The Right Honourable Francis Rawdon Hastings, Earl of Moira, Commander of His Majesty's Forces in Scotland

      - London: 1 May 1805. Mezzotint portrait engraved by Clint after Shee. Engraved area (including lettering): 28 x 18 inches. Sheet size: 29 1/2 x 19 1/2 inches. (Minor foxing, light mat burn, minor repair in the upper margin along the platemark). Scarce portrait of a noted British officer who served with distinction in the American Revolution. Francis Edward Rawdon-Hastings, 1st Marquess of Hastings (1754-1826), Irish-British politician and military officer, served in the American Revolution, seeing action at Lexington and Concord and Bunker Hill. At the latter battle, he is said to have killed the American General Warren himself, and is depicted in John Trumbull's famous painting The Death of General Warren. His service continued in America throughout the war, as aide-de-camp to General Howe, and with significant command in the southern campaign. He would later serve as the Governor General of India from 1813-1823. In this scarce full-length portrait, Lord Rawdon is standing facing front but looking away to the left, with his right hand extended holding a scroll, his left hand holding a sheathed sword just below the hilt. Wearing a military uniform with two buttons fastened across the chest, the background is an interior with table littered in papers, scroll, books, and a plumed hat behind to right; a classical façade with columns and Greco-Roman military statues in niches in the background to left. First state, marked "first fifty" in the lower left. A second edition would be published with new lettering in 1813. Scarce. Not in Chaloner Smith.

Harvest-Home: Consisting of Supplementary Gleanings, Original Dramas and Poems, Contributions of Literary Friends, and Select Re-Publications

London - Richard Phillips, 1805. London - Richard Phillips, 1805 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The collected works of the prolific English poet, dramatist and novelist, Samuel Jackson Pratt, including the revised edition of his poem Sympathy. Prattauthored around 40 publications between 1770 and 1810, some of which are still published today, and is probably best remembered as the author of Emma Corbett: or the Miseries of Civil War, (1780) and the poem Sympathy (1788). Although his reputation was tainted by scandal during his lifetime, he is today recognised as an early campaigner for Animal Rights and the first English writer to treat the American Revolution as a legitimate subject for literature. Critical reception to Pratt's works was mixed during his lifetime. His scandalous sham marriage and the public furore over his unnatural and shocking novel The Pupil of Pleasure damaged his reputation, giving him a 'dubious moral character' which deterred respectable readers. His poem Sympathy, however, was noted for its 'feeling, energy and beauty. WIth a frontispiece portrait of the author to Volume I. Complete in three volumes. Condition: In half-calf bindings with marbled boards. Externally sound, with some wear to the spines and extremities. Front and rear joints of Volumes I and II starting, but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Armorial bookplate of 'William Edward Armstrong' to front pastedown of each. Neat ink signature to title pages. Pages are bright with just some scattered light spotting, particularly to the first and last few pages. Overall: VERY GOOD..

Maragaret's widowed mother Lady Janet hates the Ker clan as a result, and is adamant in refusing her consent to any suggestion of marriage between the lovers. Condition: In a vellum binding.         THE WORKS OF THE RIGHT HONOURABLE LADY MARY WORTLEY MONTAGU. INCLUDING HER CORRESPONDENCE, POEMS AND ESSAYS. PUBLISHED BY PERMISSION FROM HER GENUINE PAPERS.

Richard Phillips London: 1805 - 16mo. In five volumes, 1; 255 pp. 2; 256 pp. 3; 248 pp. 4; 280 pp. 5; 288 + 8 pp. Illustrated with two engraved portraits, nine facsimile letters, mostly folding. Bound in full blue straight grained crushed morocco, gilt, spine in 6 compartments with elaborate gilt and blind tooling. Boards panelled in gilt, and decorated with blind tooling. A very upmarket binding only very slightly rubbed. A fine example. Lady Mary Wortley Montagu distributed her writings privately and was content not to publish during her lifetime. With the exception of some anonymous articles and a pirated edition of her poetry, her letters, essays and poems were published posthumously. In her works, she advocated higher education for women and, in turn, more political interest and involvement. Fifth collected edition with an extensive selection of her letters from Constantinople, Venice and other foreign parts, a selection of poems, some of the essays, her translation of Epictetus, etc. Anonymously edited, with a memoir by James Dallaway (1763-1834), from materials supplied by her son-in-law, Lord Bute - apparently in exchange for the suppression of other manuscripts held by Richard Phillips, the publisher. With the contemporary ownership inscription of J. Eagle and another later owner G.M. Yaldmyer. LITERATURE 18th CENTURY LITERATURE

An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations

London: T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1805.. London: T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1805. Octavo, 3 volumes. Original three quarters leather over marbled boards, with raised bands, gilt titles to the spine, marbled endpapers. In very good condition. An excellent early set of this classic work. Adam Smith's masterpiece, first published in 1776, is the foundation of modern economic thought and remains the single most important account of the rise of, and the principles behind, modern capitalism. "Adam Smith's enormous authority resides, in the end, in the same property that we discover in Marx: not in any ideology, but in an effort to see to the bottom of things" (Robert L. Heilbroner).
