      - Wien, Camesianische Buchhandlung, 1803. 4to. (237 x 200mm). pp. xii, (4), 123, (1), with 24 handcoloured engraved plates. Later half vellum, spine with red gilt lettered label. Second edition of this very rare and early work on Foraminifera, the first edition of which was published 1798. It is especially valuable since Montfort designated in 1808 a large number of forms of Fichtel and Moll as the genotypes of many genera. These species were again discussed by Parker and Jones in 1860. A number of years ago the original collection of Fichtel and Moll, which was the basis of this book, was by chance rediscovered in the Museum of Natural History in Vienna. It may be stated that the authors gave, for that time, very accurate descriptions and illustrations of the treated species."The publication of Fichtel & Moll (1798) on 'Testacea microscopica' has been of large influence on the investigation of the protozoan group foraminifera. Description and figures of these small foraminifera are of high standard. Therefore it is believed, that Fichtel & Moll have used the most modern optical instruments, invented in the second half of the 18th century. Connected with the search for the authentity of the collection the biography of the authors became of interest. Johann Paul Carl von Moll, born 1735 in Oettingen (Bavaria) was involved later on in the work of the Naturalien Cabinet in Vienna, the forerunner of the Natural History Museum. He died in Vienna, 1812. His co-author Leopold von Fichtel, son of an enthusiastic naturalist Johann Ehrenreich von Fichtel, became famous for his collection of objects of nature. He was born 1770 in Hermannstadt (Sibiu, Rumania) and died in his young years 1810 in Vienna" (F. Rögl, L.v. Fichtel und J.P.C.v. Moll und ihre wissenschaftliche Bedeutung, Wien 1982). The plates are meticulously drawn and finely hand-coloured.Nissen ZBI, 1351. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Testacea Britannica or Natural History of British Shells, marine, land, and fresh-water, including the most minute: systematically arranged and embellished with figures.

White, 1803-1808. 3 parts (including supplement) bound in one. 4to (265 x 210mm). pp. (2), xxxvii, (3), 1-291, (1); (2), 293-606, (4); (2), v, (1), 183, (1), with 3 engraved title-pages of which 2 hand-coloured, 2 hand-coloured engraved title-vignettes and 30 hand-coloured engraved plates. Contemporary half calf, blind stamped and gilt spine, marbled sides (hinges skilfully repaired at a later date). The rare coloured issue with the often lacking third supplementary volume, which was issued five years later. George Montagu (1753-1815) was an English naturalist and is best known for his pioneering 'Ornithological Dictionary' of 1802. Montagu had an interest in marine and freshwater natural history, and in 1803 published his Testacea Britannica, a History of British Marine, Land and Freshwater Shells. This described 470 species of molluscs, 100 of which were new to the British list. ". the coloured plates are of considerable beauty, and the book is a monument of careful study and enthusiasm" (DSB). A fine copy.Nissen ZBI, 2875. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A collection of Prints from pictures painted for the purpose of illustrating the dramatic works of Shakespeare by the Artists of Great Britain

London: Shakespeare Gallery, 1803. Seven original engravings on paper. Vol.I, II. Each about 24" x 18 ˝ with engraved legends. With margins (some trimmed close to plate). Very good condition. These engravings are part of a magnificent series of 100 historical prints that illustrate the plays of Shakespeare. An historical print combines symbolic actions from a play then creates a tableau that intends to represents the scene. Each scene pictures a child or children from the plays. The origin of these majestic engravings grew from the publisher Alderman John Boydell who, in 1786, decided to publish ‘a fine edition of Shakespeare' that might rival the elegant volumes which the French were then producing of their national authors. John Boydell aspired to promote British artists and "establish an English school of historical painting," as he later wrote in his catalogue of The Shakespeare Gallery. The Boydell edition of Shakespeare in nine magnificent, folio volumes was finally finished in 1805. These much larger engravings were printed in a separate suite of 100 plates to be appreciated as art objects for their beauty. They were available for purchase individually from 1795 and, after 1805, complete in two volumes. According to the British Dictionary of National Biography (1886), "[The Boydell edition of Shakespeare] was the first great effort of the kind ever made by English artists, and its influence cannot easily be overestimated." Coriolanus Act V, iii 1803 After Gavin Hamilton, engraved by J. Caldwell. P&B II:29, p.270 Volumnia, Virgilia and young Marcius plead with Corlianus to spare Rome from destruction. Second Part of King Henry the Sixth. Act 1, iv. 1796 After John Opie, engraved by Charles Gauthier. The innocent and sympathetically depicted young Arthur is about to be blinded by the executioner with coals on the orders of his uncle King John. With caption title "Organo" with addition in red ink: "Motetto I Singet dem H. S[ebastian] B[ach]." Organo part notated primarily on one staff, with bass figures; passages marked "Chorale" notated on two staves. All three motets transposed down a whole tone. "Singet dem Herrn" and "Ich lasse dich nicht" with tempo marks ("Andante" for the chorale of "Singet dem Herrn" in red ink). The editor of both volumes (not credited) is Johann Gottfried Schicht (1753-1823), Kapellmeister at the Gewandhaus since 1785 and Thomaskantor from 1810. He modernized the texts; drastic imagery and references to Satan and hell are deleted. Like the autographs, the edition lacks a continuo part, leading to the misconception prevalent throughout the 19th and 20th centuries that the authentic performance practice was a cappella. The organ part by Stolze, included with the present copy, not only serves to document performance practice around 1800, but is also endowed with some authority as Stolze was a friend (and landlord) of J.S. Bach's last student, Johann Christian Kittel (1732-1809).The authorship of the motet BWV Anh. 159 has long been disputed. Part of the manuscript source is in Johann Sebastian Bach's hand, in a volume with motets by his uncle Johann Christoph Bach (1642-1703). It has traditionally been most often ascribed to Johann Christoph Bach but also to others, including Johann Michael Bach (1648-1694), as in the present copy). More recent scholarship is again discussing an authorship of Johann Sebastian. The final chorale, however, does nor occur in the source; it is a contrafactum of J.S. Bach's chorale BWV 421 and certainly spurious, most likely arranged and added by Johann Gottfried Schicht.Fritz Heitmann (1891-1953) was an organist in Berlin and an authority on Bach.         [K257, arr.]. Messe á 4 Voix avec accompagnement de 2 Violons et Basse, 2 Hautbois, 2 Trompettes, Timbales et Orgue... No. II. Partition

Leipsic: Breitkopf et Härtel [without PN], 1803. First Edition. Haberkamp I, p. 111. Köchel 6, p. 268 (Credo erroneously described as lacking; as is the case with the Benedictus, it is only "verstümmelt" [mutilated]). Hoboken 12, 718. Hirsch IV, 988. RISM M7369. Part of Breitkopf & Härtel's early "complete" edition. The work is originally a "Credo mass," i.e., the word "credo" is repeated in various places of the creed, like a refrain. The church condemned this practice as unliturgical, banning the music from performance. In the present edition, the movement has been altered (partially cut, partially rewritten) to eliminate the repetitions of the word. The Benedictus has a major cut in the middle (four new measures replacing mm. 28-62). The annotation in ink refers to the page where the Benedictus is "mutilated.". Oblong folio. Original light green printed wrappers with titling, "Oeuvres de Mozart. Messe No. II en Partition." [1] (title), 2-74 pp. Typeset. Text in Latin and German (except Kyrie, which is in Greek only). Early annotation, "Nro 188 pag. 53." in ink to head of title; 2 circular ink stamps flanking "No. II" of title. Ex-libris the noted Viennese collector Professor Josef Zehtgruber (1935-2001), with his distinctive small decorative handstamp to upper right corner of title. Wrappers slightly worn; browned at edges; spined frayed, with minor loss. Slightly worn, browned, and foxed; light dampstaining to lower outer margin; occasional additional stains.

PARIS ET SES MODES, Ou Les Soirées Parisiennes.

Paris: chez Michelet; Ponthieu, 1803. chez Michelet; Ponthieu,: Paris:, An XI.- 1803. Paris: chez Michelet; Ponthieu, An XI.- 1803. First and evidently only edition. Curiously dedicated to " Monsieur LEROI." The anonymous author tells us that he won the manuscript of this work (based on communications to relatives in the provinces) in a game of piquet.Clothing fashion is not the emphasis here, but we do find the title in Colas 2280. The text touches briefly upon all of its topics, possibly reflecting the sense of rapid and unpredictable change in the period just before Napoleon becomes emperor. Mention is made of contemporary musical performances (at la rue de Cléry, at the Conservatoire); the state of gardens such as "Idalie" and "Elisée "(sic) just off the Champs Elysées; Tivoli, and Frascati. The author advises the reader on the current and correct usage of the words "artiste," "cordonnier and bottier," "perruquier et coéffeur". Fashionable merchants for fabrics, jewelry, glass and perfumes etc. are mentioned, tea salons, confiseries, and cafés noted. We learn that the term "marchands de meubles" has replaced "tapissier" among those in the know. Balls, the entertainments of Longchamps, and the theatre scene (with critical comment) are referenced and the point is made that the sentimental genre is now favored in novels. With a bookplate bearing the devise of the family Kergorlay, "Ayde Toy Kergorlay, Dieu T'Aydera". OCLC locates no copies in North America. There are 2 copies at the British Library in addition to copies in French collections. Very scarce. 12mo (16.4 x 10 cm); (ii, blank) + half title +engraved frontispiece with tissue guard + 10 - 214+ (ii) pp. Bound in 19th century quarter leather, spine gilt ruled with gilt devices and gilt title, spine edges rubbed, very tiny chip at head of spine; marbled boards scuffed in places, very mild shelf wear at extremities; marbled endpapers with bookplate on front paste-down; half-title re-attached, text block bound tightly; faint and infrequent spotting or foxing. A well preserved and attractive copy with a few pages showing faint damping trace at margin edges only and some irregularity of edges, not affecting text.

The PRESERVATION Of CHARLES And ISABELLA, or The Force of Friendship

Printed for B. Crosby and Co., et al., London 1803 - 36 pp. Frontispiece [Cruikshank del Lundin Sculp]. 12mo: O^6 - Q^6. 7-1/8" x 4-1/8" A work of juvenile fiction (set in Lisbon during the great earthquake) by an author better known for his satirical works. Very scarce: OCLC locates only four copies worldwide (Oxford, Princeton, Indiana, NY Public Library). From the library of Sir David Salomons, Bart., Broomhill, Tunbridge Wells. This could be either the 1st or 2nd Baronet, both of the same name. The first Sir David Salomons (1797-1873) was a banker, Member of Parliament, and the first Jewish Sheriff and Lord Mayor of London. His nephew and heir, the second Sir David Salomons, later Goldsmid-Stern Salomons (1851-1925), is the more likely candidate, as he was a noted collector of Cruikshankiana and illustrated books whose impressive collection was sold at auction in 1930 (see Rare & Valuable Colored Plate Books & An Extensive Cruikshank Collection from the Library of the late Sir David Lionel Goldsmid-Stern Salomons, Bart., Anderson Galleries, 1930). Broomhill, the country house of both baronets, is now the Salomons Museum.Tipped onto the front free-endpaper is a clipped catalogue description of the book, presumably from the 1930 sale, which attributes the frontispiece to George Cruikshank, but it seems far more likely to have been by his father, Isaac Cruikshank, as George would have been only eleven years old at the time of the book's publication. Modest extremity wear. Armorial bookplate to front paste-down. Withal, a VG+ copy. Later full calf binding by Bumpus. TEG. Marbled eps. Plain grey paper wrappers bound-in at rear 1st Edition (Gumuchian 1876). Not in Marchmont. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
