Marshall, John
Philadelphia: C. P. Wayne, 1807. unbound. Map. Uncolored engraving. Sheet measures 10.75 x 9.5".This scarce 1807 Revolutionary War-era map covers the regions of Maine, New Hampshire, New York, and Canada, depicting the scene of operations of the Northern Army. In particular, it highlights the wilderness route General Benedict Arnold took on his second expedition to attack Quebec City. The important Hudson Valley theater of war is also represented, including the strategic location of Fort Ticonderoga, which changed hands several times during the war. Other important scenes of battle, including Bennington, Saratoga, Still Water, Crown Point, Montreal, and Quebec are also identified. Topographical elements help to contextualize the armies' paths and describe the space between important locations such as Cape Ann, Lake Champlain, Lake George, the Connecticut River, St. Lawrence River, Kennebeck River, and Lake St. Peter. The map was part of the rare 1807 atlas volume belonging to Chief Justice John Marshall's seminal six volume biography of Washington. In good condition with minor wear along original folds. John James Marshall (1755--1835) was the fourth Chief Justice of the United States. A renowned Federalist, Marshall's admiration for George Washington led him to publish "The Life of Washington," a five-volume biography of the famed President and general. In 1832, he produced a revised and condensed two-volume edition with hand-colored maps. This map attests both to Marshall's influential work and to the skill of the general it honors.

London: Laurie & Whittle, 1807. 1ff. Framed engraved writing sheet with a mirror over the blank area in the center usually reserved for examples of penmanship. The mirror is near-contemporary to the writing sheet, and together they create an attractive piece that perhaps could have served as decoration in a child's room. The ten hand-colored illustrations bordering the mirror depict the pantomime of Harlequin and Mother Goose or, the Golden Egg, featuring the characters of the Harlequinade. This popular and very successful comic pantomime by Thomas John Dibdin debuted in London in December, 1806, with famed comic actor Joseph Grimaldi in the role of the clown. The writing sheet is entirely intact and unmarked: the silvering of the mirror was painted onto the inside of the frame glass and is not adhered to the paper. The date printed at the bottom of the sheet is March 25, 1807, and the print is numbered 88 in the lower left corner. These ornamented writing sheets also known as writing blanks, "school pieces," or "Christmas pieces," were used to encourage good penmanship in children. The blank space was filled in with a sampler of a child's best penmanship, and the completed page was often given as a gift from children to their parents. Laurie & Whittle were best known as London publishers of maps and atlases, but the firm also published prints and some juvenile items. Slight toning to the paper, else fine. This writing sheet is a remarkable survival and an unusual, creative presentation of a piece of juvenile ephemera. In a black and gold frame, which shows some rubbing to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Issued in response to the opening of a 'Free School' by the London Society For the Promotion of Christianity Amongst the Jews. This was first of the notices and is milder it seems to have been issued before the school actually opened and later on Rabbi Hirschell forbade under threat of excommunication parents sending their children to the school and it was one of the boosts to the establishment of the 'The Jews Free School'"During 1807 the missionaries established their first free school for children of both sexes. Apart from teaching the children reading, writing and arithmetic, they also provided them with a hot meal each lunchtime and a complete set of clothing. Contemporary mottled calf (binder's blanks watermarked 1815), smooth spine gilt-ruled in compartments, title gilt to second, gilt octofoils containing floral devices against a ground of massed dots to the rest, rolled border gilt to sides, edges sprinkled blue. Contemporary armorial bookplate of one Sarah Phillott to front pastedown; recent bookplate of Lancashire chemist and bibliophile Robert J. Hayhurst to front free endpaper. Spine sunned to tan, light rubbing to extremities, a few faint score-marks to front board, trivial pale marking to rear, occasional mild foxing or browning, mainly to leaves facing plates. A very good copy. Aquatint frontispiece with sepia wash and 11 similar plates, all from the author's own sketches. First octavo edition, the second overall, of Carr's first book, originally published in 1803. Carr (1772-1832) gave up a legal career for health reasons and decided to tour the continent. His travel accounts were highly popular in their day and sold well, though their light style and even their profitability were the object of mockery by Edward Dubois and Sir Walter Scott; Lord Byron, who met Carr in Cadiz, "refers to him in some suppressed stanzas of canto 1 of Childe Harolde as 'Green Erin's knight and Europe's wandering star'" (ODNB). He was knighted by the Duke of Bedford, then viceroy of Ireland, following the publication of The Stranger in Ireland (1806). Abbey speculates that the plates in The Stranger in France are by William Daniell. Abbey, Travel 82 for the first edition. [Attributes: Fir … [Click Below for Full Description]
