Mémoire sur le nouveau genre Pyrosoma.

Paris: An XII, that is, 1804. Quarto, hand-coloured plate and 10 pp.; some toning, but an excellent copy in modern marbled paper wrappers. Very rare indeed: the first printing of one of Péron's earliest scientific articles based on his work during the Baudin voyage. In 1804, newly returned from the voyage, Péron was living in Paris, where he and Lesueur began work on the official Baudin account. He had been resigned to the fact that by sending many of his specimens home, the scientific descriptions of a great number fell to important figures like Cuvier and Jussieu. On his return, however, he pressed on to publish several essays of his own, and one of the first was this essay on "Pyrosoma", bioluminescent organisms common to warm waters (from the Greek pyro "fire", soma "body"). His work on unheralded sea creatures like pyrosoma was the product of his tremendous collecting enthusiasm; he and Lesueur had been overwhelmed and delighted with the myriad different oceanic species they had discovered during the voyage, and later commented that 'their number and diversity afforded an inexhaustible fund of pleasure, and were the subject of philosophical enthusiasm' (quoted in Duyker, François Péron, p. 87).'Péron's work on jellyfish would ultimately include pioneering observations of their anatomy and physiology, and the collection of many previously undescribed species' (Duyker, p. 64). It was for this reason that the various mollusca and zoophytes he collected were so beautifully illustrated in the official account: the subject of the present article, the Pyrosoma atlanticum, was later figured at the upper left corner of plate 30 of the Atlas. The species is also, interestingly, one of only a handful to now be named after Péron, as its official nomenclature has since been updated to Pyrosoma atlanticum Péron, 1804.Any separate scientific publication relating to the voyage is a rarity: very few indeed survive, probably because of the limited audience to which they were distributed. Although not noted here, this article was published the same year in Annales du Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle (pp. 437-46); this does confirm, however, that the present article, newly paginated, is a proper offprint rather than simply an extract from the museum journal. Such offprints, where they exist, are recognised as the original editions since they normally precede the journal printing and were typically done in very limited numbers for the author to distribute.

An Account of the English Colony in New South Wales, from its first settlement in January 1788, to August 1801: with remarks on the dispositions, customs, manners, &c. of the native inhabitants of that country.

London: T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1804. Quarto, with a portrait frontispiece, two maps (one folding), 23 engraved plates (the three natural history plates coloured) and eight text vignettes (that of the emu coloured); a fine uncut copy in modern half calf. The second edition of Collins' famous First Fleet account, a 'detailed and informed record of all important transactions in the colony' (Wantrup). This edition includes considerable changes from the original two-volume edition. Collins' wife, Maria, continued her husband's revision and edited the book, completing it with new information available to the end of 1803. Collins' earnings had been severely affected by his long service in New South Wales, and he had originally published his history of the colony in an attempt to eke out the family income. He and Maria decided to issue this cheaper edition to bring it up to date, and to reach new readers who could not afford the expensive two-volume edition. The fine engraved plates are considered to be after the convict artist Thomas Watling, who worked for John White. Spine sunned.

Johann Matthias Christoph Reinecke (1768-1818), Halberstadt (b) and Coburg (d), was the official cartographer to the Geographical Institute in Weimar. His General Charte von Australien was republished five times between 1801 and 1820 (although Tooley notes only four), and with each edition the latest information was added with new place names appearing and unknown sections of the coast filled in. This is the second state of the map with additional names in New South Wales appearing including Mount Warning north of Sydney and Entrecasteaux Island and Legrands Bay added on the South Coast. North of Bass Strait, Shanks and Portland Bays are named. In all editions Australia is named "New Holland formerly Ulimaroa" and, rather peculiarly, on the right of the continent is the wording New South Wales or Sydney Cove (Neu Süd Wallis oder Sydney-Cove).

A Compendious Geographical and Historical Grammar, exhibiting a brief survey of the terraqueous globe. The second edition, corrected and considerably improved. [with] A Compendious Geographical Dictionary. The third edition, embellished with maps, including those of Australasia and Polynesia. [with] JONES, Stephen. A New Biographical Dictionary. The Fourth edition, corrected.

London: W. Peacock and Sons, 1802-, 1804. Three volumes altogether, duodecimo, engraved folding maps highlighted in watercolour; uniformly bound in contemporary dark blue straight-grained morocco, all edges gilt; in original matching bookform box, gilt tooled spine. Fine example of a gentleman's reference library in miniature, contained in its original custom-made bookform box, and including two geographical reference works - one arranged alphabetically and the other by region. The third volume is a general biographical dictionary from ancient to contemporary times. The two geographical references, which were intended as companion volumes, are of particular interest for what they show of the dissemination of information about discoveries in the Pacific to the general reading public. As late as 1802, some thirty years after the discovery of the east coast by Cook, the Geographical and Historical Grammar notes the existence of New Holland only in a postscript entitled "New Discoveries": 'New Holland, an exceedingly large island in the Southern part of the Indian Ocean, upon the Eastern shore of which, at Botany Bay, the British have, with these few years, begun a new settlement'. This statement is followed by a list of Pacific Ocean discoveries and advice to consult the Geographical Dictionary for further information. The Dictionary, here in its 1804 edition, includes folding maps of Australasia and Polynesia, with individual listings of numerous new discoveries in the Pacific. Whilst there are very brief entries for Botany Bay and New Holland, New Zealand, Otaheite, and "Papous, Land of" (Papua), there is a very detailed entry for the Sandwich Islands, including information about the history and geography of the islands, the native inhabitants, their culture and language. A fine and charming set.

Observations on the Orifices found in certain Poisonous Snakes...

London: W.Bulmer and Co, 1804. Quarto offprint, title-page, 7 pp., engraved plate; recent wrappers. Detailed monograph on the venom glands of deadly serpents, with a detailed engraved plate, published as an offprint of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society.Sir Everard Home (1756-1832) was a surgeon and author of over 100 Royal Society papers, efforts which won him the prestigious Copley medal in 1807. Home wrote primarily on surgery and the challenges associated with post-operative infection. He also dabbled in natural history subjects (of which this offprint is one such example) and was elected keeper and a trustee of the Hunterian Museum in 1817. The plate in this offprint 'is taken from a preparation in the Hunterian Museum'.Home was a problematic individual, described in the Dictionary of National Biography as 'vain, overbearing, and violent in language'. His reputation was seriously damaged by charges of plagiarising the work of his brother-in-law, the surgeon John Hunter (allegations exacerbated by Home's decision to destroy Hunter's papers after retaining them for some thirty years).Such offprints, where they exist, are recognised as the original editions since they normally precede the journal printing and were typically done in very limited numbers for the author to distribute. Very good.

dalla Stamperia e Fonderia del Genio, 1804. In- 8°, m. pelle coeva, tassello al dorso. 78 pp., 1 f. (indice), ritratto dell' autore in medaglione e 2 tavole incise in rame f.t. "The basic principle of free transplantation, contained in the ancient Indian tradition, constituted, when fully understood and applied, the greatest single advance of the nineteenth century. Interest in the principles of the regeneration and transplantation of animal tissues was widespread in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, but it was Giuseppe Baronio, physician and naturalist of milan, who first demonstrated on sheep that full-thckness skin grafts could be successfully transplanted after detachment from the body. In the three experiments which he described in 1804 Baronio removed from the back of a sheep patches of akin which he transplanted to new site on the same aheep, one immediately, a second after eighteen minutes, and a third after one hour of detachment. All became succefully adherent to the new bed" (Gnudi & Webster). "This success also indicates another characteristic of the work to be performed from that time onwards: the use of animals for experiments under closely controlled conditions The hand of science had now fimly grasped the hand of surgery and was leading the latter away from the somewhat wild theorizing to which most surgeons had been prone from the earliest times..."         A Voyage of Discovery to the North Pacific Ocean... Performed in His Majesty's Sloop Providence and her Tender, in the years 1795, 1796, 1797, 1798

London: Cadell & Davies, 1804. Lightly toned, some occasional spotting, recent pencil annotations.. Quarto, with three folding charts coloured in outline and six folding engraved plates and views; contemporary calf, neatly rebacked to style. Famous Pacific rarity and one of the centrepieces of a Pacific voyage collection: Broughton's account of his lengthy Pacific voyage is filled with descriptions of the Northwest Coast, Hawaii and New South Wales. It is a difficult book to find: the Kroepelien collection, for example, had only the German and French versions of the work while Lada-Mocarski describes it as 'Extremely rare... the information contained in it is of prime importance'. In 1795 Broughton was despatched in Bligh's old ship Providence to rendezvous with Vancouver on the Northwest Coast. He sailed to Nootka Sound via Rio de Janeiro, Australia, Tahiti and the Hawaiian Islands; however Vancouver had returned to England some months earlier so he headed down the coast to Monterey and across the Pacific, visiting Hawaii again en route. During his first visit there in 1796 he had introduced grape vines and vegetable seeds from New South Wales. He called at Kealakekua and Honolulu, and gives a description of Kamehameha's spreading sovereignty. On his second visit he called at Waimea, Kauai and Niihau. For the next four years he surveyed the coasts of Asia and the islands of Japan, during which time important maps of Japan, Korea and Formosa were produced, some of them printed for inclusion in this volume. In May 1797 the Providence was wrecked off the coast of Formosa and the crew travelled to Macao in her companion vessel, then were dispersed to other naval and India Company vessels. It is a credit to the Broughton's humanity that he kept track of their subsequent fortunes. He writes in the preface that: 'the ship's company consisted entirely of young men, who were universally sober, attentive, and well-behaved; and here it is melancholy to relate, how few of them ever revisited their native country'. One unusual (and historically appealing) aspect of Broughton's book is his decision to list all members of the crew, including the able seamen, with short notes on their fortunes following the loss of the Providence. For example, we learn that the gunner Thomas Mullen was killed by accident on his passage from China to England, and that the ship's cook Alexander Bishop died in the hospital at the Cape of Good Hope in 1798. The list makes for maudlin reading as an appalling number were lost at sea in subsequent calamities. This book is of some interest as early Australiana as the Providence cruised the coast of New South Wales during August 1795, including an interim stay at Port Jackson and a week at Port Stephens. Here Broughton encountered four survivors of a band of convicts who in 1790 had escaped from Rose Hill, stolen a boat and sailed northward. Five years in the wilderness had reduced the men to a pitiful state, Broughton describing them as 'miserable half-starved objects, depending on the hospitality of the natives for their subsistence, who occasionally supplied them with a part of their provisions'.The narrative contains tantalising glimpses of the Pacific at the close of the eighteenth-century, a world on the verge of momentous and irreversible change. For example, Broughton relates barter with a convict beachcomber in Atooi (Hawaiian group), concluding the exchange as follows: 'The European now left us in his canoe with some recompense for his attentions: this man had been transported to Botany Bay, and came thence in an American brig called the Mercury; he deserted from her at this island, and is much courted by Taava, whose cause he has preferred to that of the young chief Tamoerrie'.This is an unusually pleasing copy of a true rarity, with fine fresh plates and maps. It includes the final advertisement leaf listing such titles as the second edition of Collins' English Colony in New South Wales and Coxe's Account of the Russian Discoveries between Asia and America. Provenance: Signature on title-page of Sir David Wright, British Ambassador to Japan 1996-1999, upon his visit to Miyakoyima in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the shipwreck of H.M.S. Providence.

The Works, viz. his fifty-five Dialogues, and twelve Epistles, Translated from the Greek; Nine of the Dialogues by the late Floyer Sydenham, and the Remainder by Thomas Taylor: with occasional annotations on the nine dialogues translated by Sydenham, and copious notes, by the latter translator, in which is given the substance of nearly all the existing Greek Ms. commentaries on the philosophy of Plato, and a considerable portion of such as are already published, In five volumes.

London: printed for Thomas Taylor, by R. Wilks, and sold by E. Jeffery and R. H. Evans, 1804 - Five volumes, quarto (295 x 230 mm). Recent full speckled calf, boards with two double-line gilt rule borders and a single line border in black, spines decorated gilt in compartments, direct lettered and numbered gilt, marbled endpapers and edges, blue silk ribbon place markers. Occasional light spotting and the odd marginal stain, short tear to one leaf in volumes two and five; an excellent set. Engraved plate of geometrical figures in volume one, errata leaf in volume three. First edition of the philosopher Thomas Taylor's masterful translation of Plato, the first English translation of the complete works of Plato, revising and completing the work begun by Floyer Sydenham, together with his extensive notes on contemporary Greek manuscript commentaries. "It was through Taylor's translations that the Romantic poets had access to Platonism: they are probably one of the sources of Blake's mythology, as well as his repudiation of the natural science of Bacon and Newton, and his late tempera painting The Arlington Court Picture was almost certainly inspired by Taylor's translation of Porphyry's On the Cave of the Nymphs; there is no doubt that Coleridge's acquaintance with Proclus was assisted by Taylor's translation and commentary, though Coleridge's appreciation of Taylor is invariably laced with acid criticism. Taylor's immediate influence in England was short-lived; only at the end of the century did those with an enthusiasm for ancient Gnosticism, such as G. R. S. Mead, revive his memory. His fate in America was very different. R. W. Emerson read Taylor's translations enthusiastically, and Taylor's influence was felt among Emerson's disciples, adepts of 'transcendental philosophy' such as Amos Bronson Alcott, William T. Harris, Thomas M. Johnson, Hiram K. Jones, and Thomas Wentworth Higginson, though that influence had waned by the end of the century. Emily Dickinson, who was a friend of Higginson, therefore probably owed her Platonism ultimately to Thomas Taylor." (ODNB). Lowndes 1877. [Attributes: First Edition]

Meijin ranchiku gafu [trans : Manual of Instructions on How to Draw Orchids & Bamboo]

Numerous illus. in the text (several printed in delicate colors of blueish green, green, & brown, some printed in grey ink). 30 folding leaves; 40 folding leaves. Two vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. block printed title labels on upper cover of Vol. II (lacking on Vol. I), stitched as issued (stitching a little loose). N.p.: 1804. This is a very rare drawing manual containing instructions with examples for portraying orchids and bamboo. It is a classic example of gafu, based on the Chinese idea of copying the masters. The woodcuts show how to draw - with a brush - leaves of varying thicknesses, and in which order; how to achieve an aesthetic balance; how to depict different species of orchids and bamboo; details of branches and leaves; how to illustrate the complicated center of the orchid flowers using a simplified brush stroke; examples drawn by various masters; etc. The delicacy of some of the woodcuts make them appear to be almost abstract art. Fine set of a most beautiful book.

"In these experiments, the body became violently agitated and even raised itself as if about to walk, the arms alternately rose and fell and the forearm was made to hold a weight of several pounds (...), natural respiration was also artificially restablished" (Mottelay). DSB I-107 ; Mottelay p. 304 ; Poggendorff I-27 ; Wheeler Gift n° 660.

(No pl.), A. Suntach, 1804.Engraving depicting the capture of the two sons of Tipoo Sultan after Henry Singleton by F. dal Pedro. Ca. 29,5 x 41 cm.Following his defeat in the Third Mysore War (1790-1792) the British made Tipu Sultan cede part of his dominions, pay a substantial financial settlement and surrender two of his 16 sons as hostages. Princes Mohin-ud-din (or Moiz-ud-din) (aged eight) and Abdul Khalik (aged ten) were accordingly delivered to Lord Cornwallis, the Governor-General of India, at Seringapatam on 26 February 1792. In February 1794, after the fulfilment of the treaty, the princes returned to Seringapatam. They enjoyed a few years of peace but the conflict between Mysore and the British resumed in 1799. On 4 May that year Mysore's capital was captured and Tipu Sultan was killed alongside 10,000 of his subjects. The princes were captured by Major-General David Baird, who treated them with great respect and arranged for their safe passage out of the devastated city. After laying their dead father to rest they were then sent to Vellore. In 1806, following a mutiny at Vellore among the soldiers of the Madras Army, the princes were exiled to Calcutta along with the rest of Tipu's family, lest they become a figurehead for opposition to British rule in southern India. - Fine.

Inquiry into the Nature and Origin of Public Wealth

1804 - MAITLAND, James. An Inquiry into the Nature and Origin of Public Wealth, and into the Means and Causes of Its Increase. Edinburgh and London: Arch. Constable and T.N. Longman & O. Rees, 1804. Octavo, contemporary full brown tree calf rebacked, red morocco spine label. $1800.First edition of James Maitland, Earl of Lauderdale’s discourse on public wealth, in which he argues against Adam Smith’s concept of "value."In 1796 James Maitland, Earl of Lauderdale, called the attention of the House of Lords to the state of the public finances, but at the time did not offer a formal resolution. Instead he embarked upon a series of writings on the subject. In 1804 he published his Inquiry, which attracted considerable attention, partly because in it Maitland chose to criticize Adam Smith as "the person who has struggled most to establish the opinion, that labor may be considered as an accurate measure of value." For Maitland, "wealth is everything that possesses utility; but individual riches possess utility and scarcity. These two elements determine value" (Roll, 307). Maitland also disagreed with Smith’s contention that there is never "too much" capital and that every saver is a public benefactor (Niehans, 80, 86). Large folding table at rear. Kress 4816. Goldsmiths 18801. Contemporary armorial bookplate of Henry Dundas, First Viscount Melville, "the most powerful man in Scotland for nearly 30 years" (DNB). Dundas began his career in law as Solicitor General for Scotland; throughout his later career, he was committed to increasing the economic strength of his country and managing the public wealth. 689-700 do referido catálogo. Series of four Peaches], From 'Pomona Britannica; or, A Collection of the Most Esteemed Fruits'.

London: G. Brookshaw -1812 1804 - Set of four aquatint engravings, with some stipple, printed in colours and finished by hand. [Nectarine] Vermash Nectarine; Violet Hative Nectarine; Roman Nectarine; North's Scarlet Nectarine; Elrouge Nectarine; Peterborough Nectarine, . [Nectarine] Dutillees Nectarine; Burgnon's Old Nectarine; Brugnon's Round Nectarine; Murray Nectarine; Newington Nectarine, [Peach] Black Peach of Montreal; Cambra Peach; Monshien's Pacey of Pomperi (Pavie of Pompone?) and [Peach] Chancellor Peach; Catherine Peach; Old Newington Peach. George Brookshaw's 'Pomona Britannica' is the finest work on fruit and flowers ever produced. Its breathtaking images display a level of technical virtuosity and beauty that distinguish this magnificent work as a true work of art. As a retired cabinetmaker, Brookshaw produced his seminal botanical study late in his career, at first publishing it in parts and then as a complete edition in 1812. The fact that this outstanding work took ten years to complete is evident in the quality of its images and the care with which Brookshaw executed each individual picture. 'Pomona Britannica' was produced as a visual record of the best available varieties of fruit in an attempt to encourage gardeners to experiment with growing fruit, and illustrates examples found in the Royal gardens at Hampton Court, Kensington Gardens, and the private gardens of the Prince of Wales in Blackheath. 'Pomona Britannica' differs from other botanical works in its dark aquatinted backgrounds and its stylized compositions. By using aquatint to create a contrasting background, Brookshaw manages to produce a truly dramatic effect. His use of stylized composition distinguishes his pictures from the dry scientific illustrations found in other botanical studies and creates an exceptionally beautiful visual experience. 'Pomona Britannica' is not only a didactic study, it is a masterpiece of illustration in which every picture is a testament to the artist's talent and ingenuity Cf.

Paris: Veuve Goujon fils,, 1804. Octavo (196 x 120 mm). Late 19th or early 20th century half calf and marbled boards by George J. Swayne of Brooklyn, spine decorated gilt in compartments, morocco labels, marbled edges and endpapers. Large folding table opposite page 28. Engraved armorial bookplate of Alexis and Elizabeth du Pont of Rencourt to front pastedown. Lightly toned throughout, one or two spots; an excellent copy. First and only edition. A very rare book, printed in only a few copies for private distribution, as stated in the preface. Written originally in 1788 in opposition to regressive internal tax policy, specifically the tax on hides and leathers, it remained unpublished until this moment when that and other reactionary fiscal measures were about to be revived. A virtual treatise on taxation, it is a good illustration of the immense practical and theoretical knowledge that Du Pont and his fellow Physiocrats were able to bring to the debate over public policy.

Geography Bewitched or a droll Caricature Map of England and Wales.

Printed for Bowles & Carver, No. 69 St. Paul's Church Yard, 4 June 1804., London, - Dighton's caricature map of England and Wales Engraved caricature map with fine original hand-colour. Robert Dighton (1752-1814) was well known as a portrait artist and is regarded as one of the most talented social caricaturists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. As an artist, he was first offered consistent employment by the publisher Carington Bowles (fl.1752-1793). This was the heyday of the so-called 'droll' mezzotint and Robert's output of designs, executed in watercolour and then engraved, was an integral part of his stock. Carington Bowles was among of the most active mapsellers of his day in London, which will explain Dighton?Äôs caricature maps in his ?ÄúGeography Bewitched?Äù series, including Ireland, England and Wales (the present map), and Scotland. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, he would achieve notoriety when he was found to have stolen valuable prints from the British Museum, which he sold through his shop in Charing Cross. His crime was exposed when a dealer, but the name of Samuel Woodburn, having acquired a Rembrandt etching from Dighton, went to the British Museum to compare it with their copy, whereupon he found the print to be missing. Dighton later confessed that he had befriended a museum official by drawing portraits of him and his daughter during his visits and used this relationship to remove prints from the museum hidden in his portfolio. 210 by 180mm. (8.25 by 7 inches).
