- Edition originale, rare. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] original, unusual Edition. Binders in full sheepskin blond rooted contemporary. back smooth decorated with two irons and two boxes to the grotesque. parts of title in red morocco. In time, Huggins would become Duncan's father in law, through the marriage of his daughter, Bertha Huggins. The couple had six sons and one daughter, Berth(e)a.The influences of both Havell and Huggins undoubtedly led to Duncan's long and successful career as one of Britain's foremost marine watercolorists.

Weston (1747-1830) was a antiqurian and classical scholar who wrote some fifty books, including various editions of Persian poetry, commentaries on Shakespeare, and several studies of classical architecture; notably he produced the first English translation of the Rosetta Stone, presented verbally at a Society of Antiquaries meeting in 1802. As a young man he accompanied Sir Charles Warwick Bampfylde of Devon as his tutor on his tour of the continent. "As a result of this tour he conceived a passion for travel and a particular love for France and, especially, for Paris. He was in Paris during the revolution of 1791 and 1792, but thought it expedient to leave the city rather than take unnecessary risks ? He returned to Paris in 1802, and this visit too was celebrated by a publication, The Praise of Paris ? [which prompted] a contributor to the Gentleman's Magazine to write that although 'as an archaeologist he may have had something to learn, his little book is vividly written, and his descriptions as clean cut as a cameo'" (ODNB).

A Chronological History of the Discoveries in the South Sea or Pacific Ocean.

London: by Luke Hansard, and sold by G. and W. Nicol; G. and J. Robinson; J. Robson; T. Payne; and Cadell and Davies [vol. I; later imprints vary slightly],, 1803-17. 5 volumes, quarto (294 × 230 mm). Contemporary tree calf, neatly rebacked with original spines laid down, labels renewed to style, corners restored, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers and edges. Complete as issued with 22 engraved charts, of which 17 are folding (5 as frontispieces), and 13 engraved views, of which one is folding. Modern collector's bookplate in each volume. Some small areas of wear to bindings, minor spotting or browning internally, overall a very good set. First edition. "The most important general history of early South Seas discoveries, containing practically everything of importance on the subject; collected from all sources, with the most important remarks concerning them ? Many of the early voyages to California would be inaccessible were they not collected herein" (Hill). James Burney (1750?1821) had served on Cook's second and third voyages and witnessed Cook's killing. He reached the rank of captain, but his repeated acts of subordination and openly republican political views hampered his naval career. Forced into retirement on half pay, he followed the examples of his father, the historian of music Charles Burney, and his sister, the novelist Fanny Burney, by turning to writing. His first work was as ghost writer of William Bligh's A Voyage to the South Sea in HMS Bounty (1792). The present is his major work, describing the discoveries up to but not including Cook's, published in a format to be shelved next to those eight quartos. "This work, carefully researched and clearly and concisely written, long remained the standard on its subject. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1809" (ODNB).

Importante obra da época patrocinada por D. João VI (enquanto Principe do Brasil) com grande relevância científica e técnica de acordo com a extensa recensão crítica publicada na época in The Monthly Review, Literary Journal, enlarged: from September to December, inclusive. London. MDCCCVI [1806], Art. IX. (pags. 495-502): «Saggio Idrografico del Piemonte, i. e. An Essay on the Hydrography of Piedmont, by G. T. Michelotti, late Mathematical Professor in the University of Turin, dedicated to his Royal Highness the Prince of Brazil, Regent of Portugal, &c. 4to. pp. 126. Rome, I Fox. Ensayo Hydrographico, &c. The same work translated into Portuguese, by Father Francesco Furtado de Mendonça. 4to. Rome. The vast chains of mountains which extend themselves over the greater part of the late principality of Piedmont, and the neighboring districts of Dauphiné, Savoy, Le Valais, and Switzerland, give rise to numerous rivers and torrents, which, in their course to the Po, exhibit almost every variety of character that can interest the hydraulic engineer. The fall and consequent rapidity of these streams are in general very considerable, and offer to agriculture and manufactures the most important advantages, at little trouble or expense. [?] Many extensive works, projected by Michelotti and divers engineers, were actually carried into execution; and others not less important were suspended or interrupted by the events of the late disastrous war. The valuable mass of information on all these points, which the professional pursuits of the author of the work before us, and of his father and brother, had enabled them to collect, first suggested the idea of a full and correct description of the course and phaenomena of the rivers of Piedmont, and of the various uses to which their waters are and might be applied. A plan embracing such a wide field, and at the same time requiring such accuracy in the details, appeared, however, an object so important, and its completion by an individual seemed an undertaking so arduous, that the author resolved previously to try the sense of the public, by the present volume; which, under the modest title of an Essay, discloses the outline of the important work to which it is designed as a prelude. [?] The work commences with pointing out the sources of the rivers of Piedmont, under the different chains of mountains [?] which almost encircle the valley of the Po. After a few interesting observations on the principal phaenomena which these mountains present, the author proceeds to examine the nature and origin of the various substances which are carried down by the rivers.[?] Chapter IV contains reflections on some of the means of extending the advantages derived from the rivers of Piedmont; principally relating to the navigation of the Po and Tanaro, which appears in all seasons

[K257, arr ] Messe á 4 Voix avec accompagnement de 2 Violons et Basse, 2 Hautbois, 2 Trompettes, Timbales et Orgue No II Partition

Leipsic: Breitkopf et Härtel [without PN], 1803. First Edition. Haberkamp I, p. 111. Köchel 6, p. 268 (Credo erroneously described as lacking; as is the case with the Benedictus, it is only "verstümmelt" [mutilated]). Hoboken 12, 718. Hirsch IV, 988. RISM M7369. Part of Breitkopf & Härtel's early "complete" edition. The work is originally a "Credo mass," i.e., the word "credo" is repeated in various places of the creed, like a refrain. The church condemned this practice as unliturgical, banning the music from performance. In the present edition, the movement has been altered (partially cut, partially rewritten) to eliminate the repetitions of the word. The Benedictus has a major cut in the middle (four new measures replacing mm. 28-62). The annotation in ink refers to the page where the Benedictus is "mutilated.". Oblong folio. Original light green printed wrappers with titling, "Oeuvres de Mozart. Messe No. II en Partition." [1] (title), 2-74 pp. Typeset. Text in Latin and German (except Kyrie, which is in Greek only). Early annotation, "Nro 188 pag. 53." in ink to head of title; 2 circular ink stamps flanking "No. II" of title. Ex-libris the noted Viennese collector Professor Josef Zehtgruber (1935-2001), with his distinctive small decorative handstamp to upper right corner of title. Wrappers slightly worn; browned at edges; spined frayed, with minor loss. Slightly worn, browned, and foxed; light dampstaining to lower outer margin; occasional additional stains.

First edition of ?Zwei Praeludien durch alle Dur-Tonarten für Klavier oder Orgel? (Opus 39). ?These preludes date from Beethoven's teenage years in Bonn. They were not published until December 1803, when they were issued by Hoffmeister along with the Violin Romance opus 40 and the slightly questionable Serenade for Flute, opus 41. These publications of early works and a dubious transcription, apparently with Beethoven's approval, can probably be traced to a simple need for ready money.? [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

      - Wien, Camesianische Buchhandlung, 1803. 4to. (237 x 200mm). pp. xii, (4), 123, (1), with 24 handcoloured engraved plates. Later half vellum, spine with red gilt lettered label. Second edition of this very rare and early work on Foraminifera, the first edition of which was published 1798. It is especially valuable since Montfort designated in 1808 a large number of forms of Fichtel and Moll as the genotypes of many genera. These species were again discussed by Parker and Jones in 1860. A number of years ago the original collection of Fichtel and Moll, which was the basis of this book, was by chance rediscovered in the Museum of Natural History in Vienna. It may be stated that the authors gave, for that time, very accurate descriptions and illustrations of the treated species."The publication of Fichtel & Moll (1798) on 'Testacea microscopica' has been of large influence on the investigation of the protozoan group foraminifera. Description and figures of these small foraminifera are of high standard. Therefore it is believed, that Fichtel & Moll have used the most modern optical instruments, invented in the second half of the 18th century. Connected with the search for the authentity of the collection the biography of the authors became of interest. Johann Paul Carl von Moll, born 1735 in Oettingen (Bavaria) was involved later on in the work of the Naturalien Cabinet in Vienna, the forerunner of the Natural History Museum. He died in Vienna, 1812. His co-author Leopold von Fichtel, son of an enthusiastic naturalist Johann Ehrenreich von Fichtel, became famous for his collection of objects of nature. He was born 1770 in Hermannstadt (Sibiu, Rumania) and died in his young years 1810 in Vienna" (F. Rögl, L.v. Fichtel und J.P.C.v. Moll und ihre wissenschaftliche Bedeutung, Wien 1982). The plates are meticulously drawn and finely hand-coloured.Nissen ZBI, 1351. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Contemporary half calf, blind stamped and gilt spine, marbled sides (hinges skilfully repaired at a later date). The rare coloured issue with the often lacking third supplementary volume, which was issued five years later. George Montagu (1753-1815) was an English naturalist and is best known for his pioneering 'Ornithological Dictionary' of 1802. Montagu had an interest in marine and freshwater natural history, and in 1803 published his Testacea Britannica, a History of British Marine, Land and Freshwater Shells. This described 470 species of molluscs, 100 of which were new to the British list.         A collection of Prints from pictures painted for the purpose of illustrating the dramatic works of Shakespeare by the Artists of Great Britain

London: Shakespeare Gallery, 1803. Seven original engravings on paper. Vol.I, II. Each about 24" x 18 ˝ with engraved legends. With margins (some trimmed close to plate). Very good condition. These engravings are part of a magnificent series of 100 historical prints that illustrate the plays of Shakespeare. An historical print combines symbolic actions from a play then creates a tableau that intends to represents the scene. Each scene pictures a child or children from the plays. The origin of these majestic engravings grew from the publisher Alderman John Boydell who, in 1786, decided to publish ‘a fine edition of Shakespeare' that might rival the elegant volumes which the French were then producing of their national authors. John Boydell aspired to promote British artists and "establish an English school of historical painting," as he later wrote in his catalogue of The Shakespeare Gallery. The Boydell edition of Shakespeare in nine magnificent, folio volumes was finally finished in 1805. These much larger engravings were printed in a separate suite of 100 plates to be appreciated as art objects for their beauty. They were available for purchase individually from 1795 and, after 1805, complete in two volumes. According to the British Dictionary of National Biography (1886), "[The Boydell edition of Shakespeare] was the first great effort of the kind ever made by English artists, and its influence cannot easily be overestimated." Coriolanus Act V, iii 1803 After Gavin Hamilton, engraved by J. Caldwell. P&B II:29, p.270 Volumnia, Virgilia and young Marcius plead with Corlianus to spare Rome from destruction. Second Part of King Henry the Sixth. Act 1, iv. 1796 After John Opie, engraved by Charles Gauthier. P&B II:16, p258. “The duke yet lives that Henry shall dispose.” King John Act IV, I 1798 After James Northcote, engraved by Robert Thew P&B II,1, p. 244 A famous example of a scene based on historical principals. The innocent and sympathetically depicted young Arthur is about to be blinded by the executioner with coals on the orders of his uncle King John. Schmieder 2, pp. 366-73, 875. Bach Compendium III, C1-5, 9. Hirsch IV, 685. RISM B447.Slightly foxed. Some paper imperfections. With:Autograph organ part in Stolze's hand to Vol. 1 of the motets. 350 x 210 mm. Sewn. 6 leaves notated on 14 staves per page in black ink. Unpaginated. With caption title "Organo" with addition in red ink: "Motetto I Singet dem H. S[ebastian] B[ach]." Organo part notated primarily on one staff, with bass figures; passages marked "Chorale" notated on two staves. All three motets transposed down a whole tone. "Singet dem Herrn" and "Ich lasse dich nicht" with tempo marks ("Andante" for the chorale of "Singet dem Herrn" in red ink). The editor of both volumes (not credited) is Johann Gottfried Schicht (1753-1823), Kapellmeister at the Gewandhaus since 1785 and Thomaskantor from 1810. He modernized the texts; drastic imagery and references to Satan and hell are deleted. Like the autographs, the edition lacks a continuo part, leading to the misconception prevalent throughout the 19th and 20th centuries that the authentic performance practice was a cappella. The organ part by Stolze, included with the present copy, not only serves to document performance practice around 1800, but is also endowed with some authority as Stolze was a friend (and landlord) of J.S. Bach's last student, Johann Christian Kittel (1732-1809).The authorship of the motet BWV Anh. 159 has long been disputed. Part of the manuscript source is in Johann Sebastian Bach's hand, in a volume with motets by his uncle Johann Christoph Bach (1642-1703). It has traditionally been most often ascribed to Johann Christoph Bach but also to others, including Johann Michael Bach (1648-1694), as in the present copy). More recent scholarship is again discussing an authorship of Johann Sebastian. The final chorale, however, does nor occur in the source; it is a contrafactum of J.S. Bach's chorale BWV 421 and certainly spurious, most likely arranged and added by Johann Gottfried Schicht.Fritz Heitmann (1891-1953) was an organist in Berlin and an authority on Bach.
