PAGANINI, Nicolò 1782-1840
The present Serenata was composed between 1805 and 1808. Moretti and Sorrento: Catalogo Tematico delle Musiche di Niccolò Paganini, M.S. 16, pp. 50-51. Apparently the only autograph source for the work. The first edition, edited by Danilo Prefumo, was published in Padova by Libreria Musicale G. Zanibon in 1979 ("Pantheon Musicale" collana di musiche antiche italiane). Paganini wrote more than 100 works for the guitar. The present work is contemporary to his composition of the Sonata per Rovene per mandolino e chitarra, M.S. 14. Moretti and Sorrento pp. 45-47. Paganini received the beginnings of his musical education from his father Antonio, who taught him both the mandolin and the violin. "By his development of technique, his exceptional skills and his extreme personal magnetism he not only contributed to the history of the violin as its most famous virtuoso but also drew the attention of other Romantic composers, notably Liszt, to the significance of virtuosity as an element in art. As a composer of a large number of chamber works, mostly with or for guitar, Paganini was influential in furthering the performance and appreciation of music in private circles." Edward Neill in Grove Music Online. Camille Sivori (1815-1894) was an Italian violinist and composer. "A child prodigy, he received his first lessons from Restano, then studied violin with Paganini's former teacher Giacomo Costa, maestro di cappella at the cathedral of S Lorenzo... Between October 1822 and May 1823 Paganini was in Genoa, and, favourably struck by the young violinist, decided to give him lessons. … [Click Below for Full Description]

It is an account of economics at the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, as well as a rhetorical piece written for the generally educated individual of the 18th century - advocating a free market economy as more productive and more beneficial to society. "The Wealth of Nations had no rival in scope or depth when published and is still one of the few works in its field to have achieved classic status, meaning simply that it has sustained yet survived repeated reading, critical and adulatory, long after the circumstances which prompted it have become the object of historical enquiry." - DN … [Click Below for Full Description]

STENDHAL
[Click Below for Full Description]

STENDHAL
1805. Fine. 10 Floréal 13 [30 avril 1805], 18,5x23,1cm, une feuille. - Stendhal's autograph letter addressed to his sister Pauline. 28 lines written with a fine writing in black ink. First name ""Pauline"" from the hand of the sender at the bottom of the letter. Inventory number ""36"" in ink from another hand. Two small traces of stamp and stamp, a small tear restored in the bottom margin of the page. A few tiny folds inherent in the enveloping of the letter. Rare and beautiful letter of Stendhal addressed to his sister Pauline, in which all the sensitivity of the young man and his love for the dramatic art shows more than twenty years before his big romantic successes. This letter comes from the correspondence between Henri Bayle, here twenty-two years, with his sister Pauline three years younger. This true epistolary liaison, which quickly took the form of a ""diary"" - Pauline's answers were rare - is an essential milestone in the constitution of the intellectual journey of the future Stendhal. Our letter, of a great lyricism, testifies to the strength of the bond uniting the young writer and his sister: ""Let's shake each other my good friend. We will never find anyone who loves Pauline as Henry, nor will Henry ever find a more beautiful soul than Pauline. ""The use of the third person and a lover vocabulary erects the young woman to the rank of alter ego, a sister-soul and even perfect mistress. The young Henri is then precisely under the yoke of a devouring passion for the actress Melanie Guilbert whom he met during his declamation classes at Dugazon: "" I'm going … [Click Below for Full Description]

A two volumes edition appeared at Vienna in 1807, and an Italian edition at Milan in four volumes with coloured plates in 1816. An English edition abridged, was printed in Sir Richard Phillips’ "collection of Voyages" 1806, before the translation of Ann Plumptre which appeared in 4to with different illustrations from those in other editions. This work is the first and probably the best of Pouqueville’s books on Greece. Pouqueville had joined the French expedition to Egypt as a medical man attached to the scientific commission. On his return to Italy in 1798 he was captured by privateers who landed him at Navarino. He was imprisoned at Tripoli for ten months and later was taken to Constantinople and confined to the prison of Seven Towers for two years. Although officially a prisoner of war he was able to move about during his stay in Tripoli; he studied modern Greeks, was able to make notes of his observations. He returned to France in 1801, produced his medical thesis on the plague, and wrote up this account … [Click Below for Full Description]

PLAYFAIR, WILLIAM
W. Marchant for Greenland and Norris, London, 1805. FIRST EDITION IN SCARCE ORIGINAL BOARDS OF PLAYFAIR'S INVESTIGATION OF THE CAUSES OF NATIONAL DECLINE - A PIONEERING WORK IN THE USE OF INFOGRAPHICS TO PRESENT ECONOMIC DATA. William Playfair (1759-1823) was a pioneer in the use of graphic techniques (such as time-series line plots, bar charts, and pie charts) to display statistical data; and in the work offered here, he used those techniques to explain and support his theories of the factors that lead to the downfall of nations and empires - theories that still resonate in current debates over national policy. On Playfair's Pioneering Work in Statistical Graphics: "The two great inventors of modern graphical designs were J.H. Lambert (1728-1777) , a Swiss-German scientist and mathematician, and William Playfair (1759-1823), a Scottish political economist. The first known time-series using economic data was published in Playfair's remarkable book, The Commercial and Political Atlas ." (Edward Tufte, The Visual Display of Quantitative Information.) "In 1786 and 1801, Playfair invented three fundamental forms of statistical graph-the time-series line graph, the bar chart, and the pie chart - and he did so without significant precursors. Hence he is the creator of all the basic styles of graph with the exception of the scatterplot, which did not appear until the end of the nineteenth century. A few examples of line graphs precede Playfair, but these are mostly representations of theoretical functions with data superimposed and are conspicuous by their isolation.
