Etude de Grosseiller epineux, et Fraise-Bigareau, ou Fausse Ananas

Paris: Vilquin, 1805. Stipple engraving, printed in colours and finished by hand by Ruotte. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling and a few small losses along the edge of the bottom margin. An exquisite plate from arguably the most beautiful botanical work ever produced, Collection des Fleurs et des Fruits, "a work of outstanding importance and interest." Contemporary with the work of Redouté, Collection des Fleurs et des Fruits is one of the earliest examples of stipple engraved and colour-printed botanical illustration. Published in 12 cahiers (or parts) of 4 plates each, the work was compiled to assist designers of porcelain and fabric, with the plates often showing flowers grouped together, usually matched according to their flowering season. The greatest collection of flower books to be sold at auction in the 20th century was the de Belder collection, sold by Sotheby's in 1987. The catalogue was intended as a true reflection of the uniqueness of the collection, and the cover illustration selected to represent the best of the best was an image from Prevost's Collection des Fleurs et des Fruits . Dunthorne describes it as, "a work of outstanding importance and interest...issued for the specific purpose of maintaining the great French tradition for excellence of design and draughtsmanship. Perhaps no other prints are more worthy of carrying on the tradition of Jean Baptiste and van Spaendonck than these fine examples of Prévost. Whether bouquets or sprays of flowers or fruit, they possess a splendour and freshness amounting almost to fragrance, which is largely due to the quality of the colour printing." (Dunthorne, p. 33) Cf. Dunthorne p. 229; cf. Great Flower Books (1990), p. 127; cf. Nissen BBI 1568; cf. Pritzel 7332; cf. Stafleu & Cowan TL2 8319.

Abraham Rees (1743-1825) was a British clergyman best known for this, his outstanding encyclopedic work, The Cyclopaedia. (Initially published 1802-1820 in parts in Great Britain.) Rees' work not only featured theological and humanistic issues, but also extensive articles on mathematics and natural sciences. The Cyclopaedia, "is the richest work for technology of the period, with detailed text and handsome, carefully prepared plates." Ferguson, Eugene. "Contributions to Bibliography in the History of Technology (part II)". Technology and Culture 3.2 (1962): 169 p. "Rees was convinced that the important progress made during the last decades of the eighteenth century, especially in the fields of history, geography, geology, natural history, and the physical sciences senu lato, required a new type of encyclopedia with the accent on these fields as well as the still relatively undeveloped domains of biography and the history of sciences. The Cyclopaedia thus became one of the first works of its kind to be compiled with the help of 'persons eminently distinguished in these branches of science to which they had devoted their talents.'" (Taxon Vol. 35, No. 2 (1986), 452-453.) Some of the notable contributors to this work were Charles Bruney on music; Charles Koenig, Robert Bakewell, and John Farey on geology; John Dalton and Humphry Davy on chemistry; David Mushet on metallurgy; William Pearson on astronomy; James Edward Smith, William Wood, William Fitt Drake and William Woodville on botany. "Rees Cyclopaedia is one of the first works to interpret correctly William Smith's ideas on strata identification on the basis of fossil organisms." Ibid. The Cyclopaedia included other notable recent scientific breakthroughs, such as Robert Fulton's Cast Iron Aqueduct (described in his 1796 book) which would become his notable steam engine. See also Ferguson, E. "Cast-iron Aqueduct in Rees's "cyclopaedia"". Technology and Culture 9.4 (1968): 597?600. Refs: BMC. vol 21, p. 287(1). Rink, E. Technical Americana, 121.

Sthlm, H. A. Nordström, 1805-06. 8:o. Grav. titelblad,(2),216 s.

Zweite verbesserte Auflage. Erster (- Dritter) Theil. In drei Bänden.

bei B.G.Hoffmann, Hamburg 1805 - I: XVI, 504 S.; II: XVI, 424 S.; III: XVI, 390 S., (1) Bl. Zweite vermehrte, Bd.3 erste Ausgabe (Hayn/G. IV, S.98). – Gelegentlich etwas stockfleckig. Wappenexlibris ALEX F.H.V. SECKENDORFF a.d. marmorierten Innendeckeln, Stempel der „Bibliothek Sugenheim“ a.d. No.1002). Study of Grapes, Peaches and Plums]

Paris: Vilquin, 1805. Stipple engraving, printed in colours and finished by hand by Ruotte. Very good condition. An exquisite plate from arguably the most beautiful botanical work ever produced: "a work of outstanding importance and interest". An especially successful Prevost still life, a harmonic combination of contrasting forms and colours. Contemporary with the work of Redouté, 'Collection des Fleurs et des Fruits' is one of the earliest examples of stipple engraved and colour-printed botanical illustration. The catalogue was intended as a true reflection of the uniqueness of the collection, and the cover illustration selected to represent the best of the best was an image from Prevost's 'Collection des Fleurs et des Fruits'. Whether bouquets or sprays of flowers or fruit, they possess a splendour and freshness amounting almost to fragrance, which is largely due to the quality of the colour printing" (Dunthorne, p. 33).       New Orleans, 1805. 20th-century buckram, gilt leather labels. One small ink stamp, small ink notation, and one embossed blindstamp on each titlepage, short horizontal tear to titlepage of the second volume, small marginal tape repair to F4 in the first volume, light staining to some leaves, occasional tanning, minor contemporary ink marginalia, bleedthrough from ink notations on verso of last leaf of second volume. Withal, a very good set. A rare and important set of the the first American laws printed west of the Mississippi. They encompass the first two session laws for the Louisiana territory under American rule, with the text printed in English and French on facing pages. In March, 1804, the Louisiana Purchase was divided into the Territories of Orleans (south of the present border of Arkansas and Missouri) and Louisiana (everything to the north and west, governed until 1807 by Indiana Territory). The influence of French and Spanish laws in North America is evident in these early territorial laws, as it took Congress more than two decades to determine their intent with regard to existing Spanish and French law. These imprints are the same as the second and third works bound with the COMPILATION of New Orleans laws in item 1587 in the Streeter sale. "At the first session of the Legislative Council 51 Acts and one joint resolution were approved, the latest on May 1, 1805; and at the second session 15 acts were approved, the latest dated July 3, 1805" - Streeter. Early Louisiana laws are especially rare; this is only the second time we've ever seen these imprints.

Erste Ausgabe der Bearbeitung (Goedeke VI,28,3 [Dorothea Schlegel]; Goedeke I,357,19.5). – Etwas gebräunt, etwas (finger-) fleckig. Exlibris GOTTHILF WEISSTEIN a.d. Innendeckel (Kat.Weisstein 5201), darunter handschriftl. Eintrag „WOLFGANG FROMMEL MCMXXXIV Berlin“ (s.u.). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A contemporary, and likely official, manuscript duplicate of Nelson's final words from his private diary before he was killed at the Battle of Trafalgar: his celebrated "last codicil," being his effort to have the government support his mistress, Emma Hamilton, and their child, Horatia

n.p., October 21,1805. 9.75" x 15.75". "Manuscript Document, 1 page, 9.75"" x 15.75"", ""Victory,"" October 21, 1805 [but accomplished at a later time], being a contemporary true copy, in a clerical hand, of Nelson's last written words, entered in his diary as the Battle of Trafalgar began, copied from Nelson's original manuscript. Paper watermarked ""1801"" and docketed on verso, ""Last Codicil of Lord Nelson 21 Oct. 1805"" Expected folds, minor chip at lower right margin, small slip at bottom margin neatly cut and then re-attached with archival tape on verso, else fine condition overall. An amazing contemporary copy of Nelson's effort to secure a pension for his mistress, Emma Hamilton, by crediting her with two major intelligence coups that contributed to the success of British arms over Napoleon. Dramatically headlined ""Victory ?" October the 21st 1805 then in Sight of the Combined fleets of France and Spain distant about ten Miles,"" Nelson writes, in full: ""Whereas The eminent services of Emma Hamilton Widow of the R[igh]t Hon[ora]ble Sir William Hamilton have been of the very greatest service to our King and Country, and to my knowledge without ever receiving any reward rom either our King our Country=. First that she obtained the King of Spains letter in 1796 to his brother the King of Naples acquainting her of his intention to declare War against England, from which letter the Ministry sent out orders to Sir John Jarvis to strike a stroke if opportunity offer'd against either the Arsenals of Spain or her Fleets, that neither of them was done, is not the fault of Lady Hamilton, the opportunity might have been offered.= Secondly the British Fleet under my Command would never have returned the second time to Egypt had not Lady Hamilton's influence with the Queen of Naples caused letters to be wrote to the Governor so Syracuse that he was to encourage the Fleet being supplied with every thing, should they put into that Post in Sicily.?" We put into Syracuse ,and received every supply, went to Egypt and dstroy'd the French Fleet; could I have rewarded those services, I would not now call upon my Country, but as that has not been in my power, I leave Emma Lady Hamilton therefore a Legacy to my King and Country, that they will give her an ample provision to maintain her rank in life. I also leave to the beneficence of my Country my adopted Daughter Horatia Nelson Thompson, and I desire she will use in future the name of Nelson only. ?" These are the only favours I ask of my King and Country at this moment when I am going to fight their battles. ?" My God bless my King and Country and all those who I loved dear. ?" My Relations it is needless to mention they will of course be amply provided for."" Below the clerk has added Nelson's signature: ""Nelson & Bronté"" as well as the witnesses to the codicil, Henry Blackwood (1770-1832) and Thomas Masterson Hardy (1769-1839). According to the Victory's chaplain Alexander John Scott, in an affidavit sworn in June 1806, the wounded Nelson confided to him: ""'I am dying Doctor remember me to Lady [Ham[ilton I have made a will and left her & Horatia a legacy [to my] Country."" Following Nelson's demise, Scott, together Captain Hardy, ""found in the escritoire [small writing desk] of the said Deceased a Book"" containing his final codicil. (Hudson, ed., Nelson's Last Diary, 1918, 28). Captain Hardy was entrusted with conveying the diary back to England where, according to one biographer, he was advised by government lawyers that it not be published as it freely discussed the actions of the Queen of Naples. Hardy left the paper with Nelson's brother, William in December 1805, retrieving it two months later in order to read to Lord Grenville, likely in an effort to obtain Parliamentary support for Nelson's final requests. Emma Hamilton's friends accused Nelson's brother William of withholding the document from her until he had secured generous provisions for himself and his family from Parliament. When he finally presented it to Lady Hamilton, William was said to have thrown it across her during an interview saying, ""Do what you like with this..."" (Hudson, ed., Nelson's Last Diary, 1918, 38-39).Despite the efforts of Captain Hardy and other friends, Parliament did not bestow any honors or a pension upon Lady Hamilton or Horatia?"despite Nelson's final and most earnest request. Lady Hamilton lived off the small inheritance that Nelson had bestowed upon her in a previous codicil, but soon fell into heavy debt?"in part due to her efforts to maintain Nelson's estate, Merton Place, as a monument to the fallen hero. Destitute, she spent a year in debtor's prison before fleeing to Calais in an attempt to elude her creditors, where she died in 1815.Rare. Material related to the H.M.S. Victory and Nelson's death at Trafalgar is extremely desirable. The original paper wrapper in which Capt. Hardy housed Nelson's final diary fetched nearly $25,000 at auction (Sotheby's, London, October 21, 2002, lot 77). The exact circumstances surrounding the production of the present copy are unknown, but it is quite likely that it was produced for the use of Emma Hamilton. "

A practical treatise on brewing, distilling, and rectification, with the genuine process of making brandy, rum, and Hollands gin, the London practice of brewing porter, ale, and table beer, the method of brewing country ales, &c.

London: Robert Scholey 4to (27.5 cm, 10.9"). xxxii (half-title lacking), 307, [1], 248, 135, [1], 183, [1] pp.; 8 plts. (1 fold.), 5 fold. tables.. 1805 Without a doubt, this is one of the most prominent English works on brewing and vinting of its time, present here in its first editon. Shannon, a physician whose first name is given as Robert by some sources and Richard by others, promotes a scientific approach to utilizing chemistry and methodical processes rather than guesswork or tradition; each section of his exhaustive treatment of the subject provides not only definitions, recipes, and instructions for all sorts of eventualities, but also comprehensive lists of varieties of beer, wine, and other spirits from different regions — so that Kingston ale, Brunswick Mum, spruce-beer, red ratafia, lemon wine, and vino tinto, as well as various cordials, essential oils, bitters, vinegars, and distilled waters, are present here alongside porter, Holland gin, cider, mead, sherry, etc. The author also gives histories of some of the primary types of spirits and liquors, along with details of viniculture, transportation of materials and products, etc. Gabler (Words into Wine) notes that while most writers consider Alexander Henderson's the first detailed account in English of modern wines, Shannon's work => predates Henderson's by 19 years. The volume opens with a list of the subscribers; each book has a separate title-page; and the text is enhanced with => eight engraved plates depicting equipment and five folding charts of various measurements and benchmarks. There are several pencilled annotations present in the margins, indicating practical and analytical-minded engagement with the text. Provenance: Front free endpaper with inked ownership inscription of the Hon. Henry Frederick Francis Adair Barrington, a South African lawyer, politician, and farmer; the inscription is dated 1877, five years before his death. 19th-century half navy straight-grain morocco with marbled paper?-covered sides, edges speckled brown, and spine with gilt-stamped title and gilt-ruled raised bands; rubbed at joints, sides, and board edges with front turn-in slightly pulled at head. Half-title lacking, leaf z1 in the appendix apparently a cancel, title-page with small edge nick, inked inscription and pencilled annotations as above with some final words of notes partially shaved. Some leaves, plates, and sections variously with creasing, foxing, corners bumped, or light to moderate waterstaining; perhaps three short tears; none of this frightful and the volume quite sound. Front pastedown with small ticket of a London bookseller. An important treatise designed to be used as a reference work and a copy of it that was used so.
