Archibald Duncan
James Cundee, London. First edition, hardcover, London, 1806. Overall condition is very good. Professionally conserved sometime in not too distant past. Original full leather boards show considerable wear, new decorative leather spine. Text block probably resewn because binding is tight. Original endpapers and blanks are retained. No interior markings or evidence of prior ownership. Paginates: blank leaf, frontis, vi, 7-419, [13], 3 blank leaves, 14 plates including frontis, one of those plates is paginated. Decorative endpapers. Complete as issued. A couple of the plates have non-intrusive water stains at margins, but stains are not seen in adjacent text (see scans). A rare book: none offered for sale at time of listing, ABPC lists one at auction in 2006, WorldCat locates 11 copies (OCLC: 10337397). A pretty cool book. MARZARI PENCATI, Giuseppe
Tipografia Paroni, Vicenza, 1806. Chase Impeachment
Baltimore: Printed for S. Butler & S. Cole. 1806. First Edition. Full leather. 18mo, [in three volumes], [4], 300pp; [5], 220pp; [5], 121-368pp. Size: 15cm x 9cm. Brown morocco, title in gilt over red morocco label on spine, decorative gilt bands. Original owners inscription on title page. Clean text. Toning to leaf ends. An important account of the Senate trial of Associate Justice Samuel Chase, who was accused of bias by Thomas Jefferson. He was impeached by the House of Representatives, but acquitted by the Senate. His trial established the independence of the federal judiciary and would establish an unofficial precedent that justices should not be impeached for their judicial performance. (Sabin 12209). Near fine. Item #1260 The impeachment proceedings of Samuel Chase established limits on the impeachment power of the Executive and Legislative Branch, while also defining the limits of judicial independence under the constitution. His acquittal likely saved the career of Chief Justice John Marshall, which was of great historical importance to the United States. Chief Justice William Rehnquist, in his book Grand Inquests, noted that while the senators who acquitted Chase did not agree with his judicial opinions, they believed that lifetime appoints should not be undermined by the judgments the justices make. In response to this trial, justices have been much more cautious in avoiding the appearance of political partisanship. [Attributes: First Edition]

Together with the Iliad and Odyssey of Homer uniformly bound. All sound and firmly bound. Boards a little dry. Pope was a London born poet, satirist, and translator of Homer. Bowles laid down certain canons as to poetic imagery which, subject to some modification, were later accepted, but were received at the time with strong opposition by admirers of Pope and his style. The controversy brought into sharp contrast the opposing views of poetry, which may be roughly described as the artificial and the natural. Bowles maintained that images drawn from nature are poetically finer than those drawn from art; and that in the highest kinds of poetry the themes or passions handled should be of the general or elemental kind, and not the transient manners of any society. [Germantown, PA]: [Germantown Print Works]. Textile. Good. An appealing illustrated broadside on cloth bearing a very early appearance of the famous "I cannot tell a lie" cherry tree story. Collins (Threads of History) says it was printed by the Germantown Print Works in Pennsylvania, ca. 1806. The story itself, which was invented by Washington's biographer Mason Locke Weems, first appeared in print that same year, in the fifth edition of Weems' Life of Washington. Aspiring to present George Washington as an ideal role model for young Americans, Weems embellished and invented biographical details to help demonstrate the founding father's honesty and other virtues. Measures approximately 11 x 11.75 inches. Typical staining, some fraying at the right edge, but entire printed border, often found compromised, is present. A nice example.
