A reply to the Essay on Population> by the Rev. T.R. Malthus. In a series of letters. To which are added, extracts from the Essay>; with notes.

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme. 1807. 8vo., iv + 40 + 43 - 378pp. (pp. 41-42 absent as is correct), all endpapers rather foxed and with minor occasional foxing in the text, contemporary or slightly later half calf over marbled boards, spine with raised bands, gilt lines and label. A good copy. First edition. Keynes 4. Ireland p.49. Kress B.5198. Goldsmiths 19371. Mattioli 1596. Not in Einaudi. This was the young Hazlitt's attack on Malthus's Essay on the principle of population>. 'Malthus's theory was based on self-interest, so in attacking it Hazlitt was applying the principles of his own Essay* on disinterestedness to the political sphere.' [Jonathan Bate in ODNB]. 'Hazlitt's spirited Reply to Malthus> consists of five Letters, the last of which is much the longest. The first three shorter Letters had been published on March 14 and May 16, 1807, in Cobbett's Political Register>, and the rest of the material was added in the book, which was announced for publication in the Edinburgh Review> for October 1807. The book was probably a failure at the time, though it was used in later publications both by Godwin and de Quincey, much to Hazlitt's annoyance (Life>, pp.321, 364). Hazlitt himself reprinted some extracts from it in his Political Essays>, published in 1819, and there remarked in a footnote (p.424): 'The above article is taken from a Reply to Mr Malthus, one of my very early Essays, the style of which is, I confess, a little exuberant, but of the arguments I see no reason to be ashamed'. The volume is very uncommon at the present time.' [Geoffrey Keynes, Bibliography>, 2nd ed. 1981, p.7]. * i.e. An essay on the principles of human action>, 1805.

POLAND – MANUSCRIPT MAP: [UNTITLED MANUSCRIPT MAP OF CENTRAL POLAND].

[Britain circa ] 1807 - Manuscript: Pen and wash colour on woven paper (Very Good, clean with old centrefold), 23.5 x 37.5 cm (9.5 x 15 inches). An intriguing British manuscript map of Central Poland, made during the height of the Napoleonic Wars, between the Battle of Pu?tusk (1806) and the foundation of the Duchy of Warsaw (1807), emphasizing road communications between key sites. This interesting English-language manuscript map depicts a portion of Central and Eastern Poland, with Warsaw, in the lower centre, with the area depicted extending from ‘Culm’ (Che?mno) and ‘Thorn’ (Toru?), in the west; to Bia?ystok and Grodno (Belarus), in the east. Made during the Napoleonic Wars, the map’s purpose seems to be to highlight the road network between major towns. The map features politician divisions according to the period immediately following the Third Partition of Poland (1795). At this time, there was no Polish state, as the areas in yellow (including Warsaw) were actually under Prussian occupation, although the traditional parts of Prussia are still distinguished here by being coloured in light green and labeled "K. of Prussia". The areas to the southeast of Warsaw, coloured in pink and labeled "Galicia", were then under Austrian occupation, while the areas in the east, colured in dark green are part of "Russian Poland". With the symbol of crossed swords, the map labels the location of the Battle of Pu?tusk (December 26, 1806), just north of Warsaw, a large altercation between Russian and French armies during the Napoleonic Wars, that while a tactical Russian victory, was a strategic draw. This detail also gives a hint towards the dating of map, which seems to show the state of play as it appeared in the first half of 1807. The Treaties of Tilsit (July 7-9, 1807) re-divided Poland between Prussia, Russian and France. The French share became the Duchy of Warsaw, a Napoleonic puppet state. Thus, the present map seems to have been made after Pu?tusk, but before Tilsit. The circumstances of the creation of the map are not known, although it was probably made by an individual in Britain who was closely following the progress of the Napoleonic Wars, within which Poland was a key theatre. While it does not precisely mimic any printed map of which we are aware, it bears some resemblance to the manner of William Faden’s A map of the Kingdom of Poland and Grand Dutchy of Lithuania including Samogitia and Curland, divided according to their dismemberments, with the Kingdom of Prussia (London, 1799).

Pittsburgh: Printed by Zadok Cramer for for David M'Keehan, Publisher and Proprietor, 1807. First edition. 262 pp. 1 vols. 12mo (162 x 106 mm). Contemporary quarter calf and boards. Corners somewhat rubbed, occasional foxing as usual. Very good, fresh copy. Custom morocco backed slipcase and chemise. First edition. 262 pp. 1 vols. 12mo (162 x 106 mm). "...One of the essential books for an Americana collection" - Streeter. The first full account of the Lewis and Clark expedition written by a participant and preceding the official account by seven years. Gass was a sergeant who, by order of Lewis and at the insistence of Thomas Jefferson, kept a journal of the expedition's activities, and this book seems closely based on that document.   "Gass became one of the best-known members of the expedition for several reasons: his key role as sergeant brought his name up frequently in the jourrnals of Lewis and Clark; his account was the first to be published; he was the first to have a biography written about him; and finally, he outlived the other members of the Corps of Discovery by several decades, dying at the age of ninety-nine in 1870" (Wagner-Camp). This copy bears an early gift inscription on the flyleaf: Presented to Geo. H. Culbertson from his Cousin Isabella C. Lockhart of Stoney Brook Township, Chester Co. Philadelphia, Penna. A.D. 1835. "WE HAVE ENCOURAGED OUR MEN TO KEEP JOURNALS, AND SEVEN OF THEM DO SO, TO WHOM IN THIS RESPECT WE GIVE EVERY ASSISTANCE IN OUR POWER" (Lewis, letter to Jefferson 7 April 1805). RARE.         Fragment of a Prescription

A fragment of a manuscript prescription signed by Guillotin, approximately 205mm x 85mm in size. Lightly browned and slightly creased, with a few small chips to edges, but generally fairly clean with a nice clear signature. Guillotin "did not invent the guillotine, did not die by the guillotine, and all his life futilely tried to detach his name from the height reducer" (Dictionary of Eponyms). Guillotin became associated with the machine after proposing a more humane manner of despatching those who had been sentenced to death, but it was in fact invented by Dr. Antoine Louis, secretary of the Academy of Medicine, and was originally known as the Louisette, indeed Louis fell victim to his invention during the Reign of Terror. Guillotin died in his bed in 1814

"Gen. Morgan Lewis, Governor of New York, 1804. Autograph Address to Legislature and Assembly" (cover title).

Fine. 6 leaves cream wove paper, 24 x 20 cm with manuscript text on both sides of each leaf - approximately 20 lines each side. Each leaf hinged to white card stock and case-bound in dark blue morocco, 22 x 27 cm, gilt stamped title on front board, gilt inner dentelles, all edges gilt. Lewis was a Captain of a regiment of the New York militia during the American Revolution, after which he returned to the study of law. A Republican, he served a single term as governor of New York from1804-1807. This speech was given before the New York State Legislature and Assembly at Albany on Jan. 27, 1807. In it he both reflects on the accomplishments of his term as governor as well as promotes an agenda for further refinements in the law and civil society. Approximately two pages address problems in the criminal code and he urges judicial reform, with several examples of inequities and abuse in sentencing. Another two or three pages are devoted to issues of military training and equipage, again with examples of deficiencies in the current state of things. The text of this speech has been published in full in Messages from the Governors: Comprising Executive Communications to the Legislature and Other Papers Relating to Legislation from Organization of the First Colonial Assembly in 1683 to and Including the Year 1906, with Notes, Volume 2. pp. 595-602.         Fragment of a Prescription

No Place: No Publisher, 1807. Guillotin died in his bed in 1814. Signed by Author. First Edition. Unbound. Good. 48mo (Oblong). Ephemera.

Appropriation of Ordnance to the Defence of St. Helena.

London: Printed by J. Gold, Shoe Lane, 1807. First edition, 12mo, iv, [5]-27, [1]pp., original printed wrappers (a little chipped), stitched as issued. This little pamphlet gives a detailed explanation of the defences that Colonel Patton, governor of St. Helena, took to improve the island from attack. The island has shear cliffs on all sides which rise from 400 to 1,000 feet, and are inaccessible to an enemy from the sea. Guns and Canons were placed at the top of these heights and were able to fire directly down on any debarking troops and command that approach by sea. Patton had the advantage of employing the invention of Colonel Shrapnell's exploding 'round case shot' with fuses to explode them over the enemy. These are the shells that soon earned the name shrapnel. "Every piece of ordnance intended for the defence of the interior of St. Helena, whether mounted upon garrison or field carriages, .... ought to depress as far as fifty degrees .... and the landing places in many situations requires this depression ...." Patton devised traversing and horizontal platforms for garrison guns and field ordnance at strategic elevated positions on the cliffs. The perpendicular height of every maritime post from sea level was measured and a table formed for each of the stations, that gave in yards the distances which corresponded to the degrees and minutes of the angle of depression. Of these tables three were completed, one for Ladderhill, one for Rupert's Point, and one for Goat-pound Ridge. The advantages derived from the platforms mostly depended on high situations, and therefore were most exclusively appropriated to St. Helena. **** The notes for this book were written on board his Majesty's ship Sir Edward Hughes, on Patton's homeward journey to England. He hoped that "his suggestions might possibly be found of some advantage to the service of his sovereign ..... [and] for these purposes he brought models with him of the carriages and platforms which he had adopted at St. Helena."?Preface. Provenance: From the library of Quentin Keynes. Not on COPAC or OCLC.

A Narrative of the Operations of a Small British Force, under the Command of Brigadier-General Sir Samuel Auchmuty,

London: John Joseph Stockdale,, 1807. employed in the Reduction of Monte Video, on the River Plate, A.D. 1807. By a Field Officer on the Staff. Folio. Original green sand-grained cloth-backed drab boards, longitudinal printed label to the spine. Engraved operational map as frontispiece. A little rubbed, and bumped at the corners, label chipped but largely legible, hinges cracked but sound, light browning, a very good copy. Loosely inserted notes of a twentieth-century researcher relating to regiments and naval personnel who served in the campaign, and a 2-page typed letter signed from the secretary of the Rifle Brigade Museum Trust concerning regimental awards for Monte Video. First and only edition, decidedly uncommon, only two copies on Copac - BL and Cambridge, which copy is listed twice - OCLC adds just seven world-wide. Sir Samuel Auchmuty (1758?1822) was born in New York, the son of the Rector of Trinity Church. His family was loyalist, and "having graduated BA at the college of New York, Auchmuty joined the British army, first as a volunteer, and was appointed ensign in the 45th regiment of foot on 11 January 1777. He was promoted lieutenant a year later" (ODNB). Despite little wealth or "interest" Auchmuty managed to attract the attention of the governor-general, Lord Cornwallis, and carved a considerable career for himself in India, seeing service "in the war against Tipu, sultan of Mysore (1790?92) - meanwhile gaining promotion to major - right through to the siege of Seringapatam in 1792. Then he went to Calcutta as Cornwallis's deputy quartermaster-general to the king's forces in India. The next commander-in-chief, Sir Robert Abercromby, was also colonel of the 75th and soon made Auchmuty his military secretary, with the rank of lieutenant-colonel; Auchmuty saw more service in the Rohilla war of 1796". He subsequently commanded the 10th Foot in the expedition against Napoleon in Egypt led by Sir David Baird, who "made Auchmuty adjutant-general of his force, and he took part in the desert march and the voyage down the Nile that captured popular imagination in Britain. He remained in Egypt until 1803, eventually as adjutant-general for the whole British force, and left with the evacuating forces. He was knighted on his return to Britain". After 3 years in charge of the Isle of Thanet, an important command during the period of the Invasion Threat, he was given command of the present expedition charged with salvaging the situation in the aftermath of Home Popham and William Beresford's disastrous, unauthorised descent, truly "an opportunity to make his name". The operations were far from a complete success, Auchmuty did not have a large enough force to attrack the primary target of Buenos Aires, but succeeded in storming Monte Video. Despite the brevity of the British administration in the city, Auchmuty's regime apparently "did reveal to the people the weakness and inequity of the Spanish colonial system, and the benefits of doing business with the more enlightened British" (Speake). On the arrival of reinforcements, he was succeeded in command by Lieut--General Whitelocke, commanding the left wing when Buenos Aires was attacked. Auchmuty "reached all his objectives but other units were destroyed or captured. He fully agreed that Whitelocke was correct in giving up the assault but his opinion on Whitelocke's decision to evacuate Montevideo is not known - although he is recorded as having spent much of the voyage to Britain drinking hard". Whitelocke was summoned to a court martial, found guilty and dismissed the service; Auchmuty was given the thanks of parliament for Montevideo, promoted major-general and made colonel of the 103rd foot. This account is generally attributed to Major Tucker, who had been Auchmuty's brigade major on Baird's expedition to Africa. He was serving with the 72nd at the Cape when the Monte Video Expedition was undertaken and "obtained leave to accompany the 47th foot to Rio de la Plata" (Philippart, The Royal Military Calendar, IV, p.175). On arrival, he was made military secretary and aide-de-camp to Colonel Backhouse at Maldonada, continuing in that position until Auchmuty succeeded to command and appointed him Assistant Quarter Master General. "He served as major to the Grenadiers at the assault of Monte Video, on which occasion he received a bayonet wound in his arm. He had the honour to enter the breach on 3rd February 1807, and was selected by Sir Samuel Auchmuty to bring home the despatches, and thereby obtained the brevet if Lieut.-Col.", and also the opportunity to publish this early account. In the appendices it is noted that Tucker was voted a £100 vase from Lloyd's Patriotic Fund. An excellently-preserved copy of this important record of one of the successes of an otherwise shambolic and ill-starred phase of British military history, it is also considered by Speake as "the first stage of the literary production of the so-called British Travellers with regard to the Banda Oriental" (Speake).
