German fraktur manuscript prayer book with slipcase

Probably Pennsylvania, 1807. Full leather. Very good. The prayer book measures approximately 4.25" x 6.25"; the slipcase 4.5" x 7". Complete with frontispiece, title page, author and ownership page, 273 numbered text pages, and 7-page index. The exceptionally well-done frontispiece is hand-drawn/colored and shows Jesus Christ in prayer next to a large sunflower under bright sun. The text is a mixture of fraktur and script. Elaborate hand-drawn headings and decorations throughout the text in red, green, yellow, and black-brown repeat the sun and flower motif. Red leather boards five raised bands and gilt foliate tooling. The initials "R. G." are stamped in the center of the front cover. All edges gilt. Sound binding with intact hinges and clean pages. Edge-gilding is bright; decorations somewhat darkened. The well-worn tight-fitting brown-leather slipcase is structurally sound but missing the top end of its cap. The book is titled Sonen Wend: Blumlein which I believe loosely translates as Sunshine: Flowers. The title page also states that it contains confession and communion vespers as well as daily prayers. On the reverse is a note that it was compiled by Franz Xaveri Warig in 1807 for Oresencia Kieferin. A beautiful handcrafted work of religious, and perhaps personal, devotion.

A spectacular copy of the rarest issue of the book complete with all of the plates being finely hand coloured! the normal issue has the plates printed in sepia. in addition this copy is very tall as all of the edges have been kept untrimmed. This copy is very clean, far more so than normal as the sepia issue seemed to become quite a bit more browned. Heriot travelled a good deal through Canada from 1800 to 1816 as deputy postmaster general of British North America. He recorded his travels in illustration as well as text, as represented by the fine plates in the present work. Heriot was considered one of the finest watercolorists of his day. The plates depict the Azores and include three views of Quebec; one each of St. Paul's Bay, Jeune Lorete, the Ruins of Chateau Richer, River Etchemin, and Lake St. Charles; two views each of Niagara Falls, the St. Lawrence, the Fall of Montmorenci, and the Fall of la Puce; one each of Fort Niagara, Montreal, Grand Chaudiere on the Outaouais River, and the Bridge on the Jacques Cartier; and illustrations of Indian costume, an Indian encampment, and two of French Canadian dancing. The text offers a fine contemporary account of the Loyalist settlements in Canada and contains important material on the cod fisheries, fur trade, and native Indians, with a printing of Father Rasle's vocabulary of the Algonquian language. Very very scarce in this condition and fully coloured. 1807

Owego]. This is an early map of Owego with one street called CHAPPELL ST.

1807 - This is an early map of Owego with one street called CHAPPELL ST. that is described in Kingman's EARLY OWEGO on page 347 "That portion between Main and Front was known as Chapel street, (so called because the old Methodist church, then known as "the chapel,' stood on the southeast corner of it and Main Street. After the academy was built in this street, in 1883, the name was changed to Academy street." Another interesting name is "Dog alley, sometimes known as Hickory street, was a cul de sac extending from Main street a few rods north. . The name of Dog alley was naturally unpleasing to the residents . now Central avenue ." after being straightened. page 359. 19" x 23.5" on brown paper. Circa 1807.         THE LADY'S MAGAZINE or Entertaining Companion for the FAIR SEX, Appropriated Solely to Their USE and AMUSEMENT

London, Patternoster Row: Printed for G. Robinson This bound volume of issues is about 9 x 5.5 inches (about 22 x 14 cm) 3/4 leather, red cloth cover with green leather corners and spine, gilt decorations on all leather edges and on spine, gilt spine titles. The edges are rubbed and corners worn and the red cloth has a little light soil and a couple of small splots on the front board, otherwise the colors and gilt are bright. Plain colored endpapers, hinges started but strong. Previous owner's bookplate on front paste-down. All edges stained red. The text is on rag paper, very clean and fresh throughout. Issues include: 1807: Jan, April, May, June, Sept; 1809: Jan, Feb, May, June, Sept. Images included: 10 hand-watercolored fashion plates (Regency period). These usually represent two figures (often front and back views) of women in congenial activities - playing the harp, lounging and conversing, walking arm-in-arm, etc. One is so cute, it reminds me sharply of Kate Greenaway. Plus: 23 engravings and 13 folding engravings. The folding engravings are mostly embroidery patterns (or rather, designs) for such things as borders and trimmings, crown of a cap, designs to decorate veils, etc. Very delicate and mostly flora-inspired. The engravings include scenes and portraits, with a "gallery" of English peers at the end of the book. The texts cover a wide range of topics including current fashion, biography, history and natural history, travel, poetry, foreign news, births, marriages, and deaths, essays, etc. Apparently what a 'Lady' of the period would need to know to carry on sprightly parlour conversation. Ladies in the obituaries are noted for their piety, pleasantness, manners, and tenderness. Their patronage is recounted. Many died in 'childbed' or in 'unsuccessful labor.' Gentlemen are noted for their accomplishments. No further comment from ye cataloger. COLLECTIBLE 3592. Serial, First Editions. Hard Cover. Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket (as issued). Illus. by Hand-colored Plates Plus Engravings. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Collectible.

        Terre de Diemén. Grou-agara.

Paris: circa, 1807. Engraved portrait, 315 x 240 mm. (plate size). A striking portrait of the Tasmanian man Grou-Agara by Petit prepared for the atlas volume of the first edition of the official voyage account. The two ships of the expedition had anchored in d'Entrecasteaux Channel on 13 January 1802 after two months at sea; Frank Horner has called the time that followed 'two of the most productive months the expedition was to enjoy' (The French Reconnaissance, p. 191). Their easy and friendly relations with the aboriginal tribes of the region had brought great satisfaction to the French, and they maintained a good rapport throughout their stay. Petit, in particular, was very busy with his sketch book, and his series of portraits and scenes are among the most sensitive portrayals of Tasmanian aborigines - in fact, together with the handful of portraits in the official account of Cook's third voyage, these portraits are the earliest major study of the Tasmanians. The table of contents simply notes that this man was from Van Diemen's Land. Slight marginal browning, very good condition.

Travels of Bertrandon de la Brocquiere to Palestine

1807. First Edition . DE LA BROCQUIERE, Bertrandon. The Travels of Bertrandon de la Brocquiere, Counsellor & First Esquire-Carver to Philippe le Bon, Duke of Burgundy, to Palestine, and His Return from Jerusalem Overland to France, During the Years 1432 & 1433. [England]: At the Hafod Press, by James Henderson, 1807. Tall octavo, 20th-century three-quarter vellum, red morocco spine label. $1500.First edition in English of this combined Middle Eastern travel narrative and comprehensive investigation of international relations between the Ottoman Empire and its allies, written to support the commencement of the Crusades, with double-page engraved map of Tartary, handsomely bound. At the instruction of the Duc de Bourgogne, la Brocquiere undertook a pilgrimage to Jerusalem in order to investigate whether Europe could be liberated from Ottoman rule. This work offers a critical assessment of the relations between the Turks, Greeks, and their allies during the period in question. Furthermore, it urges the French, English, and Germans to band together as a unified force to overthrow the Ottoman Empire. La Brocquiere thus became the authoritative Western voice in support of the Crusades. This work was originally written in manuscript and then subsequently extracted from the original volume in the National Library at Paris and put into modern French by M. le Grand DÂ’Aussy. This is the first edition in English, translated by Thomas Johnes. Light foxing to interior. A near-fine copy.
