AIKIN, Arthur & AIKIN, Charles Rochemont
John and Arthur Arch, et al, 1807. FIRST EDITION With 15 engraved plates. Full calf, rebacked with the original spine laid down, covers and spine slightly worn; text in excellent condition with only a few light spots on first title. Bookplates of High Legh Library and Arnold Thackray in each volume. First edition. According to the preface, the author's intention was to give a "faithful and sufficiently detailed description of all the important facts hitherto discovered in the sciences of chemistry and mineralogy, enlarging more particularly on those parts which are of particular interest to the manufacturer and practical chemist." Indeed, according to Duveen, the work "was published at an interesting period, and gives a very full account of the state of chemistry at the beginning of the 19th century." Included are descriptions of processes such as the smelting of copper, iron and tin, as well as the making of vitriol, salt, and other substances derived from the author's own experiments. Many of the great chemists throughout history are cited, especially with respect to the language they used to describe various material and procedures, including Bergman, Scheele, Black, Priestley, Kirwan, and many more. Arthur Aikin (1773-1854) was an English chemist, mineralogist and scientific writer who studied under Joseph Priestley. He was one of the founders of the Geological Society of London in 1807 and was its honorary secretary in 1812-1817. His brother Charles (1775-1847) was a physician and a member of the Royal College of Surgeons. n n

Carter, Elizabeth
London: Printed for F.C. and J. Rivington, 1807 First edition. Contemporary calf, gilt decorated flat spine, gilt borders on both covers, edges sprinkledred. . Quarto. Engraved frontispiece. Front joint cracked, but sound, back joint just starting. Binding extremities rubbed, endpapers and plate lightly foxed, offsetting from portrait onto title-page. Minor foxing otherwise. Nineteenth-century armorial bookplate. A very good copy overall. Elizabeth Carter (1717-1806) was, to quote Priscilla Dorr in Schleuter's Encyclopedia of British Women Writers, "the most learned lady in England during the eighteenth century." She was one of the most famous members of the Blue Stocking Circle, which also included Catherine Talbot, Elizabeth Vesey, Elizabeth Montagu, Hester Chapone, and Hannah More. Despite an early learning disability and "with a persistence that won the praise of V. Woolf in A Room of One's Own," (as Margaret Drabble reminds us in the Oxford Companion to English Literature) she learned Latin, Greek, and Hebrew in childhood with her brothers, and later studied French, Italian, German, Portuguese, and Arabic. She was a friend of Samuel Johnson, who thought her one of the best Greek scholars he had known, and invited her to contribute to The Rambler. She made a number of translations, of which her Epictetus is the masterpiece.

[MANUSCRIT]

Broadside ballad. Barrett, C.F.
[London]: A. Neil, 448, Strand, [1807]. Single sheet, 11 x 9 1/4 ins. Woodcut, colored (by a later hand?). In fine condition. Broadside ballad or song entitled 'The stylish wedding; or, matrimonial harmony'. Written by C.F.Barrett the verses are based on the true story of a wedding which took place in Stroud, Gloucestershire and ended in a fight between the bridegroom's daughter and the bride. Published October 1807 by A Neil, the broadside includes a woodcut engraving depicting the wedding reception before the fight broke out.'Sweetheart ballads' were particularly popular with Londoners. Printed by small back street printers primarily based in the Seven Dials area of London the ballads were sold by ballad hawkers trading on London's streets. The ballad writers would receive little reward from the printers for their efforts, reportedly sometimes only a few pints of ale.- See more at: http://collections.museumoflondon.org.uk/

Heriot, George
London: Printed for Richard Phillips, 1807. xii,602pp. plus twenty-seven plates (some folding) and a handcolored folding map. Thick quarto. Antique-style three-quarter calf and marbled boards, gilt leather label. Occasional offsetting from plates, as usual; some light age toning, titlepage discolored, else text generally quite clean. One plate with small closed tear. Very good. Heriot travelled a good deal through Canada from 1800 to 1816 as deputy postmaster general of British North America. He recorded his travels in illustration as well as text, as represented by the fine plates in the present work, and was considered one of the finest watercolorists of his day. The plates depict the Azores and include three views of Quebec; one each of St. Paul's Bay, Jeune Lorete, the Ruins of Chateau Richer, River Etchemin, and Lake St. Charles; two views each of Niagara Falls, the St. Lawrence, the Fall of Montmorenci, and the Fall of La Puce; one each of Fort Niagara, Montreal, Grand Chaudiere on the Outaouais River, and the Bridge on the Jacques Cartier; and illustrations of Indian costume, an Indian encampment, and two of French Canadian dancing. The text offers a fine contemporary account of the Loyalist settlements in Canada and contains important material on the cod fisheries, fur trade, and native Indians, with a printing of Father Rasle's vocabulary of the Algonquian language. "Illustrated books on North America are curiously few in the period with which we deal. By far the most interesting is Heriot's TRAVELS THROUGH THE CANADAS..." - Prideaux. HILL 801.
