RIDDELL, MARIA WOODLY, COMPILER
London: Printed at the Oriental Press for T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1802, 1802. First edition. Jackson, Romantic Poetry by Women, 16a. Some light foxing, but overall a fine, handsome copy.. 8vo, modern quarter calf period style, original blue paper boards, cream leather spine label, gilt rules and lettering, untrimmed. Half-title present. An anthology of almost 100 poems, compiled by Maria Riddell (1772-1808), a young Scottish woman who grew up in the Leeward Islands, which she wrote about in her only other published work, Voyages to the Madeira, and Leeward Isles (1792). Metrical Miscellany is comprised of poems by friends and acquaintances, all apparently unpublished. It includes nearly 20 poems by Ms. Riddell, and ones by Richard Brinsley Sheridan, Anna Laetitia Barbauld, and members of the Roscoe family, et al. Riddell had been a friend of Robert Burns, who assisted her in getting her Voyages published, but a few years later their friendship was strained over an incident involving his drunken behavior. For some time Riddell refused Burns' apologies, and he resentfully responded with a "Complimentary Epigram on Maria Riddell" and later a "Monody on a Lady Famed for Her Caprice." There were also poems by others about Burns and Riddell. See J. DeLancey Ferguson, "Robert Burns and Maria Riddell," in Modern Philology, vol. 28, no. 2, and The Burns Encyclopedia by Maurice Lindsay (1959).

YOUNG, THOMAS. - ["AN EPOCH-MAKING CONTRIBUTION TO THE THEORY OF LIGHT IN ALL ITS PHASES" - PMM 259]
London, Bulmer, 1802. 4to. In recent marbled paper wrappers. Extracted from "Philosophical Transactions", Read as the Bakerian lecture, November 12, 1801. Including title-page of volume. Top of verso of title-page reinforced. Inner margin of leaves reinforced. (2), iii-vi, 11-48, (2), 387-398 pp + plate. ¶ First appearance of Young's landmark paper: "an epoch-making contribution to the theory of light in all its phases" (PMM 259).Young was the last of the natural philosophers who could know all that there was to be known. He was the perfector of the wave theory of light, he expounded the mechanism of vision, stated the laws of blood circulation, introduced the modern conceptions of energy' and work done', evolved a sound theory of tides, and helped to decipher the hieroglyphics of the Rosetta Stone. This Bakerian Lecture delivered in November 1801 is an epoch-making contribution to the theory of light in all its phases. Hooke, Huygens and above all Newton had discussed the nature of light in the seventeenth century.but Young, in this and two subsequent papers printed in the Philosophical Transactions, July 1802, and his Bakerian Lecture, November 1803, based himself firmly on the theory that radiant light consists of undulations of the luminous ether : a theory that held the field until the latter-day notions of Planck and J.J. LUCAS, Mr, attrib.)
Printed by B. McMillan. 1802. [4], 293, [1]p; [4], 262pp; [4], 293, [1]p, half titles. 8vo. CAROL CHECK - for this cata, begin here with: Half titles. An uncut copy, text browned & foxed, tears without loss to vol. II, F8 & M7. Rebound in recent quarter calf, marbled boards, gilt banded spines, red morocco labels. Scarce. BL, Leeds & Bristol only on Copac. The Flowers of Literature for 1803, notes that 'the author of the Strolling Player, we understand Mr. Lucas, a young writer of good talents and virtuous intentions, has painted human nature, in most instances, admirably correct; but sometimes injudiciously, in those situations and scenes in which she ought to be screened from the public eye. From such a writer, however, we have, in his future productions, every thing to expect; and we consider the above-mentioned novel as the first emanation of extraordinary talents'. 'William Templeton is no doubt an imaginary character, but from the accuracy with which the author describes the wretchedness of a country company, and the whimsical vicissitudes which it is the lot of a strolling actor to experience, he has, very probably, been personally engaged in many of the adventures recorded in this history.' Paris, Ed. Stereotype d'Hérans, 1802. 12°. 2 Bände in 1 Band.

SHAKESPEARE, William.
London: by W. Bulmer and Co. for John and Josiah Boydell, George and W. Nichol; from the types of W. Martin, 1802. London: by W. Bulmer and Co. for John and Josiah Boydell, George and W. Nichol; from the types of W. Martin,, 1802. 9 volumes, folio (418 x 315 mm). Contemporary marbled calf, rebacked with original spines laid down, smooth spines lettered and tooled in gilt. With 96 plates including frontispiece, after Reynolds, Northcote, Porter, Bunbury, Opie, Westall, Smirke, Stothard, Hamilton, and other eminent artists. A few light scratches to covers, occasional instances of foxing but generally clean, paper repairs to half-titles of vols. V and VII, vol. V with staining at foot of first two leaves, slight creasing to first few leaves of vol. VIII. A very good set. First Boydell edition. This lavish edition was the brainchild of John Boydell (1720-1804), who had been responsible for the publication in mezzotint of some of the most impressive paintings of the period. He and his nephew Josiah Boydell conceived this set, with typography by Bulmer and paper by Whatman, to be embellished with one series of large and another series of small prints, all taken from specially commissioned paintings by leading artists and engravers. The endeavour was not as successful as hoped. The costs were enormous, the first prints to come out in 1792 were not well received, and the European trade in luxury goods was badly hit by the Napoleonic wars. Nevertheless Boydell's Shakespeare has long retained its appeal to collectors, and Jaggard notes its increasing rarity as parts are broken … [Click Below for Full Description]

COLLINS, David.
London: T. Cadell, Jun. and W. Davies, 1798 & 1802. Two volumes, quarto, with three engraved charts and 32 engraved plates including eight in the text (five handcoloured); contempoirary polished calf, spines elegantly gilt, with double morocco labels; quarter morocco bookform boxes. A beautiful set of the two-volume first edition of the complete work, published as separate volumes four years apart.Collins had arrived with the First Fleet as Judge-Advocate and was secretary to Governor Phillip. His book is a valuable account of the early settlement by an educated and observant resident of ten years, and was the last of the Australian foundation books to be published. This majestic work, often described as the earliest history of Australia as an English colony, contains the most detailed and painstaking of all descriptions of the voyage and first settlement found in any of the early narratives. The book is illustrated with full-page engravings prepared in London by the well-known artist Edward Dayes from sketches done in the colony by the convict artist Thomas Watling. They are the first views to have been published of British settlements at Sydney and Parramatta. The first volume, published in 1798, is scarce today. For some reason the second volume, which came out four years later, is more difficult to find; 'The second volume is of the greatest importance, not only for its detailed chronicle of events but because of its narrative of voyages and expeditions of discovery... The journals of Bass and Flinders are of particular importance since Bass's journal has never been reco … [Click Below for Full Description]

HOME, Everard.
London: W. Bulmer and Co., 1802. Quarto, 19 pp. and four large folding plates; contemporary (? original) neat quarter red roan binding. The first scientific notice of the echidna: this important separately-issued pamphlet is very rare in this first issue form. The text (and engravings) would later appear, from the same type-setting, in Philosophical Transactions for 1802, but this is an example of a special separate and earlier printing made available for the author, differing in certain details, and separately paginated (1 to 19; as against 348 to 364 in the Transactions, now available online) and with a printed note on the verso of the title-page in which "Gentlemen who are indulged with separate Copies of their Communications" are asked to ensure that they don't get reprinted before the volume of Transactions is published. Sir Everard Home's study is illustrated with four fine engraved plates by Basire of tremendous interest and some beauty, particularly the two depicting complete specimens. The first of these was based on a specimen preserved in spirits and given to Sir Joseph Banks by William Balmain in 1802, while the second followed a drawing of a Tasmanian specimen shot at Adventure Bay in Tasmania by Lieutenant Guthrie in 1790, then serving on the Providence under William Bligh. The other plates show detailed sections of the head, palate, and tongue of the echidna. This work followed closely on the heels of Home's study of the platypus, and it was Home who first hypothesised the familial link between the two animals. The first notice of this animal was by George Sha … [Click Below for Full Description]

Wood, John
New York: NP, 1802. First Edition. Leather Binding. Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" First edition, second issue of one of the more famous suppressed books in American history. This attack on Adams and his Administration was suppressed at the hands of Aaron Burr himself, of whom the author, strangely enough was a political ally. "This book was printed and ready for publication in December, 1801, but was suppressed at the instigation of Aaron Burr as being incorrect and also libelous. Overtures were made to the publishers, Messrs, Barlas and Ward, by Burr and his friends, for the purchase of the edition, and it was finally given up to them. The book was subsequently issued ... When ... placed on sale a new title page was added bearing the imprint, 'New York printed 1802'."--Tomkins, Bibl. Jeffersoniana, 1887, no. 279. Although the work had been written to aid his political fortunes, Burr took to undo it because he feared the work "would be more dangerous than helpful to his party" (Dictionary of American Biography). This is the second issue, with the second title page omitting a publisher, and no frontis. An early reader has written on the title verso in pencil "The History of the Administration of John Adams Esqr by John Wood (A.S.S.) was written by a dissapointed [sic] office Hunter and abounds with a number of vile & malic[i]ous Falsehoods[.] PPL[.]" This inscription is prior to the current binding, and appears to be close to the date of publication. Bound in 19th-century brown morocco over marbled boards (joints rubbed and starting; spines and edges rubbed). From the col … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dante Alighieri, Rev Henry Boyd [translator]
London : T Cadell Jun. and W Davies, 1802 A good to very good copy of the first translation into English of Dante's Divine Comedy. This copy retains the original marbled boards, with new calf spines and corners, so the bindings are clean, sound and tight with some light scuffing to the boards. The translation was completed by Henry Boyd, then Vicar of Rathfryland in County Down. The contents are complete with frontispiece portrait by Stothard and titles and half titles to each volume. Vol I: frontispiece; title; dedication; half title to Inferno; text 408pp. Vol II: title; half title; preliminary essay and text 384pp. Vol III: title; half title; preliminary essay and text with index, errata and addenda 420pp (more detailed collation available on request). All the volumes retain their original endpapers with repair at the joints and stamped ownership details of Richd Hopkins of Huntingdonshire. All the endpapers have some marking and Vol II has lost the corner tip of the rear free endpaper. Contents overall are clean with some browning and spotting at times, particularly noticeable at the beginning of Vol II where there tends to be mottling in the top outer corner and the paper is a little fragile there, and brown toning to later leaves. Vol I has a brown mark in top margin of pp 156/7, possibly from an old page marker. Vol III has professional paper repair to the bottom corner of p 229.
