Chrysanthos, Metropolitan of Durazzo, Brusa, and Smyrna.
Vienna, Johanna Schrämbl, 1807. Folio (215 x 328 mm). (4), 104 pp. With engraved frontispiece and 51 leaves of plates (8 double-page-sized or folded). Near-contemporary red half morocco with gilt rules and marbled covers, spine richly gilt (loss of label). Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Rare description of the Holy City of Jerusalem and of the whole of Palestine; a reissue (with changed title) of the edition published by Josef Baumeister in Vienna in 1787. Previous editions had appeared in Venice in 1728, then in 1749 and 1781, while the 1787 edition boasted "a new text and different iconography" (Staikos). This latter edition is here reproduced largely unchanged save for bringing the name of the Patriarch of Jerusalem up to date (from Abraham to Anthimus), as well as that of the editor, Apostolas Boras, on the title page. "The engraving of the Patriarch on his throne is unchanged except for the name; it is signed (in Greek): 'engraved by Schindelmayer in Vienna' [.] A large-sized, impressive book" (Staikos). "A portrait of the Patriarch [Anthimus] forms the frontispiece; also, there is an illustration of the Palace of David, and a plan of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, though the view of its cross-section is quite haphazard [.] The author expands on Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Hebron, and the sacred sites of Galilee. The text is apparently more or less that of the Venice 1728 edition; apart from that, it is generously interspersed with highly appealing illustrations in the true taste of modern Greece" (cf. Tobler 135). The Viennese publisher and printer Franz Anton Schräm … [Click Below for Full Description]

It is the first translation of the "Principle on Population" into any language, and it influenced German politics tremendously. The first edition was printed anonymously in London in 1798, and in 1803 the second edition, which, also according to Malthus himself, can be said to constitute a new work, appeared; -the great quarto edition from 1803 is thoroughly revised and much enlarged, the title has been changed and Malthus' name appears on the title-page for the first time, it is on this edition that all the preceding editions are based, and in consequence also the early translations. MARSHALL, John
Philadelphia: C. P. Wayne, 1807. unbound. Map. Uncolored engraving. Sheet measures 10.75 x 9.5" Map. Uncolored engraving. Sheet measures 10.75 x 9.5". This lovely 1807 Revolutionary War- era map depicts the Siege of Yorktown, the final campaign in the American Revolutionary War. Under the command of Comte de Rochambeau and George Washington, the Americans attacked the troops of General Cornwallis, who occupied York and Gloucester. The battle was the last major confrontation in the War and resulted in a decisive Franco-American victory with the British surrendering on October 19, 1781. Issued approximately 25 years later, this map details the locations of colonial militias, artilleries, and important leaders, all encircling a central field %u201Cwhere the British laid down their Arms.%u201D The map was part of the rare 1807 atlas volume belonging to Chief Justice John Marshall's seminal six volume biography of Washington. In good condition with minor wear along original folds. John James Marshall (1755--1835) was the fourth Chief Justice of the United States. A renowned Federalist, Marshall's admiration for George Washington led him to publish "The Life of Washington," a five-volume biography of the famed President and general. In 1832, he produced a revised and condensed two-volume edition with hand-colored maps. This map attests both to Marshall's influential work and to the skill of the general it honors.

Paris unter Napoleon - Miller, J. F.:
Reutlingen, Mäcken, 1807. - 8°. 176 SS. Pappband d.

Brunet IV, 1029.

MARSHALL, John
Philadelphia: C. P. Wayne, 1807. unbound. Map. Uncolored engraving. Sheet measures 17.25 x 10". This scarce 1807 Revolutionary War-era map extends from Harlem in Manhattan, New York City north as far as Croton-on-Hudson. Focusing on the strategic are on the west bank of the Hudson River, the map indicates the changing positions of the American and British armies from October 12 to 28, 1776 between Frog's Point to Croton River to eventually join the Battle of White Plains. The British army forced Washington and his troops first across the Hudson, or North River, and then further into New Jersey: a string of seeming victories that would eventually lead to Washington's famous crossing of the Delaware at Valley Forge and his surprise attack in the Battle of Trenton. To contextualize the armies' paths, the map shows rivers, roads, and topographical elements. The map was part of the rare 1807 atlas volume belonging to Chief Justice John Marshall's seminal six volume biography of Washington.
