        The Life of Mahomet.

Leominster, MA: by Salmon Wilder for John Whiting,, 1805. With sketches of the reigns of his successors, Abubeker, Omar, Othman, and Ali. From the Decline & Fall of the Roman Empire. Duodecimo in half-sheets (140 x 87 mm). Contemporary calf, spine gilt-ruled in compartments, title gilt to second on black morocco label, Cataloguing slip pasted to front pastedown. Headcap chipped, corners worn, browning, old label sometime effaced from pastedown, short closed tear to bottom edge sig. L2 touching text to no loss, pagination on p. 163 corrected in manuscript, still a very good copy in an unsophisticated contemporary binding. First separate edition of the biographical sketch considered "the beginning of the movement for the rehabilitation of Muhammad" among Western scholars (Watt). Though Gibbon had little or no Arabic, he was able to consult a variety of translated sources including Sale's Qur'an, Pocock's edition of Bar Hebraeus, Simon Ockley's History of the Saracens, and various editions of Abu'l-Fida'. "Gibbon rejected many myths about Muhammad as 'vulgar and ridiculous' and chided [Humphrey] Prideaux and others for 'maliciously exaggerating the frailties of Muhammad' but agreed with their verdict - that 'in his private conduct, Muhammad abused the claims of a prophet' Â… Nevertheless, three aspects of Gibbon's work justify Watt's statement: his careful use of Islamic sources, his more positive appraisal of Muhammad's pre-hijrah ministry, and his recognition of Islam's contribution to 'the cultural and intellectual history of mankind', which was much disputed by many who claimed expertise in all things Arabic" (Bennett, In Search of Muhammad, p. 100).

Paris: J. J. Fuchs, 1805. Five volumes, octavo, one large folding table and one engraved plate, bound with all half-titles and corrigenda sheets, with the early purple library stamps of the "Bibliothek von Eichen" with the oak leaf device; a most attractive untrimmed set in contemporary half vellum over pink marbled boards, morocco spine labels. One of the great overlooked books of Australian natural history: Dumont de Courset's book is dedicated to the Empress Josephine and her garden at Malmaison, and provides the best practical guide to the exotic plants actually being grown in France at this early date. By the time the fifth volume was published in 1805, scores of Australian plants were being cultivated, and the book prints the author's interesting notes on how they have to be tended. The most significant inclusion is Dumont de Courset's "Essai sur la naturalisation des Plantes des Terres Australes", a discussion of the cultivation of Australian plants in Europe which was clearly intended to influence future voyagers and the way in which exotics were collected.George Louis Marie Dumont de Courset (1746-1824) was a French gardener and botanist. Walking away from an early career in the military, Dumont de Courset established an extensive garden near his home-town of Boulogne-sur-Mer, where he studied both botany and agricultural techniques. Le Botaniste Cultivateur is his magnum opus, a sweeping study of the subject which, among much of interest, includes a long account of the gardens at Malmaison, a discussion of the latest news from London, right through to comments on the cost of exotic plants and hints on how to grow them. Particularly noteworthy is his extensive list of plants, which gives the best and most thorough account of where and how exotics were being grown in France. A note in the first volume reveals that most of his plants derive from the collections of Cels at Montrouge; the famous Parisian seed-merchants Vilmorin-Andrieux at Quai de la Mégisserie; seed and nurserymen Gordon, Dermer & Thompson at Mile End in London; and Groenewoud, Voorhelm & Co. in Harlem. Le Botaniste Cultivateur described almost 7,000 species; it was re-issued in a revised and expanded second edition in 1811.The first half of the first volume includes notes on the practicalities of setting up a garden, an introduction to the medical properties of plants, and an overview of botanical terminology and the methodology of Jussieu. The second half, and indeed most of the following three volumes, give a detailed listing of plants which does include some Australian plants such as several Banksias, Melaleucas and the familiar Eucalyptus obliqua. While these notices are interesting for such an early date (the first four volumes of the work were all published in 1802), it is the fifth volume which has the most tangible interest. Published in 1805, the last volume shows how Dumont de Courset had become an integral part of the grand network of French gardens centred on Malmaison. It begins with a fulsome two-page dedication to Josephine, and her magnificent garden at Malmaison. By now Dumont de Courset had also had the opportunity to peruse the latest works by Cels, Ventenat and Redouté, and singles out Ventenat in particular for his personal thanks and for the work he had done at Malmaison: the two men were evidently known to each other. He is also now able to describe actual plants that have been growing in his garden for a couple of years (at least), including notes which also comment on the practice of growing the plants in the northern hemisphere. In his description of the six varieties of Hakea, for example, he notes that the plants are growing but he has not yet managed to get any of them to flower. The Banksia ericafolia is "easy to grow", and several include notes about how they have only just become known and cultivated in Europe. This fifth volume also includes the very important "Essai sur la naturalisation des Plantes des Terres Australes" (pp. 437-450), which includes his expert notes on how to grow Australian plants, as well as comments on the plants brought back by Banks. In this essay Dumont de Courset discourses on the climate of New Holland, making a comparison with that of the Cape and Florida. He gently chides the "voyageurs" - although not explicitly mentioned, Baudin's men would have been uppermost in his mind - for revealing the location from which the plant was taken, but nothing about the precise nature of the actual landscape or the soil, criticial details in the successful cultivation of exotics. He also makes the observation that it is a shame that the voyagers did not better interrogate the Aborigines about the qualities of the plants, because they would be sure to know much about their local flora, just as Cook made sure to discover how Pacific islanders used their local trees to make clothes, canoes and houses ("Nous pourrions encore regretter que les voyageurs ne nous eussent pas instruits des proproiétés des plantes qu'ils ont apportées…

Contemporary half calf, spine gilt with wine red title-labels. Edges somewhat vagued, board at frontside also rubbed. 570 pages. 23 engravings by Hendrik Schwegman and H.Roosing and a folded map of France. Very nice, rare account of the travels of Adriaan van der Willigen through France. First 'modern' Dutch account of Paris. In 1802, the author , at the age of 37 went for a long journey through France, Italy,Oostenrijk, Switzerland and Germany and returned to Holland three years later. He could afford it because of a huge inheritance of his grandmothert hat made it possible for him to devote his life to arts, culture and travel. He was raised in a conservative Royalist family, but at certain age felt sympathy for the democratic patriots-movement. He was very curious about the revolutionary Paris in those days and so it became his first destination. Het took the usual route from Antwerp, Brussels, Valenciennes, Peronne and Roye. He would stay no less than two years in Paris and wrote a fascinating portrait of the city. He writes about the houses of the Parisians, about their fashion, their way of living , the bathing in the Seine and inside their homes, about food, religion etc. He also wrote about the political system of France, and about science and arts. This first edition was banned by the later French authorities in Holland. (Source: http://www.defranseverleiding.nl ).         Evraq-i Perishan [Title in Persian] Moral Aphorisms in Arabic, and a Persian Commentary in Verse,

London: by S. Rousseau,, 1805. translated from the originals. With specimens of Persian poetry. Likewise additions to the author's conformity of the Arabic and Persian with the English language. Octavo (227 × 141 mm). Untrimmed in original pink paper boards with title printed in black to covers, rebacked and recornered late c.19th in dark purple roan with new yellow surface-paper endpapers, rolled bands gilt to spine forming compartments, second and third gilt-lettered direct. Bookplate of Harold Blundell to front pastedown. Front joint skilfully restored, superficial cracking to skiver along spine, extremities worn, staining to front cover, rear cover rubbed, foxing to title-page and earlier leaves, scattered light spotting otherwise. A good copy only. First and only edition, commercially very scarce work translated from a 16th-century manuscript and once identified identified as a formative influence on the oriental yearnings of the young Lord Byron, a thesis which has since proved controversial as no explicit reference to the text has yet been identified in Byron's writings (Cochran, ed., Byron and Orientalism, p. 71). Stephen Weston was a noted antiquarian and classical scholar. The final section of the present text is an addendum to his Specimen of the Conformity of the European languages, particularly the English, with the Oriental languages, especially the Persian, published in 1802. He also wrote a partial translation of the Shah Nameh and compiled an anthology of Persian distiches.

1810 was the year that saw the first printing of a complete Testament in French in the U.S.-- a Catholic one was then issued in Boston for use among French Canadians and French émigrés. This edition came out the following year, and is both the second French N.T. to have been printed in the U.S. and the first Protestant one. Provenance: 19th-century ownership stamp of "Hiram Bell" at top of title-page. Evidence of Readership: A few lines from Gray's "Elegy written in a Country Churchyard" are pencilled in English on a front blank ("Full many a flower is born to blush unseen . . ."); and "pour passer le temps" is pencilled in under the list showing the testament's order of books on the title-page verso!

Blaue Orig. //////////// Autograph score is at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin. First published, as Op.114, by André in 1805 according to the Neue Mozart-Ausgabe. The Maurerische Trauermusik (Masonic Funeral Music) in C minor, K. 477 (K. 479a), is an orchestral work composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1785 in his capacity as a member of the Freemasons. Mozart`s own entry into his catalogue under the heading \"July 1785\" must be considered in error; he most likely forgot to enter a new heading for November. It was performed during a Masonic funeral service held on 17 November 1785 in memory of two of Mozart`s Masonic brethren, Duke Georg August of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and Count Franz Esterházy von Galántha, members of the Viennese aristocracy. The work uses the Gregorian chant psalm-tone, tonus peregrinus. The work is scored for strings; woodwind instruments including two oboes, a clarinet, three basset horns and a contrabassoon; and two horns. The basset horn parts were written for fellow Freemasons Anton David and Vincent Springer. (Wikipedia) (= No. 2193), Preisangabe: Pr. netto 27 kr. Versand D: 5,00 EUR

A Voyage Round the World, in the Years 1800, 1801, 1802, 1803, and 1804; in which the Author visited the principal Islands in the Pacific Ocean, and the English settlements of Port Jackson and Norfolk Island

Richard Phillips, London 1805 - Three volumes, duodecimo, bound together in attractive contemporary tree calf, spine gilt with crimson label, a fine copy. Historically significant account of trading between New South Wales ports and the greater Pacific.Turnbull's book was the first serious account of commerce and trade originating from New South Wales. It was an influential book in promoting the idea of Australia as a venue for commercial success. A second edition was published eight years later as a single large volume.Turnbull and his partner Byers, envious of the profits being made by American traders, fitted out the Margaret for a speculative trading venture. They arrived in Sydney from the Cape of Good Hope in February 1801, and Turnbull gives a long description of the town, and the trading activities and agricultural prospects of the colony. They made similar stays in Tahiti and Hawaii (where they learned of Kamehameha's planned invasion of Kauai). Turnbull set up a business in Tahiti curing hogs with salt obtained in Hawaii. He is also remembered for the discovery of three islands in the Tuamotus. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
