"In these experiments, the body became violently agitated and even raised itself as if about to walk, the arms alternately rose and fell and the forearm was made to hold a weight of several pounds (...), natural respiration was also artificially restablished" (Mottelay). DSB I-107 ; Mottelay p. 304 ; Poggendorff I-27 ; Wheeler Gift n° 660.

(No pl.), A. Suntach, 1804.Engraving depicting the capture of the two sons of Tipoo Sultan after Henry Singleton by F. dal Pedro. Ca. 29,5 x 41 cm.Following his defeat in the Third Mysore War (1790-1792) the British made Tipu Sultan cede part of his dominions, pay a substantial financial settlement and surrender two of his 16 sons as hostages. Princes Mohin-ud-din (or Moiz-ud-din) (aged eight) and Abdul Khalik (aged ten) were accordingly delivered to Lord Cornwallis, the Governor-General of India, at Seringapatam on 26 February 1792. In February 1794, after the fulfilment of the treaty, the princes returned to Seringapatam. They enjoyed a few years of peace but the conflict between Mysore and the British resumed in 1799. On 4 May that year Mysore's capital was captured and Tipu Sultan was killed alongside 10,000 of his subjects. The princes were captured by Major-General David Baird, who treated them with great respect and arranged for their safe passage out of the devastated city. After laying their dead father to rest they were then sent to Vellore. In 1806, following a mutiny at Vellore among the soldiers of the Madras Army, the princes were exiled to Calcutta along with the rest of Tipu's family, lest they become a figurehead for opposition to British rule in southern India. - Fine.

Inquiry into the Nature and Origin of Public Wealth

1804 - MAITLAND, James. An Inquiry into the Nature and Origin of Public Wealth, and into the Means and Causes of Its Increase. Edinburgh and London: Arch. Constable and T.N. Longman & O. Rees, 1804. Octavo, contemporary full brown tree calf rebacked, red morocco spine label. $1800.First edition of James Maitland, Earl of Lauderdale’s discourse on public wealth, in which he argues against Adam Smith’s concept of "value."In 1796 James Maitland, Earl of Lauderdale, called the attention of the House of Lords to the state of the public finances, but at the time did not offer a formal resolution. Instead he embarked upon a series of writings on the subject. In 1804 he published his Inquiry, which attracted considerable attention, partly because in it Maitland chose to criticize Adam Smith as "the person who has struggled most to establish the opinion, that labor may be considered as an accurate measure of value." For Maitland, "wealth is everything that possesses utility; but individual riches possess utility and scarcity. These two elements determine value" (Roll, 307). Maitland also disagreed with Smith’s contention that there is never "too much" capital and that every saver is a public benefactor (Niehans, 80, 86). Large folding table at rear. Kress 4816. Goldsmiths 18801. Contemporary armorial bookplate of Henry Dundas, First Viscount Melville, "the most powerful man in Scotland for nearly 30 years" (DNB). Dundas began his career in law as Solicitor General for Scotland; throughout his later career, he was committed to increasing the economic strength of his country and managing the public wealth. Small ink shelf number on title page.A fine copy with distinguished provenance. [Attributes: First Edition]

689-700 do referido catálogo. Series of four Peaches], From 'Pomona Britannica; or, A Collection of the Most Esteemed Fruits'.

London: G. Brookshaw -1812 1804 - Set of four aquatint engravings, with some stipple, printed in colours and finished by hand. [Nectarine] Vermash Nectarine; Violet Hative Nectarine; Roman Nectarine; North's Scarlet Nectarine; Elrouge Nectarine; Peterborough Nectarine, . [Nectarine] Dutillees Nectarine; Burgnon's Old Nectarine; Brugnon's Round Nectarine; Murray Nectarine; Newington Nectarine, [Peach] Black Peach of Montreal; Cambra Peach; Monshien's Pacey of Pomperi (Pavie of Pompone?) and [Peach] Chancellor Peach; Catherine Peach; Old Newington Peach. George Brookshaw's 'Pomona Britannica' is the finest work on fruit and flowers ever produced. Its breathtaking images display a level of technical virtuosity and beauty that distinguish this magnificent work as a true work of art. As a retired cabinetmaker, Brookshaw produced his seminal botanical study late in his career, at first publishing it in parts and then as a complete edition in 1812. The fact that this outstanding work took ten years to complete is evident in the quality of its images and the care with which Brookshaw executed each individual picture. 'Pomona Britannica' was produced as a visual record of the best available varieties of fruit in an attempt to encourage gardeners to experiment with growing fruit, and illustrates examples found in the Royal gardens at Hampton Court, Kensington Gardens, and the private gardens of the Prince of Wales in Blackheath. 'Pomona Britannica' differs from other botanical works in its dark aquatinted backgrounds and its stylized compositions. By using aquatint to create a contrasting background, Brookshaw manages to produce a truly dramatic effect. His use of stylized composition distinguishes his pictures from the dry scientific illustrations found in other botanical studies and creates an exceptionally beautiful visual experience. 'Pomona Britannica' is not only a didactic study, it is a masterpiece of illustration in which every picture is a testament to the artist's talent and ingenuity Cf.

Paris: Veuve Goujon fils,, 1804. Octavo (196 x 120 mm). Late 19th or early 20th century half calf and marbled boards by George J. Swayne of Brooklyn, spine decorated gilt in compartments, morocco labels, marbled edges and endpapers. Large folding table opposite page 28. Engraved armorial bookplate of Alexis and Elizabeth du Pont of Rencourt to front pastedown. Lightly toned throughout, one or two spots; an excellent copy. First and only edition. A very rare book, printed in only a few copies for private distribution, as stated in the preface. Written originally in 1788 in opposition to regressive internal tax policy, specifically the tax on hides and leathers, it remained unpublished until this moment when that and other reactionary fiscal measures were about to be revived. A virtual treatise on taxation, it is a good illustration of the immense practical and theoretical knowledge that Du Pont and his fellow Physiocrats were able to bring to the debate over public policy.

Geography Bewitched or a droll Caricature Map of England and Wales.

Printed for Bowles & Carver, No. 69 St. Paul's Church Yard, 4 June 1804., London, - Dighton's caricature map of England and Wales Engraved caricature map with fine original hand-colour. Robert Dighton (1752-1814) was well known as a portrait artist and is regarded as one of the most talented social caricaturists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. As an artist, he was first offered consistent employment by the publisher Carington Bowles (fl.1752-1793). This was the heyday of the so-called 'droll' mezzotint and Robert's output of designs, executed in watercolour and then engraved, was an integral part of his stock. Carington Bowles was among of the most active mapsellers of his day in London, which will explain Dighton?Äôs caricature maps in his ?ÄúGeography Bewitched?Äù series, including Ireland, England and Wales (the present map), and Scotland. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, he would achieve notoriety when he was found to have stolen valuable prints from the British Museum, which he sold through his shop in Charing Cross. His crime was exposed when a dealer, but the name of Samuel Woodburn, having acquired a Rembrandt etching from Dighton, went to the British Museum to compare it with their copy, whereupon he found the print to be missing. Dighton later confessed that he had befriended a museum official by drawing portraits of him and his daughter during his visits and used this relationship to remove prints from the museum hidden in his portfolio. 210 by 180mm. He graduated from the University of Edinburgh Medical School with an MD in 1825 later returning the practice in Dublin at Meath Hospital. he went on to create two important works on cardiac and pulmonary diseases A Treatise on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Diseases of the Chest (1837) and The Diseases of the Heart and Aorta (1854) as well as one of the first treatises on the use of the stethoscope. He emphasised the importance of clinical examination in forming diagnoses, and of ward-based learning for students of medicine. Both CheyneStokes breathing (the alternation of apnoea with tachypnoea) and StokesAdams syndrome are named after him. Stokes' sign is a severe throbbing in the abdomen, at the right of the umbilicus, in acute enteritis. Stokes law is that a muscle situated above an inflamed membrane is often affected with paralysis. In 1858 he was elected a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. In June 1861 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society as: "The Author of A work on the Diseases of the Lungs, and of a work on the Diseases of the Heart and Aorta and of other contributions to Pathological Science. Eminent as a Physician". He was elected President of the Royal Irish Academy for 187476. The Life of George Washington, Commander in Chief of the American forces during the war which established the independence of his country, and first President of the United States. Compiled under the inspection of the Hon. Bushrod Washington, from original papers bequeathed to him by his deceased relative. To which is prefixed, an introduction, containing a compendious view of the colonies planted by the English on the continent of North America. By John Marshall, Chief Justice of the United States, &c. &c. London: Printed for Richard Phillips, 1804-1807. First (and best) London Edition (in octavo) and, according to Howes, the best edition of all. Five octavo volumes (8 3/16 x 5 1/8 inches; 208 x 131 mm.). xxxvi, 579, [1], 2 folding maps; folding engraved frontispiece; viii, 245, 254-633, [3]; folding engraved frontispiece; viii, 570, folding engraved frontispiece and engraving on last page; viii, 684; viii, 843, [5], 10 folding maps, pp. Complete with three folding plates, one vignette and twelve folding maps. Volume two with paper flaw tear (no loss of text) on O2 (pp. 195-196), volume three title-page with small paper flaw crease on blank fore margin, volume four with small paper flaws to lower corner of O2 (pp. 195-196) and upper blank margin of SS7 & SS8 (pp. 637-640). A few minor marginal stains throughout and some very light and occasional browning of the text to volume five. Overall a near fine and much cleaner set than is usually found with the folding plates and maps in excellent and undamaged state. Contemporary mottled sheep, spine ruled in gilt, red morocco spine labels lettered in gilt, three faded, one missing. The hinges and spine extremities have been expertly restored. A near fine, sound and very attractive set - rarely found in its original binding. With the uniform, early ink signature of Peter Trezevant on each front flyleaf. The first London edition has five plates that were omitted in the Philadelphia edition and is the only complete edition of this monumental and indispensable work. John Marshall (1755-1835), served in the House of Representatives (1799-1800), was Secretary of State (1800-1801) under President John Adams, and was the fourth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. During his thirty-five year tenure as Chief Justice, Marshall served under six presidents. He established the Judiciary as independent from, and equal with, the Legislative and Executive branches of the U.S. government, and affirmed that the Court was entitled to exercise judicial review - the power to strike down laws deemed by the Court to be unconstitutional. He made key legal decisions regarding the balance of power between the federal government and the states, and in McCulloch v. Maryland supported an elastic interpretation of the enumerated powers of the legislature in Article 1, Section 8 of the United States Constitution. During the American Revolution he participated in many battles, including Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, Stony Point and Paulus Hook. He was at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, during the winter of 1777-1778 with General George Washington's troops, and it was during his military service that he became personally acquainted with Washington. Present at the creation of the republic, a personal friend of many of the founding fathers, and close friend of Washington, in 1800 Marshall was approached by Washington's nephew, Bushrod, to whom the first president has bequeathed his papers. Marshall agreed to Bushrod's request to write a biography of Washington and, beginning in 1801, Marshall continued to write for five years, ultimately penning over 3,200 pages. More than 7,000 copies of the biography were sold at one dollar per volume. The resulting five volume work, which includes a history of the American colonies omitted from subsequent editions, is considered to be the definitive biography of George Washington. Accurate and comprehensive, it is the primary source to which all subsequent biographers and historians reference. Not just a biography of Washington, it is a detailed, panoramic history of the colonies and early United States. Howes M317. Sabin 44788.

"[Viotti] was the most influential violinist between Tartini and Paganini and the last great representative of the Italian tradition stemming from Corelli.
