Kawamura, Bunpo [illustrated by]
Yanagihara Kihei ; Yoshida Shinbei, Naniwa [Osaka] ; Koto [Kyoto], 1807. An album of 30 double-page woodblock prints of simple paintings of Chinese figures, plants, and landscapes, by famous Kyoto-based artist Kawamura Bunpo (1779-1821). This book, including both colour and black and white prints, is volume one of a three volume set, however volumes two and three were published several years later. Original Japanese binding, worn, a few stains and wormholes, remains of sticker removal to upper wrapper. TANNER, Johann Jakob].
, . . Schmitt 259 (uncoloured and lacking 1 plate), cf. 257; cf. Engelmann, Biblbiotheca geographica, p. 827 (Andenken an den Rhein); not in GVK; KVK/WorldCat; for Tanner: Thieme & Becker XXXII, pp. 432-433. Extremely rare series of magnificent aquatint Rhine views in gorgeous publisher's hand-colouring. The views are altered copies of the 24 views published in Tanner's earlier series Andenken an den Rhein, printed from new plates. While the original series was wholly engraved by and after drawings of the draughtsman and engraver Johann Jakob Tanner the younger (1807-1862), he had some help for present series by other artists and engravers. While the work itself is already very scarce, we couldn't locate any other copy in publisher's hand-colouring, but the colouring is very similar to that in other series published by Victor von Zabern, and Engelmann mentions the contemporary availability of coloured copies of Tanner's previous series. This gorgeous colouring, which nearly turns the prints into paintings, gives a lively and romantic idea of the greatness of the beautiful and mysterious Rhine landscape that has played such a crucial role in German history and literature. The album was undoubtedly aimed at the increasing number of wealthy tourists for whom the romance of the Rhine was a powerful attraction. In very good condition. With the binding rebacked, some faint soiling on the front board, and some slight wear on the original backstrip. Magnificent series of Rhine views.

Marshall, John
Philadelphia, 1807. Five text volumes plus atlas. Portrait frontispiece in first volume. Thick octavo text volumes, small folio atlas. Recent half calf and marbled boards, leather labels. A presentation copy of Marshall's classic biography of Washington, given by Daniel Webster to his law mentor, Thomas W. Thompson. First issue of the text, save for the second volume, which is dated 1805 and thus the second issue. "After the able, accurate and comprehensive work of Chief Justice Marshall, it would be presumptuous to attempt a historical biography of Washington" - Jared Sparks. Later American editions omitted the history of the colonies, which is the subject of the first volume. Daniel Webster's presentation inscription on the recto of the frontispiece portrait reads, "Presented to Mr. Thomas W. Thompson Danl Webster Salisbury 1804." He has also signed the titlepage of the first volume. After graduating from Dartmouth in 1801, Webster returned to his hometown of Salisbury, New Hampshire to study law under Thompson. Thompson was admitted to the bar in 1791 and practiced law in Salisbury until 1810, at which time he moved to the capital of Concord to serve as a Congressman and later Senator from New Hampshire. Webster was easily his most notable apprentice. Thompson, though a Harvard man himself, would also serve as a trustee of Dartmouth College from the time he began to tutor Webster until 1821. A wonderful association copy, linking Marshall, Washington, and one of the foremost American lawyers and politicians of the next generation of American leaders. VIGNON (Pierre.) - KERSAINT (Armand-Guy.) - ÉGLISE DE LA MADELEINE
1 ) VIGNON (Pierre.) [Click Below for Full Description]

Berthier, Jean-Baptiste; Nicolas-Antoine Sanson; François d'Houdan; et al.
Large atlas of Versailles and the surrounding towns, with twelve maps total including one map depicting the overall area covered in the atlas, and eleven more detailed maps covering the towns and immediate surroundings of Mantes, Poissy, St. Denis, Crépieres, Versailles, Paris, Montfor l'Amaury, Chevreuse, Sceaux, Rambouillet, Arpajon, and Corbeil. Very minor scattered soiling or toning, very fine condition. Elephant folio. Original full calf binding with handwritten label affixed to front cover. Some minor scattered soiling and abrasions, minor wear consistent with age. Paris (Dépôt de la Guerre) n.d. (circa 1807). This suite of maps was commissioned by Louis XV to represent his hunting territories around Versailles, and stemmed from his obsession with hunting coupled with a decision to copy an old map of the Duchy of Rambouillet. The maps are the result of three surveys of the land conducted between 1764 and 1773. The first nine maps, including the overview, were completed in the late 18th century under the reign of Louis XVI, but the work was put on hold at the time of the Revolution, when the credits allocated for completing the work were taken away by the National Convention. The last four maps were not completed until 1807, after Napoléon became Emperor. These maps are notable for their precision and the multitude of details represented, including roads, land use features, such as plowing, meadows, vegetable crops, barns, and parks, and hydrography. For his work on these maps, Berthier was granted nobility status. A spectacular and scarce volume of beautiful maps; as … [Click Below for Full Description]
