Insectes recueillis en Afrique et en Amerique, dans les Royaumes d'Oware et de Benin, a Saint-Domingue et dans les Etats-Unis, pendant les annees 1786-1797.

1805. Paris, Levrault, An XIII-1805 (-21). Large Folio (460 x 305mm). pp. (4), xvi, 276, with 90 fine colour-printed engraved plates with delicate hand finishing, the plates engraved by J.G. Pretre and printed by Langlois. In its original disbound leaves preserved in a modern cloth box. First edition of this rare and magnificent work. The first entomological iconography on African insects and a major contibution to early American entomology. Palisot de Beauvois (1752-1820) was a French naturalist and traveller. The present work was published in 15 parts over a period of 16 years, the last part being posthumously published by J.G. Audinet Serville. The superbly executed plates are by J.G. Pretre, one of the finest artists of the period, and colour printed by Langlois, the great master of colour printing who supervised most of Redoute's best works. Palisot de Beauvois suffered 3 great losses of collections made between the years 1786-1798: most of the Owara and Benin collections (in storage in Owara) were plundered by the British in 1792; his Haitian collections burned along with his house and other belonging in 1793; and most of his U.S. collections were lost at sea in 1798. "Palisot published a major entomological work entitled, 'Insectes Recueillis en Afrique et en Amerique'. Palisot's work is significant because, while some workers had described American beetles before him, he was one of the first to both actively collect and describe American insects along with his contemporary, Fredrick Melsheimer (the elder). In addition to the hundreds of common insects that he described, the work is also notable for his proposed ordinal classification of Insects. A large number of Scarabaeidae are included in this work, many described and/or illustrated for the first time. The total includes 39 species in the genus Scarabaeus, 17 species of Copris, seven species of Trox, four Cetonia and four Trichius. Among these were the first descriptions of such familiar beetles as Canthon viridis (P.B.), Macrodactylus angustatus (P.B.) and Osmoderma scabra (P.B.). A problem, ... is that many of the species that Palisot attributed to 'Amerique' were actually collected in 'Afrique', and vice versa. Moreover, he included species, such as Dynastes hercules (L.), which do not occur within the U.S. or Santo Domingo, creating type localities for species that in some cases are outside of their natural range... Because of the French revolution and his former status in the nobility as the Baron de Beauvois, Palisot was unable to return to France without risking the guillotine. Instead he boarded a ship bound for the United States but, en route, was relieved of his remaining belongings by pirates and thus he arrived in Philadelphia penniless and bereft. He was able to make a living by joining a circus as a musician, but he eventually returned to work as a botanist, hired to curate the private collection of C.W. Peale. In Philadelphia he became a member of the American Philosophical Society, published in its Transactions, and resumed his natural history collecting with the financial support of the French Attache, Paul Adet, a scientist in his own right. Palisot's collecting forays in the United States ranged as far west as the Ohio River and as far south as Savannah, Georgia. When finally notified by colleagues in Paris that his citizenship had been restored, Palisot began making plans for his return to Europe, including arrangements for the shipment of his specimens. Unfortunately, these collections were lost when the ship carrying them sank off the coast of Nova Scotia in 1798. He left the United States that same year and returned to his native France. Based on the material that had survived prior shipments, but mainly on his sketches, Palisot published works on plants and insects, the latter in a series of 15 booklets (livraisons) issued between 1805 and 1821, the last issued one year after his death. Griffin (1932, 1937) provides the dates of issue for each individual livraison. Each livraison included five to six plates, each with illustrations of six or nine of the insects described in the text, and it is on these sketches rather than actual specimens that Palisot's species are often recognized". (Biographical sketch contributed by Don Thomas, USDA, Weslaco, Texas). The copy is uncut and preserved in its original disbound leaves and was never bound. Some margins a bit dusty and a few plates slightly browned. 16 plates show butterflies. The first zoology volume of Humboldt's great survey of Central and South America, 'Voyage aux regions equinoxiales du Nouveau Continent fait en 1799-1804'. This massive work, published in 34 volumes over 25 years, covered natural history, economy, ethnography, and archaeology. 'The expedition to South America and Central America in the years 1799 to 1804 by Friedrich Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) and Aime Jacques Alexander von Bonpland (1773-1858) has long been accepted as the most important ever made to America, because its results, based upon study by many specialists of the immense quantity of specimens and observations relating to botany, zoology, geology, geography and history which they amassed with almost incredible industry and often under great difficulty, were... made available within a comparatively short time afterwards... Humboldt and Bonpland journeyed into regions then little known or never before scientifically investigated' (Stearn, Humboldt and Bonpland's 'Voyage aux Regions equinoxiales'). The outstanding plates were engraved and printed in colours by the firm of Langlois, who was responsible for Redoute's finest publications. The engraving was done by Bouquet and Coutant from drawings by Barraband and Huet, who in turn based their work on Humboldt's sketches. BM (NH) II pp. 890-1 (with a full list of contents); Nissen ZBI, 2048; Löwenberg, Alexander von Humboldt 111; Fiedler & Leitner, Alexander von Humboldt... 4.5.2..

Jaume Saint-Hilaire (1772-1845) was a French botanist and is best known for his famous 'Plantes de la France'. Only large paper copies have coloured plates. The fine plates are after drawings by the author. "Among those who worked under van Spaendonck or Redoute, or who based their style on pure water-colour technique which Redoute learned from his master, may be mentioned Turpin, Poiteau, Bessa, Mme. Vincent, Jaume-Saint-Hilaire, Chazal and Pretre. Most of these artists were the equals of Redoute in technical skill, and given his opportunities might have won the same renown... Jaume-Saint-Hilaire was no less distinguished as a botanist, and his introduction into France of 'Polygonum tinctorum', which yields a valuable blue dye, was of considerable importance" (Blunt & Stearn pp. 205 & 209). Small paper repair on both titles. A very fine and clean copy. Stafleu & Cowan 3305..

Reflections on the Causes of Unhappy Marriages, and on Various...

1805. George Cruikshank's Copy of aRare Treatise on Marriage and Divorce Lewis, Randle. [Cruikshank, George (1792-1878)]. Reflections on the Causes of Unhappy Marriages, and on Various Subjects Therewith Connected. An Epitome of the Law of Marriage and Divorce. With Judicial Decisions Touching Separation, Alimony, the Debts and Separate Property of the Wife. To Which is Added, a Brief Account of the Civil Law and Spiritual Courts, with a New Plan for Settling Separate Maintenance Without Ecclesiastical Process. London: W. Clarke. 1805. [ii], vi, 160 pp. Octavo (7-1/2" x 5"). Contemporary quarter morocco over marbled boards, gilt ornaments to spine, marbled endpapers, ribbon marker. Light rubbing to extremities, some fading to spine (that is not really obvious). Some toning to text, light foxing in a few places, some soiling to title page, which has Cruikshank's signature at its head, internally clean. A lovely copy of a rare title with an interesting association. * Only edition. Written by a conveyancer of the Middle Temple, this is a little-known but well-argued treatise on marriage from a legal and social perspective. "The following sheets", Lewis writes, "will doubtless present themselves to the reader as a novelty: the subjects are various, but they are mostly connected; part of them have not hitherto been treated on, and none in the same way. The author having designed this little book for the perusal and information of the middle class of society, he has endeavoured to compose it in a plain, familiar, and concise manner; and introduced some passages, for the use and assistance of such as may be uninformed what books to consult, or may not have leisure or means to read voluminous, or expensive works" (iii). The chapter headings give some idea of this book: "The Causes of Unhappy Marriages," "On Love and Marriage," "On Modesty- Chastity-Continence-And Adultery," "On Separations-The Usual Methods Adopted-Advertisements-The Wife's Debts-Credit by Tradesmen-With advice Thereon," and nine other chapters on the law of divorce, property, the wife's rights, the jurisdiction of the courts, legal alimony and maintenance and other matters, including, surprisingly, the position of paupers. This copy belonged to the great caricaturist and book illustrator Cruikshank. It reflects his large body of satirical work dealing with En.

A didactic poem in eight "chants" or songs, the second of which relates to the discovery of America by Columbus. Joseph-Alphonse Esmenard (1769-1811) who was well traveled, composed this work at sea on a trip to Haiti as secretary to Le Clerc. The work is accurate in its descriptions and covers the great explorers especially those of the 18th century such as Cook and Anson, and of course La Prouse, who by this time had already been missing for more than a decade and who is really the hero of this poem: the second frontispiece depicts the hypothetical "Naufrage des canots de la Prouse au Port des Franais" as described in Canto 8. A second edition, edited to six cantos, was published the following year. Both editions are rare. Provenance: ownership signature 'De Praz' with a flourish in an early 19th c. hand. Very good copies, some scuffing to spine and boards, owner's name on title pages, offsetting to corners of endpapers and a few last leaves.

Integral leaf is franked ìAlbert Gallatin,î reddish brown postmarked ìWASHN CITY FEB 12î and stamped ìFREE.î Clerically addressed from ìTreasury Departmentî to ìJeremiah Nicholls Esquire / Collector of Customs / Chester / Maryland.î Light toning at folds. Fine condition. In full, ìIt being found by experience that the rule which has heretofore governed the collectors in the issuing of sea-letters, in pursuance of the instructions from this department, of May 13th, 1793, has become liable to abuse; I am directed by the President of the United States, to request, that no sea-letters be granted in future, to any ships or vessels, which being owned in whole or in part by naturalized citizens residing abroad, are precluded from the benefit of registers, under the first section of an act of Congress to amend the ëAct concerning the registering and recording of ships and vessels,í passed on the 27th of March, 1804.î This printed, personally signed, circular letter was sent to all Collectors of Customs. On May 13, 1793, Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton, in a circular letter, told each Collector of Customs, in part, ìYou will be pleased particularly to observe, that these sea-letters are to be issued to all vessels, bound to foreign ports, which are, really and bona fide, wholly the property of one or more citizens of the United States Ã? No vessel in which any foreigner is interested wholly, or even in part, directly, or indirectly, either by holding the legal title to her, or by any trust, or other device, is entitled to the benefit of one of these documents; and you will take the most especial care to prevent deceptions and collusions in that respectÃ?î Evidently, these 1793 instructions had ìbecome liable to abuseî and resulted in a request by President Jefferson in the letter here offered. ìAn act giving effect to the laws of the United States within the territories ceded to the United States by the treaty of the 30th of April, 1803, between the United States and the French Republic, and for other purposesî signed by President Jefferson on March 27, 1804, stated, in part, that ìAn act concerning the registering and recording of ships and vessels Ã? shall extend to and have full force and effect in the above mentioned territories,î the land acquired by the Louisiana Purchase.

      - Discussing the candidacy of Parnell (Sir John Parnell, 1774-1801) for Queen's County, and declaring that as he had no time in which to obtain Ponsonby's opinion he had given his consent. '. Ld Temple informed me that he had received from Parnell the most unequivocal assurances that his Politicks would be with us, and asked me whether upon this declaration I should wish him to be supported. . I answered Ld Temple that I had no doubt about the propriety of supporting a Man of Parnell's family & character if he was decidedly with us. . Pray let me know that I have not been doing mischief. .'William Brabazon Ponsonby, first Baron Ponsonby (1744-1806) was an Irish politician and sportsman who aligned himself firmly with the Foxite Whigs. Henry Brooke Parnell, first Baron Congleton (1776-1842, politician) had succeeded to the family estates in Queen's county in 1801 on the death of his father, Sir John Parnell (1745-1801).       Albion Press Printed : Published by James Cundee, [London] 1805 - Quarto (7-3/4" x 10-1/4") bound in dark brown morocco leather with gilt-lettered morocco spine label; [ii] - xxiii, [i], 467, [blank], [7], [3] pages. Lacks the half-title page but otherwise complete with index, ads, and all plates listed. Illustrated with 2 maps, 9 full-page engraved plates, and a facsimile of a letter of Toussaint. From the World Digital Library website: "Marcus Rainsford was a soldier who served for many years with the British Army in the British West Indies. He visited Haiti in 1799, where he became an admirer of Toussaint L'Ouverture, the former slave who led Haiti?s revolution and struggle to end slavery. This book is Rainsford's account of the slave uprising that began in August 1791 and the subsequent fighting that, at different times, involved French, Spanish, and British troops and various factions in Haiti. The book includes the first known representations of Toussaint, which were engravings made from Rainsford's sketches and descriptions. Also included are extensive documentation of the revolution and Rainsford's disturbing accounts of the brutal treatment of the slave population by their French masters, as well as of the atrocities committed by all sides in the course of the struggle. Toussaint died in Paris in April 1803, after having been seized by French forces acting under orders from Napoleon Bonaparte, who in 1802 sent an army to Haiti in attempt to reassert French control. Rainsford's wholly admiring account of Toussaint appears in chapter 5 of the work." The plates and maps in this volume depict the following subjects: 1. The Author in Conversation. 2. Map of the Island. (folding) 3. Plan of Cape Francois. (folding) 4. View of the Temple erected by the Blacks. 5. Court-Martial of the Blacks. 6. Benevolence of a Female of Colour. 7. Toussaint L'Ouverture. 8. Mode of exterminating the Blacks by the French. 9. Revenge of the Blacks on the French. 10. Devastation of the Blood-Hounds (attacking a family in the Woods). 11. Fac-Simile of a Letter of Toussaint. 12. Mode of rearing Blood Hounds. "Marcus Rainsford's work printed a year after Saint-Domingue officially became Haiti, is a retrospective of the history of the island up until that time. The plates include some wonderful, dramatic, and sometimes incendiary engravings. The work also includes an almost regal portrait of Toussaint L'Ouverture. The engravings contained in this work are probably some of the most powerful among the illustrative history of the Haitian revolution." From the John Carter Brown Library Page "Remember Haiti." Some browning to the preliminaries and minor foxing on some leaves. There is a small ink library stamp to the title page. The map of the Island is somewhat browned. The plan of Cape Francois has suffered from indifferent folding and is missing a small piece on the bottom center of the plan, but otherwise the volume has ample margins, clear print, and generally clean pages throughout. All of the plates and maps are excellent impressions. The front joint is split, but the board is holding very firm by the cords. Very Good [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Works of Edmund Spenser

London - F. C. and J. Rivington, 1805 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A set of the poetical works of Edmund Spenser, widely regarded as one of the greatest English poets. Containing all his best-known poetry, including The Faerie Queen, April and Astrophel. Spenser's masterpiece is an extensive poem The Faerie Queene. The first three books of The Faerie Queene were published in 1590, and a second set of three books were published in 1596. This extended epic poem deals with the adventures of knights, dragons, ladies in distress, etc. yet it is also an extended allegory about the moral life and what makes for a life of virtue. With engraved frontispiece of Spenser to Volume I. Spenser was called a Poet's Poet and was admired by William Wordsworth, John Keats, Lord Byron and Alfred Lord Tennyson, among others. The language of his poetry is purposely archaic, reminiscent of earlier works such as The Canterbury Tales of Geoffrey Chaucer and Il Canzoniere of Francesco Petrarca, whom Spenser greatly admired. Spenser's Epithalamion is the most admired of its type in the English language. It was written for his wedding to his young bride, Elizabeth Boyle. The poem consists of 365 long lines, corresponding to the days of the year; 68 short lines, representing the sum of the 52 weeks, 12 months, and 4 seasons of the annual cycle; and 24 stanzas, corresponding to the diurnal and sidereal hours. Complete in eight volumes. Condition: Rebound in half-morocco bindings with marbled boards and original spine labels. Externally smart, with some minor wear to the spines and some sunfading to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Institutional stamps torecto of front free-endpaper. Pagesarespotted, with some foxingthroughout. Overall: VERY GOOD..

      - Letter Signed (?fouche?) to the Minister of War [Marshal Berthier] regarding the surveillance of former General Rigaud in Tours.1 page folio in French with an attractive vignette of the Ministry of Police, Paris, 2 frimaire an 14 [23 November 1805]. Trans: ?I have received, Sir, the letter which you sent me on 16 Brumaire last, regarding the former General Rigaud, coloured man, under surveillance at Tours. His Excellency the Minister of the Navy [Decrès] had already passed on to me the information contained in your letter, and the Councillor of State in charge of the first arrondissement for the Police was to have arranged for special surveillance on the part of the civil authorities on M. Rigaud.?General André Rigaud, son of a white father and black mother, had travelled to Santo Domingo with General Leclerc [husband of Napoleon's sister Pauline] on an expedition against Rigaud's old rival, Toussaint l'Ouverture. Always uneasy with his parentage and of a volatile temperament, Rigaud had earlier proved a brilliant soldier, but a poor politician. The expedition failed and upon his return to France, Rigaud was briefly held prisoner. As we can see here, even after his release, he was kept under close surveillance by the police. An attractive and interesting letter, in excellent condition.
