Three volumes. xlii, 370; xx, 434; viii, 452 pp. Each volume has half-title. Complete set. Octavo (7-3/4" x 5"). Light rubbing and some chips and scratched to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, corners lightly worn. Some toning to text, light foxing in places, internally clean. A very good copy of a scarce set. * First edition. Not published in English until the Boston 1840 American edition, Bentham's seminal work on penal reform and legislation established his reputation. The first of Bentham's works edited by Dumont, it consists partly of papers by Bentham, some of which were originally written in French and partly of a digest by Dumont of Bentham's ideas, including a memoire in French on the Panopticon. Dumont, a Swiss writer and journalist, had met Bentham at the house of Lord Shelburne in 1788. There followed an enduring relationship in which Dumont translated and edited many of Bentham's works, acting at the same time as Bentham's informal literary agent. The first British edition was published in 1864. Harrison, Bentham xvii. Muirhead, A Jeremy Bentham Collection 17.

A Journal of the Forces which sailed from the Downs, in April 1800. on a Secret Expedition under the Command of Lieut.-Gen. Pigot, till their Arrival in Minorca, and continued through all the subsequent Transactions of the Army under Command of the right Hon. General Sir Ralph Abercromby in the Mediterranean and Egypt and the latter Operations under the Command of Lieutenant-General Lord Hutchinson to the Surrender of Alexandria; with a Particular Account of Malta during the Time it was Subject to British Government.

London: J. Debrett, 1802 - Quarto (262 × 210 mm). Rebound to style in half sheep, red morocco label, ruled compartments with gilt centre-tools, old marbled sides. Near contemporary ownership inscription of Frederick Mackenzie to the title page, engraved armorial bookplate of George Noble to the front pastedown. Noble served in the Navy during the Napoleonic wars seeing action at Copenhagen, in the West Indies, and the Adriatic. Extremely attractive and well-executed period binding, the boards a little rubbed, some browning throughout, strong in places, two of the plates with faint, unobtrusive hygroscopic tide-marks, a very good copy. Large folding plan of Valetta as frontispiece, full-page plan, 7 double-page plates (a view of Cadiz and 6 of Malta). With the half-title. First and only edition of this uncommon personal account of the operations against the French in the Mediterranean concluding with the Egyptian Expedition and the surrender at Alexandria, particularly prized for the account of Malta and views of the island after Anderson's own drawings. In June 1798 the French occupied Malta with ease, largely due to popular dissatisfaction with the rule of the Knights of St. John. A programme of radical reforms followed, including the adoption of French as the official language, but the new administration quickly antagonised the population by their revolutionary, anticlerical measures, and in September 1798 the Maltese rebelled against them and drove them back into the fort of Medina. Nelson established a blockade and landed troops to assist in the siege, which led to French evacuation of the island. In 1802 the Treaty of Amiens restored the island to the Order of St. John, but by the Treaty of Paris, 1814, it became a British possession. Ibrahim-Hilmy I, 36; NMM, V, 1489; Sandler 110, defective copy.

Adam Walker [1731-1821] British author and inventor. Taken from school "almost before he could read," Walker was largely self educated. His dedication to learning earned him a reputation as a diligent student and as a result he was made an Usher at the Ledsham School and was later appointed writing master at Macclesfield. Encouraged by the success of his lectures, Walker began to tour, lecturing on natural philosophy in all the major cities. In 1778 he met Joseph Priestly who induced him to leture at the Haymarket. As a result he was engaged as a lecturer at Eton College and several other public schools. He occupied his leisure time be perfecting various mechanical inventions including; an engine for raising water; steam carriages; rotary lights for the Scilly Isles (which were installed in 1790); a mthod of thermo ventiliation lines to heat homes without means of a kitchen fire, etc. Walker published several works; the above was first published in 1799. "System of Familiar Philosophy" covers a wide range of topics; illustrating Watts new patent steam engine along with a steam engine of his own invention; and an early fire extinguisher.         Dictionnaire raisonné de Bibliologie [with]: Supplément.

Three folding printed tables. xxix, 472 pp.; 2 p.l., 450 pp., 3 leaves of errata; x, 373 pp. Three vols. 8vo, later red half-morocco & marbled boards, t.e.g., others uncut. Paris: Villier [Vols. I & II]; A.A. Renouard [Vol. III], 1802-02-04. First edition, Vols. I & II are one of fifteen sets printed on papier vélin bleuâtre, of this work which gives, in dictionary form, information concerning the various aspects of bibliography, book production, the history of books and manuscripts, etc., etc. Although more than 150 years old, it is a most interesting reference tool, of which many articles are still useful -- if not essential -- especially those on libraries, collectors, and bibliographers. To pick at random one of many examples: where else can be found a ten-page article on the Abbé Rive, the famous 18th-century bibliographer, with a list of his publications and unpublished writings? This is a fascinating set, having belonged to the great bibliographer and bookseller A.A. Renouard, with a number of interesting items specially bound in the first volume: 1. The eight-page Prospectus for the book, printed at Vesoul. On the lower margins of the prospectus Peignot has written to Renouard asking for details of his book on Aldus as he would like to make use of the information in his work, of which volume one will shortly appear. He mentions that he had printed 1000 copies plus 15 on papier fin (this present set is one of them), of which 8 are spoken for, but if Renouard would like one or two copies, Peignot must know. 2. A.L.s (3 pp.) addressed to Renouard in Paris, dated from Naples 16 July 1811, written by one Duyrat de Boisset [? possibly from Nîmes, where there was a bookseller of that name] about the detailed organization and the personnel involved in the unrolling and decipherment of the Herculaneum papyri. 3. Translation (6pp., possibly in Renouard's hand) of the notice on the library of St. Mark's extracted "de l'appendice italien à la traduction du Spectateur de M. Maltebrun. No. IV" because "la notice de M. G. Peignot sur la Bibliothèque de S. Marc dans son Dictionnaire bibliologique ayant été trouvée insuffisante, on a jugé à propos de publier celle-ci." This is a reference to Le Spectateur ou variétés historiques, littéraires, a short-lived periodical edited by Conrad de Malte-Brun which was published 1815-16. 4. A.L. s (4 pp.) from Peignot to Renouard dated from Vesoul 18 January 1808: Peignot is sending some books and an engraving plus two sheets of Dict. des Brulés. "You had asked me for three, but the 8th [sheet] of Vol. 2 I simply do not have. I have included in the same little packet a copy of the edition of Meibomius in translation, which one day will be rare, because the police at Besançon have had the whole edition seized, and I am assured that not even 20 copies escaped. For myself I have 6 copies, which the printer had given me before the catastrophe*. I include also 'les pensées de Shakespeare par Nodier...I received from Besançon Les apothéoses et imprecations de Pythagore, also by Nodier." "C'est un in 4o imprimé en capitales, style lapidaire...au nombre de 17 exemplaires, avec le nom du souscripteur auquel l'exemplaire est destiné**. He mentions the forthcoming sale of the library of one M. Duzier, very rich in books on the Franche-Comté and discusses a shortfall in delivery of "la petite collection des stereotypes papier velin...J'ai fais cartonner à dos de maroquin et à toutes marges l'exemplaire [of Lucan] que vous m'avez envoyé, ainsi que le Cicéron, et la bible de Mortier." Peignot asks for other books to be delivered to an address in Vesoul. He also asks about the prospectus already sent and discusses his account of travel literature and attendant bibliography. He mentions his financial state. *This is the edition of the French translation of Johann Heinrich Meibom's (1590-1655), De l'Utilité de la Flagellation dans la Medicine et dans les Plaisirs du Marriage, published with the fictitious imprint "Londres 1801," but actually printed at Besançon where it attained some notoriety which led to its suppression. **Les apothéoses et imprecations de Pythagore was published by Charles Nodier with the imprint "A Crotone," but again published in Besançon in 1808. 5. Copy of a letter from Renouard to Peignot on the subject of his work on Latin writers which he counsels to have printed at Dijon rather than Paris "where you can keep an eye on everything and where the printing shops are superior to those of Vesoul or Besançon." 6. "Copie d'une lettre écrite" [by Renouard] "à M. Peignot le 23 floréal ou 12-15 mai 1804" (7 pp.) containing a detailed examination and criticism of entries in Peignot's Essai de curiosités bibliographiques (Paris: A.A. Renouard, 1804). The letter ends "Voici les observations que m'a suggerées un examen rapide, comme ells sont uniquement pour vous j'ai cru pouvoir les écrire à la hâte...". Provenance: A.A. Renouard (1765-1853) and A.R.A. Hobson. Fine set. ❧ N.B.G., Vol. 39, col.

THE WOLF KING; OR LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: AN OLD WOMAN'S TALE [IN] THE PORT FOLIO, VOL II, NO 22 (JUNE 5TH, 1802)

Philadelphia: Printed for The Editor & Elizabeth Dickens, 1802. Quarto (32cm); printed wrappers, disbound, but untrimmed; pp.[169]-176. Text is toned (though not brittle), mild wear to extremities, with scattered foxing; Very Good+. Important issue of this Federalist newspaper, published by Joseph Dennie and Philadelphia bookseller Asbury Dickens. Notable for the inclusion of 'The Wolf King; or Little Red Riding Hood,' a decidedly grotesque version of the traditional Little Red Riding Hood story told in 26 stanzas. First published in Terror Tales (London: W.Bulmer & Co., 1801) and once attributed to M.G. Lewis, the publication in The Port Folio marks its first appearance in the United States. In comparison to the Brothers Grimm version of 1812, this version lacks the redemptive appearance of the huntsman, and ends with Little Red Riding Hood meeting a gruesome end at the hands of the wolf. "His hungry teeth the wolf king gnash'd, His sparkling eyes with fury flash'd, He'd op'd his jaws all sprent with blood, And fell on small red riding hood. / He tore out bowels one and two, "Little maid, I will eat you!" But when he tore out three and four, The little maid she was no more!" Not the first appearance of Little Red Riding Hood in the United States (OCLC notes three pre-1802 American editions of the traditional version based on Perrault, along with two others), though certainly the first appearance of this particular iteration. Additionally, this issue contains obituaries for Martha Washington and Sarah Jay (wife of John Jay). Uncommon.

        Byblis, A Tragedy.

2 p.l., 67 pp. Small 4to, orig. wrappers (a bit of foxing). London: [Privately] Printed by W. Bulmer, 1802. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed on the upper wrapper "For Lady Mount Cashell at the Aquila Nera" in what is quite certainly the hand of the author. The "Aquila Nera" in the inscription is very probably the same inn at Livorno where the Shelley family stayed for a week -- arriving on the 17th of June 1819 -- while searching for a villa. The inn seems to be have a favorite stop for English travellers while travelling in Tuscany. We know that Drummond and Lady Mount Cashell were both in Italy in the second half of 1802, close to Livorno. Drummond (1770?-1828), Scottish diplomat, classical scholar, and M.P., was very influential in the development of the ideas of the Shelley. Drummond's researches into comparative mythology and, especially, his sceptical opinions on the Bible influenced a generation of free thinkers, including Shelley. Drummond's Academical Questions (1805), a manifesto for immaterialism, convinced Shelley to abandon his French materialist philosophical beliefs. Lady Mount Cashell (1773-1835), born Margaret King, had Mary Wollstonecraft as her tutor, who inculcated republican sympathies in her student. Later, Lady Mount Cashell became an intimate friend of Mary Shelley, the daughter of Mary Wollstonecraft, and her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley. While travelling in Europe, Lady Mount Cashell met George William Tighe, an Irishman, and they fell madly in love. She left her husband and children in 1803, travelled in Italy with Tighe -- calling herself "Mrs. Mason," taking the name from Mary Wollstonecraft's Original Stories from Real Life. Claire Clairmont remembered her as to have studied medicine in Jena dressed as a man. Tighe and "Mrs. Mason" finally settled in Pisa and received the Shelleys, introducing them to the intellectual and social world of their adopted city. This copy bears authorial changes: on page 35, one line of text has been completely erased. On page 40, Drummond has made three corrections. Fine copy in original state. Rare. Preserved in a box. .

THE CABINET-MAKER AND UPHOLSTERER'S DRAWING-BOOK. IN FOUR PARTS

London: T. Bensley, 1802. viii,viii,[5]-446,60,24,[8]pp. plus 123 plates. Thick quarto. Contemporary paneled calf, gilt, a.e.g. Corners lightly worn, boards rubbed. Bookplate on front pastedown. Very minor foxing. Very good. Third edition, revised and generally considered the best edition, of this important furniture-making treatise, with a full complement of engraved plates as well as the Appendix and Accompaniment. "... in 1791 his masterpiece, THE CABINET MAKER AND UPHOLSTERER'S DRAWING- BOOK, began to be published by subscription in fortnightly sections (forty-two in all), priced 1s. A slightly larger second edition appeared in 1794 and a third with some small amendments in 1802. A German version was translated by G. T. Wenzel and published in Leipzig. It was intended for practising members of the trade, and addressed 'to Cabinet-Makers and Upholsterers in General'. The 717 subscribers were almost entirely established furniture makers, in contrast to those of Thomas Chippendale's GENTLEMAN AND CABINET MAKER'S DIRECTOR (1754, 1755, and 1762) which had included members of aristocracy and gentry. Sheraton's intention (inspired perhaps by his Nonconformist background) was to improve the work of uneducated artisans by teaching them proportion and perspective drawing, since previous manuals had been deficient in this. He firmly believed in the immutable laws of 'Geometry and real Science' and wished to show how these could be applied to the ephemeral nature of taste particularly in furniture design. In his own words his intention was to make the Drawing Book 'as permanently useful as I could and to unite with usefulness the taste of the times' (Sheraton, Drawing Book, 1802 edn, 355)" - DNB. In fact the third edition contains more than "small amendments", and has always been considered the most desirable. DNB (online).

Louis Bondy notes that "Because of their tiny size and perhaps also due to their unusually absorbing contents, very few copies have survived; most of them must have been lost or read to shreds." Bound in the original half cloth and mottled boards with a hand-written paper spine label. Slight edgewear, spine lightly faded, two signatures sprung, else a near fine copy in the original state.
