        The Plays.

London: for John Stockdale,, 1807. From the corrected text of Johnson and Steevens. 6 volumes, quarto (320 x 250 mm). Contemporary diced russia, richly gilt spines, three-line gilt border on sides enclosing a broad floriate roll tooled border, pretty gilt roll tool turn-ins, marbled endpapers and edges. 22 copperplates engraved by James Heath after Stothard (16), William Hamilton (4) and Henry Fuseli (2). Armorial bookplates of J. P. Brown Westhead (1807-1877), MP and deputy chairman of the London and North Western Railway and the Buenos Aries Great Southern Railway Company (listed in the Journal of the Society of Arts for February 1856). Front joint of volume VI cracked but sound, covers of volume III rather mottled, a few lights abrasions, some foxing and browning in volume II but withal an excellent set, the russia bindings - notoriously fragile - in unusually good condition. First Heath edition in book form. originally issued in parts by Robinson between 1802 and 1804. The London-born son of a bookbinder, James Heath (1757-1834) became one of the most widely-employed engravers of the age, producing illustrations for such celebrated works as Lavater's Essays on Physiognomy (1789), Vancouver's A voyage of discovery to the north Pacific Ocean and round the world (1798), Bruce's Travels (1790) and the frontispiece portrait to Boswell's Life of Johnson (1790). This handsome edition - with engravings after works by Thomas Stothard, William Hamilton and Henry Fuseli, and letterpress by the distinguished printer Thomas Bensley - is a substantial demonstration of his huge popularity. His engravings of the two brooding Fuseli plates for Macbeth are the standout illustrations. "Like the great majority of illustrated editions from the half-century after [Bell's edition], Heath's Shakespeare did not claim any textul revision, instead using the Johnson-Steevens text. Its main appeal was its format - six large quarto volumes, clearly designed to appeal not to the lower economic groups but to those who might justifiably be called the upper middling sort, who had the money to purchase these expensive volumes, space to display them and leisure to read them... [eleven of the plays are illustrated] the only tragedy being Macbeth and the only history King John. Those with illustrations are A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Taming of the Shrew, Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Comedy of Errors, Twelfth Night, Love's Labour's Lost, The Merchant of Venice, The Tempest and The Winter's Tale. Some are remarkable as much for the moment shown as for their visual or interpretive quality" (Stuart Sillars, The Illustrated Shakespeare 1709-1875, Cambridge 2008, p.165). A superb Regency edition in a lovely period binding, standing testimony to the engraver's popularity in being lettered "Heath's Shakespeare".

First edition and a very pretty complete set of this rare and important publication. "Founded in 1807 by Berthollet and Laplace, the Société d'Arcueil was named after the suburb of Paris where they lived. Other members of this small group were Arago, Bérard, Biot, Chaptal, De Candolle, Collet-Descotils, Dulong, Gay-Lussac, Humboldt, Malus, and Thénard. The society met biweekly and was visited by Berzelius, Davy, Wollaston, and other famous chemists. These memoirs contain many papers of great scientific importance, notably Gay- Lussac's Sur la combinaison des substances gazeuses (Vol. II, pp. 207-234), which enunciates the law named after him. One of Dulong's memoirs describes his discovery of nitrogen trichloride, an unstable liquid that exploded, costing him an eye and three fingers. An important memoir by Malus contains the discovery of the polarization of light by reflection."-Neville, I, p. 42. Pretty sets of this book are distinctly uncommon today.

A pieni margini, in barbe. (Giampiero Brunelli in D.B.I., LXXVI, 2012). Italiano [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Oxford Almanack for the Year of our Lord God MDCCCVIII

1807 - A scarce broadside almanac and one dominated by a Turner panoramic view of the university town from the far side of the river. Measuring 54 by 48 cm. About two-thirds of the broadside is taken up with the engraving. Below the engraving is the calendar. In between is the title in a center box, and to its sides are boxes with one, listing the kings of England, the other, the then current officers of the university. No copies found anywhere. The British Library has a similar broadside almanack for 1806, depicting Exeter College and executed by Turner and Basire, but not this year nor this panoramic scene. Also no copy showing up in a search of the Bodleian. Backed by linen, as we believe it might have been originally so issued. Light soiling, but mainly an appealing patina from the age toning.

(Lettera Autografo) Stima quadro di Guido Reni da Jacopo Alessandro Calvi 1807

li 6 Ottobre 1807.

First Edition. Very good antiquarian condition. 8vo; 27 pp. 85 lots of paintings, all priced in contemporary manuscript, plus unpriced lots (108) of scientific instruments. Recent sympathetic wrappers. Title-page has three stains which penetrate blank verso, on which appear two tax stamps; some foxing; last page soiled. Posthumous sale of the small but choice collection of Dutch and Flemish paintings assembled by Frans Emmanuel Ertborn (1716-1791), a wealthy Antwerp businessman who was the first Director of the Prussian East India Company (Emden). Although this collection featured a number of important paintings, it remains surprisingly unknown, and is virtually absent from all reference works consulted by us. It seems that van Ertborn's fame as a collector has been completely eclipsed by the his grandson, Florent van Ertborn, whose museum of "primitive" Flemish paintings was given to the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Antwerp. In the present sale lot 1 was the superb Rubens painting of Saint Walburga and the Miracle of the Ship (now Museum der Bildenden Kuenste, Leipzig). Lot 3 was Rubens' portrait of St James the Minor now at the Museo del Prado. Lot 42 of the sale ("Still Life in an Architectural Setting") by Jan Fyt and Erasmus Quellinus, the Younger is now at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston (Acc. 50.2728). But the highest price of all was paid for lot 17 (1,410 fl.), a mountainous landscape by Nicolaues Pieterszoon Berchem that has not yet been located ("Un paysage montagneus; sur le premier plan deux paysans conduisent un trompeau de moutons et de vaches; un peu en arriere l'on voit d'autres bestiaux. OCLC finds only the KMSKA copy, but to this census we add examples at Frick and Getty. Provenance: on final page the contemporary ownership inscription of "Mr. Spruijt" (i.e. Charles Joseph Francois Spruyt, the art dealer, painter, and curator for Prince Auguste d'Arenburg); the Getty Provenance Index lists 1,402 puchases by Spruyt from 1784-1810, including the two Rembrandts referenced by Hofstede de Groot (471c and 866) and Maes (Hofstede de Groot 560).
