Mich Bach" to caption title of same motet (p. 41); in both instances "Mich" crossed out and replaced with "Christ." in pencil. Dynamics added in pencil to "Ich lasse dich nicht" (Vol. 1, pp. 41-48). Schmieder 2, pp. 366-73, 875. Bach Compendium III, C1-5, 9. Hirsch IV, 685. RISM B447.Slightly foxed. Some paper imperfections. With:Autograph organ part in Stolze's hand to Vol. 1 of the motets. 350 x 210 mm. Sewn. 6 leaves notated on 14 staves per page in black ink. Unpaginated. With caption title "Organo" with addition in red ink: "Motetto I Singet dem H. S[ebastian] B[ach]." Organo part notated primarily on one staff, with bass figures; passages marked "Chorale" notated on two staves. All three motets transposed down a whole tone. "Singet dem Herrn" and "Ich lasse dich nicht" with tempo marks ("Andante" for the chorale of "Singet dem Herrn" in red ink). The editor of both volumes (not credited) is Johann Gottfried Schicht (1753-1823), Kapellmeister at the Gewandhaus since 1785 and Thomaskantor from 1810. He modernized the texts; drastic imagery and references to Satan and hell are deleted. Like the autographs, the edition lacks a continuo part, leading to the misconception prevalent throughout the 19th and 20th centuries that the authentic performance practice was a cappella. The organ part by Stolze, included with the present copy, not only serves to document performance practice around 1800, but is also endowed with some authority as Stolze was a friend (and landlord) of J.S. Bach's last student, Johann Christian Kittel (1732-1809).The authorship of the motet BWV Anh. 159 has long been disputed. Part of the manuscript source is in Johann Sebastian Bach's hand, in a volume with motets by his uncle Johann Christoph Bach (1642-1703). It has traditionally been most often ascribed to Johann Christoph Bach but also to others, including Johann Michael Bach (1648-1694), as in the present copy). More recent scholarship is again discussing an authorship of Johann Sebastian. The final chorale, however, does nor occur in the source; it is a contrafactum of J.S. Bach's chorale BWV 421 and certainly spurious, most likely arranged and added by Johann Gottfried Schicht.Fritz Heitmann (1891-1953) was an organist in Berlin and an authority on Bach.         PARIS ET SES MODES, Ou Les Soirées Parisiennes.

Paris: chez Michelet; Ponthieu, 1803. chez Michelet; Ponthieu,: Paris:, An XI.- 1803. Paris: chez Michelet; Ponthieu, An XI.- 1803. First and evidently only edition. Curiously dedicated to " Monsieur LEROI." The anonymous author tells us that he won the manuscript of this work (based on communications to relatives in the provinces) in a game of piquet.Clothing fashion is not the emphasis here, but we do find the title in Colas 2280. The text touches briefly upon all of its topics, possibly reflecting the sense of rapid and unpredictable change in the period just before Napoleon becomes emperor. Mention is made of contemporary musical performances (at la rue de Cléry, at the Conservatoire); the state of gardens such as "Idalie" and "Elisée "(sic) just off the Champs Elysées; Tivoli, and Frascati. The author advises the reader on the current and correct usage of the words "artiste," "cordonnier and bottier," "perruquier et coéffeur". Fashionable merchants for fabrics, jewelry, glass and perfumes etc. are mentioned, tea salons, confiseries, and cafés noted. We learn that the term "marchands de meubles" has replaced "tapissier" among those in the know. Balls, the entertainments of Longchamps, and the theatre scene (with critical comment) are referenced and the point is made that the sentimental genre is now favored in novels. With a bookplate bearing the devise of the family Kergorlay, "Ayde Toy Kergorlay, Dieu T'Aydera". OCLC locates no copies in North America. There are 2 copies at the British Library in addition to copies in French collections. Very scarce. 12mo (16.4 x 10 cm); (ii, blank) + half title +engraved frontispiece with tissue guard + 10 - 214+ (ii) pp. Bound in 19th century quarter leather, spine gilt ruled with gilt devices and gilt title, spine edges rubbed, very tiny chip at head of spine; marbled boards scuffed in places, very mild shelf wear at extremities; marbled endpapers with bookplate on front paste-down; half-title re-attached, text block bound tightly; faint and infrequent spotting or foxing. A well preserved and attractive copy with a few pages showing faint damping trace at margin edges only and some irregularity of edges, not affecting text.

The PRESERVATION Of CHARLES And ISABELLA, or The Force of Friendship

Printed for B. Crosby and Co., et al., London 1803 - 36 pp. Frontispiece [Cruikshank del Lundin Sculp]. 12mo: O^6 - Q^6. 7-1/8" x 4-1/8" A work of juvenile fiction (set in Lisbon during the great earthquake) by an author better known for his satirical works. Very scarce: OCLC locates only four copies worldwide (Oxford, Princeton, Indiana, NY Public Library). From the library of Sir David Salomons, Bart., Broomhill, Tunbridge Wells. This could be either the 1st or 2nd Baronet, both of the same name. The first Sir David Salomons (1797-1873) was a banker, Member of Parliament, and the first Jewish Sheriff and Lord Mayor of London. His nephew and heir, the second Sir David Salomons, later Goldsmid-Stern Salomons (1851-1925), is the more likely candidate, as he was a noted collector of Cruikshankiana and illustrated books whose impressive collection was sold at auction in 1930 (see Rare & Valuable Colored Plate Books & An Extensive Cruikshank Collection from the Library of the late Sir David Lionel Goldsmid-Stern Salomons, Bart., Anderson Galleries, 1930). Broomhill, the country house of both baronets, is now the Salomons Museum.Tipped onto the front free-endpaper is a clipped catalogue description of the book, presumably from the 1930 sale, which attributes the frontispiece to George Cruikshank, but it seems far more likely to have been by his father, Isaac Cruikshank, as George would have been only eleven years old at the time of the book's publication. Modest extremity wear. Armorial bookplate to front paste-down. Withal, a VG+ copy. Later full calf binding by Bumpus. TEG. Marbled eps. Plain grey paper wrappers bound-in at rear 1st Edition (Gumuchian 1876). Not in Marchmont. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

"Aldini added notes and a commentary to the second édition of Galvani's important De viribus electricitatis in motu musculari (1792). An ardent partisan of his uncle's cause, he followed this supplement with De animale electricitate, dissertatione duae (1794)" (DSB, I, p. 107). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

History of the insurrection of the County of Wexford, A.D. 1798; including an account of transactions preceding that event, with an appendix.

Dublin: Printed for the author, by John Stockdale 8vo. [4] ff., xliv, 304, xxxvi, [2], 20 pp., fold. map, fold. table.. 1803 Hay (1761?–1826) of County Wexford, Ireland, was the brother of John Hay, one of the leaders of the 1798 United Irishmen Rebellion against English rule, and an eye-witness to the events. This first edition contains an introduction that is not found in all of the reprints and some of the later editions also lack either the folding map and/or the appendix. The folding table is the "Enumeration plan" (for enumerating the population of Ireland). The appendix (20 pages with its own signatures) is entitled "Authentic detail of the extravagant and inconsistent conduct of Sir Richard Musgrave, baronet; with a full refutation of his slander against 'Edward Hay'." Musgrave was an Irish Protestant from Waterford, a polemicist, and ardent anti-Catholic. Provenance: 20th-century signature of Francis Massey O'Brien and his bookplates (Portland, Maine), bibliophile and bookseller. Publisher's half brown calf with blue-green paper boards. Front joint open; binding scuffed. Map with repair from rear. Scattered foxing.

Kinsky-Halm p. 96. First edition of "Zwei Praeludien durch alle Dur-Tonarten für Klavier oder Orgel" (Opus 39). "These preludes date from Beethoven's teenage years in Bonn. They were not published until December 1803, when they were issued by Hoffmeister along with the Violin Romance opus 40 and the slightly questionable Serenade for Flute, opus 41. These publications of early works and a dubious transcription, apparently with Beethoven's approval, can probably be traced to a simple need for ready money."

Rhapsodieen (!)

Paris: Demonville et Soeurs. an XI - 1803. "First edition, 8vo, pp. 10, [errata leaf], 480; engraved frontispiece portrait and 2 engraved plates showing genital tumors associated with elephantiasis; contemporary and probably original quarter brown morocco and red pastepaper covered boards, rebacked, retaining original pastedowns and flyleaves and with black morocco label lettered in gilt on spine; negligible wear to extremities, light scattered foxing to prelims and end matter, the fore edge of the frontispiece curling, and the lower fore corner of pp. 407-408 torn away, affecting a few words; a very good copy inscribed by the author. On the half-title, Larrey has penned seven lines to an unidentified Lieutenant General; portions of the message have been damaged by a binder's over-zealous trimming and some light water spotting. ""Larrey was the greatest military surgeon in history. Of him Napoleon said: 'C'est l'home le plus verteux que j'ai connu.' ÉLarrey was one of the first to amputate at the hip-joint, the first to describe the therapeutic effect of maggots on wounds, gave the first description of 'trench foot,' Éand devised several new operations"" (GM 2160, in describing Larrey's Mémoires de chirurgie militaire of 1812-17)."

Historically important, two days after he took command of the H.M.S. Victory, Nelson writes on the ship's crew as Great Britain went to war against Napoleon: " I look to the captaining". The letter was previously sold about 100 years ago and includes that documentation.

n.p., May 20, 1803. 9" x 7.25". "Autograph Letter Signed, ""Nelson & Bronte,"" 2 pages, 9"" x 7.25"", [aboard the Victory at Spithead], May 20, 1803 to John McArthur, secretary to Admiral Samuel Hood, and onetime purser aboard the Victory, and Nelson's first biographer, soothing his friend's injured feelings and discussing personnel issues aboard the H.M.S. Victory. Expected folds, mild dampstain toward left margin, expertly laid in to a larger sheet, else very good condition. An unpublished letter, written just as he was departing England aboard the H.M.S. Victory. Nelson writes, in most part: “I did not expect such a letter after all my attentions to your wishes, but never mind. I do not deserve any reproach from any man I hope. I wrote you first that any arrangement you made was perfectly agreeable to me. Mr. Aldrige came in the way and as he had been used to the Vict[or]y. I considered it the same thing to you, and so I still think. The new Purser of the Victory you know must be indifferent to me. I look to the captaining and I have repeatedly said to you that I could not have the least objection to your going in her. I think Capt. [Samuel] Sutton will get into a serious scrape with the Admiralty for giving you leave of absence. I understand she is very deficient till[?] Capt. Sutton judged himself for you, your recommendation shall be attended to. I never showed you any inattention and therefore little expected so unkind a letter, but I am still the same towards you…”Nelson adds, in a postscript: ""I have influence with the Ad[miralt]y to get you or any man a first rate. I at this moment am soliciting for the removal of a namesake[?] from Purser of a Sloop to a frigate. I have no more paper[.] My kindest regards to Lord Hood I will write him as I go down channel.""Although he had taken command of the H.M.S. Victory as the flagship of the Mediterranean fleet, the ship was not yet ready to sail. Instead, Nelson transferred to the frigate H.M.S. Amphion on May 23. The Victory, commanded by Captain Sutton, rejoined the Mediterranean fleet on July 31 and Nelson raised his flag over the ship once more. The recipient, John McArthur (1755-1840) was a longtime naval officer, beginning his career in 1778 as an assistant clerk aboard the H.M.S. Eagle. In 1790, he developed a new set of code signals for the navy which brought him to the attention of Lord Hood, then serving as First Sea Lord, and made McArthur his personal secretary. When Hood became commander of naval forces in the Mediterranean, McArthur went aboard the Victory serving as his secretary and purser for the ship. He returned to England in 1796 and continued in his work for Lord Hood. McArthur came to the attention of Nelson through his role as a prize-agent. When Nelson took command of the Victory, he invited McArthur to join him as his secretary. Citing an ongoing audit of Lord Hood's accounts by the treasury, McArthur declined, thought the real reason likely lay in his growing involvement in literary matters. He had already published A Treatise on the Principles and Practice of Naval Courts-Martial in 1792, and in 1809 he would write, with James Stanier Clark, the first authoritative biography of Nelson. The present letter raises new questions about the relationship between McArthur and Nelson and the nature of his original invitation to serve aboard the Victory as it appears that McArthur had written some unkind words to admiral. At present we have been unable to locate McArthur's letter to Nelson. Provenance: Anderson Galleries, New York, March 26, 1917, lot 367."

ÉLarrey was one of the first to amputate at the hip-joint, the first to describe the therapeutic effect of maggots on wounds, gave the first description of 'trench foot,' Éand devised several new operations" (GM 2160, in describing Larrey's Mémoires de chirurgie militaire of 1812-17).
