EDWARDS, George.
London: Printed by S. Hamilton, 1802. London: Printed by S. Hamilton,, 1802. by means arranged in one comprehensive and adequate design; which will enable the wealth and power of Great Britain to increase at least in proportion with those of France; including hints for establishing a general balance of the different nations of Europe, by a plan of progressive improvement. Part I. Octavo. Uncut and mostly unopened in original boards, printed label to spine. Ducal bookplate to pastedown. Joints cracked but holding, spine backing worn with loss. A very good copy in the fragile original boards. First edition of this proposal for radical reform of the British government, economy, and social organisation. The political writer George Edwards (1752-1823) "was an untiring propounder of political and social schemes, with a particular enthusiasm for reform of the constitution, of agricultural practice, of tax laws, and of the army. But his rhetoric tended to be more extravagant than the thoroughness or consistency of his plans would warrant" (ODNB). The present work presents the author's plans for reform as the best means to defeat Napoleon; as with his other works, the titles of which include "The Political Interests of Great Britain" (1801), "The Civil, Political, and Religious Means of Establishing the Kingdom of God upon Earth" (1805), and "The Discovery of the True and Natural Era of Mankind" (1807), it made little impact. The second volume followed the next year, and a three-volume edition was issued in 1804. Part I is remarkably scarce in any state; only the British Library, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thomas Forrest (navigator) Thomas Forrest (c. 1729 – c. 1802) was an English navigator who worked for the British East India Company. He appears to have served for some time in the Royal Navy, and to have been a midshipman in 1745. Passages in his own writings show that he was employed in Indian waters from 1753 almost continuously. He implies that during part of the Seven Years' War he was on the Elizabeth, in the squadron under Admiral Charles Steevens; but this cannot be verified from the pay-book. In 1762 Forrest had command of a Company ship. In 1770 he was engaged in forming the new settlement at Balambangan w … [Click Below for Full Description]

- Blackmer 995. Weber II, 649. Atabey 697. Graesse IV, 137. Vgl. Chatzipanagioti-Sangmeister 538f.

Just ask! 1802 History of Decline & Fall of Roman Empire ROME Famed Edward Gibbon 12v SET "Lo, there appeared a truly classic work: a history not majestic like Livy, nor compressed like Tacitus; not stamped with character like Clarendon; perhaps not so deep as Robertson's 'Scotland,' but a thousand degress above his 'Charles'." - Allibone, on Gibbon's 'History' (v. II, p. 1827) Originally printed in 1776, "The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" was written in six volumes by Edward Gibbon. It has maintained its status as one of the most important literary achievements of the 18th-century and saw numerous editions. This book's popularity was partly due to it become the model used by modern historians and historical authors. This led to Gibbon being considered the first modern historian on the Roman Empire. This 'new edition' is printed in twelve volumes and includes a frontispiece of Gibbon in volume I. Early 19th-century examples of this title are exceedingly rare and should be considered a 'staple' in every library or collection. [Click Below for Full Description]

Malton, Thomas
London: T. Bensley for T. Malton, 1802. Four parts (all published) with six plates in each part, a total of twenty-four coloured aquatint plates in original wrappers, each with original oval paper label to upper cover, housed in a cloth chemise (evidence of a bookplate being removed) and contained in a leather backed slipcase (some minor splitting to cloth to extremities). Wrappers slightly chipped and faded, a couple of light water stains to lower cover of part two, each plate with tissue guard a couple of which are heavily chipped with loss, most lightly browned, but the plates are generally quite bright and clean. The plates are uncoloured in Abbey, and although Prideaux (page 262) mentions "twenty-four delicately coloured plates", and Abbey notes that "one or two sets coloured for special clients may have been issued", it is most likely that this colouring is later. O. O., nach 1802. Notenmanuskript. Quer Folio (240 x 330 mm). 30 Bll. letzte Seite leer. Martin & Ogden, Newbern, 1802. Two volumes bound as one. [xii], 364; [x], 315, [1] pp. Full leather binding. New leather spine label with gilt title recently added. Text is complete. Two small sections clipped from title page (see pic), though not affecting the text. Presumably this was done to remove a personal signature at some point. The second volume's title page is not clipped. Translated By the Father of Louisiana Jurisprudence Pothier, Robert Joseph [1699-1722]. [Martin, Francois-Xavier (1762-1846), Translator]. A Treatise on Obligations, Considered in a Moral and Legal View. Translated from the French of Pothier. Newbern, NC: Martin & Ogden, 1802. First American edition. In the decades before the Civil War, this classic treatise was required reading for Anglo-American practitioners, scholars and law students. Marvin quotes and endorses Sir William Jones's assessment of Pothier's treatises: "For my own part, I am so charmed with them, that if my undissembled fondness for the study of jurisprudence, were never to produce any greater benefit to the public, than barely the introduction of Pothier to the acquaintances of my countrymen, I should think that I had, in some measure, discharged the debt which every man, according to Lord Coke owes to his profession." An important figure in the legal history of the south, Martin was a French-born lawyer, judge, author, translator, printer and historian. His career began in New Bern, North Carolina; he later moved to the Louisiana territory, where he played the central role in the reorganization of the legal system. Appointed a … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
