Paris, Courcier, An 1806. DSB III-78. Sotheran n° 698; Poggendorff I-381

ZARGUEIDA, DESCOBRIMENTO DA ILHA DA MADEIRA,

      - POEMA HEROICO, DEDICADO AO ILLUSTRISSIMO, E EXCELENTISSIMO SENHOR CONDE DE VILLA VERDE, Grão Cruz da Ordem de S. Tiago, Cavalleiro da Ordem do Tozão de Ouro, do Conselho de Estado do PRINCIPE REGENTE N. S. Ministro assistente do Despacho do Gabinete de S. A. R., seu Gentil Homem de Camara, Presidente da Real Junta do Commercio, &c., &c., &c. POR SEU AUTHOR FRANCISCO DE PAULA MEDINA E VASCONCELLOS. LISBOA. M. DCCCVI. [1806] NA OF.

Die von Scott bewunderte Lyrikerin und Dramatikerin war "one of the most distinguished writers in an age prolific in good authors". – Gering stockfleckig. His greatest interest was in "improving and perfecting the rocket as a military weapon. England subsequently adopted 'Congreve rockets,' which were used with great success against the French at Boulogne, Copenhagen, Leipzig, and elsewhere. They were copied by most European armies by 1830."-D.S.B., III, p. 388. Congreve began to experiment with rockets at the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich in 1804. With official backing, "Congreve's rockets were rushed into production at Woolwich. His role was essentially in their development and manufacture, though in the early years of their production he sometimes directed their use in combat. They were first used in Sir Sidney Smith's naval attack on Boulogne in November 1805, which Congreve accompanied. With bad weather, the attack failed, and this was followed in Britain by much criticism of rockets. In 1806 Congreve replaced paper-cased by iron-cased rockets. The latter were used, directed by Congreve, in Captain E. R. Owen's attack on Boulogne in October 1806 and were considered by the British to be successful, though apparently with insufficient evidence of the damage inflicted."-ODNB. Fine copy and rare. .

Stamperia Reale, 1806. Un volume in 4to grande, elegante legatura in mezza pelle dell'epoca con tassello e titolo in oro al dorso, bellissimi tagli marmorizzati, pp. XXXVI, 633, (1). Testo in italiano, francese e latino stampato su due colonne. Ex - libris inciso dell'epoca C.G. Munarini.

Broadside. Begins, "To the Republican electors of the Western District. Fellow-citizens, At the same time that a bold and aspiring faction at the seat of government of the United States, is making the most daring and unprincipled attack upon the president and the friends of his administration, we find another faction actuated by the same motives, and impelled by the same spirit, commencing an attack upon the administration of this state.".

New York state: no publisher/printer Folio (verticle chain lines; 41 cm, 16.5"). [1] f. (verso blank).. [1806?] A wall posting of the so-called "Lewisites" or "Quids," the faction of the Democratic-Republican party that supported Gov. Morgan Lewis of New York against the faction led by New York City Mayor DeWitt Clinton. It is a direct reply to a handbill circulated by "A Republican of 1776," who assailed the character of three candidates for State Senate in the Western District, Evans Wharry, Freegift Patchin, and Joseph Annin. Much of the text presents a defense of the incorporation of the Merchants' Bank. Printed in triple columns. Rare: We fail to trace any copies via OCLC; only one holding listed in Shaw & Shoemaker. As issued, with old folds, edges slightly irregular. Two tiny holes within text, at the point where two folds intersect, and costing only a portion of two letters. Fingernail-sized stain. Four words have been redacted by the previous owner in ink, but can still be easily read.

Conversations on Chymistry, in which the Elements of that Science are Familiarly Explained and Illustrated by Experiments, and Plates - Two volumes in one

Philadelphia: James Humphreys, 1806. First American Edition. Leather bound. Very Good. First American Edition. [4], xi, [1-blank], [13], 14-429, [1-blank], [1 - ads] pages plus 11 plates. 12mo (4 1/2 x 7 3/8). First American edition. Modern brown textured leather; dark blue spine label (new endpapers). Previous owner name at top of title page. First dozen leaves with dampstaining, turned corners. Marginal dampstaining towards the rear of the textblock. Title page browned. Paper lightly browned throughout with occasional foxing, most prominently on the plates and surrounding pages. Leather bound. "The First edition of one of the most popular introductory chemical textbooks ever written. Born in London of Swiss parents, Jane Marcet (nee Haldimand, 1769-1858) married Alexander John Gaspard Marcet in 1799. Although published anonymously, this work was quickly recognized to be by Mrs. Marcet. It is written in an easy dialogue style, in which Marcet ("Mrs. B") instructs two young ladies ... in the principles and discoveries of modern chemistry...Evidently printed in very small number, the first edition is rare. Most copies were handled by young people and were literally read to pieces." (Neville, referencing the 1806 London edition)." Michael Faraday as a young man working in a bindery happened upon Marcet's work and credited it with establishing his first foundations in chemistry. "So when I questioned Mrs. Marcet's book by such little experiments as I could find to perform, and found it true to the facts as I could understand them, I felt that I had got hold of an ancor in chemical knowledge and clung fast to it. Hence my deep veneration for Mrs. Marcet..." (Smith, Old Chemistries, pp. 68-69. quoting from a Faraday letter to de la Rive") This first American edition is in our experience nearly as scarce as the London edition. Edgar F. Smith, when he wrote his book on Old Chemistries (1927) wasn't able to find a copy. It is not found in the Neville Collection, nor in Cole, Duveen, or Bolton. Rink, E. Technical Americana, 660. Chalmers, and Others. ____________________________ To Which are Added Now for the First Time Published Some Original Letters with Additional Observations, and Memoirs of the Life of the Author Ten Volumes Complete New Edition

London: Printed for J Johnson J Nichols and Son et al. 1806 - Printed for J. Johnson, London New Edition . Ten Volumes. London 1806., 1806. Modern spines with contemporary polished tree calf boards, gilt letter labels between five raised bands to the spines, gilt decorations to the spine with a gilt volume number. 8vo 9½'' x 6''. Twenty two single-sided monochrome illustrations. Pope was a London born poet, satirist, and translator of Homer. Bowles laid down certain canons as to poetic imagery which, subject to some modification, were later accepted, but were received at the time with strong opposition by admirers of Pope and his style. The controversy brought into sharp contrast the opposing views of poetry, which may be roughly described as the artificial and the natural. Bowles maintained that images drawn from nature are poetically finer than those drawn from art; and that in the highest kinds of poetry the themes or passions handled should be of the general or elemental kind, and not the transient manners of any society. A handsome and scarce set. Lovett had an extensive book collection, mainly comprising early English bibles, and catalogued the biblical section of the John Rylands Library before it was opened to the public in 1900. First published in 1755, Johnson's Dictionary has at various times been called "the most important British cultural monument of the eighteenth century" (Hitchings); "the only dictionary [of the English language] compiled by a writer of the first rank" (Robert Burchfield); "the most amazing, enduring and endearing one-man feat in the field of lexicography" (PMM); and the first genuinely descriptive dictionary in any language. "Johnson's writings had, in philology, the effect which Newton's discoveries had in mathematics" (Webster).
