The Narrative of Captain David Woodard and four seamen, who lost their ship while in a boat at sea, and surrendered themselves up to the Malays in the island of Celebes

London: J. Johnson, 1804. Octavo, silhouette portrait frontispiece of Woodward, two folding maps of the Celebes and two plates of Malay proas; a very good uncut copy in worn contemporary quarter roan. Medley of marine disasters. Second edition; a popular account of an exotic shipwreck, appended with a mixture of bold and cautionary tales from across the globe, including Captain Bligh's narrative of the Bounty mutiny, and an account of the wreck of the Pandora. Captain Woodward's tale is a grim one indeed: 'In January of 1793, Woodard sailed in the American ship Enterprise from Batavia, bound for Manila. Sent off in a boat to purchase provisions from another ship, they found themselves separated from their own ship after a storm. The seamen spent many days trying to locate their ship, but they were finally forced to land on Celebes, where one of them was murdered by the Malays and the others were taken into captivity' (Hill). The introduction is the work of William Vaughan, attributed as the editor of this book. To Woodward's narrative he has appended further cautionary tales, including the Bounty mutiny, the Antelope and Pandora wrecks, and the sufferings of the crew of the Shah Hormazier in Torres Strait - all offered to readers as 'a valuable seaman's guide'.

Observations on the Orifices found in certain Poisonous Snakes

London: W.Bulmer and Co, 1804. Quarto offprint, title-page, 7 pp., engraved plate; very good in recent wrappers. Snakes preserved at the Hunterian Museum. Detailed monograph on the venom glands of deadly serpents, with a detailed engraved plate, published as an offprint of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. Sir Everard Home (1756-1832) was a surgeon and author of over 100 Royal Society papers, efforts which won him the prestigious Copley medal in 1807. Home wrote primarily on surgery and the challenges associated with post-operative infection. He also dabbled in natural history subjects (of which this offprint is one such example) and was elected keeper and a trustee of the Hunterian Museum in 1817. The plate in this offprint 'is taken from a preparation in the Hunterian Museum'. Home was a problematic individual, described in the Dictionary of National Biography as 'vain, overbearing, and violent in language'. His reputation was seriously damaged by charges of plagiarising the work of his brother-in-law, the surgeon John Hunter (allegations exacerbated by Home's decision to destroy Hunter's papers after retaining them for some thirty years). Such offprints, where they exist, are recognised as the original editions since they normally precede the journal printing and were typically done in very limited numbers for the author to distribute.

Paris: V.e Nyon, 1804. 1st Edition. Half cloth. Very good. 1st Edition. Half cloth. 8vo (201 × 132 mm), pp. viii, 327, [8], one folding engraved plate and 16 folding printed tables; some light foxing; tear with loss to inner corner of front free endpaper; bookplate of Philippe de Vilmorin to front pastedown; hinges cracked; else very good in contemporary cloth backed boards, somewhat worn. First edition of a pioneering work of ecology, and the first scientific work to use the metrical system. The Recherches, Nicolas-Théodore de Saussure's (1767-1845) principle work, 'which took seven years to write, laid the foundation of a new science, phytochemistry. Saussure examined the chief active components of plants, their synthesis, and their decomposition. He specified the relationship between vegetation and the environment and here, too, did pioneering work in what became the fields of pedology and ecology' (P. E. Pilet, DSB, XII, p. 124) Among the scientific advances made in the book, Saussure demonstrated that the increase in mass of the plant could not be due solely to uptake of water, but also the uptake of CO2, thus providing the groundwork for our understanding of photosynthesis. 'Using new techniques, he corroborated, with great precision, the observations of Mariotte, which had given rise to the Boyle-Mariotte law.' (Ibid., p. 123) Another decisive feature of this work is its of use of the metrical system of measurement, introduced by 1799, making it the first scientific work to do so.Provenance: Philippe André de Vilmorin (1776-1862) was a leading French horticulturist, and founder of the Arboretum Vilmorin, a private arboretum founded on the site of a former hunting lodge of Louis XIV on the Île-de-France, and the Arboretum national des Barres, an experimental forest. More recently this copy was in the possession of the botanists Robert and Jelena de Belder, who with Robert's brother George, built the Arboretum Kalmthout, Belgium's most famous botanical gardens.Bolton I, 800; Cole, 1160; Duveen, 531; Partington III, 283; not in Ferguson; COPAC shows five copies in UK institutions.

French text, 8vo, approximately 190 x 125 mm, 7½ x 5 inches, woodcut title vignette, 4 woodcut illustrations printed on 3 pages, 1 large folding plate of the Minerve, plus at the end 1 EXTRA folding plate (probably a facsimile) of a fantasy flying machine which seems to come from an Italian work, pages: 36, (4), bound in modern half calf over cloth sides, raised bands and gilt decoration to spine, contrasting gilt lettered labels, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Corners and hinges very slightly rubbed, small blemish to upper hinge, front inner paper hinge cracked, 2 very small repairs to edge of front endpaper, slightly foxed throughout, mostly light, the folding plate is faintly foxed at the edges, there is a small light stain at the top outer corner, a tiny piece missing from the lower corner and a very short closed edge tear at the inner edge (repaired on reverse), the unnumbered illustrated pages at the end are very faintly foxed at the edges, otherwise a very good copy. Étienne - Gaspard Robert (1763 - 1837) was a famous Belgian stage magician pioneering projection techniques for phantasmagoria shows, at the same time pursuing an academic career as professor of physics at Liege, specialising in optics. He also had vast experience with balloons - he was Commandant des Aerostiers during the war, serving under General Jourdain in Belgium and Holland in 1803 / 4, providing valuable observations on the enemy troops and movements from tethered and untethered balloon observing stations; he is also regarded by some as the inventor of the parachute. There was nothing about the balloon described in this pamphlet that would have worked, and Robertson knew it, intending his work to be more of caricature of existing attempts in flight than as a science fiction creation. The balloon was to have been one of the biggest ever designed with a 150 foot diameter for a load of 161,000 lbs including 60 scientists, plus some ladies who have their own quarters, and it was to be fitted out with a library, church, exercise area, chemistry laboratory, music room, food and wine storage, kitchen, the only place where a fire is allowed, etc. It is also provided with a small ship underneath for sea landings. The first edition which is extremely scarce was first published in Vienne, France in 1804. This is mentioned on the title page and see Tissandier, Bibliographie Aeronautique page 33.         View of Sydney Cove, New South Wales

London: F. Jukes, 10 April, 1804. Hand-coloured aquatint, 435 x 605 mm., a good example, complete with caption, in an old frame. One of the great early views of Sydney. A fine early view of Sydney, just the second view of Australia to have been separately published, and the earliest depiction of boat-building in the infant colony. The few large separately-issued early Australian views are all of great rarity, and this magnificent coloured aquatint engraving is a particularly good example of this famous image with excellent original colouring. Edward Dayes, the English artist of this fine aquatint, had earlier links with Australia. He had worked on sketches by the convict artist Thomas Watling which were published in David Collins's An Account of the English Colony in New South Wales, London, 1798, and on engravings published in John Hunter's An Historical Journal of the Transactions at Port Jackson and Norfolk Island, London, 1793. The caption to the engraving reads "From an Original Picture in the possession of Isaac Clementson Esq. Drawn by E. Dayes from a Picture painted at the Colony. Engraved by F. Jukes, London, Published April 10, 1804 by F. Jukes, No. 10 Howland St.". The original picture referred to here, now lost, was presumably a painting done in the colony by Thomas Watling. The Government Dock Yard, established by John Hunter, shows the frame of Governor Hunter's brig 'Portland' partly finished; her frame had been laid down in 1797, but as Governor King noted in 'Return of Government Shipping', 9th November 1802, five years later she was still "in Frame, no shipwrights to work on her

Voyage en Chine et en Tartarie... traduit de l'anglais

Paris: la veuve Lepetit, 1804. Six volumes, small octavo, and an atlas of uniform size, with twenty double-page plates; marginal wormholes affecting 50 pp. in the last text volume; original dark calf decorated in blind and gilt, an attractive set in excellent condition. Beautiful French edition. A most attractive set of the delightful 'Bibliothèque portative' edition, a diminutive French version of the official narrative of the important Macartney embassy to China, by which the British sought to establish formal diplomatic and commercial relations. Staunton accompanied the embassy as Secretary, and compiled his book chiefly from the papers of the Ambassador and his fellow envoys. It is of great interest not only for its description of the exotic court of the emperor Qianlong (1793-1794) but also for its descriptions of the many places visited en route at the close of the eighteenth century.

        Map of America.

London 24 Rathbone Place 4th September 1804 - Engraved wall map, fine original full wash colour, dissected and mounted on linen, edged in blue silk. Dimensions: 1212 × 1467 mm (47.75 × 57.75 inches). A rare and attractive wall map of America in full-wash colour. Arrowsmith drew from several sources whilst composing the map, most notably from Mackenzie's 1789 exploration of the Rocky Mountains and the Canadian Northwest, an account of which was subsequently produced in 1798. Mackenzie had been comissioned by the North-West Fur Company and, remarkably, traversed almost 3,000 miles in just 120 days. Early editions of this map, of which the present example is one, also act as a snap-shot of America before the exploration by Alexander von Humboldt. In later editions Arrowsmith incorporates many of Humbolt's findings. Aaron Arrowsmith (1750-1823) was the finest cartographer of his generation. Although he received little formal education it is believed that he was taught some mathematical instruction by William Emerson, an author of several books on the application of mathamatics to the area of cartography. Around 1770 Arrowsmith moved to London to seek employment. It is believed that he worked for William Faden and then joined John Cary Sr. in the early 1780s. There he provided the measurements for John Cary's early publication detailing the roads from London to Falmouth; his first signed work. Map Forum, Isue 5, p.20-24.         Mémoire sur le nouveau genre Pyrosoma

An XII, that is, Paris 1804 - Quarto, hand-coloured plate and 10 pp.; some toning, but an excellent copy in modern marbled paper wrappers. One of Peron's first scientific articles from the voyage. Very rare indeed: the first printing of one of Péron's earliest scientific articles based on his work during the Baudin voyage. In 1804, newly returned from the voyage, Péron was living in Paris, where he and Lesueur began work on the official Baudin account. He had been resigned to the fact that by sending many of his specimens home, the scientific descriptions of a great number fell to important figures like Cuvier and Jussieu. On his return, however, he pressed on to publish several essays of his own, and one of the first was this essay on "Pyrosoma", bioluminescent organisms common to warm waters (from the Greek pyro "fire", soma "body"). His work on unheralded sea creatures like pyrosoma was the product of his tremendous collecting enthusiasm; he and Lesueur had been overwhelmed and delighted with the myriad different oceanic species they had discovered during the voyage, and later commented that 'their number and diversity afforded an inexhaustible fund of pleasure, and were the subject of philosophical enthusiasm' (quoted in Duyker, François Péron, p. 87). 'Péron's work on jellyfish would ultimately include pioneering observations of their anatomy and physiology, and the collection of many previously undescribed species' (Duyker, p. 64). It was for this reason that the various mollusca and zoophytes he collected were so beautifully illustrated in the official account: the subject of the present article, the Pyrosoma atlanticum, was later figured at the upper left corner of plate 30 of the Atlas. The species is also, interestingly, one of only a handful to now be named after Péron, as its official nomenclature has since been updated to Pyrosoma atlanticum Péron, 1804. Any separate scientific publication relating to the voyage is a rarity: very few indeed survive, probably because of the limited audience to which they were distributed. Although not noted here, this article was published the same year in Annales du Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle (pp. 437-46); this does confirm, however, that the present article, newly paginated, is a proper offprint rather than simply an extract from the museum journal. Such offprints, where they exist, are recognised as the original editions since they normally precede the journal printing and were typically done in very limited numbers for the author to distribute.         Paterson's Twenty Four Miles Round London, with References to Seats of the Nobility and Gentry.

1804 - London: Bowles & Carver, 1804. Original colour. Dissected and laid on linen as issued , 660 x 660mm A very decorative map of the environs of London with numbered references surrounding the map, referring to the owners of various estates. It extends from Windsor Castle in the west, clockwise to Hertford, Harlow, Billericay, Tilbury, Gravesend, Reigate, Dorking & Staines. Of particular interest is the Surrey Iron Railway, which is probably Britain's first public railway. Established by Act of Parliament in 1801, the nine-mile track from Wandsworth and Croydon was built by William Jessop and opened in1803. Independent hauliers, using their own horse-drawn wagons, were allowed to use the tracks to haul goods at speeds of four miles an hour, charged per ton per mile. HOWGEGO No. 212a State 4

THE HISTORY OF VIRGINIA, FROM ITS FIRST SETTLEMENT TO THE PRESENT DAY

Petersburg, Va. 1804-1805/1816.. Four volumes. Later allegorical print of Virginia bound in near front of first volume. Late 19th century three quarter calf and marbled boards, spines richly gilt, t.e.g. Light shelfwear, mostly to the heads of spines. Two bookplates on front pastedown of each volume (including that of Joseph Y. Jeanes of Philadelphia). Two early ownership signatures on titlepage of first and second volumes (J. Smith Davison and W. Davison). Text lightly tanned (moreso in fourth volume), scattered foxing. Very good overall. An important history of Virginia, here present with the very rare fourth volume. That volume, issued years after the rest of the set, was largely destroyed by fire and only a few copies have survived. The author, well known as a dramatist, was an Irish emigrant and enthusiastic Jeffersonian. After his death in a duel in 1808, the fourth volume was written by Skelton Jones and Louis Girardin, supposedly with the aid of Thomas Jefferson, to whom it is dedicated. That volume covers 1775 to 1781. Jefferson also assisted Burk in the research for the second and third volumes by lending him manuscripts, newspapers, and other materials, and Burk quotes Jefferson's NOTES ON THE STATE OF VIRGINIA... throughout his HISTORY... (see Sowerby for details). "The lengthy appendices are of the highest historical importance" - Eberstadt. HOWES B971, "b." SABIN 9273. HAYNES 2499. CHURCH 1298. SOWERBY, JEFFERSON'S LIBRARY 464.         NEW-YORK TERM REPORTS OF CASES ARGUED AND DETERMINED IN THE SUPREME COURT OF THAT STATE

New York. 1804-6.. New York. 1804-6.. Three volumes. v,iv,619; [2],[6],405; vii,360,16pp. Contemporary calf. Rubbed, slight wear, hinges of volume one cracked but cords sound. Overall good. Prior to the publication of these reports, all legal reports issued in the United States had been private efforts. In 1804 the New York legislature provided for the appointment of a reporter to the state supreme court, and Caines became the first official reporter in the United States. According to the DAB, the three volumes of reports he issued were "distinguished by brevity and accuracy, and for long enjoyed a high reputation with both bench and bar." These reports thus inaugurated a new era in the reporting of cases, as well as including a number of important cases from the Jeffersonian era. DAB II, p.404.

A Compendious Geographical and Historical Grammar , exhibiting a brief survey of the terraqueous globe. The second edition, corrected and considerably improved. [with] A Compendious Geographical Dictionary. The third edition, embellished with maps, including those of Australasia and Polynesia. [with] JONES, Stephen. A New Biographical Dictionary. The Fourth edition, corrected

      W. Peacock and Sons, 1802-, London 1804 - Three volumes altogether, duodecimo, engraved folding maps highlighted in watercolour; uniformly bound in contemporary dark blue straight-grained morocco, all edges gilt; a fine and charming set in an original matching bookform box, gilt tooled spine. Delightful small reference library. Fine example of a gentleman's reference library in miniature, contained in its original custom-made bookform box, and including two geographical reference works - one arranged alphabetically and the other by region. The third volume is a general biographical dictionary from ancient to contemporary times. The two geographical references, which were intended as companion volumes, are of particular interest for what they show of the dissemination of information about discoveries in the Pacific to the general reading public. As late as 1802, some thirty years after the discovery of the east coast by Cook, the Geographical and Historical Grammar notes the existence of New Holland only in a postscript entitled "New Discoveries": 'New Holland, an exceedingly large island in the Southern part of the Indian Ocean, upon the Eastern shore of which, at Botany Bay, the British have, with these few years, begun a new settlement'. This statement is followed by a list of Pacific Ocean discoveries and advice to consult the Geographical Dictionary for further information. The Dictionary, here in its 1804 edition, includes folding maps of Australasia and Polynesia, with individual listings of numerous new discoveries in the Pacific. Whilst there are very brief entries for Botany Bay and New Holland, New Zealand, Otaheite, and "Papous, Land of" (Papua), there is a very detailed entry for the Sandwich Islands, including information about the history and geography of the islands, the native inhabitants, their culture and language.         Travels in Lower and Upper Egypt, during the Campaigns of general Bonaparte. In Two Volumes. Translated from the last corrected and augmented Edition of the Author; accompanied by the whole of the original Atlas, comprising One Undred and Forty Copper-Plate prints on large Atlas paper; and forming altogether the only genuine and authentic Edition of The Travels of Denon. 2 Vols. + Atlas. (Planches du Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Egypte).

London, Taylor and Co., 1804. - Atlas: (Paris, Didot, 1802). 4to (30x24 cm.) and folio (54x42 cm.). 2 contemp. hcalf. Gilt spines and titlelabels with gilt lettering. Spines a bit rubbed. XVI,198,(2);(2),131,(8) pp. Wide-margined. A few scattered brownspots. Atlasvolume, bound in contemp. hcalf with wear to spine and spine-end as well as corners, is complete and contains 143 engraved plates (numb. 1-141 + 20bis a. 54bis), some large and folded. The plates with views, antiquities, architecture, maps etc. etc. A few scattered brownspots, some plates with faint marginal dampstaining.. This is the first complete work in English of Denon's famous travel to Egypt as it is here accompanied by the original French atlas of 1802, and not to be confused with the English translation of 1802 which reduced the plates to 60 instead of 140. "The object, therefore, of the present translation is to amend this defect (with the reduction of the plates), an supply the reader with these celebrated Travels as they were published by M. Denon himself, consisting of one hundred and forty Copper-plate Prints (the fac-similes of his own original designs), with the different notes and illustrations, - and corrected from the last French edition, in which many improvements have been made." (The translator's advertisement)."At Bonaparte's invitation he joined the expedition to Egypt as part of the arts and literature section of the Institut d'Égypte, and thus found the opportunity of gathering the materials for his most important literary and artistic work. He accompanied General Desaix to Upper Egypt, and made numerous sketches of the monuments of ancient art, sometimes under the very fire of the enemy. The results were published in his Voyage dans la basse et la haute Egypte (Journey in Lower and Upper Egypt), published as two volumes in 1802. The work crowned his reputation both as an archaeologist and as an artist, and sparked the Egyptian Revival in architecture and decorative arts."(Wikipedia)

An account of the Cape of Good Hope; containing an historical view of its original settlement by the Dutch, its capture by the British in 1795, and the different policy pursued there by the Dutch and British government. Also a sketch of its geography, productions, the manners and customs of the inhabitants, etc. etc. With a view of the political and commercial advantages which might be derived from its possessions by Great Britain.

London, C. and R. Baldwin, 1804.4to. Contemporary calf with gilt monogram B with crown on both sides within gilt fillets, inner dentelles, spine gilt with red morocco title-label (hinges weak but holding). XII,339; (4) pp. * First edition. - Captain Robert Percival (1765-1826) was the first to enter Cape Town in 1796 and he remained there till 1797. His narrative affords considerable information respecting the state of the colony at the close of the eighteenth century, it was warmly received at the time. His criticisms of the Dutch settlers, their laziness, inhospitality, and low civilisation, are severe. There is some account of the capture of the Cape and the Dutch fleet in 1795 and the country. Attention is drawn to the value of the Cape as a British possession, and the weakness of the Dutch government which took over the colony from the British in 1803.Mendelssohn II, p.152; S.A.B. III, p.652; DNB p.827; Cat. NHSM I, p.208..
