        Théatre et poésie fugitives

Chez Duminil Lesueur 1805 - - Chez Duminil Lesueur, à Paris 1805, in-8 (12,5x20,5cm), (4) xxij, 348pp. et (4) 432pp. et (4) 418pp. (1) et (4) 199pp. (3) ; xvj, 101pp., 4 volumes reliés. - Edition originale collective. Lyrical Ballads, With Pastoral and other Poems. In Two Volumes

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, 1805. Fourth Edition. Leatherbound. Near fine. 2 vols.: lxiv, [2], 200, [4]; 248 p. 17 cm. Bound in leather with red and black spine labels. In marbled paper slipcase. Spines faded slightly. Signed by former owner on title page. A cornerstone of British Romantic poetry, these volumes complete the sequence that began with the first edition of Lyrical Ballads in 1798. Though called "Fourth Edition," Vol. II was really a third edition. Coleridge contributed four poems to this set, the last edition of Lyrical Ballads in which any of Coleridge's work was represented: The Foster-Mother's Tale; The Nightingale, written in April 1798; Love; The Ancient Mariner. A Preface by Wordsworth, introduced in 1802 edition, contains the poetical principles of the two poets. A former owner of this set, David, Baron Hume (1757–1838), was a Scottish judge and legal scholar whose work on Scottish law has had a deep and continuing influence. He is referred to as Baron Hume to distinguish him from his uncle, David Hume the philosopher.

African Memoranda: relative to an attempt to establish a British settlement on the Island of Bulama, on the western coast of Africa, in the year 1792. With a brief notice of the neighbouring tribes, soil production, etc. and some observations on the facility of colonizing that part of Africa with a view to cultivation; and the introduction of letters and religion to its inhabitants: but more particularly as the means of gradually abolishing African slavery.

Baldwin London 1805 - First edition. 4to., [viii], xv, 500pp., WITH A NOTE BY DOROTHY STANLEY TO DEDICATION LEAF, large folding map, 2 full-page engraved plans, later red half morocco gilt by Mudie, top edge gilt, a fine copy. A wonderful note by Lady Stanley. The dedication leaf reads "To that man, of whatever nation, who, with equal means, shall do more towards the introduction of civilization, by cultivation and commerce, to the inhabitants of the western coast of Africa, than was effected by the enterprise of which the following sheets are descriptive; these memoranda are respectfully inscribed, by Philip Beaver." Lady Stanley has added, to the foot of the dedication, in pencil: "To Stanley. That Man! Dorothy Stanley 1910." Beaver made a considerable name for himself as a Captain in the Royal Navy, serving with distinction in the Mediterranean and the East Indies during the Napoleonic Wars. Prior to that, however, "he associated himself with a scheme for colonising the island of Bulama on the coast of Africa, near Sierra Leone. The whole affair seems to have been conducted without forethought or knowledge. The would-be settlers were, for the most part, idle and dissipated. Beaver found himself at sea in command of a vessel of 260 tons, with 65 men, 24 women, and 31 children, mostly sea-sick and all equally useless. When they landed, anything like discipline was unobtainable . Beaver endeavoured, by unceasing toil, to keep a little order and to promote a little industry; but the men were quite unfitted for the work and manner of life, and the greater number of them died. The miserable remnants of the party evacuated the island and went to Sierra Leone, whence Beaver obtained a passage to England." (DNB). Cox I, 398; Gay 3196; Brunet 28440.         PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY OR SOCIAL LIFE OR THE ART OF CONVERSING WITH MEN AFTER THE GERMAN OF BARON KNIGGE

Ansingburgh NY: Penniman & Bliss(1805.). 1st American Edition. Period Full Leather, 8vo, 368 pages. This is the stated First American Edition of Baron Knigge's sociological/philosophical work on human relations. Adolf Franz Friedrich Knigge (1752-1796) , was a German philosopher and writer, under the name "Philo, " was one of the most active members of the Illuminati, a mutual moral and intellectual improvement society founded by Adam Weishaupt, and which later became affiliated with the Freemasons. This work is an English language translation of Knigge's most poular work, Ueber den Umgang mit Menschen (1788) , in which he lays down rules to be observed for a peaceful, happy and useful life. (Shaw & Shoemaker, American Imprints: 8743) . Knigge's book was often viewed as a manual of etiquette so that the term "Knigge" in German came to mean something like "good manners. " The book , however, is more on the ways that humans should interact to live a morally good life. Interesting social guidelines such as: xiv "provoke not the resentment of an ill tempered woman; " xv "Is it possible to avoid falling in love? ; " xvi Seducing or deluding...; " xvii "On conversation with coquettes and seducing females. " This English translation may be more of a free interpretation by Peter Will since it says "after the German" rather than "translated from the German. " This volume was published in Lansingburgh New York which is now a part of Troy. Original morocco spine label and gilt embellishments. Period leather boards show wear. Especially at the foot and spine of the crown, but otherwise a very nice clean copy, with only occational foxing, the nicest we have ever seen. Very Good- Condition. (SPEC-35-6)

La Henriade, poeme, en dix chants, avec les notes et les variantes; suivie de l'essai sur la poésie épique

Paris: Stereotype d'Herhan, 1805. Very good antiquarian condition. 8vo. (205 x 120 mm). lv, [1], 404 pp. In a fine, contemporary French binding by Kallenbach (signed R[el] [P]ar Kallenbach at the foot of spine); blue-black diced russia calf, covers gilt with a wide arched trellis of leaves, smooth spine gilt, pastedowns of red glazed paper, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt (joints almost invisibly strengthened). Beautiful early 19th-century Parisian binding by Kallenbach, a little-known master whose work exhibits the severe Empire elegance and technical perfection of Bozerian le Jeune and Simier, while anticipating by many years the flowing sophistication of T.J. Cobden-Sanderson. Our binding is far superior than the routine and clearly derivative example formerly in the Jules Janin - Hans Furstenberg - Otto Schafer collections (Von Arnim, Europaische Einbandkunst no. 163, describing it as “von mittlerer Qualitat”). Concerning Kallenbach, Von Arnim cites various authorities on the history of French bookbinding, none of whom were able to provide any biographical details, save that he was active in the early 19th-century at 4, rue Chabanais. His first name is not known, and various spellings of his last name occur in the literature, including: Kalenbach / Kalenbach / Kalenback). We know of only two other bindings by Kallenbach, both in the British Library, and both bound in “gold tooled painted calf.” The first is on another edition of Voltaire's “La Henriade” (Kehl, 1789), the second Bernard's “Paul et Virginie” (Paris, 1806). Our copy of Voltaire's “Henriade” appears to be on large paper. The doublures are of red glazed paper and are decidedly appealing. Besides the inferior Janin-Fustenberg-Schafer example (sold at Sotheby's London, 7 December 1995, lot 288) this is the only Kallenbach binding we have ever seen offered for sale. Flety, Dictionnaire des relieurs francais, p. 98. Ramsden, French Bookbinders, p. 112. Beraldi, La Reliure au XIXe siecle, vol. I, p. 34. Kallenbach remained unknown to Schmidt-Kunsemuller.

        La Perruche Phigy Pl. 64

Paris 1805 - Paper Dimension: 14 x 21 Engraving with original hand color - Jacques Barraband’s engravings of birds are masterpieces of French ornithological illustration. These stunning portraits were done for the distinguished ornithologist Francois Levaillant, who commissioned the artist to illustrate his landmark works on exotic birds, including the lavish and striking Histoire Naturelle des Oiseauz des Paradis et des Rolliers. The collaboration of Levaillant and Barraband represented a departure from previous ornithological texts in its emphasis on beauty and luxury, with sumptuously colored and flawlessly rendered birds. Apart from their undoubted beauty, Barraband’s engravings display a scientific accuracy that few ornithological artists have matched since. The meticulous hand-colored engravings in Levaillants publications were unmatched for the delicate modulations of tone and color, fine lines and perfect draftsmanship, making them exceptional in their richness and tonal variation. Each feather is described by dozens of parallel lines, providing remarkable detail and naturalistically textured color. Some of the prints are embellished with touches of gold leaf on the feathers of the cheeks and shoulders of the birds, emphasizing the preciouness of the plates and reproducing the iridescence of the birds’ feathers. The present selection of images represents an opportunity to acquire spectacular engravings by a foremost 19th-century natural history artist.
