A Voyage to Cochinchina, in the years 1792 and 1793. to which is annexed an account of a journey, made in the years 1801 and 1802, to the residence of the chief of the Booshuana Nation, being the remotest point in the interior of Southern Africa

London: (Strahan and Preston) for T. Cadell and T. Davies, 1806. 4to., (10 4/8 x 8 2/8 inches). 19 color-printed aquatint plates with additional hand-coloring, including one folding, by T. Medland after Samuel Daniell and W. Alexander, and two folding engraved maps, the first a hand-colored plan of the harbor and town of Rio de Janeiro, the second a "Chart of the Southern Extremity of Africa" (short tear to second map, maps and folding plate strengthened on fold versos, marginal repairs to 2 leaves of prelims, occasional soiling, a few very light spots.) Contemporary calf-backed boards, vellum corners (rebacked preserving original spine, extremities rubbed, endpapers renewed). Provenance: Note with a presentation inscription from the author laid down on the front paste-down "From the Author"; a few faint contemporary marginal annotations; Quentin Keynes (1921-2003) Collection of Important Travel Books and Manuscripts. First edition of the first illustrated English work on southern Vietnam, and is an account of Barrow's voyage to China with Lord Macartney's unsuccessful embassy to China. "The voyage visited Madeira, the Canary Islands, and Rio de Janeiro; a description of that city and of Brazil in general is given. Touching at Tristan da Cunha, the ship rounded the Cape and eventually reached Cochin China via the city of Batavia on Java. The volume is also of Cook interest as it describes finding Captain Cook's "Resolution" transformed into a smuggling whaler under the French flag" (Hill). The work is dedicated to Sir George Staunton, who was also on the voyage, and who wrote his own account in 1797. The supplementary article "An account of a journey to Leetakoo, the residence of the chief of the Booshuana nation" "covers an overland expedition from Cape Town to the interior of South Africa into the then little-known territory of Bechuanaland, translated from a manuscript journal by Pieter Jan Truter, one of the commissioners of the expedition" (Hill). Barrow continued in Lord Macartney's service after he was appointed governor in 1796 of the colony of the Cape of Good Hope. He married a South African Boer, purchased a house in Cape Town, and intended to settle there permanently, but was forced by the surrender of the colony at the peace of Amiens to return to England in 1804. Abbey "Travel" 514; Borba de Moraes I, p. 88; Brunet, I, p. 672; Cordier, "Indosinica", 2424; Cordier, "Sinica" 2390; Hill 66. Purchased at Christie's 7th April 2004, lot 26.         Observations upon the Marine Barometer, made during the Examination of the Coasts of New Holland and New South Wales, in the years 1801, 1802, and 1803. Read March 27, 1806.

London, W. Bulmer and Co., 1806. 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1806 - Part II. Pp. 239-268. Having also the titlepage to the volume (Part II, 1806). A faint bit of soiling to outer right margin of the first 2 leaves, otherwise clean and wide-margined.. First printing of this important paper relating Flinder's observations on the ship "Investigator" when exploring the coast of Australia. IN THE PAPER THE NAME "AUSTRALIA" APPEARS PROBABLY FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A SCIENTIFIC MEMOIR (p. 247).The name Australia was popularised by Matthew Flinders, who pushed for the name to be formally adopted as early as 1804. When preparing his manuscript and charts for his 1814 A Voyage to Terra Australis, he was persuaded by his patron, Sir Joseph Banks, to use the term Terra Australis as this was the name most familiar to the public. Flinders did so, but allowed himself the footnote:"Had I permitted myself any innovation on the original term, it would have been to convert it to Australia; as being more agreeable to the ear, and an assimilation to the names of the other great portions of the earth." In the paper offered he used the name "Australia" as early as 1806."Captain Matthew Flinders RN (16 March 1774 - 19 July 1814) was one of the most successful navigators and cartographers of his age. In a career that spanned just over twenty years, he sailed with Captain William Bligh, circumnavigated Australia and encouraged the use of that name for the continent, which had previously been known as New Holland. He survived shipwreck and disaster only to be imprisoned for violating the terms of his scientific passport by changing ships and carrying prohibited papers. He identified and corrected the effect upon compass readings of iron components and equipment on board wooden ships and he wrote what may be the first work on early Australian exploration A Voyage to Terra Australis."(Wikepedia)

        [Christ Trampling on Satan]

[London: circa 1806-1808, but printed by Edward J. Shaw in circa 1903]. Engraving, by Thomas Butts, after Blake. Laid paper. First and only state. Hand written in ink, upper right corner "Cent quatre vingt septieme 187". 12 3/8 x 6 3/8 inches. 16 1/4 x 10 1/4 inches. A determined Christ walks over the vanquished Satan This fascinating engraving, after a Blake drawing, depicts a muscular and single-minded Christ with a bow in one hand and arrow in the other walking on the beard and chest of Satan, who despite his lifeless eyes reaches for Christ's bow. Blake's Christ is more reminiscent of Hercules or Gilgamesh than the Christ known to us through church iconography and his Satan reminds us more of Zeus than Christianity's Devil.Archibald Russell in The Engravings of William Blake (Houghton Mifflin, 1912) that this image illustrates a passage in Paradise Lost (Bk.VI, 763), but was an allegory for the triumph of imagination or creativity over reason. Thomas Butts, senior (1757-1845) and junior (1788-1862), were both given drawing and engraving lessons by Blake starting in March 1806. They produced a number of plates from Blake's designs although his level of direct involvement can only be estimated. The present plate was sold by the Butts' descendants at Sotheby's, lot 20, 24 June, 1903. The plate was acquired shortly after the auction by Edward J. Shaw of Walsall. He apparently had printed a number of impressions by December 1903. These are the earliest recorded impressions of this plate (other than a single impression sold with the plate at the auction). The plate remained in Shaw's possession until 1925 when it was sold at Sotheby's (29 July, lot lot158) to Mansfield. The New York dealers E.Weyhe, bought a number of impressions (and possibly the plate itself) as they still had multiple copies for sale as late as 1965. Essick records 18 copies of this print, on various paper types, but no order of precedence is given, and he had not seen any `proof' impressions. Essick The Separate Plates of William Blake

Four volumes. 19th century marbled paper over flexible boards with large labels titled in manuscript to uppers. Occasional annotations. Bindings slightly worn. Minor browning, foxing and staining. In very good condition overall. . "The largest portion of Spohr's chamber music was for strings alone, ranging from 19 unsurpassed duos for two violins to four masterly, and largely unemulated, double string quartets. These, together with the 36 string quartets (and several other works for the same combination), seven string quintets and the String Sextet of 1848, display a number of common features. Spohr's own mastery of the violin is evident in all of them, and their technical difficulties, together with the particular style of performance necessary to secure their full effect, may partly explain their infrequent performance. The quartets, especially, fall into two distinct categories: solo quartets in the tradition of Rode (often entitled "Quatuor brillant"), which are essentially violin concertos with string trio accompaniment, and true quartets where the interest is more evenly divided between the instruments. At its most baneful, Spohr's virtuosity induced him to slip into predictable passage-work in the linking sections between the main tonal centres of his sonata form movement... There are, however, many examples of brilliance without vapidity in these works and his imagination seems particularly to have been stimulated by less usual combinations." Grove online
