La Henriade, poeme, en dix chants, avec les notes et les variantes; suivie de l'essai sur la poésie épique

Paris: Stereotype d'Herhan, 1805. Very good antiquarian condition. 8vo. (205 x 120 mm). lv, [1], 404 pp. In a fine, contemporary French binding by Kallenbach (signed R[el] [P]ar Kallenbach at the foot of spine); blue-black diced russia calf, covers gilt with a wide arched trellis of leaves, smooth spine gilt, pastedowns of red glazed paper, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt (joints almost invisibly strengthened). Beautiful early 19th-century Parisian binding by Kallenbach, a little-known master whose work exhibits the severe Empire elegance and technical perfection of Bozerian le Jeune and Simier, while anticipating by many years the flowing sophistication of T.J. Cobden-Sanderson. Our binding is far superior than the routine and clearly derivative example formerly in the Jules Janin - Hans Furstenberg - Otto Schafer collections (Von Arnim, Europaische Einbandkunst no. 163, describing it as “von mittlerer Qualitat”). Concerning Kallenbach, Von Arnim cites various authorities on the history of French bookbinding, none of whom were able to provide any biographical details, save that he was active in the early 19th-century at 4, rue Chabanais. His first name is not known, and various spellings of his last name occur in the literature, including: Kalenbach / Kalenbach / Kalenback). We know of only two other bindings by Kallenbach, both in the British Library, and both bound in “gold tooled painted calf.” The first is on another edition of Voltaire's “La Henriade” (Kehl, 1789), the second Bernard's “Paul et Virginie” (Paris, 1806). Our copy of Voltaire's “Henriade” appears to be on large paper. The doublures are of red glazed paper and are decidedly appealing. Besides the inferior Janin-Fustenberg-Schafer example (sold at Sotheby's London, 7 December 1995, lot 288) this is the only Kallenbach binding we have ever seen offered for sale. Flety, Dictionnaire des relieurs francais, p. 98. Ramsden, French Bookbinders, p. 112. Beraldi, La Reliure au XIXe siecle, vol. I, p. 34. Kallenbach remained unknown to Schmidt-Kunsemuller.

        La Perruche Phigy Pl. 64

Paris 1805 - Paper Dimension: 14 x 21 Engraving with original hand color - Jacques Barraband’s engravings of birds are masterpieces of French ornithological illustration. These stunning portraits were done for the distinguished ornithologist Francois Levaillant, who commissioned the artist to illustrate his landmark works on exotic birds, including the lavish and striking Histoire Naturelle des Oiseauz des Paradis et des Rolliers. The collaboration of Levaillant and Barraband represented a departure from previous ornithological texts in its emphasis on beauty and luxury, with sumptuously colored and flawlessly rendered birds. Apart from their undoubted beauty, Barraband’s engravings display a scientific accuracy that few ornithological artists have matched since. The meticulous hand-colored engravings in Levaillants publications were unmatched for the delicate modulations of tone and color, fine lines and perfect draftsmanship, making them exceptional in their richness and tonal variation. Each feather is described by dozens of parallel lines, providing remarkable detail and naturalistically textured color. Some of the prints are embellished with touches of gold leaf on the feathers of the cheeks and shoulders of the birds, emphasizing the preciouness of the plates and reproducing the iridescence of the birds’ feathers. The present selection of images represents an opportunity to acquire spectacular engravings by a foremost 19th-century natural history artist.

Plate 82.

Paris 1805 - Original stipple engraving, printed in colours and finished by hand, with strong colour, trimmed to just outside plate-mark, small tear to left side, otherwise a fine copy with clean, strong colours. Dimensions: 347 by 260mm (13.5 by 10 inches). From Levaillant's "Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets", which is considered the most comprehensive and complete catalogue on the subject. This magnificent work includes some of the most lively and colorful bird illustrations ever created. They capture not only the defining characteristics of the species, but also the charming personality of the individual bird. This exquisite monograph was written by Francois Levaillant, an adventurer and natural historian, who was one of the first to record sightings of Australian parrots. Barrband's skill was greatly esteemed and his name lent cachet to the sumptious work authored by Levaillant. Barraband's brilliantly colored engravings of exotic birds coupled with Levaillant's precise descriptions represent the height of realistic bird art. Jacques Barraband achieved great artistic notoriety for his work at the Gobelin tapestry works, the Sevres porcelain factory, and the palace of St. Cloud before coming to work for the French naturalist Francois Levaillant in the early years of the nineteenth century. Barraband collaborated with Louis Bouquet and Langlois to create the engravings for this work. The plates were carefully inked "a la poupee" with brilliant colors and pulled from the press. Nuances were then added by hand. In his work, Barraband often shows his subject in profile perched on a short tree branch. No other artist equalled his mastery in the rendering of feathers, in evoking their fragility, stiffness or incredible lightness. He displays a preference for harmonies of blues and greens, and reds and yellows. The evocative power of these realistic and precise bird renderings, that feature all the colors of the rainbow, is striking.

Fabelen van J. De la Fontaine in Nederduitsche vaerzen. (set of 4), Amsterdam, Johannes Allart, 1805.

      - Set of four hardcovers with leather spines and paper covered boards. The spines are divided in six shields of which the second shield shows the gilded title on a red background and the fourth the volume. The mock ribs are decorated with a gilded pattern. Each volume contains an ex libris (Dr. O.H. Dijkstra). The spines of volume two and four are slightly loose at the top. The corners of all the books are a bit worn. Overall the books are in good condition (no foxing). Rare edition. 13 x 21 cm, vol. 1. [4] 1-208 pp., vol. 2. [4] 209-450 pp., vol. 3. [4] 451-676 pp., vol. 4. [4] 677-916 pp. The books are illustrated and engraved by J. Punt and Vinkeles (each story is accompanied by an engraving). The French author Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695) was one of the most influential fable writers of all time. Although his stories are loosely based on the work of old masters like Aesopus and Phaedrus, they were of such quality that they became immensely popular. De la Fontaine belonged to the so called Classicists, which meant that he took his inspiration from Greek and Roman antiquity. These views made him an opponent of Charles Perrault (1628-1703), the other famous story writer of the time, who thought that modern literature was superior to that of the olden days. The illustrations of Jan Punt (1711-1779) and Reinier Vinkeles (1741-1816) are a beautiful replenishment to the text of La Fontaine. Vinkeles, who was the student of Punt, outshined his master later in life with his close to nature engravings.

        Carta dell'Istria ristampata nel 1805

Incisione in rame, colore d'epoca, mm 650x460. Plate 72. T.2.

Collection des Fleurs et des Fruits: a Set of Floral Designs.

Paris 1805 - Original stipple engravings by Charles-Louis Ruotte, Charles Louis) printed in colour and finished by hand. Framed and glazed, overall size: 63.3 by 47.2cm. Prevost came from a long line of French artists spanning 400 years. Jean-Louis himself first exhibited at the Salon when only fourteen years of age, showing paintings of bouquets, a vase of flowers and other small botanical studies. Immediately he was commissioned by Monsieur Roussel to paint the flowers in the wealthy landowner's garden. The result was a 12-volume work of gouache studies, entitled "Hortus Cellensis", and was at once acquired by the Paris Natural History Library. Soon after he began work on his great printed work, the "Collection des Fleurs et Fruits", a series of 48 stipple engraved plates depicting bouquets and baskets of fruit. The work was engraved by the brilliant and versatile artist Charles Louis Ruotte, who had learned the new practice of coloured engraving under Bartolozzi in London. The work is known as one of the most magnificent and beautiful publications in the world of botanical art, and was used as a manual for designers of chintzes and toiles. Above all, he was a master of composition who could unerringly blend the finest hot-house specimen with the simplest bloom of field or hedgerow to produce beautiful images.

        Suvorov's March across the Alps.

John Vendramini London Jan 1 1805 - Aquatint (59.5 x 79 cm) by John Vendramini after a painting by Robert Kerr Porter, with contemporary hand colouring; some marginal restoration, browning. In lower margin captioned in English & French: "To His Most Excellent Majesty the Emperor of all the Russians / These plates representing the passage of the Alps by Russian troops led / by General Suwarrow on the 28 of Oct. 1799, are most humbly dedicated by his / Imperial Majesty's most dutiful Servant John Vendramini". Fine large aquatint depicting heroic crossing of the Alps by the Russian troops in the War of the Second Coalition. This is the first in a pair of coloured aquatints by Giovanni Vendramini (1769-1839) after Robert Porter (1777-1842), and depicts the standing figure of Suvorov, sword aloft, in the foreground attended by a kneeling priest and group of officers, with the Russian infantry engaging French soldiers on a bridge and mountain pass in the background; the engraved dedication & description below the image contains a vignette head & shoulders portrait of Alexander I in uniform. In 1799 Paul I granted Suvorov command of the Austro-Russian army and sent him to drive Napoleon's forces out of Italy. Suvorov erased practically all of Bonaparte's gains of 1796 and 1797, defeating his top generals Moreau (at Cassano d'Adda), MacDonald (at Trebbia) and Joubert (at Novi). After the victorious Italian theatre Suvorov planned to march on Paris, but instead was ordered to Switzerland to join up with the Russian forces already there and drive the French out. The Russian army under General Korsakov was defeated by Masséna at Zürich before Suvorov could reach and unite with them. Surrounded by Masséna's 80,000 French troops, Suvorov with a force of 18,000 Russian regulars and 5,000 Cossacks, exhausted and short of provisions, decided that to evade the French forces awaiting him he would march into the 9,000 foot high mountains of the Panikh range towards Ilants. After a difficult march, the Russian army reached Ilants on October 8, finally beyond the reach of the French. Suvorov's successful escape still cost him as much as one third of his army and all of his guns, but gained him the grudging admiration of Europe, the nickname "the Russian Hannibal" and the title of the fourth Generalissimo of Russia.
