / John Murray, Albemarle Street, 1808. Second Edition. Quarter-Bound Calf. Near Fine. 8vo: [4],155,[1], with three horrifying hand-colored folding plates (one the frontispiece) and extra-illustrated title page with hand-colored vignette; [8],179,[1]pp, with illustrated title page and numerous woodcuts in text. Contemporary brown quarter-calf over marbled boards, flat spine in five compartments with center medallion in each, red morocco lettering piece. An excellent copy, rebacked with original spine laid down, pages generally clean and bright, plates with especially vivid coloring. Gothic Writers, p. 400. Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, pp 264-266. Summers, A Gothic bibliography, pp. 525-27. Allibone 1092. Heirs of Hippocrates 1397. Garrison-Morton 6709. Osler 6717. Waller 16091. Cushing M48. & Second Edition (so stated) of the first work, First Edition of the second. Tales of Terror was originally published in 1801 without The Abbot of Leiston, apparently as a parody of M. G. Lewis's Tales of Wonder. The book is often attributed to Lewis, but Summers says "it seems probable that Lewis had no connection with any book with the title 'Tales of Terror.' . . . The Kelso book of 1799 often listed as 'Tales of Terror' was not 'Tales of Terror' but was 'An Apology for Tales of Terror.' . . . 'Tales of Terror' is a different book. . . . gruesome in its illustrations, even disgusting, and it seems impossible that Lewis could have had anything to do with it. Interestingly, Louis Peck, Lewis's biographer, claims to have retrieved from the Shelley estate a copy of Tales of Terror, "which bears evidence of hard use and is marked throughout by childish characters, perhaps in the hand of Shelley." (Gothic Writers) The Gold-Headed Cane recounts the adventures of a famous cane, successively in the possession of the Georgian physicians John Radcliffe, Richard Mead, Anthony Askew, David Pitcairn, and Matthew Baillie, and then returned to a glass case in the library of London's Royal College of Physicians. "A gold-headed cane was once a conspicuous part of the physician's adornment, and the particular gold-headed cane of this work was owned by Dr. John Radcliffe (1650-1714), an irascible London physician, who passed it on to a younger contemporary. The custom of passing on the cane continued through a series of five physicians, ending with Matthew Baillie, whose widow presented it to the Royal College of Physicians in 1823. The originally anonymous book is written as an 'autobiography' of the cane and, in a series of charming essays, tells the story—actually biographies—of its several owners. Along the way there is much information concerning the state of medicine and its practice in England during the eighteenth century." (Heirs of Hippocrates) N. B. red.) Der Nordische Kontrolleur. 1-2. (Stockholm, J. P. Lindh), 1808-09. 8:o. (2),+ 384; (2),+ 385-701 s. Liten fläck s. 55 och s. 495, samt enstaka lagerfläckar, andra titelbladet förstärkt i innerkant, reva s. 671-672. Något nötta samtida marmorerade pappband, gröna titeletiketter. Två volymer. Ur Ericsbergs bibliotek. Setterwall 3340.

[Bouquet of flowers with Cabbage White butterfly]

[Paris] & London: Danlos ainé and Victor Delarue, [1808]. Stipple engraving, printed in colours, finished by hand, by Alexandre Chaponnier. Expertly re-backed with mulberry paper repairing a three inch tear lower right. 20 x 15 1/2 inches. An extremely rare large scale print after Bessa, a contemporary of Redouté. This `magnificent large ' print (Dunthorne) is from a work called Fleurs et Fruits gravés et coloriés sur les peintures aquarelles faites d'après nature, published in Paris in 1808, with 24 plates after Bessa. However, the book is so rare that even in 1938 Gordon Dunthorne had only been able to find five of the plates. The present print is of a red and white tulip, a blue hyacinth and two stems of multi-headed narcissus, with a Cabbage White butterfly settled on one of the broad leaves of the tulip. Here Bessa and Chaponnier have combined to produce a plate that is a match for any printed image from Redouté, and in terms of scale larger than anything he produced. Cf. Dunthorne 31
