CARR, Sir John.
London: for J. Johnson, 1807. Octavo (210 x 122 mm). Contemporary mottled calf (binder's blanks watermarked 1815), smooth spine gilt-ruled in compartments, title gilt to second, gilt octofoils containing floral devices against a ground of massed dots to the rest, rolled border gilt to sides, edges sprinkled blue. Contemporary armorial bookplate of one Sarah Phillott to front pastedown; recent bookplate of Lancashire chemist and bibliophile Robert J. Hayhurst to front free endpaper. Spine sunned to tan, light rubbing to extremities, a few faint score-marks to front board, trivial pale marking to rear, occasional mild foxing or browning, mainly to leaves facing plates. A very good copy. Aquatint frontispiece with sepia wash and 11 similar plates, all from the author's own sketches. First octavo edition, the second overall, of Carr's first book, originally published in 1803. Carr (1772-1832) gave up a legal career for health reasons and decided to tour the continent. His travel accounts were highly popular in their day and sold well, though their light style and even their profitability were the object of mockery by Edward Dubois and Sir Walter Scott; Lord Byron, who met Carr in Cadiz, "refers to him in some suppressed stanzas of canto 1 of Childe Harolde as 'Green Erin's knight and Europe's wandering star'" (ODNB). He was knighted by the Duke of Bedford, then viceroy of Ireland, following the publication of The Stranger in Ireland (1806). Abbey speculates that the plates in The Stranger in France are by William Daniell. Abbey, Travel 82 for the first edition. [Attributes: Fir … [Click Below for Full Description]

William Cobbett
William Phillips, London, 1807. 1st Edition . No Binding. Good. First edition. [iii], iv-viii, 9-66, 69-76, 67-68, 77-78p. Pages 67-68 have been mis-bound out of sequence. Missing blank leaf (pages 79-80) and the list of subscribers to the rear (pages 81-88). Priced accordingly. This is a first edition of the first report issued by the African Institution. There is a list of the committee members on pages vii-viii, which contains notable members such as William Wilberforce, Thomas Clarkson, Zachary Macaulay and Henry Brougham. The African Institution was set up after the 1807 Slave Trade Act, which abolished the slave trade in the British Empire, but not slavery itself, which was abolished in 1833. The institution "was a semiofficial watchdog or organization created to monitor enforcement of the new abolition laws. A moderate lobbying group, it utilized its members' personal connections and influence on high-level figures in Parliament and the British navy to ensure full compliance with the hard-won legislation...[It] played a vital role in altering the attitudes toward slavery of both the British politicians and the British public in the crucial decades of the early-nineteenth centry." - The Historical Encyclopedia of World Slavery. Condition: Disbound. A remarkably clean copy. Pencil mark to the title page. Stab holes to the gutter. Light scattered foxing to the title page. Occasional spot. Slight browning to the top edge.

London: printed for J. Hatchard; Mess. F.C. and J. Rivington; and J. Asperne, 1807. 8vo., xlii + (2) + 382pp., including the half-title and errata leaf, old tear in one text leaf (but no loss of surface), well bound fairly recently in cloth-backed marbled boards, black spine label gilt lettered, entirely uncut. A very good copy indeed. First edition. John Weyland (1774-1854), known to biographical history simply as a 'writer on the poor laws', was actually a J.P. for four southern counties, a member of the Board of Agriculture and a Fellow of the Royal Society. The present so-called 'short inquiry>' is in fact a substantial treatise on the poor laws largely from a rural perspective (Weyland suggests that it complements Colquhoun's parallel Treatise on Indigence> which largely examined the state of the urban poor). Williams (loc. cit.) succinctly observes that Weyland's is a 'lengthy argument in defence of the poor laws, as an encouragement to population'. As M.C. Curthoys puts it in ODNB, 'Weyland is now remembered as a critic of Malthusian population theory. He was concerned to uphold the existing social order in the countryside, and was an outspoken defender of the existing system of poor relief.' [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Gall, Franz Joseph -
München, 1807, kl.-8°, (16) pp., in feinem Pappband. Erstdruck! Seltener separat Abdruck des anonym im "Der neue Teutsche Merkur" (1807, 2Bd., pp. 228 - 239) erschienen aufsatz! "Doktor Gall in München. [Click Below for Full Description]

Otsuki, Gentaku, and Hiroyuki Shimura: [Japanese Manuscript]
[Japan], 1807. Approximately 842pp., illustrated with a three-page map of the return journey and eighty-eight hand-colored drawings in pen and ink (five double-page). Fifteen volumes (of sixteen, lacking volume fourteen). Japanese language, on rice paper. Original blue wrappers, paper labels. Some wear and rubbing to covers. Very good. An early Japanese manuscript set of the KANKAI IBUN, the extraordinary tale of Japanese shipwrecked sailors from the Wakimiya-maru, and their journey from 1792 to 1804, documenting their time in the Aleutians and in Siberia and their journey to the Court of the Tsar in St Petersburg. Rescued by agents of the Russian American Company, the sailors travelled in Russian Asia, and some of them were brought to St. Petersburg and the court of the Tsar. They were returned to Japan by the voyage of Krusenstern in 1803-6, and this manuscript also gives an important account of that voyage. In December 1793 the ship Vakamia-Maru sailed from Edo, Japan, with a cargo of wood and rice, and a crew of seventeen. A storm in the Pacific damaged the ship and eventually wrecked the crew in the Aleutian Islands. All but one of the crew managed to survive over a ten month period, when they were found by the agents of the Russian American Company and taken to Okhotsk. The Japanese sailors spent eight years in Irkutsk, before four of them went on to Saint Petersburg. There they came to the attention of the Tsar Alexander I, and visited his court. At that time Japan was still closed to Russia and most other European countries, and the Japanese sailors would hav … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Anonymous, Craniologie (1807). This seems to be one of the first detailed accounts of Gall's doctrine and is translated from the German. An earlier one, Anonymous, Exposition (1803), used the term "la doctrine physionomique de Gail," as in Anonymous, Some Account (1807). The authors could not be traced." "Although Gall's name is universally associated with "phrenology," he did not, in fact, invent the term or ever use it, or the populär phrase, "phrenology, or the doctrine of the mind." He preferred to call his doctrine "functions of the brain" or "brain physiology." However, the first term he used was Schädellehre ("craniology"), which he eventually abandoned, because it suggested that his System was concerned primarily with the cranium and only secondarily with functions of the brain that it contained, whereas the reverse was the case. "Craniology" and "craniologie," however, persisted well into the nineteenth Century. Gall's objection to "doctrine of the mind" or "mental Science," and their Greek equivalent, "phrenology," was because of his desire not to equate the functions of the brain solely with mind. This seems to have been a small objection, and without doubt "phrenology" was the best available, for it closely expressed his basic precept. Why then did he reject it? The simple answer seems to be that "phrenology" was made populär by Spurzheim and applied to his modification of the ori … [Click Below for Full Description]
