        Musen-Almanach, für das Jahr 1802.

Tübingen: in der Cotta'schen Buchhandlung 12mo (16cm; 6.25"). vi, 293, [1] pp.. 1802 Poetry, including lyric poetry by the two editors and such others as "Inhumanus," "Sophie B[ernhardi]," "Bonaventura," "Mnioch," and "Novalis." Bonaventura was the pseudonym of Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling and Novalis the pseudonym of Georg Philipp Friedrich Freiherr von Hardenberg; the latter's two poems were from his as then unpublished novel, Heinrich von Ofterdingen. This is => the first issue of Schlegel & Tieck's literary annual, patterned on the original Musen-Almanach (1796–1800) of Schiller, to which both were contributors. They broke with Schiller's adherence to the "old" and championed Romanticism in their publication. => All of the poems are early entrants in the German Romantic movement. Besides being the title of both those annuals, "Musen-Almanach" is a long-established genre term for these literary annuals published in Germany from ca. 1770 to the middle of the 19th century. Original publisher's wrappers with printed paper spine label, grey-green outside, light blue inside; dust-soiled with spine darkest. Uncut and partially unopened, with occasional light foxing (only). A very good copy.

The Divina Commedia of Dante Alighieri, Consisting of the Inferno - Purgatorio - and Paradiso

London: A. Strahan for T. Cadell, 1802. First English language edition. A lovely set of the first complete translation into English of Dante's "Divine Comedy." Full contemporary tree calf, spines expertly rebacked to style, morocco spine lables, gilt borders and spine panels. Three 8vo volumes (pages 216 x 132 mm), collating: vi, [2], 408; [iv], 56, [ii (divisional title)], 57-62, 65-384 (complete); [iv], 420pp., engraved frontispiece portrait plate of Dante by Thomas Stothard in vol.1, half-titles in volumes 2 and 3, complete (despite the funny numbering sequence in volume 2). A few pages lightly foxed (heaviest on the first title page), but on the whole an excellent set. One of the world's great masterpieces and a foundational text of Italian literature. The Comedy took over a decade for Dante to write, he worked on it in exile, having been sent out of his native Florence in 1302, when his political faction fell out of favor. The work's genius was quickly recognized -- Boccaccio himself was so obsessed with it that he was responsible for adding the prefix "Divine." Over the years, it has influenced countless writers, among them Ezra Pound, T. S. Eliot, and James Joyce. Borges claimed it was "the best book literature has achieved." Boyd (1748/49 - 1832), a member of the Irish clergy, was responsible for the first English translation of the Inferno in 1785 as well as the complete work in this 1802 edition. His translation would help bring Dante back into literary circles aften he had fallen by the critical wayside in the aftermath of the Renaissance and Enlightenment. The "Divine Comedy" soon regained its popularity; before the 19th century was up Longfellow would also try his hand at a translation and William Blake would make drawings of some of its more famous passages.

The Book of Common Prayer, and administration of the Sacraments, and other rites and ceremonies of the Church, according to the use of the United Church of England and Ireland: Together with the Psalter, or Psalms of David, pointed as they are to be sung or said in churches.

London: Pub. for John Reeves (pr. by W. Bulmer) 8vo (24 cm, 9.5"). vi, [694] pp.. 1802 There were minor differences between the Prayer Books of the Church of England and the Church of Ireland up until 1801, the year that the churches merged; the various 1801 BCPs were the first to use the "United Church" designation. John Reeves had been appointed king's printer in 1800, and edited his own version of the BCP, of which this is the second edition; the separate title-page following the preliminary matter is dated 1801. (That preliminary matter, offering historical and liturgical commentary, is extensive and interesting.) Fore-edge: This beautiful example bears a subtly shaded => fore-edge painting showing Westminster Abbey in the background behind a waterfront view with sailboats. Binding: Full straight-grain dark olive green morocco, covers framed in elegant feather and pearl twist gilt roll, turn-ins with floral gilt roll. Stone-pattern marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Binding as above, mild rubbing overall with some abraded areas consolidated, joints and extremities subtly repaired, aesthetically appropriate endbands supplied. Title-page with inked ownership inscription dated 1803, "The gift of my beloved husband." Intermittent faint spots of foxing, mostly confined to early leaves. One inked marginal annotation in an early hand, three psalms (145–47) with small inked emphasis marks, pages otherwise clean.

        Infidel Father, The

London: Printed by A. Strahan, 1802. - Jane West's Attack on Atheism"An Overcharged Picture of the Vanity, Extravagance, and Self-Importance"[WEST, Mrs. Jane]. The Infidel Father; By the author of "A Tale of the Times," "A Gossip's Story," &c. In three volumes. London: Printed by A. Strahan, 1802. First edition. Three small octavo volumes (6 1/4 x 4 inches; 159 x 101 mm.). iv, 306 pp; [ii, blank], iii-viii, 345, [1, advertisements] pp; iv, 346 pp. Bound ca. 1802 by Jacques of Chichester (with his binders ticket on the front paste-down of volume one) in quarter brown calf over marbled boards with vellum tips. Smooth spines decoratively tooled in gilt with a 'feather' design, red morocco labels lettered in gilt (label on volume two replaced). Light wear to joints and spine extremities, still an excellent and untouched (apart from one spine label) set in its original 'provincial' binding."The particular design of the present work is, to shew [sic] the superiority which religious principle possesses, when compared with a sense of honour, moral fitness, or a love of general applause. The story is confessedly subordinate to this aim; and those who dislike it will observe, that the argumentative part is not affected by the faults of the narrative. The episodal characters have a use besides relieving the sombrous hue of the principal personages. I wish they may be considered as an overcharged picture of the vanity, extravagance, and self-importance, that for some years infected the middle class of society, threatening destruction to the sound sense, decent propriety, and manly virtues of this most important portion of the community." (Introduction).Jane West (1758–1852), who published as Prudentia Homespun and Mrs. West, was an English novelist, poet, playwright, and writer of conduct literature and educational tracts. In 1800 she wrote to the man of letters Thomas Percy, bishop of Dromore, seeking his patronage and describing herself as self-instructed and interested in poetry from an early age. By 1783 she was married to Thomas West (d. 1823), a yeoman farmer of Little Bowden, Leicestershire. Jane West benefited from the acquaintance with Bishop Percy, whom she visited in 1810, although her literary connections were never extensive. She corresponded with Sarah Trimmer and wrote a series of poems in praise of women writers: Trimmer, Elizabeth Carter, Charlotte Turner Smith, whom she visited in Ireland and Anna Seward.West's writing is consistently conservative and didactic, but she did advocate expanding the education for women. Her works serve as a counterpoint to the revolutionary politics of the day: A Tale of the Times (1799) is anti-Jacobin; The Infidel Father (1802) attacks atheism; and one of her conduct texts, Letters to a Young Lady, "forms an ideological counterpart to Mary Wollstonecraft's Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792). Though she was called "strident," her writing was popular in its day for its "improving" qualities. Letters to a Young Man (1801), for example, went through six editions by 1818. Her poems appeared in journals and anthologies and she was a long standing contributor to the Gentleman's Magazine. Today she is best known as the author of a novel that served as a source text for Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility (1811). West's A Gossip’s Story (1796), like Austen’s novel, features two sisters, one full of rational sense and the other of romantic, emotive sensibility. West’s romantic sister shares the same name as Austen’s: Marianne. There are further textual similarities, described in Looser et al. ed's Valancourt Classics edition of the novel (2015). Austen, like Shakespeare before her, significantly reworked West’s plot and characters to suit her own vision.NCBEL III, 772. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Iris Pseudacorus / Iris faux-acore

Paris: Imprimerie de Didot jeune, 1802. Stipple engraving, printed in colour and finished by hand, engraved by Langlois. Very good condition, with the exception of being trimmed at the top edge into image. Pierre-Joseph Redouté was one of the world's great flower painters. Born into a family that had been painters for at least two generations, Redouté went to Paris in 1782 with his brother where they worked as scene painters for the Théâtre italien. Redouté painted flowers in his spare time. The search for subjects led him to the Jardin du Roi and eventually Gerard van Spaendonck who made him an assistant. While at the Jardin du Roi, Redouté came to know Charles-Louis L'Heritier, an amateur botanist and writer of independent means. He gave Redouté a full time job as an illustrator, instructing him in plant anatomy. Redouté's "functional" understanding of plants contributed greatly to the clarity of his depictions. But it was Redouté's work in stipple engraving and colour printing that was to be of the greatest importance. Stippling and the application of two or three colour inks to one plate were engraving innovations that Redouté brought to French printmaking, and these were brought to perfection in Les Liliacées from which this work comes. Les Liliacées is one of two Redouté masterworks, the other being Les Roses. These works demonstrate the appropriateness of the accolade "Raphael of Flowers", for one is constantly impressed by the exquisite compositional sense and clarity of vision. More than with any other painter, one sees in Redouté's flowers living, breathing beings at their most beautiful moment. Cf. Nissen BBI 1597; cf. Great Flower Books (1990), p 128; cf. Dunthorne p 231; cf. Stafleu & Cowan TL2 8747; cf. MacPhaeil, Redouteana , 10.

Leonardo da Vinci. 236 pages. 21.5 x 14 cm. Engraved frontispiece of Da Vinci, illustrated with 23 copper-plates, one double-paged and other figures. The first English edition published 1721 translated by John Senex contained fewer plates. Table Of Chapters presents corresponding Chapters in the original edition with a key for comparison. Although we know today that this text was only a disorganized, selective compilation of his precepts on painting -- The Treatise on Painting" was germane for disseminating, for better of worse, Leonardo's art theory in Renaissance and Baroque Europe. Two pages of adverts at end of text. Interior contents fresh and clean, renewed endpapers, slight corner wear.

A Choutry, Or Place of Worship, Carved out of the top of the Rock of Trichinopoly, in high repute, by the Malabars

London: Published by Edward Orme, 1802. Hand-coloured aquatint engraving by Stadler after Colonel Ward, a skilled amateur artist and member of the Madras Army. Very good condition apart from some light soiling and minor foxing in the margins. An excellent view from Francis Blagdon's "Brief History of Ancient and Modern India," which was comprised of plates after drawings William Orme made of the paintings in the collection of Richard Chase Esquire by Ward and the renowned landscape artists Thomas and William Daniell. Located in a district of Southern India that was once under British rule, the Trichinopoly Rock is a renowned landmark that dominates the town of Tiruchirapalli and overlooks the surrounding landscape. A number of Pallava cave temples are carved into the rock, on top of which sits the ornate multiple-pillared Vinayaka Temple most likely pictured here. Cf. Abbey, Travel , vol. II, 424.; cf. Tooley 93.

Traite des Batiments Propres a Loger les Animaux, qui sont necessaires a l'economie rurale;.

      - Lepizig, Voss 1802. Folio (38x27cm) contemporary quarter calf and mottled boards (rebacked with the original spine preserved); xii,72pp and 50 engraved plates including the frontispiece - plans, elevations etc. Foxing, still a crisp copy. First edition - a German translation appeared a couple of years later - of this handsome, thorough, expert treatise on the architecture of animal husbandry. Heine wrote with an even hand on architecture and rural economy or, as here, both. The book begins with a plan and elevation for a house and estate and continues in sections: stables and all the other varied structures for horses; cows; pigs; sheep; birds, ducks and geese; bees; silkworms; and dogs. The bee and silkworm sections go well beyond architecture and could be self contained monographs on apiculture and sericulture. These are no rustic sheds. These are substantial and considered - quite severe - neo-classical buildings, any one of which would be desirable real estate now. I don't remember another farm building pattern book which insists on applying rules of proportion.

Passaic Falls in the State of New Jersey

London: "... by F. Jukes No. 10 Howland Street and by A. Robertson Columbian Academy Liberty Street New York", 1802. Hand finished colour aquatint engraved by Francis Jukes. Lovely colour aquatint view of Passaic Falls in New Jersey by a noted British artist: one of the earliest views in New Jersey. This view is one of a series of four views executed by the British artist Alexander Robertson during his visit to the United States in 1798, each engraved in London by Francis Jukes. Deák notes that Passaic Falls was "one of the major natural wonders in America that beckoned early artists" and praises the view, which shows a lone fisherman in the foreground, dwarfed by the vertical walls of stone next to the falls, with the rushing torrent in the background.         [Op. 29]. Quintetto Pour 2 Violons, 2 Altos et Violoncelle [Subtitle]: composé et dédié à Monsieur le Comte Maurice de Fries... Oeuv. 29. [Set of parts]

Leipsic: Breitkopf & Härtel [PN 94]. [December 1802]. Folio. Unbound, as issued. Preserved in a modern full dark green cloth folder with black leather label gilt to spine. [1] (title), 2-13; 9; 8; 8; 8 pp. Engraved. Early signature to title. Slightly browned throughout; repairs to spine of first violin part with slight paper loss. . First Edition. Rare. Kinsky-Halm, p. 71. Hirsch IV, 267. Dorfmüller-Weinhold, p. 211. Hoboken 2, 153. "Between the Op. 18 Quartets and those of Op. 59 lie about six or seven years and the 'Eroica.' A whole world, in Beethoven's terms... The bridge between the two worlds is built of works other than quartets, and the only piece of chamber music for strings belonging to this interim stage is the splendid Quintet in C, Op. 29 (with two violas), which lies nearer to the first than to the second period. This work, which may be in some ways regarded as a crown to Op. 18, is still shamefully neglected. As a whole it has greater breadth and economy of line than even the F major Quartet, Op. 18, No. 1... Although there is a sufficiency of accomplished five-part writing and one gets the strong impression for much of the time that the quintet is... an enriched quartet, Beethoven contrives also to create from time to time an almost orchestral richness and weight, especially in the vividly resourceful 'storm finale."       in der Buchhandlung der Realschule, Berlin 1802 - Titel, XII, 338 S.; Titel, (1) Bl., 552 S. Lederbände mit Rückenvergoldung, vergoldete Deckelborduren. Erste Ausgabe (Goedeke VI,51,4). No.2084). Ein dritter Band erschien erst nach der fünften Auflage 1846. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Ryacotta, in the Barramah'l

London: published Thomas Daniell, 1802. Aquatint by and after Thomas & William Daniell, coloured by hand, on 'Whatman' wove paper. Image size: 16 1/2 x 23 1/2 inches. A very fine view of the Barramah'l region that had just recently been wrested from Tippoo Sultan's grasp when the Daniells visited. "Rayakottai formed part of a chain of military outposts used by Tipu Sultan's forces on their campaigns in the Tamil country. A British flag flying proudly from a lookout halfway up the hill proclaims the recent British victory. Rings of walls encircling the central granite rock at successive levels were clearly visible to the Daniells, but can hardly be traced now" (Martinelli/Michell p.144). The Daniells' Oriental Scenery is considered to be the finest illustrated works on India. Thomas Daniell and his nephew William spent nine years in India making studies, sketches and drawings of the scenery, architecture, and antiquities that graced the countryside. They then devoted a further thirteen years to publishing their remarkably accurate aquatints. In Britain, the impact was explosive. A cult of Indian architecture, landscaping and interior decoration arose, with the Royal Pavilion at Brighton as its centerpiece. The Daniells gave the English public their first accurate look at the exotic sub-continent. Their great achievement still lies in their ability to blend the picturesque with the real, resulting in images that capture the European taste for the sublime landscape, while still remaining faithful to their subjects. The Daniells brought the romance of the English landscape to the antiquities of India and provided England with an accurate vision of this wondrous country. Consisting of one hundred and forty-four views, published in six parts, the work was issued in seven stages: three sets of twenty-four plates titled Oriental Scenery with title dates of 1795, 1797, and 1801; twelve plates titled Antiquities of India dated 1799; twenty-four plates titled Hindoo Excavations dated 1803; twenty-four plates titled Views in Hindoostan dated 1807; and twelve further plates of Antiquities of India published without a title page in 1808. All plates were engraved by the Daniells and all are taken from their drawings save the twenty-four plates of Hindoo Excavations , which are after drawings by James Wales.         A COLLECTION OF ALL THE PUBLIC AND PERMANENT ACTS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF KENTUCKY WHICH ARE NOW IN FORCE, ARRANGED AND DIGESTED ACCORDING TO THEIR SUBJECTS; TOGETHER WITH ACTS OF VIRGINIA RELATING TO LAND TITLES, THE RECOVERY OF RENTS, AND THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF LEARNING

Frankfort, 1802. 12mo. Original calf, hinges broken, rubbed. Tears and chipping to fore edge of first seven leaves. Tearing and partial loss to pp.263-264, provided in photostatic facsimile. Light tanning and foxing throughout. Good. In a yellow cloth clamshell box. An early compilation of the laws of Kentucky, preceded only by the 1799 LAWS OF KENTUCKY printed in Lexington. Toulmin, Secretary to the Commonwealth of Kentucky, states in the preface that this volume was published in order to provide easier access to the numerous laws passed by the legislature. "The very confused and undigested state in which the acts of the Legislature of Kentucky have hitherto remained, rendered an arranged collection of them highly necessary both to professional gentlemen and to the public at large. The immethodical manner in which the annual volume of laws is published, is by no means favourable to the ease or information of the reader; but when the acts of ten or twelve sessions are bound up together, just as they happened to be printed, the perplexity which attends a reference to them is disgusting in the highest degree. To remedy this inconvenience, the editor of the following work has distributed the acts of assembly into a variety of classes." The laws of Kentucky are organized into fourteen separate sections including laws relating to boundaries, the United States, the General Assembly, revenue, land titles, courts of justice, and domestic concerns. Laws regarding "agriculture, manufacturing, navigation, and commerce" and "the promotion of knowledge" are also recorded. This volume also includes a table of legal phrases, a summary of criminal law, and acts of the Virginia Assembly relating to rents.

RETURN OF THE WHOLE NUMBER OF PERSONS WITHIN THE SEVERAL DISTRICTS OF THE UNITED STATES: ACCORDING TO "AN ACT PROVIDING FOR THE SECOND CENSUS OR ENUMERATION OF THE INHABITANTS OF THE UNITED STATES," PASSED FEBRUARY THE 28th, ONE THOUSAND EIGHT HUNDRED

Washington, 1802. Contemporary marbled wrappers. Wrappers lightly rubbed. Near fine. The octavo edition of the complete returns of the second American census (the first to be printed by official order), following the very rare folio edition of the previous year. When the delegates of the Constitutional Convention met in Philadelphia in 1787, the population of America was a great unknown. Aside from the expected reduction in the male population due to the recent war, hoards of Loyalists had fled to Canada, while throughout the 1780s large numbers of families sought new opportunities in the frontier along the Ohio. These dramatic shifts, combined with a known but unquantified increase in the number of births per annum, created a definite need for some sort of official count. Under Madison's leadership six categories were determined for the first American census of 1790: heads of family, free white males over sixteen, free white males under sixteen, free white females, other free persons, and slaves. Despite the usual hesitancy of the people to offer such personal information to government officials, the effort was a resounding success; but due to rapid growth and increased contact with Indians, it was clear that the next census would require even more statistical enumeration. In early 1800, Congress passed an act mandating a new census. The present effort contains a new layer of schedules, including places of residence, new age group brackets for free white males and females, and, most importantly, the qualification that untaxed Indians be left off the roll of "other free persons." All of the states are represented, as well as the aforementioned territories and other regions such as the eastern and western districts of Pennsylvania and Virginia, and the District of Columbia, here noted as part of Virginia. Such luminaries as Thomas Jefferson and Timothy Dwight of Yale called for even more specific information such as economic standing, occupation, and distinctions between immigrant and natural-born free people; but Congress, for now, ignored their appeals. The total population, with corrections, is given as just over 5.3 million. A most important record of the growth of the United States, at a key moment in the history of American demography.

THE NEW AMERICAN PRACTICAL NAVIGATOR; BEING AN EPITOME OF NAVIGATION...THE WHOLE EXEMPLIFIED IN A JOURNAL, KEPT FROM BOSTON TO MADEIRA, IN WHICH ALL THE RULES OF NAVIGATION ARE INTRODUCED

Newburyport, 1802. Contemporary calf, expertly rebacked, original richly gilt backstrip laid down, gilt leather label. Folding map neatly repaired along vertical folds and at lower margin, but with no loss of printed area. Contemporary ownership notes on endpapers. Modern bookplate on front pastedown. Text age-toned throughout, scattered foxing. Overall a good to very good copy, in original condition. In a half morocco and cloth slipcase, leather labels. The scarce first edition of the first accurate American navigational guide, a landmark work in its field. Most copies were used to pieces, hence the scarcity of decent copies. "The first complete epitome of practical navigation for the common man....Often termed the greatest book in all the history of navigation, this intellectual achievement of our early culture was indispensable to the maritime and commercial expansion of the nineteenth century" - GROLIER AMERICAN HUNDRED. Bowditch was originally hired by Blunt to revise John Hamilton Moore's NEW PRACTICAL NAVIGATOR, first published by Blunt with Bowditch's additions in 1799. Proficient in several languages, with a good amount of sailing experience, and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Bowditch added much to the work in the way of additional information. He contributed so much in the way of revisions, that he decided to completely redo the book, publishing it in 1802 with a new title and with Bowditch listed as the author. It is a fundamentally important work on the art of navigation, with scores of tables and diagrams, and a wealth of practical (naturally) information. The whole history of the Bowditch NAVIGATOR is told exhaustively in John Campbell's HISTORY AND BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE NEW AMERICAN PRACTICAL NAVIGATOR (Salem, 1964). Campbell identifies eight different imprints for the first edition (all listing different regional booksellers) and does not hazard to officially assign priority. The present copy bears contemporary ownership inscriptions on the endpapers and a note reading "March the 14th 1810 lying in Funchal," indicating that an early owner of this copy might have been engaged in trans- Atlantic trade in the early 19th century.

The History of New South Wales, .

      - London, for M. Jones 1802. Octavo half calf (rubbed, extremities worn); engraved title & 20 illustrations on 14 plates (all handcoloured). Bound as usual without half title & directions leaves. Browned and spotted as often, a decent copy. First edition and clearly bound from the parts but the title has Parramatta spelt correctly (this is one for the issue mongers); leaves G3, Q3 & 3M4 are cancels as in Abbey's copy (565). It seems that one could devote a lifetime to collecting variant copies of this. Whoever wrote Barrington's other books the author of this seems to have been an unwitting David Collins (it's not relevant but Barrington was declared insane by the end of 1800), making sort of true its claim to be the first true history of the country.

This is => the first issue of Schlegel & Tieck's literary annual, patterned on the original Musen-Almanach (1796?-1800) of Schiller, to which both were contributors.
