On the supposed Chemical Affinity of the Elements of Atmospheric Air: with Remarks upon Dr. Thomson's Observations on the Subject," (Dalton) with "Osteological Description of the one-horned Rhinoceros" (Cuvier) with "Account of an Aerostatic Voyage performed by Messrs. Guy-Lussac and Biot" (Guy-Lussac and Biot) in The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, Volume XIX, 1804, pp. 79-83; pp. 350-354; pp. 371-379

BOUND FIRST EDITION OF A LETTER ON THE ATOMIC THEORY IN CHEMISTRY FROM JOHN DALTON to Alexander Tilloch, founder of the journal in which this paper is published. Also included are papers of import by Gay-Lussac, Biot, and Cuvier. John Dalton (1766-1844) was an English chemist, meteorologist, and physicist best known for his pioneering work in the development of modern atomic theory, the atomic theory in chemistry. "Dalton applied the Laws of Conservation of Mass and Definite Composition to explain his Atomic Theory. He developed the chemical theory in 1803 and told Thomas Thomson, University of Edinburgh, about it in 1804" (Greenberg, A Chemical History, 172). This paper is Dalton's response to a conclusion the chemist and professor Thomas Thomson leveled regarding Dalton's Atomic Theory; specifically: in the 2nd edition of his influential A System of Chemistry, Thomson wrote "that air is a chemical compound"; he then offered four reasons for his conclusion. Dalton believed that he had already well-proven "the absurdity of the notion of atmospherical air being a chemical compound of azotic and oxygens gases" (Dalton, On the Supposed, 19, 1804, p. 79). The object of the Dalton paper offered here, then, is to show the "insufficiency" of Thomson's four reasons; to do so, Dalton debunks each of Thomson's four 'reasons' one by one. ALSO INCLUDED: An exceedingly rare first edition in English of Jean-Baptiste Biot's paper, "Account of an Aerostatic Voyage", describing his landmark balloon ascent with Louis-Joseph Gay-Lussac. The scientific readings that Biot and Gay-Lussac took during their ascent established that the Earth's magnetic field extends into the atmosphere. "The ascent was notable in that it was undertaken entirely for scientific purposes. The primary purpose was to find whether the magnetic intensity of the earth decreased at great altitudes, as had been suggested by Horace de Saussure's experiments in the Alps. From their experiments, in which they timed the oscillations of a magnetized needle at various altitudes, Biot and Gay-Lussac concluded that up to 4000 meters there was not change" (DSB, II, p. 134-135). ALSO INCLUDED: "Osteological Description of the one-horned Rhinoceros" is the first English edition of the first part of an important paper by the celebrated zoologist and naturalist Georges Cuvier on the one-horned rhinoceros (one-horned Indian rhinoceros; Rhinoceros unicornis). It has been said that Georges Cuvier possessed one of the finest minds in history. Almost single-handedly, he founded vertebrate paleontology as a scientific discipline and created the comparative method of organismal biology, an incredibly powerful tool. It was Cuvier who firmly established the fact of the extinction of past life forms. CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Alexander Tilloch. Complete volume. 8vo. (8.25 x 5.25 inches). [4], 400 pages. Illustration: Nine copper-engraved plates with light to moderate age toning and foxing. Tightly and very solidly bound in contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards. He has provided a complete account of the natural resources of the country (much on mining and minerals including diamond mines), agriculture, the cultivation of the mulberry for silk, the indigo plant Indigosera tinctoria, the manufacture of opium and tobacco, economic activity, the transportation system, social classes, education, religion, Indian medical arts, native sports, etc., etc., etc. Fine set from the library of Jean Viardot (who had a real "eye" for the unusual). A supplementary volume was published four years later (it is rarely present).

Buddell, Opposite Bilkate in the Mountains of Sirinagur

1804 - DANIELL, Thomas and William. Buddell, Opposite Bilkate in the Mountains of Sirinagur. London: Published as the Act directs by Thos. Daniell, September 1, 1804. Color-printed aquatint with hand-finishing on wove paper; plate size 25-1/2 by 19 inches. Matted and framed, entire item measures 34 by 28 inches. $4200.A lovely view of the town of Badel ("Buddell"), from Thomas and William Daniell's celebrated book Oriental Scenery, a color-printed aquatint finished by hand. The Daniells' Oriental Scenery is considered one of the finest illustrated works on India. Thomas Daniell and his nephew William spent nine years in India making studies, sketches and drawings of the scenery, architecture, and antiquities that graced the countryside. They then devoted a further 13 years to publishing their remarkably accurate aquatints. In Britain, the impact was explosive. A cult of Indian architecture, landscaping and interior decoration arose, with the Royal Pavilion at Brighton as its centerpiece. The Daniells gave the English public their first accurate look at the exotic sub-continent. Their great achievement still lies in their ability to blend the picturesque with the real, resulting in images that capture the European taste for the sublime landscape, while still remaining faithful to their subjects. The Daniells brought the romance of the English landscape to the antiquities of India and provided England with an accurate vision of this wondrous country.Of this plate, Thomas Daniell wrote, "Our tent was pitched between two small rills on a beautiful knoll. It being the time of harvest when this view was taken, and the corn gathered in, the mode of treading out the grain by the feet of cattle, is represented in the foreground, and also the collecting and winnowing it; all which operations are performed in the open air" (Archer, Early Views of India, plate 50). Consisting of 144 views, published in six parts, the work was issued in seven stages: three sets of 24 plates titled Oriental Scenery with title dates of 1795, 1797, and 1801; 12 plates titled Antiquities of India dated 1799; 24 plates titled Hindoo Excavations dated 1803; 24 plates titled Views in Hindoostan dated 1807 (this plate was published in this part); and 12 further plates of Antiquities of India published without a title page in 1808. All plates were engraved by the Daniells and all are taken from their drawings save the 24 plates of Hindoo Excavations, which are after drawings by James Wales. See Abbey, Travel 420 (plate no. 145). Near-fine condition, a lovely hand-colored Daniell plate beautifully framed.

Memorial of the Agents of the New England Mississippi Land Company to Congress : With a Vindication of Their Title At Law Annexed.

City of Washington : A. & G. Way 1804 - Ocatvo. 7, 109 p. ; 22 cm. Bound in publisher's paper wraps. In custom made box. Small stain to front wrap. Wear to extremities. Library stamp to second page from NYPL dated 1902. Contemporary owners name to head of title page of Thomas Dwight, Massachusetts representative during the 8th Congress. Dwight's notations to some pages. Shaw & Shoemaker 7540. Sabin 52708 OCLC 1484388 An extremely important Yazoo document. The Yazoo land scandal was a massive fraud perpetrated from in the mid-1790s by Georgia governor George Mathews and the state legislature. They sold large tracts of land in the Yazoo lands, in what are now portions of Alabama and Mississippi, to political insiders at very low prices in 1794. With the end of the American Revolutionary War, most of the states of the new Union attempted to extend their territorial claims from the Proclamation line of 1763 to the lands towards the Mississippi River. The Yazoo scandal began after the Bourbon County Act was dissolved in 1788 under pressure by the federal government, a secret society was formed called the Combined Society, formed with purpose money by land speculation. The group gained power in the state legislature and in the following year, three companies, The South Carolina Yazoo Company, The Virginia Yazoo Company (which was headed by Patrick Henry), and the Tennessee Company built by the society?s interests, formed to buy land from Georgia. These venture were exposed and the deal for the land fell through in 1792, though the members of the Society still wished to develop Georgia lands. In 1794, four companies were formed, with several principal being from the original members of 1789 purchases and high ranking Georgian politicians to purchase 40 million acres of land for $500,000. On January 7, 1795, Governor Mathews signed into law a bill authorizing the sale of the 40,000,000 acres known as the Yazoo Act. When the details of the sale were revealed, public outrage was widespread, and people protested to federal officials and Congressmen. Jared Irwin and U.S. Senator James Jackson led the reform efforts: Irwin was elected Governor of Georgia and, less than two months after taking office, signed The Rescinding Act on February 13, 1796 nullifying the Yazoo Act. On the same day of The Rescinding Act, 11 million acres of the Yazoo land was sold to the New England Mississippi Land Company, who felt the repel was illegal, for $1,138,000, a 650% profit in 13 months' time. The lands west of Georgia would be ceded to the United States government in the Compact of 1802 for 1.25 million. This last act threw land holders into a limbo, and claims by third-party owners who had innocently purchased land from the original companies would not be resolved till 1816. With the last private sale prior to the Compact of 1802, coupled with the 11th amendment, the landmark case of Fletcher v. Peck would occur. John Peck of Massachusetts bought land from someone who could trace his title to the state of Georgia from 1795, when the Act was legal. He then sold 15,000 acres to Robert Fletcher of New Hampshire, based on a warranty deed, warranting good title. The two were obviously citizens of different New England states, and in June 1803 Fletcher sued Peck in federal circuit court in Massachusetts on diversity grounds, alleging that the title was bad, and requesting the return of his money. This landmark Yazoo document attempts to serve the land holders affected by the 1802 Compact, the fledgling court case, as well as an attempt to repel the sale by the State of Georgia. Two volumes folio (35.3 x 25.4 cm). title-page in English and French, 60 fine hand-coloured plates; 22 hand-coloured aquatint plates; slight occasional offset of plates onto text leaves. The plates were engraved by Dadley after designs by Pu-Qua of Canton. William Miller, the publisher, wrote: "By presenting to the eye a series of judiciously selected and well executed pictorial representations, forming striking portraits of single subjects, accurately finished in the colours of the original, and aided by short descriptive essays, they give more pleasing and definite ideas of the external character, style of dress, and peculiarity of occupation, than can be acquired by any other method, except personal observation." Miller goes on to say that the subjects depicted include members of all classes of society, from public dignitaries to common labourers. Overall these volumes offer not only a superb collection of finely executed aquatints but also an insight into the nations represented for the armchair traveller.         CELTIC RESEARCHES On the Origin, Traditions and Language of the Ancient Britons; With Some Introductory Sketches on Primitive Society

London: Printed for the author & sold by J. Booth, Duke-Street, Portland-Place. , 1804.. First Edition, First Printing. Half-Leather. Fine. First edition. Large octavo. In a fine modern binding of half calf over marbled boards, the spine with raised bands decorated in gilt within compartments, red leather label tooled in gilt, handsewn headbands, top edges gilt. lxxiii + 561 pp., two engraved full-page plates (of Runes) and a chart of 'primitive articulations' within the text. Some minor scattered foxing to preliminary leaves, a near fine copy, the paper supple and pleasant, the binding in fine condition. A lovely copy. Edward "Celtic" Davies (1756-1831) was a Welsh writer and Anglican clergyman whose writings examined the origins of Celtic languages and the meaning of Celtic mythology. His work became part of the 19th-century recovery and reinvention of druidic tradition. One keen reader of Davies' books who was interested in his theories was William Blake, who used Davies 'Celtic Researches' as the basis for his painting 'The Ancient Britons', the most sensational of the works displayed at his 1809 exhibition and at 10 x 14 feet the largest work ever executed by Blake - and now lost. Davies? status in his day is demonstrated by the fact that he was one the first ten writers selected by the newly established Royal Society of Literature to be awarded the honour of "Companion of Literature" in 1823 .'Celtic Researches' contains a long section on the Celtic Language, and a substantial section on Runes or "Bardic Letters"; and the two engraved plates in this book are both of Runes.

Rules and Regulations for the Formations, Field-Exercise, and Movements, of His Majesty's Forces.

London: War Office, printed; and sold by T. Egerton, 1804 - Octavo (179 x 112 mm). Contemporary red half skiver, gilt lettered and banded flat spine, marbled sides, yellow edges. 20th-century bookplate of Brian Edwards. Spine lightly sunned, front joint partially split but sound, binding rubbed, one gathering a little foxed. A very good copy. 16 engraved folding plates of formations and drills. First published in 1792 and reissued many times in the following two decades, Fawcett's handbook for infantry officers was one of his many "outstanding works [which] were crucial in preparing the army for the great struggle against revolutionary and Napoleonic France" (ODNB). This is a point stressed by J. A. Houlding: "It was essentially the 1792 Regulations that saw the British infantry through the later part of the great war against Revolutionary France, and through the whole of the Napoleonic Wars" (Fit for Service: The Training of the British Army, 1715-1795, 1981, p. 247). Fawcett (1727-1804) drew heavily on continental, and especially Prussian, training and drill practice: his first published work was a translation of the current Regulations for the Prussian Infantry (1754), followed by the first English edition of Maurice de Saxe's Reveries on the Art of War in 1757. "In 1781, already one of the most knowledgeable and professional soldiers and tacticians of the age, Fawcett was appointed adjutant-general on the British establishment, and, on being promoted lieutenant-general on 20 November 1782, entered upon the most important phase of his career He was responsible for stabilizing in 1786–7 the army's badly disrupted (by the late war) system of training and drill, then, during the years 1788–92 and beyond, acted as one of the principal figures (in conjunction with the duke of York, generals David Dundas, Sir William Pitt, and the earl of Pembroke, Major Le Marchant, and several other leading officers) in the preparation, testing, and issue of the regulations laid down for the heavy infantry. He achieved the same for the cavalry during 1787 and between 1794 and 1796. His last translation, of Francis de Rottenburg's German drillbook, as Regulations for the Exercise of Riflemen and Light Infantry, was issued in 1798 as the official drill for the new light infantry" (idem). These light infantry drills are included in this edition. With a superb provenance: containing the wonderfully martial bookplate of Richard Hussey Vivian, first Baron Vivian (1775-1842), who, with the 7th Light Dragoons, served with distinction on the retreat to Corunna; he then led a brigade at Waterloo, making a vital contribution as evening drew on, bolstering the Allied centre against the attack of the Old Guard and making the final cavalry charges of the day. For this he was mentioned in despatches and received the thanks of Parliament. Intended as they were for practical use, all editions of this important work tend to be uncommon, this one particularly so: Copac locates just one copy (National Library of Wales) in British and Irish institutional libraries; OCLC adds only two complete copies (Massachusetts Historical Society, Westpoint) and what appears to be an incomplete copy at UC Davis. Sandler 1228 (citing the edition of 1806).
