Louis ALLIER de Hauteroche (1766 - 1827).
[Karadeniz Eregli, Turkey:], November 15. Manuscript map, black pen on laid paper (Very Good, some old creasing), 20 x 26 cm (8 x 10 inches). ARCHAEOLOGY / TURKEY / HERACLEA PONTICA: An intriguing original manuscript sketch map of Heraclea Pontica (modern Karadeniz Ere?li), one of the most important Greco-Roman historical sites along the Black Sea coast of Anatolia, made in 1806 by Louis Allier de Hauteroche, the esteemed archaeologist and numismatist who was then Napoleon’s vice-consul to the region. This is a fascinating original manuscript sketch map of Heraclea Pontica (French: Héraclée du Pont), a port on the Black Sea coast of Anatolia that was a major centre during ancient Greco-Roman times. The town was founded by the Greek city state of Megara between 560 and 558 BCE. It was named after Heracles, as one of the caves near the town was said to be the place where the famous mythological warrior descended towards the underworld to successfully abduct Cerberus, the fearsome three-headed dog that guarded the entrance to Hades. Heraclea Pontica became fabulously wealthy from maritime trade and was one of the most important centres in the Black Sea Basin. It declined during Roman times due to conflict in the surrounding region of Bithynia. Today the modern Turkish port of Karadeniz Ere?li (population: 110,000), a major industrial centre, rises atop and amidst the ruins of Heraclea Pontica. The present map was drafted in 1806, by Louis Allier de Hauteroche, the flamboyant archaeologist and numismatist, who then served as Napoleon Bonaparte’s Vice-Consul to ‘Héraclée du Pont’ … [Click Below for Full Description]

Acts Passed at the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee 1806 Up for sale is an incredibly rare piece of Tennessee history. This is the only copy that I've seen for sale. Tennessee gained statehood in 1796 so this book was published only 10 years after statehood was granted. This book measures 113 pages plus index. The index and pages 11,112, and 113 are facsimile and no title page is included. This is an amazing book listed at a reasonable price. You may never see another for sale. (Nelson, Horatio) [Philibert, Henri Pierre]
N.p. [France?]: [ca. 1806]. [231 pp]. 4to. A French Naval Officer in the Age of Nelson. A detailed and comprehensive naval journal by a French naval officer during the Napoleonic era. The author (Philibert, according to a note on the pastedown), a highly literate and seasoned naval officer who saw action in the waters of Europe, the Americas and Africa, records in this notebook some of the major engagements, including battles with Nelson, in which he participated. On pages 161-182 he lists the "Marine Anglais En 1800," alphabetically by ship (showing Capt. Bligh as captain of the 64-gun Agincourt), and follows with a vivid, English-language description of the Battle of Aboukir Bay (the Battle of the Nile): "the British squadron under the command of Horatio Nelson approached...the French fleet in the morning of the 1st of August 1798, from the westward. The action commenced at sunset of the same day, in pursuance of the admiral's signal to engage from van to the centre...The action was continuous from about 6 o'clock in the evening of the first of august, till there in the morning of the 2d. It was then intermitted for about 2 hours and was afterwards continuous till about 2 in the afternoon of the 2d... Capn Westcott of the Majestic was killed early in the action, but her first lieutenant Cuthbert so ably conducted her afterwards, as to receive the honour of public mention in the Admiral's official communication. Indeed, to the judgement and valour of all the officers, and to the courage of the crews, does the British admiral ascribe the success of this important day..." CORVISART, Jean Nicolas.
FIRST EDITION. "Corvisart founded clinical cardiology and introduced percussion into the clinic after translating Auenbrugger's book. He classed cardiac enlargement as active or passive aneurysm of the heart, and recognised the purring tremor as a sign of valvular obstruction but did not listen to the heart. His Essai was the first treatise on heart disease to conform to the pattern of a text-book and deal systematically with pericarditis, myocardial disease, carditis and aneurysm. He was physician to Napoleon and a reputed bon viveur... The first edition of Corvisart was written by Horeau from lecture notes, but later editions were by Corvisart himself" (Evan Bedford Catalogue 360). G&M 2737: "Corvisart really created cardiac symptomatology and made possible the differentiation between cardiac and pulmonary disorders." See also Willius & Keys, Cardiac Classics, pp. 279-290 and Lilly, Notable Medical Books, 159. Norman catalogue 518.

Jefferson Commends Lewis and Clark in 1806 State of the Union Address THOMAS JEFFERSON. [LEWIS AND CLARK]. Newspaper. Connecticut Courant. Hartford, Conn., December 10, 1806. 4 pp, 12½ x 20½ in. Inventory #22459 After purchasing the Louisiana Territory in 1803, President Jefferson sent his former personal secretary, Meriwether Lewis and Army officer William Clark to explore the huge tract of land. In his December 2, 1806, State of the Union address, Jefferson praised the expedition's success. His address, in full on page 3, includes this important paragraph: Excerpt "The expedition of Messrs. Lewis and Clarke, for exploring the river Missouri, and the best communication from that to the Pacific Ocean, has had all the success which could have been expected. They have traced the Missouri nearly to its source, descended the Columbia to the Pacific Ocean.... and it is but justice to say that Messrs. Lewis and Clarke, and their brave companions, have, by this arduous service, deserved well of their country." Meriwether Lewis (1774-1809) was best known for leading, along with William Clark, the expedition that explored the Louisiana Purchase from 1804-1806. He was a largely self-taught naturalist and outdoorsman, and soldier in the Army's First Infantry Regiment. In 1801, he joined Thomas Jefferson's staff as his personal secretary. In 1804, Jefferson picked his old friend and fellow Virginian to lead the transcontinental expedition. Jefferson named him Governor of the Louisiana Territory in 1807. Lingering effects of wounds suffered returning from the expedition dogged him until … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Charnock
London: H D Symonds, 1806. The first edition of this work, which was written on the post-Trafalgar life of Nelson. The preface notes that the wok was written due to a request by William Locker, 'Lord Nelson's professional father'. Locker provided Shamrock with many letters and other material for this work which gave this particular title more weight compared to other memoirs published after Trafalgar. Illustrated, with a frontispiece and five further plates. Collated, complete. John Shamrock was a naval biographer who wrote many works on officers and the navy alike. CONDITION In full calf binding. Rebacked with original boards preserved. Externally, generally smart. Slight rubbing to the boards, mostly at the edges. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age toned due to paper used. Occasional spots throughout. Overall Condition: Very Good Indeed.
