Carta in quattro fogli riuniti e montati su tela a stacchi. Orografia a tratteggio a luce zenitale. Confini a colori. Scale grafiche in miglia d'Italia. MARINELLI, Saggio, ecc., n. 1428.

A System of Mechanical Philosophy. With notes, by David Brewster.

FIRST EDITION. Robison, who died in 1805, was the principal contributor to the third edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. His articles included two on steam and steam engines, which were republished by James Watt, the famous engineer and inventor, in 1818, and constitute Watt's only publication on his inventions. The majority of Robison's articles as well as some other material are here republished, and the editor Brewster prevailed on Watt to bring the two on steam engines up to date with notes and additions. Robison was himself acquainted with Watt; indeed it was he who first directed Watt's attention to the steam engine, as Robison himself recounts in volume 2.The first volume is on dynamics, projectiles, corpuscular action (including Boscovich's theory), and strength of materials (a term he was apparently the first to use). The second includes the articles on steam, and hydraulics; the third is on astronomy, the telescope and pneumatics; and the fourth is on electricity, magnetism, sound, music, watch-work, and seamanship (Robison represented the Board of Longitude in testing Harrison's chronometer).Roberts & Trent, Bibliotheca mechanica, 280. Ekelöf 553. Wheeler Gift 791.Norman Catalogue 18394 volumes, 8vo, 3 leaves, pp. (v)-x, 713; 2 leaves, pp. (iii)-x, 708 [i.e. 712, page nos. 182-184 repeated]; 2 leaves, pp. 803; 2 leaves, pp. 684, and 50 folding engraved plates with numerous figures of machinery and instruments. Lacking a sub-title at the beginning of vol. 2 as in at least one other copy seen (NYPL). Paper of plates browned, occasional foxing (heavy in margins of some leaves of vol. 2). Contemporary half calf, spines ruled in gilt (but the gilt now dull), dark red morocco labels on spines, tips of corners a little worn. Small withdrawn library stamp on versos of titles.

1805 inventory including list of slaves in Louisiana

New Orleans, 1805. Very good condition. A manuscript inventory of partnership from the period in which Louisiana had just been sold by Napoleon to the United States, listing slaves owned by one of the leading members of the Acadian community, Michel Cantrelle, and his brother in law, Jean Baptiste Poeyfarre. The 13 page manuscript document, done in a legalistic style, lists 7 slaves owned by Cantrelle, and 10 owned by Poeyfarre. The Cantrelle slaves are: Etienne, Catiche, Jean, Jupiter, Liberte, [Priamure], and Julien. The Poeyfarre slaves are: Celestin, Etienne, Fanny, Francoise, Honore, Henriette, Lindor, Louise, Pierre and Jean Baptiste. The dollar values listed with each slave name are relatively low; perhaps these refer to monies they brought to the partnership from being rented out. Cantrelle (1750 - 1814), son of Jacques Cantrelle (a prominent indigo plantation owner) and Marie Marguerite Larmusiau, served as a lieutenant under his brother-in-law Captain Nicolas Verret in the Militia of the First Acadian Coast during the Revolutionary War. When Verret died in 1775, Cantrelle was appointed commandant of the district from Fort Vacherie to Ascension Parish. When Louisiana became part of the United States in 1803, Cantrelle was reappointed Commandant of the Acadian Coast by Governor Claiborne. In 1805 he was commissioned Parish Judge of the new parish of Acadia and in 1807 became the Judge of St. James Parish, a position he held until 1812. The document opens with a list of open accounts, arranged alphabetically by last name. Under "C" we see Michel Cantrelle listed as "Commandt as well as his father, Jacques Cantrelle, and other Cantrelle family members. The document concludes with a value of the unsold inventory of the enterprise: "Remis aussi a M. & Mme Cantrelle le 26 juin 1805, les marchandises invendues restantes au magazin ... a la somme de $2,404." 8 1/4 x 12 3/4", on laid watermarked paper.

Dos leggermente diluito - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale collective.

Plate 16.

Paris 1805 - Original stipple engraving, printed in colours and finished by hand, with strong colour, trimmed to just outside plate-mark, small tear to left side, otherwise a fine copy with clean, strong colours. Dimensions: 347 by 260mm (13.5 by 10 inches). From Levaillant's "Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets", which is considered the most comprehensive and complete catalogue on the subject. This magnificent work includes some of the most lively and colorful bird illustrations ever created. They capture not only the defining characteristics of the species, but also the charming personality of the individual bird. This exquisite monograph was written by Francois Levaillant, an adventurer and natural historian, who was one of the first to record sightings of Australian parrots. Barrband's skill was greatly esteemed and his name lent cachet to the sumptious work authored by Levaillant. Barraband's brilliantly colored engravings of exotic birds coupled with Levaillant's precise descriptions represent the height of realistic bird art. Jacques Barraband achieved great artistic notoriety for his work at the Gobelin tapestry works, the Sevres porcelain factory, and the palace of St. Cloud before coming to work for the French naturalist Francois Levaillant in the early years of the nineteenth century. Barraband collaborated with Louis Bouquet and Langlois to create the engravings for this work. The plates were carefully inked "a la poupee" with brilliant colors and pulled from the press. Nuances were then added by hand. In his work, Barraband often shows his subject in profile perched on a short tree branch. No other artist equalled his mastery in the rendering of feathers, in evoking their fragility, stiffness or incredible lightness. He displays a preference for harmonies of blues and greens, and reds and yellows. The evocative power of these realistic and precise bird renderings, that feature all the colors of the rainbow, is striking.

AFRICAN MEMORANDA Sierra Leone SLAVERY 1792

AFRICAN MEMORANDA Relative to an Attempt to Establish A BRITISH SETTLEMENT ON THE ISLAND OF BULAMA ( BOLAMA ) ON THE WESTERN COAST OF AFRICA IN THE YEAR 1792 With a brief notice of the neighbouring tribes, soil, productions &c. And some observations on the facility of colonizing that part of Africa, with a view to cultivation; and the introduction of letters and religion to its inhabitants: but more particularly as the means of gradually abolishing African slavery. Published in London in 1805, this is the First Edition of Philip Beaver's account of his attempt to set up a settlement on the island of Bulama, off the coast of Sierra Leone ( Guinea-Bissau ) Philip Beaver (28 February 1766 - 5 April 1813) was an officer of the Royal Navy, serving during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He played a varied and active role in several notable engagements, and served under a number of the most notable figures of the Navy of the age. Beaver was born in Lewknor, in Oxfordshire on 28 February 1766 to the Reverend James Beaver, curate of Lewknor. His father died when Philip was eleven, leaving the family impoverished. His mother accepted the offer of Joshua Rowley, then captain of HMS Monarch to take Philip to sea with him. Philip Beaver entered the Navy in October 1777, becoming midshipman aboard the Monarch during 1778. Whilst in this post, he witnessed the Battle of Ushant on 27 July 1778. He remained with Rowley and accompanied him when Rowley took command of HMS Suffolk in December 1778 and sailed her to the West Indies. Rowley was then appointed rear-admiral and hoisted his flag in a number of ships, including HMS Conqueror, HMS Terrible and HMS Princess Royal. Beaver followed him to each one, and in doing so served as part of fleets between 1779 and 1780 at times under the command of Admirals John Byron, Sir Hyde Parker and Sir George Rodney. His ship then came under the overall command of Sir Peter Parker at Jamaica, where Beaver spent the rest of the war. He was promoted to lieutenant by his patron, Admiral Rowley, on 2 June 1783. He spent the next ten years living with his mother at Boulogne. His naval service during this period was limited to a few months in 1790 and in 1791, during the mobilizations in response to the Spanish and the Russian armaments. AFRICA Beaver returned to a more active form of service in 1791 when he participated in a scheme for colonizing the island of Bulama near Sierra Leone. He departed England on 14 April 1792, but the affair quickly ran into difficulties. The settlers were described as idle and dissipated. Beaver was in command of the Hankey, a small ship with sixty-five men, twenty-four women, and thirty-one children, mostly seasick and all useless. Even after their arrival discipline was non-existent, and the directors of the project quickly lost heart and returned to England. Beaver was left in command and spent the next eighteen months attempting to make the settlement a success. Most the colonists died and the remainder abandoned the colony in November 1793 and made their way to Sierra Leone. Beaver went too, and obtained passage back to England, arriving at Plymouth on 17 May 1794. He was later to publish an account of his experiences, entitled African Memoranda in 1805, which contained his thoughts, which were anti-slavery in nature. THE BOOK book is bound in a contemporary three quarter leather binding with marbled boards and marbled page edges, the binding has be rebacked retaining the original spine leather, internally book is ILLUSTRATED with a LARGE FOLDING MAP measuring 26 inches by 29 inches, the map is partially hand coloured, also two full page plans, 500pp, bears the Armorial bookplate of its original owner, Arthur Maister of Kingston upon Hull, the bookplate is dated 1815 CONDITION the binding has some edge rubbing with some wear to the leather, as mentioned the book has been recased which means the leather joints are in good order with no cracking, internally there is a tear with no loss to the large folding map, and a small area of edge loss to the map with does not affect the printed area, some light foxing to a few pages else contents generally nice and clean A NICE EXAMPLE OF THE FIRST EDITION ON A CONTEMPORARY LEATHER BINDING COMPLETE WITH THE LARGE MAP AND PLANS

Paris: Vilquin, 1805. Stipple engraving, printed in colours and finished by hand by Ruotte. An exquisite plate of three sprays of variously coloured gillyflowers or stocks from arguably the most beautiful botanical work ever produced: "a work of outstanding importance and interest".Contemporary with the work of Redouté, 'Collection des Fleurs et des Fruits' is one of the earliest examples of stipple engraved and colour-printed botanical illustration. Published in 12 cahiers (or parts) of 4 plates each, the work was compiled to assist designers of porcelain and fabric, with the plates often showing flowers grouped together, usually matched according to their flowering season. The greatest collection of flower books to be sold at auction in the 20th century was the de Belder collection, sold by Sotheby's in 1987. The catalogue was intended as a true reflection of the uniqueness of the collection, and the cover illustration selected to represent the best of the best was an image from Prevost's 'Collection des Fleurs et des Fruits'.Dunthorne describes it as, "a work of outstanding importance and interest...issued for the specific purpose of maintaining the great French tradition for excellence of design and draughtsmanship. Perhaps no other prints are more worthy of carrying on the tradition of Jean Baptiste and van Spaendonck than these fine examples of Prévost. Whether bouquets or sprays of flowers or fruit, they possess a splendour and freshness amounting almost to fragrance, which is largely due to the quality of the colour printing" (Dunthorne, p. 33).Cf. Dunthorne p. 229; cf. Great Flower Books (1990), p. 127; cf. Nissen BBI 1568; cf. Pritzel 7332; cf. Stafleu & Cowan TL2 8319.

Autograph letter signed. Rome, 27 March [1805].

1805. 3 pp. 8vo. To an unnamed correspondent; address panel on verso of third page: "I have been deeply touched, dear Sir, by the feeling which inspired your article and I can say, without being influenced by my gratitude toward you, that there are some words in it that are remarkable not only for the elevation of thought, but I may add also for the soundness of judgment they indicate when you talk about my father. If you still read Le publiciste you must have seen in it a really touching letter. I may say that all that reaches me from Paris is in harmony with what I have been longing for. In the note on opposite natures, there is a line you wrote which I find extremely witty and true at the same time: there is no doubt that the big difference that exists between some souls, whose cause is unknown from us, makes it impossible for certain persons to understand each other ever and I think I would understand more easily the expression in the eye of some Persian than what some people say, even though they speak French. Thank you very much for giving me the hope that we will see each other in Milan. Your kindness to me makes you feel more attached to me: this is the sure sign of a generous nature. It is in six weeks probably that I will have the pleasure of seeing you again. I have enjoyed the arts and nature in the South of Italy, but my most tender affections were born when I first got to Milan, and returning there gives me a renewed pleasure, since you have shown me so clearly that my friends there have not forgotten me".

Ballads ... founded on Anecdotes relating to Animals, with Prints, designed and engraved by William Blake

first edition8vo.[2 (blank)], [8 (title leaf, preface leaf, a blank leaf, half or sub-title)], 212, [2 (contents and colophon)], [2 (blank)]pp., 5 plates by Blake (untrimmed and clearly exhibiting the plate mark), near contemporary maroon roan backed marbled boards, marbled paper over boards, edges untrimmed as issued, paper title label on spine lettered in faded ink manuscript, plain later endpapers, light water stain at the lower gutter side of the last 2 leaves (mainly evident on the terminal blank leaf) with very light marks at the same point on neighbouring leaves (including the last plate). leaves A4-A5 a little creased and dusty (as if the book may once have fallen open at that point), occasional other minor dusty smudges, generally a very good and pleasing copy. Bentley Blake Books, 465 The plates are signed below the images "Blake inv & s[c]' and have the imprint 'Pubd. [or Pub'd] june 18, 1805, by R. Phillips N[o]6 Bridge Street Black Friers". Plates 1 to 3 inclusive are in the second, more extensively worked, state. Plates 4 and 5 are in the first and only state. This copy has a comma (rather than a full stop) after 'BLAKE' on the title page (as in the copy at Princeton with plates 1 and 2 in the second state). This book is possibly a copy in the original boards that have at some later point in the nineteenth century been backed with maroon roan, and the boards covered with cloth and then with marbled paper and supplied with new endpapers, possibly by an amateur. The bookplate looks as if it may have been lifted from its original setting and relaid.

Autograph title-page of the overture of Der fliegende Holländer arranged for keyboard, with an autograph draft of the title page of Rienzi to verso, both incorporating Wagner's name in autograph

Unpublished. Not in Wagner-Briefe-Verzeichnis. Robert Friese (1805-1848) was, from ca. 1834 to his death, the companion of the Leipzig publisher and bookseller Robert Blum (1807-1848). Blum was executed as a revolutionary in Vienna on November 9, 1848; Friese died two days earlier (probably also by execution). Wagner sent Friese the title words of the [first] editions of his opera Rienzi and the overture of Der fliegende Holländer, in all likelihood to be used as an announcement (or advertisement) in a publication by Friese and Blum. The former edition was published, the latter distributed by Meser in Dresden later that year.. 1f. Quarto (287 x 230 mm.), with integral autograph address panel addressed to Robert Friese in Leipzig in another hand. In black ink. Handstamp "Dresden 21. Apr. [18]44;" postmark "Bahnpost Apr. [?]II 8-10.;" and seal: "K[öniglich] S[ächsische] Hof-Musikalienhandl[ung] v[on] C. F. Meser Dresden." With annotations in red crayon and blue pencil to verso. In German (with translation). With title of forthcoming editions of the overture of Der fliegende Holländer, arranged for piano 2-hands and 4-hands to recto and the same for an edition of the opera Rienzi to verso, both in Wagner's autograph and incorporating his name, with autograph corrections in Wagner's hand to the note regarding Rienzi. Slightly worn; creased at folds and slightly overall; several small edge tears; small triangular area of loss to blank right margin corresponding to opposing seal.

Magnificent Illuminated Manuscript - Circa 1890's - Sermon on the Mount/Bible

The Sermon on the Mount. Blindstamped calf over wooden boards, brass clasp, gauffered edges. Calligraphic title leaf, 62 illuminated pages on 31 leaves, all interleaved with 2 blank pages between each illumination. This is a magnificent illuminated manuscript by a woman calligrapher and illuminator. This was a popular and socially acceptable artistic endeavor for women throughout the Victorian era. A good deal of the work, like this book, is of exceptional artistic merit. It is surprising to me that more scholarship has not been done on this topic. With this book, the text is written in black letter with many illuminated initial letters within a 2" x 1.25" block. The text is surrounded by an integrated red, blue, and gold border. The border itself is extended by rich floral decorations augmented with delicate birds, vases, fruits, jewels, mice, butterflies, and other images. These beautiful marginal designs are by L.H. Bloxam. On a blank after the title leaf is a presentation "Henrietta Bloxam from her Mother H.L. Bloxam." The artist was most probably a relation of the Gothic revivalist, Matthew Holbeche Bloxam (1805-1888). The quality of the manuscript must be seen to be appreciated. The ornate binding has been sympathetically res-pined, else very good.

MANUSCRIPT LOGS of BRIG-SLOOP HMS" FOXHOUND " "COCKATRICE", COMMANDED BY PITT BURNANBY-GREENE

Foolscap Manuscript in several hands. Log of "Cockatrice", a hired brig, July 1805 to February 1807 ,[76] leaves, dos a dos with the log of HMS" Foxhound" from April 1807 to February 1808 [48] leaves. Contemporary blind ruled vellum notebook, ink titles on boards at each end for the relevant vessel. Loosely inserted notes include A Table of angular altitudes of different ships at sea the Eye being elevated at 24 feet; a memorandum of Dimensions of his Maj's Ship Prince of Wales ; an ink wash sketch of the stowage of stores in barrels aboard an unspecified vessel with a note of their weight. This seems to be the log of ships commanded by Pitt Burnaby Greene who took command of Cockatrice on 6 April 1805, with this log commencing on 7 July 1805."Cockatrice" was hired by The Royal Navy , built at an unknown shipyard.. She was a 12 gun Brig , hired on 6/8/1804 and disposed of back to her owners in 1808.Pitt Burnaby Greene and Cockatrice had a fairly eventful time together, patrolling British South coastal waters and accompanying convoys. In July 1805 Burnaby Greene chased a Lugger but was outclassed and gave up the chase. He boarded another Lug sail boat and a Dutch Galliot, afterwards reading the Order for military Discipline and the Act of War to the ship's company. On 21/7/05 he fired a gun at a ship, finding it to be from Londonderry bound for Dantzig, and spoke to another Danish vessel.On28th he boarded a Swedish Brig from Lisbon, and spoke to an American ship from Virginia. On 30/7/05 he spoke to a ship from Liverpool to Barbadoes and in the first week of August boarded the Hero cutter of Guernsey "on a cruize" and "fired several musquets" at a schooner at daylight. Burnaby Greene moves on to convoy duty; "made the signal for the convoy to close" and then fired 2 shots at one of the convoy for not obeying the signal, later taking the Unity in tow. The log gradually builds up a picture of active and aggressive patrolling and convoy support, but not without touching more glorious events. On Sunday 10th November, they come across HM Ship "Courageuse" with three French 74gun ships as prizes under Sir Richard Strachan.Whilst sailing off Cape Finisterre on 2 November 1805,[just after Trafalgar] Strachan's squadron encountered four French ships of the line that had escaped from the Battle of Trafalgar under the command of Rear-Admiral Dumanoir le Pelley. Sir Richard pursued them, bringing them to battle on 4 November. After a short engagement, known as the Battle of Cape Ortegal he captured all of them, completing the destruction of the French fleet. Off Deal ,in December Cockatrice "Found riding here the Monarch [ at the Battle of Copenhagen Monarch sustained the highest losses of any ship engaged in the battle ] Utrecht, Antelope and several Men of War" which no doubt dwarfed the Cockatrice. On 30th March 06, Burnaby Greene was off Ireland , with orders to take on board the prominent politician the 3rd Earl of Hardwicke, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from 1801-1805. At the other end of the book, we have the log of HMS "Foxhound".The Foxhound was a purpose built 16 gun Royal Navy Cruizer class Brig-Sloop . She was ordered for the Navy on 16/7/1805, her keel was laid down in August 1806 and she was launched on30th November 1806. Foxhound was built by John King at King's boat builders ,Beach Road, Dover, following a design by William Rule. Dimensions Length of Gundeck 100' 0" Length of Keel 77' 2 ?" Breadth 30' 7" Depth in Hold 12' 9" Draught Forward 7' 0" Draught Aft 11' 0" Burthen 384 26?94 Tons BM Gun Deck 16 British 32-Pound Carronade Bow Chaser 2 British 6-Pounder Crew Complement Date # of Men 1797 121 Design Complement Commanders 1807/03 1809 Commander Pitt Burnaby Greene 1809 1809/08 Commander James M'Kenzie† Petty Officers 1807/12 1808 Midshipman Edward Biddulph Service history 1806/12/08 Began fitting at Sheerness Dockyard 1807/07/17 Completed fitting at Sheerness Dockyard 1809/05/16 Sailed with a convoy for Quebec 1809/08 Lost in the Atlantic while returning from Halifax Pitt Burnaby Greene would have enjoyed his promotion to the newly built HMS Foxhound. As can be seen from the armament information above, she was armed with Carronades. The carronade is a short smoothbore, cast iron cannon, which was used by the Royal Navy and first produced by the Carron Company, an ironworks in Falkirk, Scotland, UK. It was used from the 1770s to the 1850s. Its main function was to serve as a powerful, short-range anti-ship and anti-crew weapon. Their lighter weight meant that smaller ships like Foxhound could pack a bigger punch over shorter ranges. The log begins with the ships carpenters still on board and with supplies being stowed on board. In late July, "Foxhound" made sail in company with a Convoy . In August she is off Cromer, where they "sent our boat to board a Brig to press but got no Men "."Pressing", or more correctly Impressment, refers to the act of taking men into a navy by force and with or without notice. It was used by the Royal Navy in wartime as a means of crewing warships. The Royal Navy impressed many merchant sailors, as well as some sailors from other nations. People liable to impressment were "eligible men of seafaring habits between the ages of 18 and 55 years". The Log continues with boardings [" Boarded an American Brig from NewYork to Amsterdam"] , ship cleaning, punishments [" Punished with 2 dozen lashes Wm. Bechford for contempt of his superior Officers"],and a burial [" At 12.30 departed with life Nicho. Olman... At 4.30 read prayers & buried the Body of the above in his hammock and 2 two and thirty pound shot"]. Foxhound also sails with the Inshore squadron and boards a Galliot from Charante to London and sends 4 men to navigate a Prize to England. In 1812 [and presumably recorded in another log], whilst commanding HMS Bonne Citoyenne , Burnaby Greene, by this time a Post Captain, was involved in events leading up to the action between USS Constitution and HMS Java. USS Constitution and USS Hornet found and blockaded him in the port of Salvador where his ship was undergoing repair. There remains a wealth of research in this manuscript. A rare survival from the heyday of the British Royal Navy. Visit our website on www.johnunderwoodbooks.com for other interesting books!
