FRIES, Jakob Friedrich
1807. 12mo, [2], 80, [1] pp., original paper covers, edges uncut, some pencil underlining but a well-preserved copy. Fries taught at the University of Jena at the same time as Hegel, and was greatly disliked by him. 'One could say that one reason Hegel published the Phenomenology of Spirit (1807) was to try to get university positions before Fries got them. Fries did get a position at the University of Heidelberg in 1805 and Hegel was stunned. Fries published a book with the title of Knowledge, Faith and Intimation (1805). Fries thinks that these feelings that we have are independent of reason and understanding "Ahndung," or "intimation." Feelings (inkling, divination, presentiment) are intimations of the transcendent. Fries was a follower of Kant, but not with the Idealism of Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel. Rather he wanted the post-Kantians to go toward an empiricist and moralistic way'. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

LEWIS, Matthew Gregory (1775-1818)
Three volumes bound in one. Thick 12mo (19.5 cm), page edges untrimmed, rebound in modern quarter goatskin and marbled boards, gilt-lettered leather spine label. new endpapers, binder's blanks front and rear and before the other two title leaves. pp [2], (viii), 262.; (2), 158 ; [2], 198. With the original printed spine labels tipped in. Page edges yellowed; two old catalogue descriptions tipped in at front fly leaf (one calling it "the complete text"), scattered foxing; else fine. Old bookplate of George Fales Baker, M.D., laid in (skull with snake coming out an eye socket, burning oil lamp, open book, Latin motto). Dr. Baker, 1863-1929, was a wealthy Philadelphia financier. Very scarce early printing (unexpurgated?) of Lewis's famous eroto-Gothic novel, perhaps the most famous of all Gothic novels. Not in OCLC, the British Library, or COPAC. THE MONK, a sensation from its first publication in 1796, was written in ten weeks when the author was only 19. It had admirers as disparate as Sir Walter Scott and the Marquis de Sade. However, many others considered it obscene, blasphemous and "a curst book- full of every Thing that shd not be anywhere" (Hester Lynch Thrale Piozzi). And indeed, even to a modern reader, the work is remarkably bold in its eroticism and impiety. To avoid legal action, and to appease his heartsick father, Lewis expunged most of the offending passages beginning with the fourth edition of 1798. The present copy has the same pagination as the Paris: Theophilus Barrois, 1807, edition, which was illustrated (though not all copies were issued with the plates … [Click Below for Full Description]

MARSHALL, John
Philadelphia: C. P. Wayne, 1807. unbound. Map. Uncolored engraving. Sheet measures 17.25 x 10.75". This wonderful 1807 Revolutionary War - era map presents the regions of the most important operations of the Southern Armies. Extending north from Savannah, it covers South Carolina, North Carolina and parts of Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay. After suffering losses in the north, the British shifted their attention to the Southern Colonies and seized Savannah and Charleston by 1779. They would control these until the end of the war. To contextualize the armies' paths, the map shows several topographical elements. The map was part of the rare 1807 atlas volume belonging to Chief Justice John Marshall's seminal six volume biography of Washington. In good condition with minor wear along original folds. John James Marshall (1755--1835) was the fourth Chief Justice of the United States. A renowned Federalist, Marshall's admiration for George Washington led him to publish "The Life of Washington," a five-volume biography of the famed President and general. In 1832, he produced a revised and condensed two-volume edition with hand-colored maps. This map attests both to Marshall's influential work and to the skill of the general it honors.

Volume I treats the quadrupeds and birds, Volume II reptiles, fish, insects, and shellfish. Volume III covers plants and minerals. The b&w aquatints, by William Daniell (1769-1837), an important British landscape and marine painter and engraver, are especially interesting for their full frontal realism, if distorted scale, against dramatic backgrounds. BROOKSHAW, After George (1751-1823)
[London]: G. Brookshaw, 1807. Aquatint engraving, with some stipple, printed in colours and finished by hand. In good condition. A fine image from Brookshaw's masterpiece: 'Pomona Britannica; or, A Collection of the Most Esteemed Fruits'. George Brookshaw's 'Pomona Britannica' is the finest work on fruit and flowers ever produced. Its breathtaking images display a level of technical virtuosity and beauty that distinguish this magnificent work as a true work of art. As a retired cabinetmaker, Brookshaw produced his seminal botanical study late in his career, at first publishing it in parts and then as a complete edition in 1812. The fact that this outstanding work took ten years to complete is evident in the quality of its images and the care with which Brookshaw executed each individual picture. 'Pomona Britannica' was produced as a visual record of the best available varieties of fruit in an attempt to encourage gardeners to experiment with growing fruit, and illustrates examples found in the Royal gardens at Hampton Court, Kensington Gardens, and the private gardens of the Prince of Wales in Blackheath. 'Pomona Britannica' differs from other botanical works in its dark aquatinted backgrounds and its stylized compositions. By using aquatint to create a contrasting background, Brookshaw manages to produce a truly dramatic effect. His use of stylized composition distinguishes his pictures from the dry scientific illustrations found in other botanical studies and creates an exceptionally beautiful visual experience. Focusing on the strategic are on the west bank of the Hudson River, the map indicates the changing positions of the American and British armies from October 12 to 28, 1776 between Frog's Point to Croton River to eventually join the Battle of White Plains. The British army forced Washington and his troops first across the Hudson, or North River, and then further into New Jersey: a string of seeming victories that would eventually lead to Washington's famous crossing of the Delaware at Valley Forge and his surprise attack in the Battle of Trenton. To contextualize the armies' paths, the map shows rivers, roads, and topographical elements.

MARSHALL, John
Philadelphia: C. P. Wayne, 1807. unbound. Map. Uncolored engraving. Sheet measures 10.5 x 15.75" This scarce 1807 Revolutionary War - era map of Boston presents the theater of war during the Siege of Boston and the Battle of Bunker Hill. It covers the city and harbor of Boston, as well as the neighboring Charleston, Brookline, Cambridge, Medford, Dorchester, and Roxbury. When the Colonial troops learned that the British planned to fortify the surrounding hills and gain control of Boston Harbor, colonial forces were send in to occupy Bunker Hill and Breed's Hill. The British attacked and eventually forced the colonists to retreat. Although a tactical victory for the British, the battle resulted in heavy casualties which forced them to retreat and later regroup for the subsequent New York and New Jersey campaign. To contextualize the armies' paths, the map shows rivers, roads, and topographical elements. The map was part of the rare 1807 atlas volume belonging to Chief Justice John Marshall's seminal six volume biography of Washington. In good condition with minor wear along original folds. Isaac D'Israeli
London-John Murray, 1807. Book. Two fifth editionvolumes of D'Israeli's Curiosities of Literature-his most popular work. Isaac D'Israeli (1766 1848) was a British writer, scholar and man of letters. He is best known for his essays, his associations with other men of letters, and as the father of British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli. The work contained a myriad of anecdotes about historical persons and events, unusual books, and the habits of book-collectors. The work was very popular and sold widely in the 19th century, reaching its eleventh edition (the last to be revised by the author) in 1839. Condition: In half-calf bindings. Externally sound with slight rubbing and some wear to the extremities. Internally firmly bound with bright and clean pages throughout, save for some browning. Loss to title pages of both volumes probably to excise an ownership signature. Bookplate to front pastedowns. Overall: GOOD. Good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

All three volumes about very good in contemporary brown polished calf with some gilt tooling. Raised bands, marbled endpapers, and marbled edges. Attractive early 20th century collector's bookplate on front paste-down of each volume. Shows some general signs of age, including some scuffing to the front board of volume I, some wear to the outer joints (inner hinges are strong), and leather is a bit dry in a few spots. Internally, each volume is crisp, bright, and clean. A few markings (mostly pencil) to front blank pages (NOT ex-library) Despite some mild wear, really a lovely surviving set in what would have been an expensive contemporary binding.
