Voyages dans l'Inde. Troisème edition.Paris, Garnier freres, 1858. 4to. With 36 tinted lithographed plates, including one map of India, and 2 wood-engraved plates. Contemporary half morocco, gold-tooled spine, gilt edges.

Brunet V, col 432; cf. Graesse VI 433 (other ed.); not in Howgego. Third edition in the original French of the travels to India by the Russian prince Aleksey Soltykoff (1806-1859). The former diplomat adopted France as his home country, making two voyages from France by way of Egypt to India and Ceylon. The work covers both the voyages, the first from 1841 to 1843 and the second from 1844 to 1846. He gives among other things a detailed account of the Raja of Travancore and the region of Trivandrum. Soltykoff holds a sceptical view of the Englishmen, whom he considers patronizing and unappreciative. On the other hand, Saltykov himself is "lost in deepest contemplation of the mysteries of this marvellous country of India". The plates show the Indian inhabitants, processions, landscapes, architecture, ceremonies and more. Some foxing mostly in text and not affecting the illustrations, overall a good copy. Binding slightly rubbed along the extremities.

Base du Systeme Metrique Decimal, ou Mesure de L'arc du Meriedien

07 - Paris - Baudouin 1806 - A scarce two volume first edition set of Mechain's groundbreaking work on the metric system. The first two volumes of this groundbreaking work published in 1806 and 1807. A further continuation volume was published later in 1810. As these are still in the publishers original paper bindings it is entirely possible that these were purchased at the time prior to the existence of the third volume. ÂVolumes themselves complete with 8 folding plates to volume I. An early edition in the original French, Pierre Mechain initiates the system of measurement that is prominent today, initially by measuring the meridian arc of the Earth's surface between Dunkirk and Barcelona. Hugely interesting not only for its staggering influence but for the history of its composition, plagued by the political upheaval of the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars, the work remains one of the most important ever to have been written in the fields of science and mathematics. A work ofÂsubstantial importance. Condition: In paper-covered boards. Externally, there is significant wear to the boards, joints, extremities and backstrips, with loss to both, as well as significant tenderness to hinges, resulting in partially detached boards and endpages. Internally, the pages are generally firmly bound, aside from the endpages, with many uncut, and are largely bright and clean throughout, though age-toned and creased. Overall: VERY GOOD in a fair but original binding. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Das Recht des Besitzes. Eine civilistische Abhandlung.

Gießen, Heyer, 1806. 2., vermehrte u. verbess. Aufl. 8vo. Auflage Giessen 1803. (XXXII, 495 S.), 2. Auflage Giessen 1806, 3. Auflage 1818 (XXXX, 602 S.), 3. Auflage 1818 (XXXX, 602 S.), 4. Auflage 1822 (=XL, 539 S.), 5. Auflage 1827 (XXXXVIII, 624 S.) und 6. Auflage 1837 (LXXII, 688 S.), 7. postume, von Rudorff betreute Ausgabe Wien 1865 (VIII, 765 S.). First great writing by the then outside lecturer at Marburg University, which established the fame of Savigny throughout Europe in one fell swoop. The work embodied practically the perfection of German legal writing in the 19th century! A seminal piece of writing by the legal scholar who was only 24 years of age at the time of the first printing in 1803.\" Versand D: 2,00 EUR

A Treatise on the Diseases and Organic Lesions of the Heart and Great Vessels. Translated from the French, by C.H. Hebb

FIRST ENGLISH EDITION (the first edition in English was published in Philadelphia the previous year) of Corvisart?s classic work, the first ?comprehensive and systematic treatise on diseases of the heart? (the preface) in the English language.?Corvisart founded clinical cardiology and introduced percussion into the clinic after translating Auenbrugger?s book. He classed cardiac enlargement as active or passive aneurysm of the heart, and recognised the purring tremor as a sign of valvular obstruction but did not listen to the heart. His Essai was the first treatise on heart disease to conform to the pattern of a text-book and deal systematically with pericarditis, myocardial disease, carditis and aneurysm. He was physician to Napoleon and a reputed bon viveur The first edition of Corvisart was written by Horeau from lecture notes, but later editions were by Corvisart himself? (Evan Bedford Catalogue).See G&M 2737 (first edition, in French, of 1806): ?Corvisart really created cardiac symptomatology and made possible the differentiation between cardiac and pulmonary disorders.?Bedford catalogue 364: ?Hebb?s translation of the second French edition, now very rare.? This edition is much rarer than the French original or the American edition. See also Willius & Keys, Cardiac Classics, pp. 279-290, and Lilly, Notable Medical Books, 159.8vo, pp. xx, xxxvi, 404.         A NEW SYSTEM of DOMESTIC COOKERY formed upon Principles of Economy and adapted to the use of Private Families

Murray and Harding, London 1806 - VG text block in FINE modern full brown morroco rebind. Gilt lettered red leather title/author spine labels. 8vo, xx,290pp. Bebound without binder's ticket, and without original pre/postlims. First original leaf is half title, then frontis, title page, advertisement (with errata on verso). Last text page states "THE END" and "C & R Baldwin, printers New Bridgestreet, Blackfriars". Same printer's credit on half title verso, but with London, not Blackfriars. Frontis's extreme bottom margin states: "Nov 1st, 1805, by J Murray", tho facing title page dated 1806. Text block had been trimmed a small amount when rebound. Text quite nice, collated complete. Few turned corners but no tears or chips, however small, EXCEPT half tp fore edge with few shallow chips. Next page, frontis, has one 1/4" closed tear. Scattered light foxing. No aging, thumbprints or food stains. Last 60 pages damp stained at extreme top front corner. "Katharine Browningg 1806" neatly inked on half tp. The 2nd "g" is not a misprint on my part. Very scarce, Worldcat lists copies in four libraries. "Google" finds none, nor any mention of one having been listed or sold. ABPC lists three copies sold in last 100 years, two recently, a 3rd in the 60s. This copy the source for the Fort Niagara 1998 reprint by Professor R. Arthur Bowler of the University of Buffalo whose copy of the 1998 reprint included. A book review of the reprint states Bowler himself owned an 1806 1st ed. Reprint's preface states that the 1806 came into his hands from his mother about 1978, but he'd no idea how long his mother had had it. He states it had been held together with a rubber band, so the rebind likely dates to 1998. VG book in FINE rebind. R. Arthur Bowler bookplate inside cover. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Broadside. Begins, "To the electors of the Western District. Fellow-citizens, In a few days you will again be called upon to exercise the distinguishing privilege of Freemen — that of electing your Representatives to the Legislature. In discharging this duty, the great body of the people only want correct information, and they will generally choose the most able and faithful men to legislate for them.".

New York state: no publisher/printer Folio (39 cm, 15.5"). [1] f. (verso blank).. [1806?] A wall posting of the so-called "Lewisites" or "Quids," the faction of the Democratic-Republican party that supported Gov. Morgan Lewis of New York against the faction led by New York City Mayor DeWitt Clinton. This supports four candidates, "friends of the present administration [i.e., Gov. Morgan Lewis]," to fill vacancies in the Western District of the New York State Senate; the candidates, all former members of the state assembly, are Freegift Patchin, of Schoharie, Evans Wharrey, of Herkimer, John McWhorter, of Onondaga, and Joseph Annin, of Cayuga. Their names are printed at the end, followed by the words "The People's Choice" in bold letters. Included are attacks on the character of the opposing candidates, Salmon Buell, John Ballard, Nathan Smith, and Jacob Gebhard, and of particular interest is a spirited defense of the controversial Merchants' Bank. => An interesting window into the factional struggles within the party and the growing dominance of the western district in state politics. Text printed in double columns. Rare: We fail to trace any copies via OCLC. As issued, with old folds. Short tear and spot in blank area of inner margin. A clean, very good copy.

The first volume gives a general introduction to the country, treating its geography, topography, climate, ethnography, politics, education, religions, etc., and the other five volumes contain the history itself, which is divided into 20 chapters starting with the discovery of Japan by the Portuguese in 1542. Several parts, especially those concerning natural history, are drawn from Kaempfer. With manuscript bookplate of Cournault on each pastedown and page numbers added in pencil to the index of volume one. Restored tear in two plates and some occasional spots throughout, otherwise a very good copy. The bindings also very good, with only the spines slightly worn.

Bound for William Stirling (1818-1878) in mottled morocco gilt-stamped to front cover with his arms (a bend engrailed with three buckles) surrounded by his family motto "Gang Forward," spine labeled "Juan de Arfe Varia Comensuracio Madrid 1806," marbled endpapers, edges gilt; (few plates foxed, otherwise clean and well-preserved). Stirling’s armorial bookplate to front pastedown beneath monogrammed bookplate "D.P." with chipmunk and two mice, and to rear pastedown the "Keir Arts of Design" bookplate. New Edition, corrected and augmented. Juan de Arfe y Villafañe, also known as the "Spanish Cellini," was a gifted goldsmith who came from one of the most important and influential goldsmithing dynasties in Spain. He was an influential Spanish engraver, goldsmith, artist, anatomist and author. Juan de Arfe’s Grandfather Enrique emigrated from Germany at the end of the 15th century and is credited with first popularizing the grand "custodias" of the 16th and 17th centuries. His son and grandson followed in his footsteps. Juan de Arfe’s book "De Varia Comensuracion" was first published in 1585 and each section focused on one of his subjects of expertise: geometry, human anatomy, animals, architecture and silverwork. Arfe later added, as in this edition, sections on birds, heraldry and sundials. Some of his work was from first-hand experience, as when he attended the flaying of corpses to gain material for the anatomy plates, and some was from other sources, such as Durer for the natural history engravings. Following his father’s death, Arfe moved to Valladolid, where he worked as a goldsmith, mostly for churches and cathedrals, making monstrances and other pieces for city churches including Ávila, Seville and Burgos. The section on goldsmithing contains engravings of many fine and elaborate pieces, most designed for ecclesiastical use. The sections on geometry and architecture also have special meaning for students of goldsmithing. Arfe viewed his silver designs as architecture in miniature and his aim was to lead his fellow goldsmiths back into the tradition of classical architecture. He was unaware that his ideas were helping to create a new style which later generations would christen the Renaissance. Rare. Worldcat locates only 6 copies in institutional collections in North America. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

      - (4), 111, (1)pp., 3pl. Paris, Courcier, An 1806, in-4, (4), 111, (1)pp, 3pl, broché, couverture rose d'attente de l'époque, mention manuscrite "M.

Diese Schrift STEFFENS‘, des neben J.W.RITTER bedeutendsten Vertreters romantischer Naturwissenschaft, gilt als „one of the classic expressions of the doctrines of the movement“ (Nicholas Boyle, Goethe, die Wahlverwandtschaften, S.57, in: Landmarks in the German novel, Bd.1, Bern 2007).

A rare pair of mezzotints after the work of Jan van Huysum: the 'last of the great Dutch masters' (Mitchell), the `Phoenix of Flower Painters' (Weyerman) "It is the fate of some painters to be celebrated in their lifetime only and to be disregarded by later generations. Other painters pass their lives in obscurity only to be acclaimd by a succeeding century. A few, a very few, achieve a fame which is universal in their own day, never falters, and remains unchanged today. Jan van Huysum is among them. To Weyerman. Van Huysum was the 'phoenix of Flower Painters'. To Vertue, writing of six paintings he saw in an Englsih collection in the 1740s, they were 'the most inimitable pictures that were ever seen'. In Van Huysum's lifetime the Kings of Poland and Prussia, the Elector of Saxony, Prince William of Hesse, the Dukes of Orleans and Mecklenburg, and Sir Robert Walpole were eager patrons. When Catherine the Great, thirty years after Van Huysum's death, wanted to buy the Walpole Collection, the greatest in England, a valuation was made by Benjamin West.on the evidence of saleroom results at the time he placed a fair valuation of 1200 pounds on the pair of Van Huysums. In the nineteenth century the Rothschilds and others were avid collectors. Today the very finest Van Huysums are not available. the only fair way to judge an artist is by assessing his success in what he set out to achieve. By such a yardstick Van Huysum is supremely successful. Jan, born at Amsterdam in 1682, was the eldest son and pupil of Justus van Huysum. Justus was the head of a family enterprise. with three younger sons assisting: Justus the younger, Jacob and Michiel. Their large-scale production met the demand for decorative flowerpieces. Jan did not choose to follow his father's example. From his marriage in 1704 until his death in 1749 Jan appears to have stayed in Amsterdam, but independent of the family. He jealously guarded his success. working in strict privacy that none might see the preparation of his pigments nor how he worked. He is said to have worked from the real flower and gone to Haarlem each summer to study specimens. Van Huysum possessed an unerring elegance of composition which enabled him to avoid the inbalance, the over-abundance that others risked. The artist left no word, no indication of how he really painted, no hint of his own philosophy. So the wondrous skills of Jan Van Huysum, the last of the great Dutch masters, leaves us as bemused as those of his predecessors a century and a half earlier." (Peter Mitchell European Flower Painters pp.142-149). This pair of exquisitely accomplished mezzotints was done by Johann Peter Pichler (1765-1806) and printed in Vienna. According to Delaborde, "his [Pichler's] fruit and flower pieces after van Huysum rival the materpieces of Earlom after the same painter." This statement is quite true, however , examples of Pichler's pair are considerably more scarce. It is interesting to note that Pichler studied mezzotinting with Jacobé in Vienna, who had studied under the great mezzotint masters in London in the 1780's. The art of mezzotint enjoyed a revival in Vienna in the early 19th century. The original paintings were at one time in the Czernin collection. The Still Life with Bird's Nest is now in the Scottish National Gallery, the other painting is presumably in private hands. Delaborde, p. 307; British Museum Collection items 1861.1109. 113 & 114; Hollstein 24 (after Huysum); Pichler 36. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Osaka 1806/Meiji period, Yanagiwara. Stitched wrs., orange. & buff, 5 vol set, very good, profuse color illustrated wood. block printed, vol. 1,2 1806; vols. 3, 4, 5, Meiji reprints,. 1881-82, 26+19+23+17+20 double folded leaves. Nice Mixed Set. * This is a famous work, by the celebrated botanical artist Tachibana Morikuni [ca. 1670?-1748]. This superb work has often been confused with the author's son, Tachibana Yasukuni and his book due to its similar format and content, with the same title. The fact that Morikuni's book was also republished posthumously as late as 1760 adds to the bibliographic confusion. *** This work is one of Japanese botany's most interesting and charming works of old times. Each of the multitude of very good illustrations show 190 different varieties of wild flowers & native plants, each named and labeled in shown in natural "Insitu." * A virtual dictionary of Japanese mountain plants. One of the more valuable reference points of this book is that it also is a major pharmacopoeia and cross reference for other Japanese medical books. These refer to many of these plants, for the making of prescriptions, this being an illustrated dictionary of those [& all other plants] that graphically illustrate them as found in natural settings. * Books of this subject nature, which show and name exceptionally large amounts of plants must be considered as historic botanical treasure. They record faithfully what the plant looked like from hundreds of years ago in their various seasons. * SIZE: The book is 15.2 x 22 cm. Original covers, being a "mixed" set. Volume one is the original 1806 edition, bound in orange; vols. 3, 4, 5 are buff covers the Meiji edition. All have title slips, all clean, solid, color illustrated. See bibliography below for more details. None of the bibliographies lists the Meiji edition, but what we can gather from the colophon in the back of volume 5, the reprint edition appears to be Meiji 15, 16 [1881-1882], carved by Hasegawa, published in Osaka. * The work was hand-printed, on hand-made Washi Masa paper. ***** REFERENCES: Kenji Toda in his DESCRIPTIVE CATALOGUE OF THE JAPANESE & CHINESE ILLUSTRATED BOOKS IN THE RYERSON LIBRARY OF THE A.I.C. cites this book on p.319 but gives the more common reading of the title as: EHON NOYAMA GUSA, with a secondary attribution to the artist [author] as Hokkyoo Yasukuni [same author but using his "studio" name. But mistakenly cites the author/artist as Tachibana Yasukuni, the son. His collation matches exactly with our copy, which was first published in 1755, thus, this is the 1806 reprint of that edition and is so noted in the colophon at the back of volume 5. * BIBLIOGRAPHY: * E. Merrill & E. Walker: A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF EASTERN ASIATIC BOTANY, p.561 for their entry which attributes this work to Yasukuni. * Kenji Toda: DESCRIPTIVE CATALOGUE OF THE JAPANESE & CHINESE ILLUSTRATED BOOKS IN THE RYERSON LIBRARY OF THE ART INSTITUTE CHICAGO, p.319, with a secondary attribution to the artist [author] as Hokkyoo Yasukuni [same author but using his "studio" name. * Yu-ying Brown: JAPANESE BOOK ILLUSTRATION, p.48, color plate #44, copy found in the British Museum * H.
