La Gerusalemme Liberata.

Pisa: dalla tipografia della Società Letteraria, 1807 - 2 volumes, folio (400 × 260 mm) gathered and signed in fours. Contemporary straight-grained red morocco by L. Staggemeier (with his orange label), sides with wide gilt and blind decorative border, spine divided into six panels by double false bands, lettered in two panels, the others with a large gilt centre tool, dentelles and morocco inside hinges, green endpapers, gilt edges. A little rubbing to extremities, lower joint of vol. II slightly darkened, overall very good. Engraved portrait frontispiece by Raffaello Merghen. A splendid edition in large paper format of Tasso's La Gerusalemme liberata (first published 1580), here in an imposing pair of Staggemeier bindings. "Of this edition, superintended by [Giovanni] Rosini, only 250 copies were struck off, and one on vellum" (Ebert, General Bibliographical Dictionary). The lavishness of the format is here matched by the binding, produced by one of the many German émigré binders working in the London book trade. L. Staggemeier of Osnabruck had started in partnership with Samuel Welcher, also a native of Germany, by at least 1799. They seem to have separated into separate businesses in adjoining buildings in Villiers Street, Strand, about 1810, and they disappear from the directories by 1820. In their heyday they were among the most prolific workshops in London producing "extra" quality work, and they worked extensively for James Edwards, the Pall Mall bookseller. The History of the Anglo-Saxons. Second edition, corrected and enlarged

London: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, Paternoster Row. 1807. 2 vols. in one, 4to, pp. x, 499; vii, [1], 472, [8]; large hand-colored folding map in volume I; contemporary calf rebacked, marbled edges, very good. Second and best edition of the first part of Turner's History of England from the Earliest Times to the Death of Elizabeth, originally published in four volumes 1799-1805. Ã’Turner was the first to write a history of England using original source material from Anglo-Saxon manuscripts, and the first to make use of dictionaries, catalogues and grammars that had been compiled earlier in the 18th century. His work first occupied a great field. He not only felt an enthusiasm for the subject, but he had a genuine power of presentation and, in addition to the respect of such scholars as Hallam and Southey, he won the abiding interest of Scott, and later of Tennyson" (DNB). The folding map is colored and shows the territory of the ancient Saxons north of the Elbe.

Authentic Narrative of the Death of Lord Nelson:

London: for T. Cadell and W. Davies,, 1807. with the Circumstances preceding, attending, and subsequent to, that event; the Professional Report on his Lordship's Wound; and Several Interesting Anecdotes. Octavo (212 × 134 mm). Contemporary funereal black straight grained full morocco, spine in compartments with blind tooling, gilt rolled bands, and gilt titles direct, sides bordered with a gilt roll and elaborate blind-tooled panelling, board edges gilt rolled, blind-rolled turn-ins, purple silk doublures with gilt borders and cornerpieces, all edges gilt. Portrait frontispiece and a plate of the fatal musket ball. Spine very slightly faded, ends and corners with slight superficial wear and some sensitive restoration, some light toning or dust soiling within, but overall in excellent condition. First edition of this scarce and definitive account of Admiral Lord Nelson's final days. This is a superb and evocative association copy, owned by the Nelson family and bearing the armorial bookplate Nelson's nephew Nelson Matcham (1811-86), the eighth and youngest child of Horatio Nelson's sister Catherine Nelson and her husband the traveller George Matcham. The copy has been bound in a sombre yet luxuriant funereal binding as a monument to a dead brother, uncle, and national hero. It is notable that the towering enormity of Nelson's myth and memory loomed particularly large over Catherine's family; Nelson Matcham may have been her eighth child, but he was the forth (after Horatia, George Nelson, and Charles Horatio Nelson) to bear a name in honour of the Admiral. Beatty was the naval surgeon "who attended Nelson after he received his fatal wound, [and] performed the autopsy" (ODNB). He wrote this account for Clark and M'Arthur's monumental Life "but it was published in this form because of 'the length of time which must necessarily elapse before so extensive and magnificent a Publication can be completed'" (NMM). Uncommon in the first edition, and highly desirable thus.

Some Account of the Public Life, and a Selection from the Unpublished Writings of the Earl of Macartney

London: Printed for T. Cadell and W. Davies,, 1807. The Latter consisting of Extracts from an Account of the Russian Empire: a Sketch of the Political History of Ireland; and a Journal of an Embassy from the King of Great Britain to the Emperor of China. With an Appendix to each volume. 2 volumes, quarto (265 ×210 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, flat spine, contrast green and tan labels, quatrefoil devices gilt in compartments, edges sprinkled blue. Engraved portrait frontispiece. Spines restored, joints, head- and tail-caps, tan burn from the turn-ins, portrait off-set, light browning to the text block, overall a very good set. First edition of the life of diplomat George Macartney by John Barrow, Macartney's comptroller and private secretary during his embassy to China and his Governorship of the Cape of Good Hope. Despite his lengthy service, with five years as Governor of Bengal, it has been said of Macartney that; "Few public servants have left office with purer hands than Macartney." (DNB) Barrow himself later become a noted patron of exploration, helping to found the Royal Geographical Society, and he was a prolific travel author, best known for his account of the Mutiny on the Bounty. Bookplates with ducal coronet of the Stratton Street library of Harriot Beauclerk, duchess of St. Albans. Harriot was the daughter of the wardrobe-keeper of company of Irish strolling players, she was spotted by Sheridan, made a success on the London stage, and in 1815, on the death of his wife, married the banker Thomas Coutts, having been his mistress for a decade. In the face of family hostility, on his death Coutts bequeathed his wife the entirety of his vast fortune, and his partnership in Coutts bank; "Harriot Coutts proved to be an excellent businesswoman and banker, taking an active role in investment and management decisions. She was also extremely generous to Coutts's daughters, giving them each £10,000 per annum. In return they expressed nothing but ingratitude and hostility. Regarded as an adventuress who had preyed on an old man, Harriot was lampooned, caricatured, and mocked for her extravagant lifestyle and her generous giving to the poor" (ODNB). In 1827 she married William Aubrey de Vere Beauclerk, ninth duke of St Albans; "Many considered the duke to be simple-minded, but others found him kind and gentle; the marriage was broadly successful. Harriot thus proved twice over that marriages could be happy even though the world considered the partners mismatched. Observers regarded their union as an exchange of wealth for a title, but that was no uncommon practice among the aristocracy". She died in 1837.

A Course of Lectures on Natural Philosophy and the Mechanical Arts

58 plates (two are finely & brilliantly hand-colored) & diagrams in the text. xxiv, 796 pp.; xii, [iv], 738 pp. Two vols. Large 4to, cont. olive half-calf & marbled boards (minor foxing), spines gilt. London: J. Johnson, 1807. First edition, and a very lovely copy, of this important book, containing Young's significant writings on optics, mechanics, hydrodynamics, physics, astronomy, the tides, etc., etc., etc. It is a course of lectures covering virtually the whole of theoretical science and technology. It includes his completed undulatory theory of light, with a description of his experimental demonstration of interference. In the lecture "On Collision" he was probably the first to use the term "energy," and in another lecture he defined a "modulus of elasticity" (Young's modulus). The second volume includes a bibliography of some 20,000 references (which was omitted from the second edition and has never been reprinted), and reprints of his classic papers from the Philosophical Transactions, in which he established the wave theory of light and discovered the principle of light interference, gave the first description of astigmatism, and in general established the principles of physiological optics (see Garrison-Morton 1486-88). "Young made many discoveries in natural philosophy and physiological optics...he is most famous, however, for his attempt to win acceptance for an undulatory theory of light."-D.S.B., XIV, pp. 562-72. This is the nicest set of this great book I have seen for many years. ❧ Roberts & Trent, Bibliotheca Mechanica, p. 367-(giving a very full account of the contents of these two vols.). .

Horse Racing. La Course de Chevaux

Edward Orme, London 1807 - Aquatint engraving, coloured by hand, by James Godby and Henri Merke (watermark: 'J. Whatman 1805'). A fine image from 'Orme's Collection of British Field Sports': "the finest and most important sporting book of the last two centuries" (Schwerdt) Samuel Howitt, "genius, artist, sportsman", concentrated his considerable artistic talents on picturing scenes of horse-racing and hunting in all its aspects. Born in Nottinghamshire, England, Howitt was largely self-taught ,"although he must have been helped by his companions George Morland, Rowlandson and John Raphael Smith. Howitt's watercolours of hunting, shooting and racing have delightful spontaneity. An enthusiastic sportsman himself, he had sufficient family money to paint at first only for his own and his friends pleasure. However, this fortune was quickly dissipated and Howitt moved to London. [He made a living], partly by etching at which he was extremely skilled. As an artist he was prolific, more than 150 of his designs were published in The Sporting Magazine. He illustrated Beckford's Thoughts on Hunting, and other books, including Orme's Collection of British Field Sports . The light touch of his pen, the delicacy of his brushwork and his experience of field sports ensured all that he drew was animated and accurate." (Charles Lane British Racing Prints pp.132-133). Cf. Rheinalbum.Mainz, Victor von Zabern, [ca. 1860]. Oblong folio (22.5×31 cm). With richly ornamented chromolithographed title-page after Adalbert Müller by W. Loeillot in Berlin, and 24 aquatints (ca. 12.5×17.5 cm), in the original publisher's fine hand-colouring with very bright colours and heightened with gum arabic, mounted on thick grey paper, in a framework of white and double black lines and gold strips. All interleaved with tissue guards. Schmitt also mentions a title-page printed in black and white, but such a title-page was probably not intended for the coloured copies. Original publisher's red calf, richly blind and gold-stamped, later marbled endpapers (rebacked, with original backstrip laid-down).

Schmitt 259 (uncoloured and lacking 1 plate), cf. 257; cf. Engelmann, Biblbiotheca geographica, p. 827 (Andenken an den Rhein); not in GVK; KVK/WorldCat; for Tanner: Thieme & Becker XXXII, pp. 432-433. Extremely rare series of magnificent aquatint Rhine views in gorgeous publisher's hand-colouring. The views are altered copies of the 24 views published in Tanner's earlier series Andenken an den Rhein, printed from new plates. While the original series was wholly engraved by and after drawings of the draughtsman and engraver Johann Jakob Tanner the younger (1807-1862), he had some help for present series by other artists and engravers. While the work itself is already very scarce, we couldn't locate any other copy in publisher's hand-colouring, but the colouring is very similar to that in other series published by Victor von Zabern, and Engelmann mentions the contemporary availability of coloured copies of Tanner's previous series. This gorgeous colouring, which nearly turns the prints into paintings, gives a lively and romantic idea of the greatness of the beautiful and mysterious Rhine landscape that has played such a crucial role in German history and literature. The album was undoubtedly aimed at the increasing number of wealthy tourists for whom the romance of the Rhine was a powerful attraction. In very good condition. With the binding rebacked, some faint soiling on the front board, and some slight wear on the original backstrip. Magnificent series of Rhine views.

A Letter to W. Manning, Esq. M.P. on the Proposition Submitted to the Consideration of Government, for taking the Duties on Muscovado Sugar ad valorem

Printed by S. & C. McDowall. [1807]. First Edition, [ii],46pp., title and last leaf a little dusty, recent marbled boards, morocco label to spine. "The quality of sugar formed no just basis for taxation. Such a system was inexpedient because it would encourage the production of low-grade product, particularly in the newly conquered colonies which were capable of supplying an almost unlimited quantity of the superior article. It would be impossible to grade sugars properly into the several classes according to which they would be taxed in the proposal under consideration. There would be much fraud to secure the benefit of low rates. Completely side-steps the great fact that it was not equitable to exact the same duty as formerly when sugar had declined to one-third of its one-time value."—Ragatz, p.281. Fox Hunting. La Chasse au Renard

Edward Orme, London 1807 - A fine image from 'Orme's Collection of British Field Sports': "the finest and most important sporting book of the last two centuries" (Schwerdt) Samuel Howitt, "genius, artist, sportsman", concentrated his considerable artistic talents on picturing scenes of horse-racing and hunting in all its aspects. Born in Nottinghamshire, England, Howitt was largely self-taught ,"although he must have been helped by his companions George Morland, Rowlandson and John Raphael Smith. Howitt's watercolours of hunting, shooting and racing have delightful spontaneity. An enthusiastic sportsman himself, he had sufficient family money to paint at first only for his own and his friends' pleasure. However, this fortune was quickly dissipated and Howitt moved to London. [He made a living], partly by etching at which he was extremely skilled. As an artist he was prolific. more than 150 of his designs were published in The Sporting Magazine. Cf. Abbey Scenery 14; Lane British Sporting Prints p.133; Mellon British Sporting and Animal Drawings p.106; Siltzer p.164; cf. Schwerdt II, p.53; Siltzer p.164; cf.Tooley 273. The American Aloe

London 1807 - The most strikingly beautiful flower plates ever to be printed in England. The present plate was issued as a substitute for an earlier plate titled The Aloe by Thornton ".as the plant shown is not an aloe but an agave [Agave Americana L.]. Aloes are natives of the Old World, their native home being Africa: agaves, though similar in appearance, are inhabitants of the New World. Neither is found wild in the other's territory. Thornton realized his mistake, or had it pointed out to him, [and the present plate was published]. Agaves are, however, familiar under another name as they are the well-known `Century Plants' which are supposed to live a hundred years before flowering, the whole plant dying when the flower-spike decays. In fact, they have been known to flower as early as seven years of age and seldom take longer than twenty-five years. When they flower in glasshouses in the colder countries they present a problem as the flower-spike may rise to thirty feet or more, making it necessary to take out a pane of the roof glass to let the inflorescence rise into the open air. Agave Americana. is often used for making hedges in warmer climates and a variegated form is also much grown as a specimen plant in such countries." (Ronald King, The Temple of Flora by Robert Thornton, 1981, p.70). Thornton's Temple of Flora is the greatest English colour-plate flower book. ".[Thornton] inherited a competent fortune and trained as a doctor. He appears to have had considerable success in practice and was appointed both physician to the Marylebone Dispensary and lecturer in medical botany at Guy's and St. Thomas's hospitals. But quite early in his career he embarked on his.great work. What Redouté produced under the patronage of L'Héritier, Marie Antoinette, the Empress Josephine, Charles X and the Duchesse de Berry, Thornton set out to do alone. Numerous important artists were engaged. twenty-eight paintings of flowers commissioned from Abraham Pether, known as `Moonlight Pether', Philip Reinagle, . Sydenham Edwards, and Peter Henderson. The result.involved Thornton in desperate financial straits. In an attempt to extricate himself he organized the Royal Botanic Lottery, under the patronage of the Prince Regent.it is easy to raise one's eyebrows at Thornton's unworldly and injudicious approach to publishing. But he produced.one of the loveliest books in the world" (Alan Thomas Great Books and Book Collecting , pp.142-144). First and only state of this plate from the Temple of Flora. Hand-coloured and colour-printed aquatint and line engraving by Medland.
