La Henriade, poeme, en dix chants, avec les notes et les variantes; suivie de l'essai sur la poésie épique

Paris: Stereotype d'Herhan, 1805. Very good antiquarian condition. 8vo. (205 x 120 mm). lv, [1], 404 pp. In a fine, contemporary French binding by Kallenbach (signed R[el] [P]ar Kallenbach at the foot of spine); blue-black diced russia calf, covers gilt with a wide arched trellis of leaves, smooth spine gilt, pastedowns of red glazed paper, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt (joints almost invisibly strengthened). Beautiful early 19th-century Parisian binding by Kallenbach, a little-known master whose work exhibits the severe Empire elegance and technical perfection of Bozerian le Jeune and Simier, while anticipating by many years the flowing sophistication of T.J. Cobden-Sanderson. Our binding is far superior than the routine and clearly derivative example formerly in the Jules Janin - Hans Furstenberg - Otto Schafer collections (Von Arnim, Europaische Einbandkunst no. 163, describing it as “von mittlerer Qualitat”). Concerning Kallenbach, Von Arnim cites various authorities on the history of French bookbinding, none of whom were able to provide any biographical details, save that he was active in the early 19th-century at 4, rue Chabanais. His first name is not known, and various spellings of his last name occur in the literature, including: Kalenbach / Kalenbach / Kalenback). We know of only two other bindings by Kallenbach, both in the British Library, and both bound in “gold tooled painted calf.” The first is on another edition of Voltaire's “La Henriade” (Kehl, 1789), the second Bernard's “Paul et Virginie” (Paris, 1806). Our copy of Voltaire's “Henriade” appears to be on large paper. The doublures are of red glazed paper and are decidedly appealing. Besides the inferior Janin-Fustenberg-Schafer example (sold at Sotheby's London, 7 December 1995, lot 288) this is the only Kallenbach binding we have ever seen offered for sale. Flety, Dictionnaire des relieurs francais, p. 98. Ramsden, French Bookbinders, p. 112. Beraldi, La Reliure au XIXe siecle, vol. I, p. 34. Kallenbach remained unknown to Schmidt-Kunsemuller.

        La Perruche Phigy Pl. 64

Paris 1805 - Paper Dimension: 14 x 21 Engraving with original hand color - Jacques Barraband’s engravings of birds are masterpieces of French ornithological illustration. These stunning portraits were done for the distinguished ornithologist Francois Levaillant, who commissioned the artist to illustrate his landmark works on exotic birds, including the lavish and striking Histoire Naturelle des Oiseauz des Paradis et des Rolliers. The collaboration of Levaillant and Barraband represented a departure from previous ornithological texts in its emphasis on beauty and luxury, with sumptuously colored and flawlessly rendered birds. Apart from their undoubted beauty, Barraband’s engravings display a scientific accuracy that few ornithological artists have matched since. The meticulous hand-colored engravings in Levaillants publications were unmatched for the delicate modulations of tone and color, fine lines and perfect draftsmanship, making them exceptional in their richness and tonal variation. Each feather is described by dozens of parallel lines, providing remarkable detail and naturalistically textured color. Some of the prints are embellished with touches of gold leaf on the feathers of the cheeks and shoulders of the birds, emphasizing the preciouness of the plates and reproducing the iridescence of the birds’ feathers. The present selection of images represents an opportunity to acquire spectacular engravings by a foremost 19th-century natural history artist.

FIRST EDITION OF POUQUEVILLE'S TRAVEL'S TO MOREA, GREECE, ALBANIA AND TURKEY, COMPLETE WITH ALL MAPS AND PLATES, IN AN ATTRACTIVE, UNSOPHISTICATED BINDING. François Pouqueville (1770-1838) was a French diplomat, explorer, physician and historian, and member of the Institut de France. As the Turkish sultan's hostage and then as Napoleon Bonaparte's general consul at the court of Ali Pasha of Ioannina, Pouqueville travelled extensively throughout Ottoman occupied Greece from 1798 to 1820. Through his diplomacy and writings, Pouqueville became a prominent spokesman for the Philhellenism movement throughout Europe and contributed to the liberation of the Greeks and the rebirth of the Greek nation. The present work, dedicated Emperor Napoleon I, was Pouqueville's first major publication and was a huge literary success. It established Pouqueville as an expert in Ottoman affairs and contributed to his nomination as Napoleon's consul general to the court of Ali Pasha of Ioannina. Voyage en Morée was republished in various forms over the next few years; an English translation and abridgement appeared in 1806, and a full translation by Anne Plumptre was published in 1813. Pouqueville went on to published a still more influential travel book, Voyage dans la Grece, which appeared in five volumes in 1820-22. REFERENCES: Atabey 963; Blackmer 1344; Weber 1:5.         Le Petit Vaza. Plate 82.

Paris 1805 - Original stipple engraving, printed in colours and finished by hand, with strong colour, trimmed to just outside plate-mark, small tear to left side, otherwise a fine copy with clean, strong colours. Dimensions: 347 by 260mm (13.5 by 10 inches). From Levaillant's "Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets", which is considered the most comprehensive and complete catalogue on the subject. This magnificent work includes some of the most lively and colorful bird illustrations ever created. They capture not only the defining characteristics of the species, but also the charming personality of the individual bird. This exquisite monograph was written by Francois Levaillant, an adventurer and natural historian, who was one of the first to record sightings of Australian parrots. Barrband's skill was greatly esteemed and his name lent cachet to the sumptious work authored by Levaillant. Barraband's brilliantly colored engravings of exotic birds coupled with Levaillant's precise descriptions represent the height of realistic bird art. Jacques Barraband achieved great artistic notoriety for his work at the Gobelin tapestry works, the Sevres porcelain factory, and the palace of St. Cloud before coming to work for the French naturalist Francois Levaillant in the early years of the nineteenth century. Barraband collaborated with Louis Bouquet and Langlois to create the engravings for this work. The plates were carefully inked "a la poupee" with brilliant colors and pulled from the press. Nuances were then added by hand. In his work, Barraband often shows his subject in profile perched on a short tree branch. No other artist equalled his mastery in the rendering of feathers, in evoking their fragility, stiffness or incredible lightness. He displays a preference for harmonies of blues and greens, and reds and yellows. The evocative power of these realistic and precise bird renderings, that feature all the colors of the rainbow, is striking.

Some scattered foxing, especially to prelims, previous owner's ink stamp on each new endpaper [not original], else a very good clean set.

Fabelen van J. De la Fontaine in Nederduitsche vaerzen. (set of 4), Amsterdam, Johannes Allart, 1805.

      - Set of four hardcovers with leather spines and paper covered boards. The spines are divided in six shields of which the second shield shows the gilded title on a red background and the fourth the volume. The mock ribs are decorated with a gilded pattern. Each volume contains an ex libris (Dr. O.H. Dijkstra). The spines of volume two and four are slightly loose at the top. The corners of all the books are a bit worn. Overall the books are in good condition (no foxing). Rare edition. 13 x 21 cm, vol. 1. [4] 1-208 pp., vol. 2. [4] 209-450 pp., vol. 3. [4] 451-676 pp., vol. 4. [4] 677-916 pp. The books are illustrated and engraved by J. Punt and Vinkeles (each story is accompanied by an engraving). The French author Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695) was one of the most influential fable writers of all time. Although his stories are loosely based on the work of old masters like Aesopus and Phaedrus, they were of such quality that they became immensely popular. De la Fontaine belonged to the so called Classicists, which meant that he took his inspiration from Greek and Roman antiquity. These views made him an opponent of Charles Perrault (1628-1703), the other famous story writer of the time, who thought that modern literature was superior to that of the olden days. The illustrations of Jan Punt (1711-1779) and Reinier Vinkeles (1741-1816) are a beautiful replenishment to the text of La Fontaine. Vinkeles, who was the student of Punt, outshined his master later in life with his close to nature engravings.
