Sammelband of 5 works of "ANA"]. Angotiana. BOUND WITH: Facetiana. BOUND WITH: Rousseliana. BOUND WITH: Carnavaliana et Caremiana. BOUND WITH: Paysaniana

Barba, Delaunay, Cavanagh, Les Marchands de Nouveautes, & Tiger 1803-1824, Paris - 16mo., together 5 works in one volume: 144 pp + 179 pp + 160 pp +122 pp + 108 pp., each work accompanied by an engraved frontispiece of which 2 are hand-colored (some fraying along outer edges). Bound in contemporary French half basane over marbled boards, a little worn but suitable for exhibition and study. Highly curious Sammelband of five "Ana," an important genre of late-18th and early 19th century French literature, today little known and under-appreciated by academics. At that time, EVERYONE read Ana, even the critics who excoriated these fugitive pieces of literary ephemera while secretly delighting in their unabashed "bad taste." Concerning Ana, Mornet correctly states: "One misunderstands the history of French thought in the 18th-century if one confines it to the history of strictly literary genres [.] In the provinces especially, far from the theater, the opera, and the fashionable salons, when one ceases to be ignorant and indifferent." Mornet judges that the genre of Ana is particularly responsible for assembling useless fragments of knowledge without a greater plan. He qualifies Ana as "crumbs of science," "empty and puerile curiosities," "and chatter." Modern academics ignore Ana at their peril. Once ubiquitous, many of them are now very scarce as they were read and reread by audiences all over French and soon discarded. Ana serve to inform us about French language and culture (high and low) in the broadest possible way. A very balanced account of the history and significance of Ana is given by Jennifer Tsein, The Bad Taste of Others: Judging Literary Value in Eighteenth-Century France (2012) pp. 173-174, with references to Daniel Mornet's Histoire De La Clarte Francaise (1929).

A general history of the Christian church, to the fall of the Western Empire ...the second edition improved.

Second edition, following the first of 1790: Corrected and expanded version of this scholarly history by Priestley, a controversial theologian as well as a chemist who may be best remembered today for experiments with gasses that led to the discovery of oxygen. Covering the early development of Christianity, the two volumes also address some contemporaneous events in Judaism and among various heathen groups. The work was printed in Northumberland, Pennsylvania, where Priestley settled in 1782, when his liberal political opinions and defense of the French Revolution (in addition to his status as a nonconforming minister of questionable orthodoxy) obliged him to emigrate from England to the United States. Provenance: Both title-pages inscribed by N. Irwin.

An Account of a Voyage to New South Wales.

London: M. Jones, 1803. Octavo, complete with portrait frontispiece, 11 hand-coloured plates (including title-page with vignette), and a hand-coloured folding map, untrimmed; crushed blue half morocco gilt by Bayntun. A beautifully illustrated account of New South Wales said to have been authored by the gentleman pickpocket George Barrington. The account is enhanced by a charming series of hand-coloured plates, which are an important series of "views" of the voyage out and the early settlement.Barrington, as is now well-attested, was most certainly not the author of this or any of the other books published in his name, but was co-opted by the London press as the apparent author of works which were actually plagiarised from the expensive First Fleet quartos. In fact, the original source for Barrington's Voyage was John Hunter's Historical Journal of the Transactions at Port Jackson and Norfolk Island (1793). In turn, Barrington's Voyage, first published in 1795, was expanded into this much improved edition after "incorporating a great deal of additional material plagiarised from the first volume of David Collins' Account of the English Colony in New South Wales (1798)" (Garvey). Amongst much of interest, this edition adds a letter said to have been written by Barrington in Parramatta in 1802.Transported to New South Wales on the Third Fleet of 1791, Barrington was already a legendary hero in England. The English public's continuing interest in New South Wales and the fate of the transported convicts encouraged the publishers' greed: they compiled information from various sources more official sources to make these cheaper and thus more widely read accounts. It is quite reasonable to suggest that the little most people in Great Britain knew about New South Wales derived chiefly from one or another of the Barrington books. The book was issued at the same time and by the same publisher as the History of New South Wales (see previous), and collectors have often bound the two works to style, as here. An attractive copy.

Cap. LVI. An Act for regulating the Vessels carrying Passengers from the United Kingdom to His Majesty's Plantations and Settlements Abroad or to Foreign Parts, with respect to the Number of such Passengers.

Edinburgh: printed by Sir D. Hunter Blair & J. Bruce, 1803. Folio, pp. [1]-14, disbound. One of the most important amendments to the laws of Transportation, formalising the requirement for convict vessels to carry a Surgeon, and thus directly responsible for a huge improvement in mortality rates. The Act is also interesting for noting some of the abuses rampant aboard convict transports and other passenger vessels travelling from Britain. The First Fleet had been provisioned by the Admiralty itself, and the Surgeons on board, led by John White, had an excellent record. From the Second Fleet onwards the task was contracted to private companies, infamously derelict on the Second Fleet itself, and with wildly varying results over the ensuing decade. On several occasions officers colluded to deny the convicts their correct rations so the surplus could be sold upon arrival at Port Jackson for a handsome profit. A plan to return convicts to naval vessels was scuppered by the ongoing conflict with France. This Act regulated the terms of carrying all passengers, free or convict, detailing acceptable provisioning and the role of the Surgeon, and allowing for a bond of £50 per head to be paid by the owners of any vessel. Although abuses continued aboard the convict transports conditions did improve overall, and the casualty rate for convicts sent to New South Wales fell from one in ten between 1795 and 1801 to one in forty-six for the period 1802-1812. One curious result was that British conservatives started to criticise the transports as being too comfortable and therefore a poor deterrent to crime. Disbound from stab-sewn binding, some browning, marginal paper repair to first leaf but overall sound condition.

First Edition, illustrated with 11 plates including 7 folding (anatomy, hermaphrodite sex, Hottentot ...). Full Sheepskin rooted contemporary. Smooth back decorated with boxes to the grotesque. Part of title and volume number in morocco beige. Roulette cold-framing on the boards. Upper joint split head of Volume I, and lower tail and head. A lack of volume III head. Pretty good copy costs. Without prejudice to the time, and judging things essentially naturalistic, finding and bringing the facts to his knowledge, this story of the woman, not only throughout history but in the nations (the hotentots are often studied) is fascinating in more ways than one, especially because the author never falls into a pure naturalism but still questioned the report of a fact to all components of the feminine, as social components, clothing, cultural and traditional and physical. The health treaty forming the third volume is a physiological Treaty Moreau analyzing the consequences of this behavior on physiology, sensitivity and female characteristics. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.         The Works of Francis Bacon... in Ten Volumes.

London: J. Johnson et al. 1803. Ten volumes, octavo, engraved portrait frontispiece and folding table, prize-plate & bookplate, later gift inscription from Buxton to his son; early diced calf with the insignia of Trinity College Dublin to the boards. A fine and most attractive set in original calf, presented as a school prize in 1806 to Thomas Fowell Buxton, the social reformer (and with his own engraved bookplate and later presentation inscription). The set has a school prize plate from its original presentation to Buxton for his progress in the Third Class of Trinity College, Dublin, which he attended from 1803 to 1807. It would be interesting to know whether the works of Bacon had any direct influence on Buxton's career, but he evidently cared for the set as he presented it to his eldest son and the Second Baronet, Edward North Buxton and his wife Catherine, on 12 December 1836.

Paris: Didot, 1803. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo (203x123 mm). 2 volumes, viii, 543 pp.; 555 [1] pp., including half titles. Old library stamps to half titles. Contemporary half leather over marbled boards, spine gilt (hinges repaired), some browning and spotting to pages, marbled endpapers. ----Norman 221 - FIRST EDITION. Trained as a physician, the French chemist Berthollet attempted to provide a proper basis for chemistry, so that its experimental results could be viewed in the light of theoretical first principles. In his attempt to provide chemistry with an adequate theoretical foundation, Berthollet recognized the importance of the theory of affinity. According to the Essai, there were two main types of force in nature: gravitation, which accounted for astronomical phenomena, and chemical affinity. He proved that Chemical affinity was relative, varying with the physical conditions accompanying a chemical experiment: quantity, temperature, solubility, pressure, and physical state. Berthollet 'introduced the highly important concept of 'chemical mass'-relative affinity combined with the mass of reactants in a chemical combination-to give the total force with which a given quantity of a substance reacted with another' (Norman).

A supplement to the account of the Pelew Islands... ; compiled from the journals of the Panther and the Endeavour, two vessels sent by the Honourable East India Company to those islands in the year 1790; and from the oral communications of Captain H. Wilson.

London: printed for Captain Henry Wilson, 1803. Quarto, with five engraved plates, uncut, copy in recent half calf by Bayntun-Riviere, Very scarce work on the Palau Islands (originally known as the Pelew Islands). The work is known for its handsome engravings after sketches by Captain Henry Wilson himself. Ferguson notes that the ninth chapter describes the visit of the vessels to New Guinea and the death of Surgeon Nicholson, before touching the coast of New Holland en route to Timor. This was written as a companion piece to George Keate's much reprinted Account of the Pelew Islands. It originally appeared as a supplement to the fifth edition, but a few copies are known to have been available separately for owners of the earlier editions to bind or shelve together. As the Hill catalogue notes, 'separately issued copies of Hockin in contemporary bindings are extraordinarily rare'.The Supplement contains narratives of the activities of the Panther and the Endeavour, East India Company ships which spent over a year in the Palau Islands, and surveyed the coasts of New Guinea and China. The two ships had been sent to the region to convey the sad news of the death of Prince Lee Boo to his father Abba Thule, King of the Palau Islands. To palliate the news, the ships also carried gifts of cattle and produce, and the voyage not only established friendly relationships with the inhabitants, but was engaged in teaching them the rudiments of Western agriculture. Importantly, this work also includes a valuable "Vocabulary of the Pelew Language".The Reverend Hockin, like Keate before him, was employed to edit and improve the original manuscripts. Some toning, a small tear to the front board, a very handsome copy.

Cels.

Paris: de l'Imprimerie de Crapelet, [Revolutionary Year VIII], 1800-1803. Folio, 100 engraved plates each with descriptive letterpress sheet; complete with the half-title; a large copy, edges uncut, in contemporary green quarter morocco gilt. One of the most elegant botanical books, this study of "new and little known" plants in the gardens of Jacques Martin Cels was the first of the three major works on exotic plants by the great Ventenat, and a superb example of this golden age of botanical illustration. The work includes plates by the great botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redouté, as well as Cloquet, Laneau, Maréchal and Sauvage. Ventenat's work represents the apogee of the French fascination with exotic botany, and this study is a monument to the work of Cels, botanist and adviser to the Empress Josephine. Cels began what would become a successful scientific and commercial venture by cultivating such plants in his famous garden at Montrouge, south of Paris. The French interest in plants from the farthest reaches of the known world is confirmed by the fact that no fewer than ten Australian plants are included here, of which seven were drawn by Redouté himself.Of the ten Australian plants represented, five are given their first scientific notice. These Australian plants were grown from cuttings by Cels, who notes that all of them had to winter in the Orangerie. Included are the Mimosa distachya, discovered by Felix la Haye on the east coast of New Holland during the 1792 visit of the D'Entrecasteaux voyage, as well as the Mimosa linifolia and the Melaleuca Hypericifolia (a full listing of the Australian plants is available on request). This was the first great work Cels made in conjunction with Pierre Ventenat (1757-1808), botanist to Josephine, Lycée professor in charge of the Pantheon library and a member of L'Institut de France. Together with Redouté, the third of Josephine's botanical advisers, all three men went on to work together on a successor work, the Choix des Plantes (published between 1803 and 1808), as well as completing the third significant title in this impromptu series, the Jardin de la Malmaison, cataloguing Josephine's own magnificent collection, which also included many specimens from around the world, including some sent to her by Banks, Napoleon in Egypt, Baudin in Australia, and Alexander von Humboldt in South America. This book includes a fascinating two-page note by Cels detailing his background, and noting some of the correspondents that helped him in his endeavours, including officers who sailed with d'Entrecasteaux and Baudin, but also English savants such as Sir Joseph Banks and William Aiton. Some light foxing, a few bumps to binding, but a most attractive uncut copy.

(Planche 12).

Didot. Original print folio untrimmed extracted Travellers in Lower and Upper Egypt Vivant Denon.Planche fold composed of a view as described by the author: Battle of the Pyramids. This table shows the moment of the double action, where two body Mamluks each made an exit; one of the divisions Dugua, Desaix and Reynier, the other on the battalion commanded by General Rampon (see in the newspaper account of the battle, Volume 1, page 76). I tried to give the image of a charge of Mamluks, which I was witness several times, and whose speed, abandonment, dedication, bravery and chivalry, have always struck me; I wanted to make it as a result of shrapnel on the cavalry, who came to defy the muzzle; I did see the servants walking through the fighters, their manner of carrying the wounded, of them away from the fight; camels bearing cartridges and warlike instruments; palm trees with their fruits, as they were at that time, and until the cracking produced by flooding and heat of the sun; and everything that characterizes the country, and contributes to giving it a peculiar physiognomy. The bottom contains everything the vast horizon offers interesting: the right of the print, is the road to Suez and Asia, where we see the Ibrahim Bey body; Cairo city, at the foot of the Mokattam, or the tip of the Arabian chain; the great aqueduct, which happens to the old Cairo on the edge of the river Boulac: foremost, the Nile, with the Islands of Raoudah, Boulac, and Lazaretto; the flagship of the fleet of Murat Bey, which he set fire during the battle: the other side of the Nile, Djyzeh, home of Murad Bey, the plain and the pyramids Ssackarah; the space between them and those of Djyzeh, which is the location qu'occupoit Memphis; and last line, Mont Libyan, whose chain lies from south to north to the Pyramids Djyzeh, and hence, changing everything at once direction to the west, it is lost in the desert Barca.Rousseurs of some folds, two tiny marginal restorations using pieces Filmoplast, otherwise good condition. Published for the first time in two volumes, an atlas of engravings, Didot, in 1802, the 'Journey to the Lower and Upper Egypt proved so successful that it was translated in 1803 into English and German, and a few years later in Dutch and Italian, among others. Almost all boards are designed by Denon, who also engraved himself a few, including portraits of the inhabitants of Egypt, who still kept the freshness of sketches taken on the spot (our 104-111 ). Two dozen writers have also collaborated to create etchings which Baltard, Galen, Reville and autres.Dominique Vivant Denon Baron says Vivant Denon, born in Givry January 4, 1747 and died in Paris on April 27 1825 is a writer, author, diplomat and French administrator. At the invitation of Bonaparte, he joined the expedition to Egypt in shipping from May 14, 1798 on the frigate "La Juno." Protected by French troops, he had the opportunity to travel the country in all directions in order to gather the material that was the basis for his artistic work and the most important literary. It supports in particular General Desaix in Upper Egypt, which he refers to numerous sketches, ink wash and other drawings in pen, black chalk, or chalk. He draws constantly, usually on his knee, standing or on horseback, and sometimes even under enemy fire. After a journey of 13 months during which he draws thousands of drawings, Vivant Denon returned to France with Bonaparte, and became the first artist to publish the story of the expedition. The 141 boards that accompany his diary retrace its entire journey from the coast of Corsica to the pharaonic monuments of Upper Egypt. Bonaparte then appointed Director General of the Central Museum of the Republic, which became the Napoleon Museum and the Royal Louvre and arts administrator. In 1805, Vivant Denon revival project of the Vendome column, which had been suspended in 1803 then organizes expeditions across Europe to raise imperial works of art which are plundered to be carried away to the Louvre. In 1814, Louis XVIII confirmed as head of the Louvre, one wing of which still bears his name today. It is considered a great precursor of museology, art history and Egyptology. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.       Paris: Barba, Delaunay, Cavanagh, Les Marchands de Nouveautes, & Tiger, 1803-1824. VERY GOOD. 16mo., together 5 works in one volume: 144 pp + 179 pp + 160 pp +122 pp + 108 pp., each work accompanied by an engraved frontispiece of which 2 are hand-colored (some fraying along outer edges). Bound in contemporary French half basane over marbled boards, a little worn but suitable for exhibition and study. Highly curious Sammelband of five "Ana," an important genre of late-18th and early 19th century French literature, today little known and under-appreciated by academics. At that time, EVERYONE read Ana, even the critics who excoriated these fugitive pieces of literary ephemera while secretly delighting in their unabashed "bad taste." Concerning Ana, Mornet correctly states: "One misunderstands the history of French thought in the 18th-century if one confines it to the history of strictly literary genres [...] In the provinces especially, far from the theater, the opera, and the fashionable salons, when one ceases to be ignorant and indifferent." Mornet judges that the genre of Ana is particularly responsible for assembling useless fragments of knowledge without a greater plan. Manuscripts [spine title]

-08 1803 - approx. 200 pages, with many blank leaves and other manuscript materials, 8vo, contemporary tree calf, red lettering piece on spine, small oval numbering piece ('1'), and black lettering piece at foot 'Griff. Lambell', rather rubbed. A slip of paper loosely inserted, probably early 20th century, proclaims 'Manuscript material on Joanna Southcott's Prophecies, &c. Copied from original letters, etc. by Griffith Lambell, 1803-1808, and Lambell, whose hand is small and neat, has subscribed his name to the text in at least one place. He often specifies whose original he has copied. Not all of the entries are letters or statements by Southcott herself. There is 'Mrs. Fields seven days Journal during the time of Joanna Southcott's illness in Paddington' in September 1802, and 'A List of the Judges and Jurymen who Proved Joanna's Writings, January 12th 1803.' In a copy of the old DNB entry for Southcott (1750–1814), which is loosely inserted, her occupation is baldly stated as 'fanatic'. In the current ODNB she is 'prophet and writer', and indeed the entry concludes with E.P. Thompson's endorsement of her as 'England's greatest prophetess of all.' The Southcott material begins here on p. 31. At the beginning of the volume there are, in another hand, 'Rules to be observed in Building Ships', which peters out on p. 4. Beginning at the other end is more manuscript relating to shipping, but this rapidly becomes messy and/or nonsensical. There are desultory later notes, one dated 1918.

Covers generally rubbed at the extremities and scuffed to sides, small loss to leather at the joint ends and tail, but the joints themselves entirely sound, internally remarkably clean and fresh but for the very occasional spot and a very mild damp-stain to the top portions of some plates. Superficially worn but still a very good copy indeed. With the half title and errata leaf. One folding map printed in black and red also highlighted in red by hand (showing the conjectural Atlantis), two other folding maps, three folding engraved illustrated plates, and 4 other engraved illustrated plates. First edition, an unusually fresh complete copy in handsome contemporary tree calf, of this survey of the Atlantic Islands by French naturalist Jean Baptiste Bory de Saint-Vincent (1778-1846). The "Isles Fortunees", the Blessed Isles, of the Atlantic, now understood to be the Canary Islands, were thought in classical antiquity to have been the abode of mythological heroes and beasts, the site of some of Hercules's adventures, as well as the possible location of Atlantis. This survey by Bory de St Vincent is in the main a scientific (naturalistic, geographical and archaeological) study of the islands, but does engage with the mythological ideas about the archipelago, most notably providing a whole chapter (illustrated by the famous folding map, present here) postulating "That the Canary Islands and the other Islands of the Atlantic ocean are in fact the debris of a continent", namely the mythical Atlantis. He devotes a second chapter to the native Guanches, and speculates that they might have been the last remaining Atlanteans. The author himself was already widely travelled, having been sent as a naturalist with Captain Baudin's expedition to Australia in 1798, getting as far as Mauritius and exploring Reunion Island and others in the Indian Ocean. Later in life he joined the army, was present at the battle of Ulm and Austerlitz, and in 1808 went to Spain with Marshal Soult. In 1815 he supported Napoleon, and was consequently proscribed after the Bourbon restoration, spending several years in exile but returning quietly to Paris in 1820. later in 1829 he headed a scientific expedition to the Pelloponnese, and in 1839 led an exploration of Algeria. Bory was an anti-Cuvierian supporter of Lamarck's theories of evolution, and his editorship from 1822 of the Dictionnaire classique d'histoire naturelle (Classical Dictionary of Natural History) is particularly significant insofar as a copy travelled with Darwin on the Beagle.

Paris, Veuve Richard (impression Guilleminet), 1803. Wellcome III, 52
