        Byblis, A Tragedy.

2 p.l., 67 pp. Small 4to, orig. wrappers (a bit of foxing). London: [Privately] Printed by W. Bulmer, 1802. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed on the upper wrapper "For Lady Mount Cashell at the Aquila Nera" in what is quite certainly the hand of the author. The "Aquila Nera" in the inscription is very probably the same inn at Livorno where the Shelley family stayed for a week -- arriving on the 17th of June 1819 -- while searching for a villa. The inn seems to be have a favorite stop for English travellers while travelling in Tuscany. We know that Drummond and Lady Mount Cashell were both in Italy in the second half of 1802, close to Livorno. Drummond (1770?-1828), Scottish diplomat, classical scholar, and M.P., was very influential in the development of the ideas of the Shelley. Drummond's researches into comparative mythology and, especially, his sceptical opinions on the Bible influenced a generation of free thinkers, including Shelley. Drummond's Academical Questions (1805), a manifesto for immaterialism, convinced Shelley to abandon his French materialist philosophical beliefs. Lady Mount Cashell (1773-1835), born Margaret King, had Mary Wollstonecraft as her tutor, who inculcated republican sympathies in her student. Later, Lady Mount Cashell became an intimate friend of Mary Shelley, the daughter of Mary Wollstonecraft, and her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley. While travelling in Europe, Lady Mount Cashell met George William Tighe, an Irishman, and they fell madly in love. She left her husband and children in 1803, travelled in Italy with Tighe -- calling herself "Mrs. Mason," taking the name from Mary Wollstonecraft's Original Stories from Real Life. Claire Clairmont remembered her as to have studied medicine in Jena dressed as a man. Tighe and "Mrs. Mason" finally settled in Pisa and received the Shelleys, introducing them to the intellectual and social world of their adopted city. This copy bears authorial changes: on page 35, one line of text has been completely erased. On page 40, Drummond has made three corrections. Fine copy in original state. Rare. Preserved in a box. .

London: T. Bensley, 1802. viii,viii,[5]-446,60,24,[8]pp. plus 123 plates. Thick quarto. Contemporary paneled calf, gilt, a.e.g. Corners lightly worn, boards rubbed. Bookplate on front pastedown. Very minor foxing. Very good. Third edition, revised and generally considered the best edition, of this important furniture-making treatise, with a full complement of engraved plates as well as the Appendix and Accompaniment. "... in 1791 his masterpiece, THE CABINET MAKER AND UPHOLSTERER'S DRAWING- BOOK, began to be published by subscription in fortnightly sections (forty-two in all), priced 1s. A slightly larger second edition appeared in 1794 and a third with some small amendments in 1802. A German version was translated by G. T. Wenzel and published in Leipzig. It was intended for practising members of the trade, and addressed 'to Cabinet-Makers and Upholsterers in General'. The 717 subscribers were almost entirely established furniture makers, in contrast to those of Thomas Chippendale's GENTLEMAN AND CABINET MAKER'S DIRECTOR (1754, 1755, and 1762) which had included members of aristocracy and gentry. Sheraton's intention (inspired perhaps by his Nonconformist background) was to improve the work of uneducated artisans by teaching them proportion and perspective drawing, since previous manuals had been deficient in this. He firmly believed in the immutable laws of 'Geometry and real Science' and wished to show how these could be applied to the ephemeral nature of taste particularly in furniture design. In his own words his intention was to make the Drawing Book 'as permanently useful as I could and to unite with usefulness the taste of the times' (Sheraton, Drawing Book, 1802 edn, 355)" - DNB. In fact the third edition contains more than "small amendments", and has always been considered the most desirable. DNB (online).

A Description of England and Wales

London: Snagg, R., 1802. 122pp. This book is part of a series printed by Ruffy and Evans for the publisher R. Snagg and is among the rarest miniature books ever printed. With content intended for children, the printer has ingeniously abbreviated longer words to accommodate more text. Louis Bondy notes that "Because of their tiny size and perhaps also due to their unusually absorbing contents, very few copies have survived; most of them must have been lost or read to shreds." Bound in the original half cloth and mottled boards with a hand-written paper spine label. Slight edgewear, spine lightly faded, two signatures sprung, else a near fine copy in the original state. (Bondy, pp. 62-63; MBN 32; Welsh 2287; American Art Sale 133). (1 7/8 by 1 3/8; 49x35mm.).

Paris, 23. IX. 186[?]. 1 S., 8°. [An den österr. Chemiker u. - Versand D: 12,00 EUR Sainte-Claire Deville, Schrötter, Chemie, Brief, Letter, Lettre, Briefe, Autograph, Autographe, Autographen, Autograf, Autografe, Autografen, Signatur, Signiert, Signed, Signature, Unterschrift, Eigenhändig, Handschrift, Handschriften, Manuscript, Manuscrit, ALS, A.L.S., LAS, L.A.S.

Madrid?), which states: "Despues de la obra de Alonso Barba nos parece este tratado el mas completo en castellano del beneficio de los metales de Oro y Plata por fundicion y almalgamacion, por lo que lo juzgamos digno de imprimirse." Only two library copies listed at auction in the last 50 years: one copy,, in 2001, sold for $2500 at Sotheby's. This copy is in very good condition, bound in contemporary vellum.

A general history of the Christian church, from the fall of the Western Empire to the present time ...

Northumberland [PA]: Pr. for the author by Andrew Kennedy 8vo (21.6 cm, 8.5"). 4 vols. I: xxxvi, 475, [1 (blank)] pp. II: vii, [1], 539, [1 (blank)] pp. III: [6], 488 pp. IV: x, [3], xii–xiii, [1], 480 pp.. 1802–03 First edition. Priestley, a controversial theologian as well as a chemist who may be best remembered today for experiments with gasses that led to the discovery of oxygen, here continues his General History of the Christian Church to the Fall of the Western Empire (published in two volumes in 1790) up through 1802. (Although the present set, dedicated to Thomas Jefferson, stands alone, each book does close with an acknowledgment of its number in both series — i.e., "The end of Volume the third of the Second Part, or Volume the fifth of the whole Work".) Priestley's ecclesiastical history not only canvasses Catholicism and the other branches of Christianity, but considers Judaism and Islam (if the latter to a somewhat limited extent) as well. This work was printed in Northumberland, Pennsylvania, where Priestley settled in 1782, his liberal political opinions and defense of the French Revolution (in addition to his status as a nonconforming minister of questionable orthodoxy) having obliged him to emigrate from England to the United States. Provenance: Each title-page inscribed by N. Irwin. Recent quarter calf over marbled paper–covered sides, paper darkened at edges and/or turn-ins on some volumes, most notably vol. IV; spines with gilt-stamped leather title and volume labels. Title-pages with faint impression of a once-pencilled shelf number; a few page edges slightly ragged; some instances of small spots of foxing, mostly in margins, and varying degrees of offsetting.

Printed for The Editor & Elizabeth Dickens, Philadelphia 1802 - Quarto (32cm); printed wrappers, disbound, but untrimmed; pp.[169]-176. Text is toned (though not brittle), mild wear to extremities, with scattered foxing; Very Good+. Important issue of this Federalist newspaper, published by Joseph Dennie and Philadelphia bookseller Asbury Dickens. Notable for the inclusion of 'The Wolf King; or Little Red Riding Hood,' a decidedly grotesque version of the traditional Little Red Riding Hood story told in 26 stanzas. First published in Terror Tales (London: W.Bulmer & Co., 1801) and once attributed to M.G. Lewis, the publication in The Port Folio marks its first appearance in the United States. In comparison to the Brothers Grimm version of 1812, this version lacks the redemptive appearance of the huntsman, and ends with Little Red Riding Hood meeting a gruesome end at the hands of the wolf. "His hungry teeth the wolf king gnash'd, His sparkling eyes with fury flash'd, He'd op'd his jaws all sprent with blood, And fell on small red riding hood. / He tore out bowels one and two, "Little maid, I will eat you!" But when he tore out three and four, The little maid she was no more!" Not the first appearance of Little Red Riding Hood in the United States (OCLC notes three pre-1802 American editions of the traditional version based on Perrault, along with two others), though certainly the first appearance of this particular iteration. Additionally, this issue contains obituaries for Martha Washington and Sarah Jay (wife of John Jay). Uncommon.

II.“) namhaft machen.         The friend of women: translated from the French of Bourdier De Villemert. By Alexander Morrice.

London: printed by Knight and Compton, for the author. 1802. 8vo., (2) + v - vii + (1) + (5) - 164pp., original boards, a little soiled, neatly rebacked with printed spine label, entirely uncut. A good large copy. First edition of this translation. Boudier de Villemert's popular treatise on women, first published in French in Paris (1758), was reprinted many times and translated into English both as The Ladies Friend> and as The Friend of Women>. It seems to have been particularly popular in America with translations published in New Haven (1784 &c.), Philadelphia (1771 &c.), and Danbury (Conn.) (1794). A London printing appeared in 1766. The book itself, far from contributing to any concept of women's emancipation, painted a traditional portrait of the 18th century European woman, with sections on the 'studies suitable for women', on the 'occupations of women', pleasures, 'the luxury of women', 'dress of women', marriage, education of children, 'domestic government', and more. Alexander Morrice, the translator, dedicates the book to Her Royal Highness, Caroline, Princess of Wales. It was, he suggests, 'intended to raise the female sex to their entitled rank in society'.

Travels through the Southern Provinces of the Russian Empire, in the Years 1793 and 1794.

      A. Strahan for T.N. Longman O. Rees and others London -03 1802 - Two volumes 4to (27.3 x 22.5 cm). xxiii including title, 552; xxx incl. title, 523 pp., in all with 28 vignettes including 23 hand-coloured, 51 numbered plates of which 25 folding and 43 hand-coloured, all after Geissler mostly engraved by him and Metland, 4 engr. maps incl. one hand-coloured and 3 folding by Russel, most engravings protected by tissue guards; very occasionnal light offsetting or spotting. Contemporary polished calf, spines with raised bands, gilt and lettered in gilt in compartments, marbled edges; re-hinged, joints skilfully restored. Fine copy of the first edition in English of "an extremely charming colour plate book [which] deserves a place in every colour plate book collection for its numerous attractive coloured vignettes, an unusual feature" (Tooley). Pallas' second and most picturesque travel, which lasted 6 years from 1768 to 1774, took his team (including the young artist Geissler, as well as Pallas' wife and daughter) in a scientific journey along the Volga to Astrakhan, the Caspian Sea, and then the Caucasus and 'Taurida', that is the Crimea, to which the entire second volume is dedicated. "These travels into the Crimea and to the Caucasus are less confined to scientific objects and therefore are more generally interesting than his former work" (Cox). A handsome production due mainly to the numerous attractive and charming hand-coloured illustrations which appear as vignettes in the text as well as additional plates. They depict the natives of the regions traversed, their costumes and occupations, the scenery and landscapes, showing for example fine views of Bakhchisaray, the Sebastopol and Balaklava bays. This example is especially attractive for its vivid colours and lovely contemporary binding. Abbey Travel 222; Cox I, 199; Hiler 683; Tooley 357. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Musen-Almanach, für das Jahr 1802.

Tübingen: in der Cotta'schen Buchhandlung 12mo (16cm; 6.25"). vi, 293, [1] pp.. 1802 Poetry, including lyric poetry by the two editors and such others as "Inhumanus," "Sophie B[ernhardi]," "Bonaventura," "Mnioch," and "Novalis." Bonaventura was the pseudonym of Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling and Novalis the pseudonym of Georg Philipp Friedrich Freiherr von Hardenberg; the latter's two poems were from his as then unpublished novel, Heinrich von Ofterdingen. This is => the first issue of Schlegel & Tieck's literary annual, patterned on the original Musen-Almanach (1796–1800) of Schiller, to which both were contributors. They broke with Schiller's adherence to the "old" and championed Romanticism in their publication. => All of the poems are early entrants in the German Romantic movement. Besides being the title of both those annuals, "Musen-Almanach" is a long-established genre term for these literary annuals published in Germany from ca. 1770 to the middle of the 19th century. Original publisher's wrappers with printed paper spine label, grey-green outside, light blue inside; dust-soiled with spine darkest. Uncut and partially unopened, with occasional light foxing (only).
