Hrsg. v. Walther. - München, Scherrerschen Kunst- und Buchhandlung, 1804, 8°, XVI, 168 pp., feiner Pappband der Zeit.. Erste Auflage. Feines Exemplar a.d. E.G.Boring, History of experimental psycholgoy., 2nd.Ed., 1957, pp.57-58

With 105 fine hand-coloured engraved plates. Contemporary calf, sides with gilt border, gilt ornameneted spines with red and green gilt lettered label. A fine copy of the first major iconography on Coleoptera and one of the finest entomological works published in the Netherlands. Johannes Eusebius Voet (1706-1778) was a physician at Dordrecht. The Dutch Entomological Society has a splendid album on insects and their metamorphosis, following closely Goedaert, by his hand. According to Landwehr, Voet was as well the author as the artist of the 'Catalogus Systematicus Coleopterorum'. Most of the splendid plates are engraved by C.F.C. Kleeman, Roesel's son-in-law, in the same elaborate manner and preciseness of detail that we know from his other works. The text of the present work is written in Latin, French and Dutch.         The Narrative of Captain David Woodard and Four Seamen, who lost their Ship while in a Boat at Sea, and surrendered themselves up to the Malays, in the Island of Celebes; containing an Interesting Account of their Sufferings and also an Account of the Manners and Customs of the Country, and a Description of the Harbours and Coast, &c. Together with an Introduction and an Appendix, containing Narratives of Various Escapes from Shipwrecks holding out a Valuable Seaman's Guide, and the Importance of Union, Confidence, and Perseverance in the Midst of Distress.

London: J. Johnson, 1804 - Octavo (211 × 128 mm). Contemporary purple half calf on dark green seaweed sprigged cloth, tan morocco label, narrow bands with double gilt rules, compartments with concentric panels, gilt rules at spine and corner edges, all edges marbled, dun endpapers. Just a little chafed at the extremities, bookplate quite neatly removed from the front pastedown, some foxing and browning on the maps, light toning overall, but a very handsome copy. Silhouette portrait frontispiece, folding map of the Island of Celebes, larger folding map of "the Western Part of the Island," and a double-page plate of "the Proas, Canoes, and Implements of War of the Malays," half-title bound in. First edition. "In January of 1793, Woodard sailed in the American ship Enterprise form Batavia, bound for Manila. Sent off in a boat with five others to purchase provisions from another ship, they found themselves separated from their own ship after a storm they were forced to land on Celebes, where one of them was murdered by the Malays and the others taken into captivity. They escaped with the help of a Mohammedan priest and gradually made their way to Macassar and then back to Batavia. Included in the book is a geographical account of the island of Celebes, a brief vocabulary of the Malay language" (Hill). Woodard's account was edited for publication by William Vaughan, a director of the Royal Exchange Assurance Corporation, promoter of the port of London, and philanthropist in the interest of the common seaman, and is dedicated to his maternal uncle, Capt. Benjamin Hallowell, one of Nelson's "band of brothers" who served at the Battle of Nile. Vaughan was involved in trying to establish a "Society for promoting the Means of preserving Ships and Lives in Moments of Danger and Accidents", a manifesto for which is included as an appendix, and he intended Woodard's narrative to be "practically useful as well as interesting", the centre-piece for the promotion of his wider cause. To this end, the main text is augmented with a series of appendices including "Lieutenant Bligh's Narrative"; the losses of the Pandora and the Hobart; "Dr. Lind's advice to prevent the want of provisions at Sea"; a register of "Accidents, Shipwrecks, and Escapes"; and a list of "Books useful to Seamen", which begins with Robinson Crusoe. A very pretty copy of this interesting work. Hill, p.331; Huntress 63 [Attributes: First Edition]

        Plate XXXIII

London 1804 - The publication of the Pomona Britannica marked the re-emergence of the acclaimed English artist George Brookshaw (1751-1823) into the public eye after a total disappearance of nearly a decade. A successful cabinetmaker with the patronage of the Prince of Wales, Brookshaw suddenly disappeared from view in the mid-1790’s, and with the Pomona Britannica he not only trumpeted his return but demonstrated the skills he had acquired in a new metier: botanical art. Characterized by the highest standards of production and artistic quality, the superb illustrations that Brookshaw drew and engraved for the Pomona Britannica remain perhaps the most sumptuous and distinctive of the early 19th century. Brookshaw’s fine illustrations make excellent use of the rich, modulated tones that the aquatint process creates. The elegantly arranged and richly colored fruits emerge from deep brown backgrounds or float on a softly mottled light ground, creating a presence unlike that of any other botanical illustrations. Brookshaw asserts in the preface that the Pomona Britannica was an enduring work created for the enjoyment and edification of “succeeding generations.” The beauty and uniqueness of his illustrations guarantees the lasting value of this most exceptional work. This hand-colored aquatint engraving, Plate XXXIII, features three types of peaches: the Black Peach of Montreal, Cambra Peach and Monshien Pacey of Pomeri. A folio size print, measuring 22" x 18", this engraving is in excellent mint condition. The rich brown backdrop allows the dynamic coloring of the peaches to be come out, as well as the detailed leaves and pink flowers. The peaches are expertly shadowed and highlighted, giving them a three-dimensional quality. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Great Black Woodpecker, Picus martius (Linn)

This splendid hand-colored, folio-size lithograph, Great black Woodpecker, Picus martius (Linn), from John Gould’s (1804-1881) monumental book "Birds Europe" (1832-1837) is in very good condition with light foxing throughout. Measuring 21.5" x 14.5", this lithograph magnificently displays the author’s scientific skill and attention to detail. These Great Black Woodpeckers are expertly hand-colored in rich black with red crowns. Precise lines define and detail each feather adding dimension to their bodies. The woodpeckers are illustrated resting on a tree branch, one peering at a small bug.John Gould was an English ornithologist, self-taught artist and naturalist. Gould first worked as a gardener under his father in the Royal Gardens of Windsor from 1818-1824, where he began his illustrations. He became an expert taxidermist, opening his own practice in London in 1824 and in 1827 he became the first Curator and Preserver at the museum of the Zoological Society of London. Through his work he was able to meet with the country’s leading naturalists and view new collections of birds given to the Zoological Society. His interest in birds was continually developing and in 1830 he published his first volume on birds, “A Century of Birds From the Himalaya Mountains.” For the next fifty years, Gould, his wife and artists working with them traveled around Asia, the East Indies and Australia. His wife Elizabeth and other artists were able to transfer his sketches to stone; hand print and hand-color them. One of the most accomplished and engaging natural history works of the 19th century, “The Birds of Europe” was also the first of Gould's works to feature plates by Edward Lear. A total of sixty-eight images bear Lear's name, and they are among the most remarkable bird drawings ever made. Lear endowed his illustrations with some measure of his own whimsy and intelligence, and his style is at once fluidly spontaneous and realistically precise. In this way, the images of “The Birds of Europe” are amazingly distinctive, while also highly realistic. Gould undertook this work partly in an effort to redress the imbalance between the study of local and foreign ornithology. Gould portrayed birds native to Europe in a manner that had only been thought appropriate for the colorful species of distant places. In this way he managed to draw much popular interest back to native birds, which were suddenly considered equally beautiful to exotic species.

This splendid hand-colored, folio-size lithograph, Little Tern, Sterna minuta (Linn), from John Gould’s (1804-1881) monumental book "Birds Europe" (1832-1837) is in excellent condition. Measuring 14" x 21", this lithograph magnificently displays the author’s scientific skill and attention to detail. These seabirds are expertly hand-colored with white bodies and gray backs and wings and a black stripe and hood through the eye to the nape. Precise lines define and detail each feather and create the intricate patters on their backs. In the beginning of the 19th century the Little Tern was a common bird of European shores, rivers and wetlands. However in the 20th century, populations of coastal areas decreased because of habitat loss, pollution and human disturbance.John Gould was an English ornithologist, self-taught artist and naturalist. (Abbey Travel: 562) 1st edition.Godfrey Charles Mundy(1804-1860), soldier and author, was born on 10 March 1804, the eldest son of Major-General Godfrey Basil Mundy and Sarah Brydges, née Rodney, daughter of the first baron Rodney (1718-1792) who defeated the French Fleet under Comte de Grasse off Dominica in 1782. Mundy entered the army as an ensign in 1821, was commissioned lieutenant in 1823, captain 1826, major 1839, lieutenant-colonel 1845, and colonel 1854. In 1825-26 he was decorated while serving in India as aide-de-camp to Lord Combermere at the siege and storming of Bhurtpore. He was later stationed in Canada and arrived in Sydney from London in the Agincourt in June 1846 as deputy adjutant general of the military forces in Australia. He left in August 1851 and during the Crimean war was appointed under-secretary in the War Office. On 4 April 1857 he was appointed lieutenant-governor of Jersey in the Channel Islands with the local rank of major-general. He died in London on 10 July 1860 survived by his wife Louisa Katrina Herbert, whom he had married in Sydney on 6 June 1848, and by their son. In 1832 Mundy published Pen and Pencil Sketches, Being the Journal of a Tour in India, and in 1852 Our Antipodes: or, Residence and Rambles in the Australasian Colonies. With a Glimpse of the Gold Fields. He illustrated Our Antipodes with landscapes and lively scenes engraved from his own sketches. The first book went through three editions and the second four, not counting translations in German (1856) and Swedish (1857). In Australia Mundy accompanied his cousin Governor Sir Charles FitzRoy on several outback tours in New South Wales, and he visited Victoria, Van Diemen's Land and New Zealand. Aristocratic by birth and conventional in temper, he showed in his books a discerning eye, a lively pen, a keen sense of humour and a marked streak of sturdy common sense. Our Antipodes still makes entertaining reading and is an invaluable source of information for the Australian social historian.Condition:Recased with new spines, some foxing, previous owner's book plate on front pastedowns, corners bumped, glue stains to front pastedowns lacks plates opposite pages 72, 201, 206 and 241 else a very good set.

        Novae Hollandiae Plantarum specimen.

Paris, Huzard, 1804-1806. 2 volumes. Large-4to (325 x 255mm). pp. 112; 130, (1), with 265 engraved plates. New period style red half calf, richly gilt ornamented spines, marbled sides. The first general flora of Australia (southwestern Australia and Tasmania), based on plants collected by Labillardière on the expedition in search of "La Pérouse". The plates are after drawings by Turpin, P.J. Redouté, Piron, Poiteau, Sauvage, and the author. "It is the most exciting publication of illustrations of Australian plants since the first publication of Dampier's collection, a hundred years earlier. Containing 265 plates, it is extensive and exquisite. The uncoloured copper engravings, mostly by Auguste Plée and his son Victoire Plée... The combination of the engraver Plée, with artists Poiteau, Turpin and Redouté exemplifies great craftmanship in botanical illustration. Nevertheless some of the work is flat indicating that the drawings were taken from herbarium specimens; others have great depth and surely were taken from living material. The publication of the 'Novae....' resulted in a total of 370 Australian species described by that time according to an estimate by Dryander (Banks' librarian). Approximately three quarters of these plantes were illustrated by published plates, with many species being illustrated more than once. The impressive total, though, is largely due to the efforts of Labillardière. The associates of Labillardière and the artists contributing to the 'Novae...' represent a 'who is who' of botany and botanical illustration of contemporary France. Frans Stafleu describes the years 1790 to 1840 as the 'golden half-century of French botanical illustration'. Certainly, the French artists associated with the Australian plant material helped raise the lustre' (H. Hewson, Australia. 300 years of botanical illustration p. 58). 'Notwithstanding his rather difficult relations with Napoleon, Labillardiere evidently received some governmental support for his publication....'(Stafleu p. 37).//Jacques de Labillardière (1755-1834) was one of the great traveller-naturalists of the 18th century and is famous for his account of his voyage to the South Seas with Brun d'Entrecasteaux in search of La Pérouse in 1791-93. A beautifully bound copy.//Provenance: armorial bookplate of Domahidy and a library stamp on title pages as well as on last text leaves. //Stafleu & Cowan 4071; Nissen BBI, 1116.

Description de Valence, ou Tableau de cette Province, de ses productions, de ses habitans, de leurs moeurs, de leurs usages, etc. (.). Traducteur Ch. F. Cramer.

      - Paris, Henrichs, Ch. Fr. Cramer et Leipzic, Reclam, An XII-1804. Cf. longue analyse in: Boucher de La Richarderie, III, 483-499.         Rosa Semperflorens

Vienna, 1804. A stunning botanical print of a fairy rose, from Jacquin's seminal book on the royal garden at Schonbrunn. In 1752, the Dutch physician and botanist Gerard van Swieten, an old friend of Jacquin's father, invited the young Nikolaus, aged 25 at the time, to come and study in Vienna. Brought about by the recent bankruptcy of Jacquin Sr., this gesture of kindness bore immediate fruit, as the young man showed such great promise in his botanical studies that he attracted the interest of Franz I, Maria Theresa's husband, while working in the Schönbrunn gardens. The Emperor soon commissioned him to produce a systematic catalogue of the plants in the gardens, and in 1754, asked him to voyage to the West Indies to collect tropical plant specimens and live animals for the gardens at Schönbrunn and the royal menagerie. Under Jacquin's direction the garden at Schönbrunn became the most celebrated botanical garden of the time. This exquisite plate depicting the fairy rose, is from Jacquin's seminal text, Plantarum Rariorum Horti Caesarei Schönbrunnensis Descriptiones et Icones . Comprised of five hundred finely drawn botanical studies, the text provides an extensive catalogue of the various species growing in the Schönbrunn gardens. Dunthorne 156; Nissen BBI 978; Pritzel 4372; Stafleu & Cowan TL2 3255. Copper engraving with lovely early colour. Hightened with irridescence. Printed on laid paper. Plate 281. In perfect condition.
