Complete set of 41 volumes, plus 6 illustrated volumes, published between 1806 and 1820 in half-volume jobs. This is the US edition of the British original published between 1802 and 1820.         Le Magnifique, No. 9

Paris 1806 - Jacques Barraband’s (1767-1809) engravings of birds are masterpieces of French ornithological illustration. This stunning portrait, Le Magnifique, No. 9, measures 21" x 13.5" and is in very good condition with light foxing and cropped margins. Expertly hand-colored, this bird had a rich blue underside, brown head, wings and tail-feathers and white plumage on its back. Precise lines define and detail each feather of this bird and the intricate patterning of the branch it is perched on. This engraving was done for the distinguished ornithologist Francois Levaillant, who commissioned the Barraband to illustrate his landmark works on exotic birds, including the lavish and striking “Histoire Naturelle des Oiseauz des Paradis et des Rolliers”. The collaboration of Levaillant and Barraband represented a departure from previous ornithological texts in its emphasis on beauty and luxury, with sumptuously colored and flawlessly rendered birds. Apart from their undoubted beauty, Barraband’s engravings display a scientific accuracy that few ornithological artists have matched since. The meticulous hand-colored engravings in Levaillants publications were unmatched for the delicate modulations of tone and color, fine lines and perfect draftsmanship, making them exceptional in their richness and tonal variation. Each feather is described by dozens of parallel lines, providing remarkable detail and naturalistically textured color. Some of the prints are embellished with touches of gold leaf on the feathers of the cheeks and shoulders of the birds, emphasizing the preciousness of the plates and reproducing the iridescence of the birds’ feathers. The present selection of images represents an opportunity to acquire spectacular engravings by a foremost 19th-century natural history artist.

"Partly Printed Document Signed ?Th: Jefferson? as President and ?James Madison? as Secretary of State, 1 page, on vellum, 15.5? x 8.75?. Adequate contrast. Washington, January 22, 1806. Paper Seal of the United States, 2.5? diameter, serrated edges, affixed with red wax at lower left. Soiled. Very Good condition. In part, ?Know Ye, That Cadwalader Evans of Washington County Pennsylvania, having deposited in the Treasury a certificate of the Register of the Land office at Steubenville ?" whereby it appears that he has made full payment for the Lot or Section Number Seventeen of Township Number Eight in Range Number Three, of the Lands directed to be sold at Steubenville by the act of Congress, entitled ?An act providing for the sale of the Lands of the United States in the Territory north-west of the Ohio, and above the mouth of Kentucky river,? and of the acts amendatory of the same, There is granted ... the said lot ... of land, with the appurtenances, unto the said Cadwalader Evans is heirs and assigns forever ...? Cadwalader Evans (1762-1841) was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and served as Speaker in 1799. The Act provided the establishment of three Land Offices at Cincinnati, Chilicothe, and ?one at Steubenville, for lands lying east of the river Muskingum, excluding those townships between the military lands and the purchase of the Ohio Company, which are intersected by that river.? The Northwest Ordinance was an act of the United States in Congress Assembled passed July 13, 1787. The ordinance created the Northwest Territory, the first organized territory of the United States, from lands beyond the Appalachian Mountains, between British Canada and the Great Lakes to the north and the Ohio River to the south. The upper Mississippi River formed the Territory's western boundary. It includes the present states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and part of Minnesota. On August 7, 1789, President George Washington signed a replacement, the Northwest Ordinance of 1789, in which the new 1st Congress reaffirmed the Ordinance with slight modifications under the newly effective Constitution of the United States."

Paris 1806 - John Wilton-Ely 536 and 537No watermark is presentThere is a second smaller engraving with the following measurementsImage Size: 140mm x 189mmPlatemark Size: 145mm x 193mmThis print was published between 1806-1833. Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. As architect, archaeologist, artist, designer, collector, and antiquities dealer, he produced a series of etchings and engravings depicting the glories of ancient Rome. These fine prints served as source material for other architects and designers. He was born in Venice on the 4th October 1720. The son of a stone-mason, he was educated as an architect under his maternal uncle Matto Lucchesi and under Carlo Zucchi. In 1740 Piranesi left Venice for Rome, there he studied etching under Giuseppe Vasi. He appears to have had little success in these early years in Rome and as his father was unable to continue his allowance returned to Venice in 1744. He was soon, however, encouraged to return to Rome by Giuseppe Wagner, a successful engraver and publisher of Venice. This time he achieved success, and a constant series of works, illustrating architecture and antiquities, issued from his studio until his death in 1778. His output in etched plates is enormous (about 1000 numbers in all). While he achieved a work of magnitude in pictorial records of Roman monuments of antiquity and of the Renaissance, and gave immense archæological, antiquarian, and topographical value to this work, the artistic quality always predominates. He was fond of peopling his ruins with Callot-like figures, and "like Callot makes great use of the swelling line" (Hind). He had two sons and a daughter, all of whom helped him in his work and after his death carried on his publications in Rome and Paris. They were Francesco (born 1748 or 1756; died 1810), Pietro (who lived till after 1807) and Laura (born 1750). His position in Rome and in Europe after 1760 was a prominent one. He was well-known figure to the wealthy English visitors in Rome and was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1757. Most of his life was passed in Rome, etching, writing, publishing, and directing a workshop in which the restoration and sale of antiques played a considerable part.He was famous for his poetic views of Rome and also his fantastic imaginary interiors. His skills, allied to his deep knowledge of archaeology, provided the substance for his Vedute (Views), a series of 135 etchings of ancient and contemporary Rome, published from 1745 onwards, which established the popular mental image of the city. Ornamenti Antichi was a collection of 110 etchings documenting large sculptural vases, together with other antiquities excavated (and in some cases created) in Italy in the 18th century. The prints were initially separately issued and sold by Piranesi over a period of several years and subsequently collected in two folio volumes, each with its own title page, in 1778. They illustrate a wide range of genuine antiquities, as well as Piranesi's own collections, from utilitarian objects such as cinerary urns, lamps, and sarcophagi to monumental vases. The plates in Vasi often included text by Piranesi with information about where the objects were discovered and their contemporary location, and the prints bore dedications to his patrons, colleagues, visitors and influential people. He believed absolutely in the supremacy of Roman over Greek architecture, an argument he expounded most forcefully in his Della magnificenza ed architettura dei Romani (On the Magnificence of Roman Architecture, 1761). his romanticized views and imaginary interiors had a profound effect on stage designers, painters of capricci such as Hubert Robert, and even writers: William Beckford, the author of the Gothic novel and Vathek . In the 20th century his imaginary interiors have been admired by the Surrealists . Reference: John Wilton-Ely. Giovanni Battista Pi

Gay I, 810. Clouzot, Guide du bibliophile français 252 : "Rare et recherché." Bon exemplaire.
